Michael Rockefeller, son of a wealthy politician, disappeared in 1961 while exploring the Asmat region of New Guinea. He was collecting sacred wood carvings for a museum but may have upset the Asmat people, who believed in revenge killings. After his boat capsized, he swam to shore and likely ended up in a village that had a grudge against outsiders. Many believe he was killed and eaten in a ritualistic revenge act. The Dutch government covered it up to avoid political trouble. His body was never found, and his disappearance remains one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in history.
