This week's CEO Dirk Roberts, ownerof Roberts Brother's Painting. Dirk,
good morning, Thank you so muchfor joining us. How are you today?
Good erin Thank you and also i'dlike to say thank you to yourself
(00:21):
in the station. To this platformthat lets us spotlight small businesses like myself.
Absolutely great to learn about local businessesin the area. So Dirk,
let's begin there somebody who maybe doesn'tknow a lot about you, tell us
what you guys do at your company. Yeah, Roberts Brothers Painting workforce generation,
family owned company into your X tierpainting, residential and small commercial,
(00:47):
basically any kind of painting we offer. Now, how long have you guys
been in operation? Carl Haverfield startedthe business in the late forties early fifties,
and and my grandfa Woody Roberts andJim Roberts. They were original Roberts
Brothers. That would be my grandpaand my great uncle. And then the
(01:08):
next generation was my uncle Danny Robertsand my dad Dave, and then I
started when I this summer I turnedfifteen years old and I've had the company
ever since then. All right, terrific to learn this morning and hear the
voice of Dirk Roberts, this week'sCEO. You should know he is the
owner of Roberts Brothers Painting. Well, Dirk, they ought to know where
(01:30):
are you located at in the area. We're in Shelby on fifty two Mohegan
Streets, right across from Glenn Surplax. All right, everybody knows where that
is in the area, so goodto learn about that. Now, Dirk,
tell us how about the radius thatyou guys have with your company.
How far across the area do youguys do work. We'd like to stay
(01:51):
within an hour from Richland County. We will depending on client needs. We
may travel a little farther. Wetry well up to the lake and do
some things. We travel with Columbusfor certain clients. But mostly we'd like
to stay about an hour from home. All right, terrific. Now,
could I ask you is there somethingin the area that your company has worked
(02:13):
on that people might be Hey,I know that anything you've worked on people
would know about. Yeah. Theone that I can really remember that that
was a fond memory was the AlcoveRestaurant in Mount Vernon. We got an
opportunity to work in there. Itwas really neat project. There was designer
from Columbus came in and they actuallyset that restaurant back through pictures and things
(02:37):
like that. We set it backto how the original restaurant looked and if
any folks ever have been there,it's really unique on the inside now,
Derek, In terms of a job, you know, in terms of size
you mentioned you go to people's homes. It can be you know, residential
could be a business. I wouldassume you do all types of jobs then
(02:58):
correct rightly, anything from you know, exterior to interior, feeling, walls,
any of the trim. The onething that's really became a trend is
folks have the stained cabinets and theywould like to have those painted. So
we offer a service where we actuallycome in, remove the doors, take
(03:20):
those off site, pray those,do the frames the boxes on site,
and so you update the kitchen. It looks like a new kitchen when you're
done at a fraction of the costand the time frame, you know you're
not tearing up a whole kitchen andlosing your kitchen. You know, for
three months. It's normally turned aroundtimes about a week or so. All
right, terrific to learn the storyall about Dirk Roberts and his company.
(03:43):
He's the owner of Roberts Brother's Painting. He's this week's CEO. You should
know, well, Dirk, let'sstep away from work for a moment find
out a little bit more about you. So if we could, let's step
back to the beginning, and ifyou would tell us where was Dirk Roberts
born w Ohio. I'm a whippIt grad, so go with it.
(04:04):
So that's where I was born andraised. Derek, I think I think
I heard you say you were aboutfifteen years old when you started working,
because this course is, you know, as a family company. You mentioned
dating back about four generations. Didyou know growing up I was going into
the family business. Were there areother aspirations? Tell us about going to
high school and then after high school? Yeah, after high school? Then
(04:27):
I just this is really the onlyjob I've ever had. The summer I
turned fifteen, Exampaul came and pickedthat up and saw me later on a
couch and said, what's that boydoing? And he said, let's put
him to work. So That's whatI've done ever since. All Right,
the rest is history, Derek. Now, when it comes to your company
in different you know, projects andjobs, I'm sure it can vary how
(04:49):
many people you need just based onthe job. How many staff members do
you have those kind of things.Yes, I keep my crew really small
so that way it's just hands on. And there's three guys on my crew
that I have with me. Joe, my lead guy, has been with
me thirty years so, and Ihave Cody and Kenny that they both have
(05:13):
a couple of years under their belt. I'm really excited about that because younger
guys coming in and learning the tradeis something that this doesn't happen as much
as I'd like to see it.Well, before I let you go,
and while we're having a good conversation, have you guys been busy? Had
things been good for you guys?Yes, we've been very blessed. We
have a lot of repeat clients, generations of families that I've had the opportunity
(05:36):
to work for. What I reallylike is it's the word of mouth kind
of thing. You know, We'vebeen around four generations. But I'll meet
people and it's like, Wow,I've never heard of you. Well,
basically, my dad and my grandpaboth taught me. You know, if
you take care of people, they'lltake care of you. So the word
of mouth like that's you know, every almost every client I go to,
(05:58):
they go, hey, we gotyour name, so and so you did
a great job at there, andnow we'd like to have you work for
us. Well, that's terrific, and word of mouth going on the radio
today, so much bigger audience. This morning, we're glad to shine the
spotlight on a local company from Shelby. Again. We're talking about Roberts Brothers
Painting with the owner Dirk Roberts. They started he mentioned back in the forties
(06:20):
fifties. So before I ask youmy final question, one that I didn't
have in mind until now, andyou mentioned doing great work, quality work,
you know, great reputation. Youknow, that's something that's very very
important. And it sounds like whenyou guys come to do a job,
you do a top notch job,and that's why people keep asking you back
right right, that's really the wholemagic to you know, having a successful
(06:46):
business, and the generations before mehave laid the groundwork, and then you
know, I've been really blessed withthat end of it. And so now
we just go in and I knowthat we're doing the right thing because I
get called back from the same clientsover and over again. One thing I
do want to say is how appreciativeI am of all the folks we've had
(07:08):
over the years. That's really importantand I never want to lose that aspect
of, you know, taking careof people. Awesome to hear. Now,
Dirk, I forgot to ask you. We talked about where you're from
in Shelby, and you mentioned alittle bit about you know, father,
grandfather, you know in the business, but it didn't I don't know if
you're married kids. Tell us moreabout Dirk Roberts and the family. Yeah,
(07:29):
my wife and I Jen, Wehave a son and a daughter.
I have a son, Jordan, and a daughter Gracie. All right,
now, how about when you're notworking? And I'm sure running the business
takes a lot of time, Butwhat do you do in your spare time?
Do you have any hobbies? Ido? I really enjoy. The
two things I really enjoy is Ireally enjoy grilling barbecue and smoking that kind
(07:49):
of stuff. It's just really relaxingyou know, I get a weekend or
I get some time. That's somethingI really enjoy. Put a brisket on
or some ribs or something like that. And then the other thing is I
love, you know, sports andwatching the Browns, buck Eyes, things
like that, and I have wehave a group of guys to get together
on the weekends and uh yeah,we we get to really enjoy each other's
(08:13):
company and hopefully watch a win.All right, Well that sounds good,
and I know I gotta let yougo, but I want to give you
kind of the final message. Somebodyhears your voice. Hey, I would
love to get in touch with RobertsBrothers Painting. I'll have them come out
