What does it mean to be 'successful'?

There is no shortage of answers, but deciding how you will define and measure success is one of the most important exercises you can ever do.

Why? Because unless you take the time to decide what it truly means for you to live a successful life you can wind up spending your entire life striving to achieve someone else's idea of a success, and never find your own.

Resist the urge to continue doing what you’ve always done - stop and do your own seeking to ensure that the motions you are making are giving you the life you want to be living.

SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
A deep change in the way that we live requires a deep
change in the way that we think.
I'm Carla Reeves, and this isdifferently.
What does it really mean to besuccessful?
There's no shortage of answers, but deciding how you will define
and measure success is one ofthe most important exercises you

(00:24):
can ever do.
Why?
Because unless you take time todecide what it truly means for
you, you to live a successfullife, you can wind up spending
your entire life strivingdesperately to measure up to the
definitions that others havecreated for you and end up with

(00:45):
a life that never felt like yourown.
I have found this to be true inmy life, and I watch my clients
in my private coaching programgo through a process of really
dismantling their own idea ofwhat success means and creating
one that is real and true forthem.
And maybe this is something wedo more than once as we journey

(01:08):
through life.
Today's episode is about arecent discovery I made.
I'm going through a Bible studywith a friend of mine, and one
of the recent exercises provedto be incredibly
thought-provoking to me.
And regardless of your faith orbeliefs, I believe you will find
this very thought-provoking too.

(01:29):
So the exercise asked us to readscripture and then write down
what the Bible was telling usabout success, what God's idea
of success is.
Here is what I wrote.
Be prepared for his return.
Be responsible for your ownspiritual condition.
Use well what God has entrusted.

(01:52):
Serve others well, as if theywere Jesus.
Stay awake and be prepared andbe a caretaker of your time,
talents, and treasure.
Then the next exercise was towrite down what the world tells
us about success.
And here's what I wrote.
And this is where it reallystunned me because everything I

(02:15):
wrote was the complete oppositeof the first list.
Number one, be distracted.
Number two, be disconnected fromyour soul.
Focus on outward appearances andstatus and title and money.
Spend, consume, spend, consume.
Serve yourself.

(02:35):
Be asleep and numb and waste orbe a control freak.
This really stuck with me forweeks and has become a new way
to measure success in my ownlife and where I want to focus.
And this reminds me of wheredifferently comes into play.

(02:56):
And it's how it's up to us, howit's up to us to stay awake to
what is true and what are thelies that our culture, our world
around us are telling us thathold us hostage to this
achievement vortex or thisillusion of someday that we've
got to just keep striving andstriving and we're gonna get

(03:17):
there, really?
And to make sure that I'mdefining success in a way that
aligns with my deepest values.
So my invitation to you doesyour idea of success fit
anymore?
How are you measuring success?
And does that make sense?
Is there something different youcould do or something you could

(03:40):
shift in how you're measuringsuccess that would literally
change everything?
From my heart to yours, don'tjust continue doing what you've
always done.
Stop and do your own seeking toensure that the motions you're
making are giving you the lifeyou want to be living.
Would you like some support inchallenging the old rules,

(04:02):
uncovering the blind spots thatkeep you from moving forward and
living a life that feels likeyour own?
If so, go to Carlareeves.com andbook a complimentary call with
me.
Have a beautiful day, everyone, and I will see you next week.

Bleep! with Ana Navarro

Bleep! with Ana Navarro

Fear thrives in silence and confusion. Ana Navarro rejects both. Her voice is an antidote to today’s chaos. Her new podcast, Bleep! with Ana Navarro, takes on today’s most pressing issues with the voices most connected to it: decision-makers, political leaders, cultural shapers, and people on the frontlines of the story. The conversations acknowledge the emotions we all feel—despair, sadness, fear— but emerge with knowledge, perspective, and hope. The belief is simple: fearless dialogue can transform fear into courage, and courage into change. When fear dominates the headlines, this show digs deeper. Because information, debate, and conversation don’t just ease fear, they give us power to shape the future.
