Badass Is the New Skinny

Badass Is the New Skinny

Being a badass is about owning your shit. It’s about honest self-reflection, looking your fear in the face, and saying, “Hey, you classy bitch. I see you. I get it. But I won’t let you hold me back.” Being a badass is about finding and using your most authentic voice, even when your opinion isn’t popular. (But we badasses are respectful. Speaking our truth without being an asshole in the process. Just sayin’.) Reconnecting with your inner badass is a journey. It takes daily effort and intention, a great deal of reflection, courage, and normalizing the “abnormal.” Badass Is the New Skinny is where we’ll have conversations about the thoughts, feelings, and actions that contribute to your inner badassery. You’ll hear more about how I navigate the shit show of being a type-A, neurotic, people-pleaser who cares way too much what other people think, and what I’ve learned along the way. You’ll get all the tips, tricks, self-care, self-grace, habits, behaviors, questions, and more that helped me take on my fears and figure out my shit. So join me for new episodes every Thursday, and let’s celebrate the struggle, the wins, the lessons, and all that good stuff on this journey to feel like our best and most empowered badass.

Let's be real. Most health and wellness goals are weight-based. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but there are some potential issues that I wanted to address in this episode, as a sort of continuation from last week's episode around goal-setting.

The problem with weight loss is that many people rely on the number on the scale to gauge whether or not they are making progress or are "successful." Where a...

Think about the last time you thought to yourself, I need to start eating better, or I need to work out more, or I should really lose some weight. Did the thought go much further than that? Or was it a fleeting thought that you had before eating a cookie while settled in on the couch for a Netflix marathon?

No judgies. I say it that way because I've been there. On many occasions, I've been there.

The problem with these fleeti...

I'm gonna be real. In this episode, I get a little bit rambly trying to make a point. You'll have to hit me up on Instagram at @sa.brina.brina and let me know if you think I succeeded in this point or not, but here's the deal. In this episode, I talk about taking a week off for my birthday and what it was like to realize that moms have a lot of support and it hitting me that I'll probably never be able to relate...

I get it. When you're excited about making a change or when you've come out the other side of a big change and you're trying to get your shit together - you're motivated.

And when you're motivated, you'll go balls to the wall and do ALL THE THINGS. But extremes are hard to sustain, and when the motivation wanes (and it eventually will), those extremes become even less sustainable and you find yourself back a...

Something really important to keep in mind as you take steps to live a healthier, badass life is that even the health, wellness, and fitness professionals have bad habits or don't always do the things they "should" do.

In this episode, I talk about the following bad habits that I'm working on - or plan to work on:

  • Eliminating (or vastly reducing) how much soda I drink.
  • Identify easy and convenient - water-based - alte...

Nearly everyone has been through a big life change in the last couple of years, thanks to the pandemic. Some examples of these big life changes include things like losing a job, getting a new job, getting married, getting divorced, having a baby, moving, graduating, etc. And oftentimes, when we experience these big life changes, it throws our routines and our habits out of whack. If you're like me, maybe you feel unanchored, li...

Today's diet culture has made this concept of "good" and "bad" foods very common and also misguided. Eating healthy for a badass life is about prioritizing nutrient-dense foods and not demonizing foods that are less nutrient-dense. There's room for everything as long as you're being mindful about what you're eating and why, and indulging in moderation.

It's important to remember that food does no...

Journaling can be a really powerful practice for self-exploration, personal development, and growth. It's a practice I've been doing for many, many years, and is one that has supported my mental health and personal growth. I've processed so many experiences and learned so much about myself. I've used journaling to express gratitude and pour my heart out about things I'm passionate about.

    Not only that, but journ...

You just set a weight loss goal - cool! Or you just set a fitness goal - right on!

In this podcast episode, we have a little heart-to-heart about establishing your "why" when you're setting a goal or figuring out what you want to do. I'll talk about this mostly in the context of weight loss because, c'mon, it seems like everyone is trying to lose weight all the time. Maybe only a slight exaggeration.

    But the t...

Take a minute to think about the last time you set a health or wellness goal. Maybe you were trying to lose weight or recover your energy, or just feel better.

Chances are, you land in one of two camps:

  • You choose to go ALL IN on diet or exercise and you go balls to the wall, all before completing losing steam and giving up.
  • You choose to do a complete overhaul of your lifestyle and change ALL THE THINGS, only to find that trying to k...

You set a goal. You set a goal to lose weight, manage your stress, save money for the holidays - whatever the case may be. You set a goal and then set out to figure out what you need to do to achieve that goal.

As you're looking at what it will take to achieve that goal, you find yourself saying, "Nope. Nope. Not doing that. Nope. Oh hell no..."

    Does this sound like you?

Let's talk about the oversaturation of online coaches. Whether you're actually looking for information, support or guidance for something, or someone just randomly drops into your social media messages, there's no denying that "coach" carries a little bit of a connotation that isn't taken real seriously.

Because for real, it's like everyone and their mom is a coach these days. Especially since the pandemi...

What if I were to tell you that the last time you set a goal - and you didn't achieve it - it was because you didn't want it bad enough?

Before you get pissy with me or bail, hear me out. There's nothing wrong with this, and it's valuable information to help you figure out what you really want and how to get there.

In this episode, I detail four ways "not wanting it bad enough" manifests. In some cases, the &#...

Things are feeling just a wee bit out of control lately.

We can blame it on COVID-19 and how everything has been just a shit-storm since it started its rampage, but let's be real - if we think about life pre-COVID, it still felt a little bit out of control.

The difference is that we've gone from the "normal" stressors and life events and we've piled on a pandemic, social unrest, economic uncertainty, political up...

Question for you: How the hell are you supposed to make well-informed choices about living a healthy life when greedy corporations go to great lengths to sabotage those efforts by rounding up scientists to feed you misinformation that will ultimately keep you stuck?

My friend, have you ever asked yourself a question that unlocked a part of your self-awareness that you'd previously shut down? A question that shook your world and changed everything?

Regardless of your goal, if you take to the internet and social media for advice or guidance for how to achieve your goal, you're going to find a wealth of information. In this episode, I break down four types of advice that I hate and provide recommendations for what you can do when you trip over these types of advice:

In this episode, I tell you about my history with alcohol, how it brought me to a breaking point, and how I found strength in overcoming my addiction. While everyone's vice is different, we all have our own ways of coping with hardships, stress, and more. In this premier episode of Badass Is the New Skinny, I go into the backstory behind my insecurities and body issues, how I found strength in "badass" as an attitude, how it was used against me, and how I reclaimed this word and reconnected with my inner strength. I talk more about how everyone has an inner badass and what it means for them.

Everyone has an inner badass - an attitude and authenticity that defines each of us.
