Rugs (05:06):
We all buy them, but how often do we
consider criteria like placement, material,
pile, and size when doing so?
In bedrooms specifically, rugs are all toooften overlooked in favor of the main
event—your actual bed—or they act as meresupporting actors to window treatments,
lighting fixtures, and wall colors.
We’re here to change the narrative (05:27):
Rugs have
immense potential for turning the place where
you spend about a third of your life into astylish slumber sanctuary.
According to Mina Lisanin—founder of the NewYork–based, award-winning interior design
agency ML Interiors—rugs make bedrooms cohesiveand intentional.
(05:51):
“They add warmth, softness, and a layer oftexture that instantly makes the room feel more
inviting,” Lisanin tells ELLE DECOR.
Per Rebecca Ward of Rebecca Ward Design (06:00):
“A
bare floor feels like a room left unfinished—a
rug is the final layer that completes thespace.
It’s the artwork for your floor!” Whether it bea thick, plush rug in neutral tones or a
multihued, low-pile creation, the optionsreally are endless.
(06:23):
But where to begin?
Lisanin suggests thinking about materialsfirst.
She favors natural ones like sisal and jutethat “not only look sophisticated but also
provide durability and comfort underfoot, whichis essential for a bedroom.” Next, fix your
attention on colors and patterns—specifically,on whether to go big and bold or play it safe
(06:47):
with something more subtle.
When all is said and done, the final componentof spicing up your bedroom with a rug is to
decide on placement.
“For bedrooms, I love placing a large rug underthe bed that extends out on either side and at
the foot of the bed.
This placement not only makes the room feellarger but also ensures that the first thing
(07:12):
you step on when you get out of bed issomething soft and cozy,” Lisanin says.
Sarah Hargrave, owner and principal designer ofthe interiors studio-slash-curated shop the
Collective, has a slightly different take onplacement.
“I prefer the rug to stop right ahead of thenightstand and dresser if there is one, then
(07:33):
have the appropriate scale away from theopposing walls,” she tells us.
The beauty of rugs is that, if you’re ever notquite satisfied with their look, you can always
move them.
Don’t be afraid to play around!
Bedrooms, after all, are all about you.
Below, we’ve rounded up some expert-approvedbedroom rug ideas to get your creative gears
(07:56):
turning.
You and your bedroom deserve the very best, after all.
First, tap into natural materials.
Rugs made out of natural materials like jute, sisal, hemp, and bamboo are fool-proof
accessories to bring some warmth to yoursleeping space.
There may be health benefits, too.
(08:18):
Natural materials like wool and silk arehypoallergenic and improve air quality.
Wool naturally purifies air by absorbingpollutants.
What's more, according to Joelle Nesen, president and lead designer of Maison Inc.,
wool rugs change the acoustics in a space, dampening sounds in ways that other materials
(08:43):
just cannot.
Though natural rugs are known to comepredominantly in neutral shades, this bedroom
vignette makes it clear that pattern play isnever out of the question!
Next, be eclectic with your bedroom rug.
The Georgian rug in this Tbilisi apartmentdesigned by Eka Papamichael is just the pop of
(09:04):
color and graphics needed to take the space'sblue theme to new heights.
All this is to say (09:09):
Do not shy away from a
little spunk when it comes to your rug
selections.
Choosing a rug that contrasts with thesurrounding decor can add a bold, unexpected
pop of personality.
This approach can make the rug a statementpiece that draws the eye and adds depth to the
design.
(09:30):
Another idea is to experiment with faux hiderugs.
Cowhide rugs, like a faux zebra one, are theultimate showstoppers.
Take a page from how Brazilian designer SigBergamin placed one in his Parisian
pied-à-terre's bedroom—slightly off-kilter, ina way that works to elongate the space and keep
(09:53):
all conventionality out of it.
Go vintage.
Vintage designs add character and a sense ofhistory.
They tell a story.
After gazing at the pure craftsmanship of aCaucasian rug in a Spanish home designed by
Lorenzo Castillo, we could not be more inagreement.
(10:13):
Vintage rugs can last for generations withproper care and cleaning—slowly but surely
becoming a veritable family heirloom.
Keep a common color thread.
High-contrast rugs have shock appeal, sure toinspire many a 'where'd you get that stunner?'
question, but there is just as much value inkeeping it toned-down in the color department
(10:37):
and matching a rug's hues with your room'soverall palette.
In a Ken Fulk-designed bedroom, the rugintegrates perfectly with the four-poster bed,
limestone fireplace, and painted commodes.
Having something that threads in and out of thespace—from the pillows to the chair to the
(10:59):
rug—ties everything together.
Emphasize the space's size.
To create the illusion of your bedroom havingmore square footage than it actually does,
follow simple rug placement advice.
Do not let the bed land on the rug completely.
Pull it out about two feet from the wall.
In a Lisbon bedroom, the antique kilim rug ispulled out a bit less than two feet, but the
(11:24):
fact that it is not flush with the wallnonetheless makes the room look more spacious.
Choose a high-pile design.
Who does not love taking the first step of theday and having their feet land on a rug that
feels like a hybrid between clouds and cottoncandy?
In a kids' bedroom by Jean-Louis Deniot, theMoroccan rug is as plush as it is visually
(11:46):
engaging—meaning low-pile rugs are not the onlyones that offer pattern and boldness.
Layer, layer, layer.
Fall is coming in hot, which means layering:
not only 'parkas over sweaters' but also 'rugs (11:57):
undefined
over carpets.' In a guest room, there is not aninch of bare floor showing—courtesy of the
light brown carpet, which is saved from averageJoe appearances by the brightly patterned rug
over it.
(12:17):
Considering the fact that wall-to-wallcarpeting has been a hot trend for the past few
years, you should keep layers top of mind whendecorating your bedroom.
We give you full permission to mix and match.
Think small with your rug.
Use smaller rugs to define different areaswithin the room, like placing a runner beside
the bed or a small accent rug near a readingchair.
(12:41):
In Ralph Lauren's Montauk home's primarybedroom, the abundance of natural materials
practically calls for something small andorganic-looking.
Notice how the rug contrasts with the smooth, white linens and polished wood floors—creating
an oasis we would not ever want to walk out of.
Low-pile rugs to the max.
(13:04):
If you are not enthusiastic about rugs that arehard to clean, invest in a low-pile option—like
a striped wool carpet by ABC Carpet & Home.
Low-pile rugs are not only easy to clean butalso many options are machine washable!
Round it out.
If you are already thinking outside the boxwhen it comes to your bedroom rug's patterns,
(13:28):
colors, and orientations, why not extend thisattitude to its shape?
In the twins' bedroom of a RobertCouturier-designed New York City townhouse, the
circular rug is not only a way to break freefrom the shackles of rectilinearity but also an
opportunity to introduce something genuinelyfun into the mix.
(13:51):
Let your rug speak loud and clear.
If you have spotted a beautiful rug but are notsure how it will mesh with your bedroom
interiors at large, buy it anyways—and then letit guide the rest of your stylistic decisions
in the space.
Embrace peaceful neutrals.
If your biggest bedroom design wish is tocreate a space conducive to maximizing REM
(14:15):
sleep, lean towards neutral tones.
Going neutral means avoiding potential clashingwith your wallpaper, drapes, and other room
elements while tapping into a 'less is more'philosophy.
Geometric rugs for the win.
If you are a fan of modern rooms, you will be afan of geometric, pattern-happy rugs.
(14:37):
Their angularity can be replicated in otherelements like wallpaper to ensure continuity.
Locate your rug size sweet spot.
A rug can either make or break a space.
If it is too small, it will get swallowed up bythe room.
And if it is too large, you will not have theparameters to walk in your space and feel like
(15:00):
you are being grounded by it.
Achieve a Goldilocks kind of balance in whichthe rug grounds only a specific area but is
still large enough to make itself known.
Pair your rug with your bedding.
If you do not want your bedding and your rug tobe twins, at least allow them to be cousins.
Ensure the rug's hue integrates well with thebedding to create a visually cohesive space.
(15:28):
Let the views do the talking.
If you are lucky enough to have bedroom windowsthat open up to a whole forest, do not allow
the rug to steal the show.
Instead, let it be graciously subdued (15:39):
an
addition, but never a distraction.
Have a black and white moment.
The good news about a black-and-white rug isthat it will never go out of style.
Contrast in rugs makes them look very luxe.
Choose a more faded rug look.
(16:00):
For those who want the best of both worlds—apatterned bedroom rug but one that will not
feel too flashy—the best solution is to go witha product that is distressed and thereby adds
lived-in character to your homey hideout.
When in doubt, go custom.
If you have not been able to find anything onthe rug market that you envision being the
(16:23):
perfect fit for your bedroom, go the customroute.
Custom sizing is critical when it comes to rugsbecause you are often working within spatial
parameters that may not be conducive tostandard rug sizes.
When it comes to the furniture you buy for yourhome, the sofa you choose is arguably one of
(16:45):
the most important, if not the most important, purchases you will make, and there is a lot
that goes into buying a sofa.
From finding the right size for your space todeciding whether or not you want to go big with
a deep, cozy sofa, the way you live factors alot into this decision.
One of the most important choices comes down tofabric and finding designs that can withstand
(17:09):
all you throw at them, sometimes quiteliterally.
While some homeowners are perfectly fine withchoosing a performance fabric that is easy to
clean, others enjoy the flexibility of sofaswith washable covers that allow you to tackle
the nitty-gritty of messes and stains withease.

Eight years ago, interior designer EmiliaCallero and her husband moved into their
2,200-square-foot bungalow in Portland, Oregon.
(23:59):
It was an exciting move that meant far morespace than their previous 700-square-foot home,
but although the new pad was bigger, some roomsdid not necessarily feel that way — especially
the kitchen.
“It was a hot mess!
It had a small nook with cabinets, which wasset up more like a butler’s pantry,” Emilia
(24:20):
says of the existing kitchen.
“The outer area of the kitchen has a door tothe outside, a door to the hallway, and a door
to the dining room.
It has low windows, so cabinetry would be achallenge.
In addition, it had zero appliances.
On one hand, this was great because we had areally blank slate.”
(24:41):
When they moved in, it was just the two ofthem, but they wanted to reimagine their home
to be a space that would be family-friendly fortheir future children — and their first project
in the home was tackling their outdatedkitchen.
The couple was eager to say goodbye to theexisting kitchen and took on the demolition
(25:02):
themselves.
“Then the ‘oh shit’ happened, where I was like,we need to make decisions,” Emilia says.
In addition to the teardown, they made somemajor structural changes, including opening the
wall (and adding beam framing, which came froma home in their neighborhood that was being
torn down), adding a window where the door tothe outside was.
(25:23):
She used SketchUp, software for creating 3Dlayouts of spaces, to envision a new floor plan
for the room.
Choosing the right spots for their sink (plustheir prep sink), oven, and refrigerator was
key for the new layout.
After choosing those locations, Callero workedwith professionals to design their custom
(25:45):
cabinets, painted in a dark teal (BenjaminMoore’s Newburg Green).
The couple also installed the tile backsplashand did all of the electrical work themselves.
The room was also painted in a fresh, creamywhite, Farrow & Ball’s Slipper Satin.
(26:06):
“We tried to marry my husband’s Oklahoma rootswith my love for the landscapes of my
ancestors’ villages in Italy, with the functionof a chef’s kitchen in the Pacific Northwest,”
Emilia says of her design inspo.
Instead of upper cabinets, Emilia opted foropen shelving.
But these are not your ordinary shelves — theycan still hide clutter, thanks to gorgeous
(26:30):
fabric curtains that slide across.
The pattern on the fabric ties in fabulouslywith the other colors in the space, which was
an important part of the design process.
The kitchen renovation cost around twentythousand dollars and took eight months to
complete (the couple worked every evening afterwork plus weekends).
(26:51):
The room was definitely a labor of love.
The most special part of the space?
“That we did this ourselves!
Sweat equity with a capital ‘S,’” Emilia says.
“And we stayed married!
LOL.”
Callero appreciates the new room’s openness andample counter space, but this is not the only
special room in the house.
