Chapter 76 Summary

Tony’s staged arrest is carried out with precision as FBI agents arrive at the airport with weapons drawn, reinforcing the authenticity of the operation. Following Javon’s instructions exactly, Tony exits the plane under armed supervision and is handcuffed on the tarmac before being rushed away in an FBI vehicle. The silence during the short drive to the FBI building heightens Tony’s anxiety, underscoring how real the situation feels despite his consent to the plan. Upon arrival, he is escorted through secured areas and placed in an interview room, where Javon briefly reassures him that he handled the arrest well and that the next step, meeting with the Special Agent in Charge, is imminent.

Ned Harris soon arrives and listens as Javon explains the full scope of the plan, including Tony’s voluntary participation and the safeguards he requested. Ned expresses respect for Tony’s willingness to assist the investigation and agrees to formalize the arrangement in writing. At Tony’s insistence, the agreement is expanded to ensure future oversight by whoever leads the unit in the event of something happening to Ned or Javon. With those assurances in place, the tension eases slightly, and a moment of dry humor between Tony and Javon briefly cuts through the gravity of the situation.

Elsewhere, Bravo spends the evening alone in his hotel room, half-watching a Cardinals game while gazing out at the stadium below. His attention drifts from the score to memories of a life he left behind, of teenage friendships, carefree moments, and a first love lost to a tragic accident. The memory of Rosine Mathieu, the young woman whose death shaped the trajectory of his life, resurfaces with quiet intensity. Her loss marked his first encounter with death and ultimately drove him toward the military and the violent path that followed.

As the cheers from the ballpark fade into the background, Bravo is pulled back to the present. The contrast between the normalcy of the crowd and the darkness of his own life weighs heavily on him. Overcome by exhaustion and the psychological toll of recent events, he turns off the television and decides to rest, knowing that what lies ahead will demand everything he has left.
