weekend.
Anyway, anything you're lookingforward to?
Any way you're preparing?
SPEAKER_01 (01:32):
I have been in that
room, in that hotel room,
rehearsing every day.
Um, I just did rehearsals today,so I am really excited about
getting on that stage.
It's my first time.
So yeah, first time.
So I'm excited.
There we go.
SPEAKER_03 (01:46):
There we go.
SPEAKER_01 (01:47):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_03 (01:48):
Okay.
You have any nerves?
SPEAKER_01 (01:50):
Always.
I'm always nervous before theweek before and the night
before.
But as soon as I get on stage, Ithink I'll be all right.
SPEAKER_03 (01:57):
Okay.
So it's the buildup more so thanthe actual.
SPEAKER_01 (02:00):
Yeah, the it's it's
anxiety mostly.
It's like I'm thinking about allof the things that I could do in
that moment and just trying tomake sure that I do everything
right.
So once I get there, I'll I'llbe okay.
SPEAKER_02 (02:12):
Now, what is your
like, what is your like pregame
ritual look like?
How do you get in that mode whenit's time to like perform?
Whether it's the voice, BTAwards, backyard, local concert,
whatever it is, how do you getto that headspace?
SPEAKER_01 (02:26):
I'm not gonna lie to
you.
I will take a second and go in acorner.
I'll pray real quick and ask theLord to, you know, whatever
these people need, let me beable to give it to them because
I don't feel like this is mine.
I feel like God gave it to me.
So I try my best to make surethat he is always present in
everything that I'm doing.
SPEAKER_03 (02:45):
I love that.
We love that.
Amen.
Amen.
Perform it on a Sunday time.
So we heard you first found outyou could sing or first started
singing at two years old.
SPEAKER_00 (02:57):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_03 (02:58):
So how did that
happen?
Like, how did how did you knowand how did that progress?
SPEAKER_01 (03:02):
Well, my mom was a
vocal coach and she was the
choir director at our church, and so she used to help all the
kids at the church, and theywould come over to our house and
she would give them vocallessons, and I'd be sitting
under the piano.
And one day she had a studentthere, and she wanted them to
hit a certain note.
And I'm under the piano, I'mgoing over it, over and over it,
(03:23):
and I finally was like, Mama, Icould do it.
And she was like, Well, do it,and I did it, and she was like,
Oh.
SPEAKER_03 (03:28):
At two years old?
SPEAKER_01 (03:29):
Yeah.
Well, no, I was one when I didthat, and then she started
working with me, and I did myfirst solo at two years old at
church.
SPEAKER_03 (03:40):
So how obviously,
you know, your your mother kind
of you know had a littledirection and and voice and you
know what she considered good, but like how do you know at that
young age, like, okay, there'ssome talent here.
SPEAKER_01 (03:53):
You know, I like I
have kids now, so I really don't
understand how she, you know, like cultivated that, like,
because I couldn't imagine mydaughter coming to me saying, I
can do it, and then she singsthis note and it's perfect.
And it's like, okay, I gottafigure out how to make sure that
you get the best things to dowhat you need to do.
(04:14):
So she she's a superhero to me,honestly, because I couldn't
imagine having that role like atall.
SPEAKER_02 (04:20):
What song was that
that you sang like in front of?
SPEAKER_01 (04:24):
Uh, the song that I
sang, I think it was called
There Is Hope.
It was a gospel song.
Um, and she made me sing everylike we were we were in the
garage with that mic stand, singing every weekend to make
sure when I got to church I knewall the words, all the notes.
So she was like really heavilyin my life trying to make sure
(04:46):
that I was gonna sing because ofthat moment under that piano.
SPEAKER_03 (04:51):
Do you have any
memories of it?
Or is it like you know, whatyour mom shared with you?
SPEAKER_01 (04:54):
Yeah, it's what she
shared with me, but I do have
memories of she bought me thiskaraoke once she found out I
could sing.
She bought me this littlekaraoke machine.
So she has pictures in the houseof me just holding the mic,
walking around with my littlebraids.
I remember doing that, but Idon't remember none of the other
stuff.
SPEAKER_03 (05:09):
She's like whatever
mama told me.
Uh, when did you start makingmusic?
Like, do you have an early age?
SPEAKER_01 (05:15):
Do you remember
that?
Yes.
Uh, I think I was like six.
I started singing melodies.
And I'm gonna always talk aboutmy mom because I think what she
did was amazing.
Like, I was always walkingaround the house singing
melodies, and so what she woulddo is she'll come to me, she's
like, What do you hear?
Like, what words do you hear?
And I would tell her what wordsI would hear, and she would help
me write the song.
(05:36):
So I think that helped me learnhow to write music just from
hearing the melodies in my headat six years old.
SPEAKER_03 (05:42):
Did she have a
background in music?
SPEAKER_01 (05:43):
Or yes, so my whole
family on my mom's side, they're
musicians, singers.
So, yeah, like when you come outin my family, yeah.
When you come out, people arelooking like, What are you gonna
do?
Oh are you gonna be a musician?
Are you gonna sing?
What you gonna do?
Okay.
SPEAKER_02 (05:56):
So you write your
own music.
Yes, you write all of your ownmusic.
I write a lot of my music, andyou're the voice behind all of
it.
I love that.
SPEAKER_03 (06:02):
You real polygamy
superstar.
SPEAKER_01 (06:05):
Thank you.
SPEAKER_03 (06:06):
And you have kids as
well.
SPEAKER_01 (06:07):
Yes.
SPEAKER_03 (06:07):
So are you how old
are they?
SPEAKER_01 (06:09):
Ten and four.
SPEAKER_03 (06:10):
Okay.
So are you looking the same wayyour mom was looking?
Are you kind of like, what areyou gonna do?
Do you have any talent?
SPEAKER_01 (06:17):
Um, yeah, because my
son, he loves to play.
And my daughter, she's aperformer.
I know she's gonna be aperformer because she does it
like when I sing, she's like,Yeah, yeah, she's like, Mommy,
let me do it.
Let me do it.
So I hope that I could be as youknow good as my mom was for me
to them.
You will be.
Yeah, you will be.
(06:38):
I'm gonna try my best.
SPEAKER_03 (06:39):
They've been
teaching me this.
SPEAKER_01 (06:41):
You know what I'm
saying?
SPEAKER_02 (06:42):
So the song we just
listened to, Money, which is my
official summer anthem.
I know that's right.
I I'm I'm I'm I'm vibing withit.
Thank you.
You wrote that song as well.
SPEAKER_01 (06:52):
Well, I wrote it
with uh Makiba, she is an
amazing writer.
Um, and we were in the studio, and she was just like,
basically, you need somethingthat's gonna do what it did for
you.
Yeah, I've I promise I felt it.
I'm here, I felt it.
And when I heard it, I was like,Yeah, this is it.
This is this is the one.
So I'm happy that y'all like it.
SPEAKER_03 (07:12):
We oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01 (07:13):
Trust me.
SPEAKER_03 (07:14):
We play it back
right now because um we could
talk about the voice a littlebit.
Like, what was the process likeuh getting on there, going on
there, the experience?
SPEAKER_01 (07:25):
The experience on
the voice was it was amazing.
I did not have any expectations,I didn't know what to expect.
Um, but I was super excited.
And when I got there, everybodywas so welcoming, so nice.
Um, I was very nervous, likebecause I never did anything
like that before.
But being around the voicepeople, they all made me feel
(07:48):
really comfortable.
And each week they were cheeringus on, you know, nonstop.
And so it was an amazingexperience.
I got to meet some amazingpeople, I got some lifelong
friends, and it was really dope.
Caitlin.
SPEAKER_03 (08:00):
Who were some of the
the people you met?
SPEAKER_01 (08:02):
Um, I got a lifelong
friend, and his name was Jeremy.
He was in the top nine with me.
Um, but as far as meeting, I gotto meet my favorite coach, Adam
Levine.
I got to meet John Legend.
Um, I got to meet KellyClarkson, and I got to meet
CeeLo Green.
I I got to meet a lot of greatpeople, and it was amazing
(08:23):
singing for these people, andthey thought that I was great.
That was like they saw thevision.
Oh man, it was such a dopeexperience.
SPEAKER_02 (08:32):
How does it feel uh
being the first black winner on
The Voice?
Is that something that likemeans something to you, or it
was just like you're just happyto be there as a winner?
SPEAKER_01 (08:41):
Ooh, both.
I was happy to just be in anumber, can't lie.
But when I found out that I wasthe first black woman to win, it
was like it was a big eye-openerbecause I'm from a very small
town, you know, everybody knowseach other.
My mom went to school with myfriends, parents.
And so it was like I wasbringing something back home to
(09:01):
my folks.
And so being the first blackwoman, come on now, that's been
everything.
SPEAKER_03 (09:07):
So you were talking
about Adam as well.
I know he uh fought to be yourcoach.
So what was that experiencelike?
Um, how long did it go on?
SPEAKER_01 (09:16):
It was, oh my God, I
didn't know how to feel in that
moment.
Um, I think my son really likemade me like come back to life
because they called him onstage.
Um, I think my son made thedecision for me because my house
is definitely a maroon fivehouse, and I didn't realize how
much he listens to the musicthat I like.
(09:37):
So when he got on stage and theyasked him who was his favorite
singer, and he said maroon five,I was like, okay, got it.
SPEAKER_03 (09:43):
That's who we're
gonna choose.
You were a maroon five fanbefore going on.
SPEAKER_01 (09:47):
Yes, I was.
SPEAKER_03 (09:48):
And then seeing Adam
there, it's like a full circle
moment for you.
SPEAKER_01 (09:53):
Yes, because I think
at one moment I was, I think I
was like maybe 16, and they weregoing around, they did a music
video and they were going aroundsinging at people's weddings,
and I was like, get marriedbecause I really want you to
sing for me.
And then like being on the voiceand being on his team and him,
you know, falling in love withmy voice.
(10:15):
It was, it was, ooh, it wasmind-boggling because what is
happening right now, this issomebody that I listen to daily
and they like what I do.
So it was a really good feeling.
I don't even want to hold you.
SPEAKER_03 (10:27):
I bet so it was
good.
Um, how long was he coachingyou?
SPEAKER_01 (10:31):
Um, we were there
for five months, I think.
And he he really built myconfidence for real, for real.
It was because I'm alwaysnervous.
Anytime before I say, yeah, man, anytime before it don't give
nerves to me.
SPEAKER_02 (10:47):
It don't give nerves
to me.
SPEAKER_01 (10:48):
Anytime before I say
I'm nervous.
And he just basically let meknow, like, hey, you kill it
every time you do it.
You got to tell yourself thatevery single time.
And that really built myconfidence a whole lot.
So each week I came back withwith more and more.
And I watching it, I seen thatthat advice really, really
(11:09):
helped me each week.
SPEAKER_02 (11:10):
Speaking of Adam
Levine and Kelly and Sila, all
these big names that you've gotto sing in front of.
Who would you say is like yourdream collaboration to work
with?
Who do you want to get in thebooth with and really make some
Chris Brown?
All day.
Oh, breezy.
We got some breezy fans inthere.
We got some breezy fans inthere.
All my life.
We were listening to some breezybefore you got in here.
(11:32):
So you got reposted by him, correct?
SPEAKER_01 (11:33):
Yes, I did.
Okay.
Uh huh.
So y'all can only imagine I wasin that house screaming.
SPEAKER_03 (11:39):
So let's let's go
back to the day.
Let's let's run the day down.
Um, I don't know exactly whatyear it was.
SPEAKER_01 (11:45):
I don't either, but
I will tell you exactly what I
was doing.
I was sleeping, and um I haddone this uh song.
It was called Best Part byAnaya, and he reposted it at
like, it had to be like 3 a.m.
my time.
And I kept getting all thesenotifications, and I'm like,
(12:07):
what's going on?
And I look at my phone and itsays Chris Brown, and I'm like,
nah, nah, and so I look and it'shis official page, and I was
like, oh my god, nobody was up,so I couldn't call anybody.
Don't laugh.
I just start cleaning up.
That's all I could do to passthe time until everybody woke
(12:28):
up.
But as soon as like 6 a.m.
all night, as soon as 6 a.m.
hit, I called my whole family.
Like, y'all are not gonnabelieve this.
And so we all just we had a goodlittle party that night.
SPEAKER_03 (12:42):
So, what was like
what what came out of that?
What was the next few weeks orfew months like?
SPEAKER_01 (12:47):
Oh, it was it was
dope.
It was like everybody started tocome to my page and like really
listen to because I started justposting original songs that I
was writing, and so people werecoming back listening to my
music.
So I was getting moreengagement, more engagement.
So it was at that time, I was oncloud nine because what Chris
(13:07):
Brown loves my what I do, likethat.
That's an amazing feeling.
SPEAKER_02 (13:11):
Who would you say
like growing up was like your
biggest inspiration for yourmusic?
Obviously, you have a beautifulvoice, you have a coaching.
SPEAKER_01 (13:19):
Like I would say
Whitney Houston played a really
big part.
Um, Aretha, definitely.
Um, if we're going gospel, I'mgonna say Smokey Northful, Fred
Hammond, all of those.
My mom made me listen toeverybody, every genre, anything
that you could think of, just soI would know exactly what I
wanted to sing and how I wantedto sing.
(13:41):
And now that I'm a little older,I respect that lady so much.
SPEAKER_02 (13:45):
And what would you
say was like the difference?
Obviously, growing up, you hadyour mom, she was like your main
coach, and then you go from thatand you jump on the big stage to
Adam Velveen.
How was that difference fromlike, okay, you have a star in
Adam Velveen, and then you haveyour mom.
Like, how is that?
SPEAKER_01 (14:02):
Well, if I gotta be
honest, Adam he reminded me a
little bit of how my mom works.
Like, he's really likestraightforward, and I love
that.
Like in music, I feel like youhave to be straightforward.
I need to know what's happening, how you feel about it.
And he wasn't shy at all to tellme what he liked, what he loved,
you know.
And so it wasn't too far apartfrom my mom.
(14:24):
Can't lie.
SPEAKER_02 (14:24):
Shut up, mom, shut
up, mom, shut up, mom.
SPEAKER_03 (14:27):
We love the mom.
Um, what was the process like?
Like, it's coming from someonewho can't sing on QV.
Like, how do you get coached tomake it to that next level?
SPEAKER_01 (14:37):
Um, you know, that
is a good question for mom.
She, I will tell you, she had mein rehearsals every weekend.
Um, I was doing, I was singingat somebody's church every
Sunday.
Like, she made sure that I knewevery aspect within music,
within performing.
Like, she didn't play like thatat all.
(14:59):
And so getting on that stage, itwas like, okay, I have to use
everything that she's evertaught me in this moment,
because that was my moment.
That's how I felt.
And I told her, I called herthat night when I won.
I was like, girl, I appreciateyou.
I really do.
Because everything that shetaught me, you would she knew
nothing about music.
(15:19):
She didn't go to school formusic, any of that.
So for her to be able to teachme all of those things, not
really knowing, and then megetting older and being able to
do that on stage.
SPEAKER_03 (15:30):
Ah I know that was
everything for her.
SPEAKER_01 (15:31):
Ah, what?
And then seeing her on TVcrying, like we saw, we saw it.
Yeah, it got me.
SPEAKER_02 (15:37):
Shout out to mama.
Yeah, it got me.
Did Adam's coaching at all liketweak your technique and how you
sing?
SPEAKER_01 (15:44):
Or yeah, well, yeah,
like I said, the confidence
part, like I come from a smalltown and nobody really, you
know, knows too much about thebig cities like that.
Nobody really makes it out fromIrvington.
And so being with Adam and himloving hearing me sing, it was a
big eye-opener because I singfor my church and for my local
(16:07):
community, you know.
And to get out here and sing infront of a mass bunch of people
is just like, and they love it.
It's like, okay, all right, guys, I can do this again.
Yeah, now I get to do the BETawards.
I'm I'm blessed and and and youknow, highly favorite in the
Lord.
SPEAKER_03 (16:25):
Amen.
Amen.
I love it.
We're gonna do a quicktransition, because they had a
game for us to play.
I don't like games.
I like these games.
We like a game.
All right, yeah.
We like a game.
Also, if there's any music youwant to share, promote that we
all need to hear, feel free to.
SPEAKER_01 (16:47):
Look, y'all just
heard money.
I got brag out too, so y'allmake sure y'all check that out.
SPEAKER_03 (16:51):
We we we gonna we're
gonna listen to Brag too.
All right, basically, the waywe're gonna go, we we gotta we
gotta listen to some artists.
You're gonna choose one, this orthat.
SPEAKER_01 (16:59):
Oh lord.
Okay.
Oh yes.
SPEAKER_03 (17:01):
Oh yes.
SPEAKER_01 (17:02):
Okay.
SPEAKER_03 (17:03):
Once you choose one,
we're gonna go to the next one.
Then you it's basically gonna belike a little bracket.
SPEAKER_01 (17:07):
Like, okay.
SPEAKER_03 (17:07):
So we'll start with
one and then go from there.
SPEAKER_01 (17:10):
Okay.
SPEAKER_03 (17:10):

Sierra.

SPEAKER_01 (17:14):

SPEAKER_03 (17:42):
We're going a little
newer school, Kelly or Doja Cat.
SPEAKER_01 (17:46):
Oh my God.
Y'all did that on purpose.
Because I love Doja.
She's a leaper just like me.
Well, you gotta pick one.
I'm gonna pick Kelly still, because you know I love singing.
I'm gonna pick a lot of things.
SPEAKER_03 (18:00):
Kelly's still

Uh Kelly or Christina Aguilera.

SPEAKER_02 (18:27):

fascinators that she I'm
surprised.
SPEAKER_03 (18:30):
She got a little
voice on her.
SPEAKER_01 (18:31):
Ooh, it's beautiful.
SPEAKER_03 (18:33):
She do.
Oh man, Christina had a shortrun.
Arianna or Eli's girl, DemiLovato.
SPEAKER_00 (18:44):
I'ma still go with
Ariana.
Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03 (18:50):
Uh Ariana or Adele.
SPEAKER_01 (18:52):
Ooh, Adele.
All day.
SPEAKER_02 (18:55):

SPEAKER_01 (18:59):

SPEAKER_02 (19:01):

SPEAKER_01 (19:04):
I'm gonna go, I'm

I love Adele.
SPEAKER_02 (19:09):
I know that hurts.
Love me some Adele.
That's your girlfriend.

SPEAKER_03 (19:15):

SPEAKER_01 (19:19):

Okay.
I'm gonna still go with my girl,Adele.

SPEAKER_02 (20:10):
That's a tough one.
What'd your man say about it?
What'd your man say about it?
SPEAKER_01 (20:13):
He was so we were
arguing like about Beyonce and
Rihanna.
He's a Beyonce fan, and I waslike a big Rihanna fan.
But if I gotta go, I'm gonna gowith Beyonce.
We we had that argument already.
SPEAKER_03 (20:23):
So is it like a
