A comedy club might be the last place you’d expect to hear real escape logistics, but that’s exactly why Comedy For A Cause worked. Claire and I recap our first in-person fundraiser at Comedy Works South in Denver, including a quick walkthrough of the venue, how the silent auction came together, and why this mission matters for people leaving Scientology who suddenly face lost community, lost income, and even family disconnection.

We break down what went right, what we’ll improve next year, and why donated support from venues, volunteers, artists, and sponsors can turn a fun night into direct help. We also share the impact number that still blows our minds: about $13,000 raised, money that can translate into transportation to safety and other Aftermath Foundation programs like peer support, education grants, crisis help, and more.

event that happened a few daysago.
And um so Claire put togethersome slides.

All right, yes, so Comedy for aCause, our first ever in-person
event.
Goal of the event for manypeople leaving Scientology, the
loss of community, financialstability, and family support
can be overwhelming.
Funds raised at this event godirectly toward helping

individuals take their firststeps towards independence,
safety, and a self-directedfuture.
So, yes, it was a it was agreat, a great venue, great
event, great turn turnout.
We it was awesome to have somany people come together.
Um, it was just a really therewas no negatives.

SPEAKER_01 (04:35):
Yeah, there was a few people there that we just
didn't know.
And so there was a f it was afew people that were like, Well,
these are people we do not know,or or we haven't met in person.
Yes, and so we were sort oflike, okay, we'll see, we'll
see.
I thought for sure that there atleast had to be one or two OSA

people in there.
For sure.
Yeah, but who knows which two ofthose people.

They didn't cause any trouble, so maybe they were
debating whether to submit anapplication for aid, you know?

Yeah.
Okay, so yeah, I did that.
Yes, the tour.

We did the venue tour, yeah.
So we so for anyone who didn'tjoin the live stream on
Wednesday, so the event was onMarch 11th, Wednesday, March
11th.
Um, and it started at 6.
We had the upstairs dining area,we had the whole silent auction,
um, all a lot of baskets laidout.

We had some items that were forin-person bidding and some that
were also included online.
Um, so we'll organize thatbetter for next year.
We learned some good lessonsfrom that.
But really, uh typically at anevent like this, the silent
auction is for attendees.
But because we wanted to broadenit to involve the community and

(05:58):
everything else, we that's whywe opted to do the online
option, which was really good.

SPEAKER_01 (06:03):
Yeah, it was because and also just depending on
weather and how it ends uppeople trap people's travels and
stuff like that.
So um it's good to be have somepeople on the interwebs get a
chance to.

SPEAKER_02 (06:16):
Yes.

SPEAKER_01 (06:16):
It was also good for us to do so that we could see
how much we could handle as anorganization on putting together
an event and all the differentthings that went into it.
So it was a good kind of firstuh whack at it.
And um and whenever you're doinga fundraiser, you want to get
take in more money than you'respending on the fundraiser, and

we well, well exceeded that.
So that was also we we had wehad a lot of things donated for
from people to make this happen.

SPEAKER_00 (06:50):
And absolutely, I want to focus for a minute on
Comedy Works, and our goodfriend Wendy Um use of the space
was donated, which wasabsolutely huge.
If you live in Colorado and youhaven't visited Comedy Works,
there's two locations actually,one in downtown Denver, and this
was this one is Comedy WorksSouth, but it's our personal

favorite.

SPEAKER_02 (07:13):
Yes.

SPEAKER_00 (07:14):
Um, it's absolutely awesome.
You can go there for dinner, andif you make a dinner reservation
and you have tickets for acomedy show, it's like the the
uh insider information thatyou'll get.
You'll get like from your dinnerreservations, you get straight
into priority seating, nowaiting in line.

SPEAKER_01 (07:33):
It's we've seen a lot of good shows.
We've we saw uh probably 50shows there.

SPEAKER_00 (07:41):
Yes, including ones that were the material was used
for Netflix specials.

SPEAKER_01 (07:45):
We saw a Dave Chappelle show, and I'm pretty
sure that one it was a long,long show.
He had a bottle of booze andcigarettes and a pack of
cigarettes, and he pretty muchgot he was sharing doing shots
with the audience.

SPEAKER_00 (07:59):
Yeah, that's I remember that one because man,
there were two people in thefront row that he was going to
town with.
It was so, so funny.

SPEAKER_01 (08:07):
But also that show was through like pretty much the
majority of three Netflixspecials.
Yes.
So it was a long show, and itwas hilarious.
Maybe the best show I've everbeen to in my life.

SPEAKER_00 (08:19):
Yeah, and we've been to some really funny shows
there.

SPEAKER_01 (08:22):
Yeah, we have a lot.

SPEAKER_00 (08:24):
Um, but yes, so Comedy Works South, there.
Wendy's support of our cause andour mission is just so, so
meaningful.
Her staff is amazing, thefacility was amazing.
They did great.

SPEAKER_01 (08:35):
Yeah, and she even showed up for a little bit.
Yes, I know.
It was so good to see her.
Made an appearance.

SPEAKER_00 (08:41):
Yes, absolutely.
And oh, and also shout out toour staff and board members who
showed up.
Of course, the amazing Clara,Katherine Olsen, Katherine
Christensen, um, both came forthe event.
Uh and yep.

SPEAKER_01 (08:57):
And Catherine also made a lot of things for the
event as well.
Yes.
Artwork and pictures and allkinds of things she could she
brought in.

SPEAKER_00 (09:05):
Yes, absolutely.
As did um other survivors likeSerge Obolinsky, um, drew an
amazing uh he did a pen drawingfor our auction, which was just
awesome.
And Shannon Komodo also did areally awesome um, donated an
amazing piece of art that shecreated.

(09:25):
Um, she said I could say hername.
So you're looking at me funny,like I'm like, no, we're good.
We're good.
Okay.

SPEAKER_01 (09:34):
You know, there is a cut in the middle of that video,
and it's because there were somepeople I was not supposed to
show on camera that were thatneed to not to be seen by the
camera.
So there's a big jump cut rightin that video, in the middle of
that video, and that's mesplicing in another take of some
some of the video.

SPEAKER_00 (09:52):
It's all good.
You you took care of business,so I'm grateful.
And um, okay, yeah, so alsospecial thanks to Mitch Brisker.
He did actually two versions ofum uh a promotional video for
the event, one for pre-event,one for to be played at the
event, which was amazing.
They had TVs in the lobby atComedy Works where the video was

playing, and then we also playedit.
I I gave a speech at the startof the event, and then we played
the video for the for all theattendees, which was awesome.
Um, and this is our team photobefore the event.
Amazing crew, like I said, ourteam of volunteers took a photo
on stage before the event.
Yeah, there you go.

Um, auction items.
We had custom embroidered EddieBauer jackets with our logo.
There's me modeling them with umour board member Helen.
Uh, those were they're supercool jackets.
Really, really nice.

I know.
You guys were like, hey.
I was like, ooh, I why are wegiving these away?

SPEAKER_00 (10:57):
I know.
I bid on one and then I gotoutbid, which was kind of funny.

SPEAKER_01 (11:01):
I bid on I re I bid on one of the um one of the
auctions and I kept gettingoutbid by people, and I was
like, this is crazy that theywant this.

SPEAKER_00 (11:12):
Yep.
And then there was um Marcus, acracker liquor gift basket,
which was donated.
Yes, you did.
We I think we have oh yeah,there you go.

It's that's the photo you cansee there.
That was donated by Cam Kansas.
Super grateful for all of KathyMannweiler's help with the
event.

And um, yeah, so that was thecracker liquor basket.
Uh this was the piece of artthat Shannon donated.
Um, it's kind of hard to tell,but it's um like 3D media.
Um so yeah, anyway, super cool.

Um that was also, yeah, that wasalso pretty awesome.
There was like 40 bids on that,I want to say.

It's literally textured in thewhat it's painted kind of thing.

So anyway, he got it done.

So so far, we still have donations coming in, but we
were all told we've raised$13,000, which is amazing.

SPEAKER_01 (13:39):
For be able to get all those things done and also
come out on top was amazing.

SPEAKER_00 (13:46):
And that goes to help that amount can help
transport 26 survivors tosafety.
Um, and also obviously, we haveso many programs, education
grants, our online supportgroup, um, peer support, our
crisis line, the billboards,etc.
So um all very meaningful fundsthat will go to very good use.

(14:10):
And we're just so grateful toeveryone who came to the event,
everyone who who joined the livestream before the event,
everyone who helped us to beable to pull it off.
Uh, we learned so much reallyimportant lessons.
We did.

It was perfect for it was perfect for the the for
the first kind of one.

SPEAKER_00 (14:30):
Yes, it was.

SPEAKER_01 (14:31):
It was um like we've had meetings and like meetups
before, but this is like weactually had to put on a show.
We had to do a whole lot ofstuff.

And we talked to so many people.
Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_01 (14:43):
There was a lot of people there from all over, too.
Yes, from I want to say at leastsix or seven states we had
people coming in from.
And um, is there another slide?

Maybe even more.
Uh yeah, we'll go back becausewe'll get to that later.

Oh.
Um the um my cousin and her andmy aunt and her family a lot of
family members were there in theaudience, and I didn't know they
were there because they didn'tcome for the dinner, they just
came for the show.

Yes.

And um and I was like, Oh my god, what are you
guys doing here?
And they're like, Oh, wewouldn't miss this for the
world.
And we I was like, Oh mygoodness.
Yes.
Anyway, and I was sitting theretalking with them, and then some
some of the ushers came throughand said, Hey, you gotta get out
of here.
There's somebody sitting here.
And it was the mayor of Brightonand his wife that was sitting
right next to them.
And I was like, Wow, this iswild.

Yes, yeah, and and for context, uh Tony Ortega did
an article about the mayor ofBrighton last year because the
city of Brighton had made May9th Dianetics Day, and and
actually Wendy from Comedy Worksis the person that brought it to
my attention, and we immediatelyjumped on this to meet with the

mayor of Brighton to tell himhow woefully misinformed he was.

SPEAKER_01 (15:59):
How wild is that if that she gets a notification
when something related withScientology happens?
She pays attention.
Anyway, she saw this article,and otherwise we never would
have known about it.

SPEAKER_00 (16:10):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 (16:10):
It was like in the paper kind of thing.

SPEAKER_00 (16:12):
Yeah.
Anyway, we went and met with himin his, you know, respectfully,
he was incredibly responsive.
He was absolutely mortified.
And so he met with myself, Mark,Chris Shelton, and Bruce Hines,
and we explained to him, youknow, all the things he didn't
know about the connectionsbetween Dianetics and

Scientology and the abusive anddestructive practices of the
Scientology organization.
And of course, May 9th is nolonger Dianetics Day in the city
of Brighton.

Yeah, they rescinded it like before it ever got done.

SPEAKER_00 (16:48):
Yes.
No, we're talking aboutBrighton, Colorado.

SPEAKER_01 (16:51):
Yeah.
Yeah.

Not somebody asked Brighton, UK.

Um, and then also um, I think we even gave him a

Yeah, and we gave him a wholelike folder of, you know, a fact
sheet about all the veryproblematic issues in Dianetics
itself.
And more to the point, he Imean, it wouldn't be hard to
establish a connection, but itwas carefully played from by
Scientology at the outset withno reference to Scientology.

Yeah, they never mentioned that at the end of the
year.
None.
So, of course, an author of aself-help book kind of right.

Exactly.
The modern science of mentalhealth as it's you know pitched.

SPEAKER_01 (17:34):
Bestseller and translated into 77 languages.

SPEAKER_00 (17:37):
Yeah.
Anyway, so yeah, a lot ofamazing people came to the
event.
Um, people that, you know, andalso not just um former
Scientologists, but other cultpeople recovering from cults and
um some of the things.

Denver Steve was there.

Oh, yes, yes, that was awesome.

Denver Stevo and his wife came.

We were lucky to have amazingweather, so there was no snow

succeeded in escaping.
