Chapter 69 Summary

Late at night in the FBI office, Javon Morris continues to struggle with the lack of concrete evidence against Roger Cortez. Though convinced Cortez orchestrated the assault on Steven Schroeder, Javon has nothing solid enough to hold him. A failed bluff about fingerprint evidence only reinforces Cortez’s confidence and leaves Javon at an impasse. With no viable way to justify a wiretap and no direct proof tying Cortez to the Jenkins case, Javon shifts his focus back to the cryptic message connected to Walter Jenkins’s disappearance.

Reexamining the phrase about warnings and consequences, Javon realizes he has overlooked a crucial question: if Jenkins became the “consequence,” then who received the original warning? His reasoning leads him to GenaSeed. Although Russell had initially seemed suspicious, Javon now believes he may have been deliberately framed. Seeing an opportunity to flush out the real culprit, Javon decides to move forward with a calculated plan and arranges an in-person meeting with Russell in Austin the following morning, masking his true intentions behind casual conversation and professional courtesy.

At the same time, Remington makes his move on the warehouse he believes Bravo has chosen as a hiding place. After confirming the building is unalarmed, he silently breaks in and advances through the pitch-black interior. The stillness is abruptly shattered when powerful LED tower lights snap on, blinding him and confirming he has walked directly into Bravo’s trap.

Realizing he must escape quickly. After tending to his own injury, he attempts to leave the area using what he assumes is Remington’s vehicle, only to discover it is a taxi tied to the earlier murder of its driver. Understanding the risk, Bravo returns the car to the warehouse, carefully removes all traces of his presence, disposes of his wet clothing, and cleans the vehicle.

With the scene neutralized, Bravo retrieves his burner phone and makes a late-night call to Derek, setting the stage for the consequences that will follow.
