This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for October 12th, 2020.


Australian scientists say the virus that causes Covid-19 can survive up to 28 days on surfaces. That includes phones, stainless steel, vinyl, and cash. The national science agency said they also found the virus survived longer at lower temperatures.


New York authorities have handed out over $150,000 in penalties since Friday in its new hot zones. That includes five fines for the maximum allowable penalty specifically for Orthodox religious gatherings. The crackdowns have mostly been in Brooklyn and Queens.


The World Health Organization is now appealing to world leaders to stop using lockdowns as the primary control method for the coronavirus. The statement claims the only thing lockdowns achieved was poverty.


A tipping point. That’s where the UK’s deputy chief medical officer says the kingdom is with COVID-19. Jonathan Van-Tam said the worst is yet to come if “we do not all act now”. The worry is winter. He says, “We’re in the middle of a severe pandemic and the seasons are against us. Basically, we’re running into a headwind.”


And Iran announced its highest single-day death toll with 251 confirmed dead. Two senior officials have been infected. The total confirmed death toll now stands at 28,544, making Iran the hardest-hit country in the region. Nearly 4,500 patients are in critical condition.


The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Jerauld, SD. Aurora, SD. Faulk, SD. Roosevelt, MT. Norton, KS. Falls, TX. Golden Valley, ND. Johnson, TN. Chase, NE. And Miner, SD.


There are 2,644,141 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Virginia, Maryland, Missouri, Texas, Illinois, and Alabama.


The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, and Utah.


The retransmission rate is currently highest in Montana, New Mexico, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Alaska. While the lowest retransmission is found in Mississippi, South Carolina, West Virginia, Delaware, and Washington.


There’ve been a total 214,767 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 2.81%.


The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Florida 90. Texas 28. Georgia 23. Louisiana 20. Massachusetts and Arkansas 17. Minnesota 10. And California, Illinois and Tennessee with 9.


Globally, there are 8,312,364 active cases.


There are 332,766 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours, compared to a high of 359,265.  


The five countries with the most new cases: India 67,757. United States 41,935. France 16,101. Russia 13,634. And the UK 12,872.


There have now been 1,075,750 deaths worldwide. Up 5% over 14 days.
