Today we're talking about whyvacation is not the burnout cure
we were promised.
What is actually drivingexecutive exhaustion in 2026 and
what your nervous systemactually needs instead?
So, what burnout actually is.

Let me start with the definitionwe got wrong.
For years burnout was describedas exhaustion from overwork.
The prescription was rest, takea break, recharge, disconnect,
unplug.
The problem is that the peoplefollowing that prescription were
coming back from two weeks inTuscany and feeling exactly the

same way as when they left.
Because burnout is not a timeoff problem.
It's a nervous system problem.
Here is the actual science.
Your body has a stress responsesystem called the HPA axis.
I mean, I'm gonna throw ascientific term here.

HPA is hypothalamic pituitaryadrenal.
It is the system that releasescortisol when your brain detects
threat.
And it's brilliant at its job.
When you are in acute threat,the HPA axis fires.

Cortisol surges.
Cortisol is your stress hormone.
You get sharp, fast, focused,you handle the crisis.
Then the threat passes.
Cortisol drops.
Your nervous system returns tobaseline.
That's the design.
But the design assumes that thethreat resolves.

The board member meeting endsand the AI mandate starts.
The AI mandate starts and thetalent attrition accelerates.
The talent attrition acceleratesand the next reorganization is

resolved stress allostatic load.

So why AI pressure makes itpermanent?
Now let me tell you why 2026 isdifferent from every previous

burnout conversation.
For most of history, leadershippressure came in waves.
A crisis, then a recovery, ahigh stakes quarter, then a
stager one.
The nervous system could findits baseline between routes.
AI pressure does not work inwaves.
It works in an unbroken stream.

Every week there is a new toolyour board expects you to have
evaluated.
A new capability your competitorannounced.
A new headline about which jobsare disappearing.
A new policy debate about why AIis not allowed to do.

Your nervous system reads all ofit as unresolved threat because
none of it resolves.
There is no moment where the AIlandscape settles and your
amygdala gets to rest.
The result is what I call AIpressure dysregulation.

A state where the nervous systemis never fully in threat and
never fully at rest.
It stays in low grade activationindefinitely.
A single 20-minute activation ofthe stress response impairs
cognitive flexibility for up tothree hours.

If your nervous system is in lowgrade activation for eight hours
a day, five days a week, forweeks on end, calculate what
that cost your decision making.
And then you take a vacation.
You leave the office, but theunresolved threat is not in the

the all-static load your bodyhas been accumulated for months.
So the threat travels with you.
It doesn't even pay for itself.

still scanning for theresolution signal that never
came.
And when you return on Monday,the AI headlines are still
there.
The board pressure is stillthere.

The mandate is still there.
The threat reactivatesimmediately, and you feel like
you never left.
DDI's 2026 Global LeadershipForecast found that 66% of
managers and 71% of C-suiteleaders say they would leave

their current role for one thatoffered better support for their
well-being.
Not for compensation, for anervous system that could
actually recover.
The people who leave are theones whose nervous system have
run out of capacity, not theones who lack commitment.

So what actually works?
So what does the nervous systemactually need?
Not absence, but regulation.
They are not the same thing.
Absence is taking your body outof the environment.
Regulation is changing the stateyour nervous system is in.

You can be in Tuscany, you canbe in Tahiti, you can be in
beautiful Paris or even inCannes and be dysregulated.
You can be in a board meetingand regulate it.
Location and schedule are notthe variables.
Nervous system state is thevariable.

Here is what regulation actuallyrequires.
First, the threat needs to feelresolvable.
Not resolved, resolvable.
The nervous system does not needcertainty.
It needs enough structure tolower the alarm.
This is why leaders who namewhat they know and what they

don't know regulate faster thanleaders who project false
certainty.
The brain does not trustperformance, it trusts honesty.
Second, the body needs tocomplete the stress cycle.
This is research from Drs.
Emily and Amelia Nagoski onburnout biology.

The stress response is aphysical cycle with a beginning,
a middle, and an end.
Most executives interrupt it inthe middle.
They manage the stressor, butthey never signal to the body
that the threat has passed.
The cortisol stays elevated andthe cycle never closes.

Movement closes the cycle.
Physical completion of what thebody started biologically when
it went into threat mode.
Third, the nervous system needswhat researchers call a social
engagement signal.
Human connection that treats assafe, not networking, not

professional relationships,genuine felt safety with another

This is polyvigal theory.
The social engagement system isthe break on the stress
response, and most executives at2026 are running without it.
