Papa Gnome: “I just take the negative and try to make it into a positive.”
In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sits down with a local legend who is impossible to miss but whose story is even more colorful than his outfits. Meet Gerald Wellman, known to many in West Michigan as Papa Gnome. What started as a difficult season of life—marked by a diagnosis of actinic keratosis (pre-cancerous skin cells) and the onset of PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease)—became the catalyst for a movement of joy.
Struggling with depression during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gerald found inspiration in a neighbor’s nickname for him. If people were going to call him a “garden gnome,” he decided he was going to be the best one they’d ever seen. He began crafting his own iconic gnome hats to protect his health and lift the spirits of those around him.
“I just wanted to make somebody smile just so I would feel better… just a simple hat, and young people come up and say, ‘Oh, you just made my year.'”
While Papa Gnome is famous for having over 200 handmade hats and an outfit for nearly every day of the year, his true impact is felt through his philanthropy. Papa Gnome doesn’t just wear the hats; he uses his platform to support the community that supports him.
In this episode, we discuss his work with:
I Am Third Kids Meals: Helping fight childhood hunger in our region.
Cannonsville Critters: Supporting local animal rescue and welfare.
Hearts of Ionia: Donating his time as Santa Claus for daycares and AFC homes.
Trufant Santa: Bringing the magic of Christmas to the “Stump Fence Capital” for the last four years.
Gerald Wellman shares a powerful message about handling “haters” and online negativity. When someone called him a “jester” as an insult, he simply decided to make a jester outfit. It is a masterclass in resilience and choosing happiness over bitterness.
Meijer in Greenville: The site of many “Gnome sightings” and community hugs.
Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival: Where Papa Gnome’s tie-dye outfits stole the show.
Trufant, Michigan: Home of the annual Christmas festivities.
