Wel good Saturday afternoon, everyone, and welcome live to a
renovated Ralphe Myers Memorial Stadium on the campus of Caledonia
High School, where today on the drive to Ford Field,
presented by Vandalione Home Improvement, feed Division four semi final
on the MHSA Football Playoffs between eleven and one Crusaders
have Unity Christian and the eight and four Bulldogs of
(01:08):
Vicksburg with a golden ticket to the state finals next
weekend at Ford Field on the line. Hello every one,
as along with Tim swarfeling in for bu ginoday, I'm
Brett Pikita, Joe Aret, the third member of our crew.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
He's handling the.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Studio host and executive producer duties back in downtown Grand
Rapids and here we go, Coach.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Something that's familiar to you.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Glad to have you in the press box because back
in the day, people remember North Point Christian High You
went back to back years to the Division six semi final.
So what's it like when you get to the high
school football final four.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Well, first of all, if you're playing a Saturday after
the noon game in November.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
You know it's big.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
You know it matters, and you know there's something huge
on the line. There's nothing I walked around down on
the field before. I watch each community come into the stadium.
Everybody smiles, everybody's excited, the players are having fun. They've
had a great season up to this point. The golden ticket,
as you said, is that spot at Ford Field, and
that's what's on the line today, and I'm excited to
(02:06):
see what happens.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
People might remember a guy that played for you. That
was pretty good. Not on both those teams, but certainly
it was a standout for north Point Christian named Kenny
Willichis who started at Michigan State.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
But I go back.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
I mean, that wasn't too long ago, coach twenty fourteen,
twenty fifteen. From there, you went to Florida for a year.
You came back, if people don't know, great job at
Carson City. And then now in your second season, just
finishing up Atlakewood lke Odessa.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
Yes, Lakewood, Lake Odessa. We just missed out on the playoffs.
We're building slowly, doing it the right way. Had a
great bunch of kids, started seven sophomores this year, so
we're continue to build. And if you're born on a
Friday night next fall, wander over a beautiful Lake Odessa, Michigan.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Oh man, I tell you what I went through there
a couple of times, all the construction, and you're right,
I know they love their sports. Kind of a basketball
school back in the day. You're turning into a football school,
but a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Wrestling team's really good right now, yes they are.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
And by the way, going way back for Tim and
I in our media days, for those who might remember,
he was on w ZZM thirteen on Your Sidelines. Before that,
he was over in Detroit doing a lot of high
school sports as well as cover the teams in Detroit.
Got a chance to come over here and then when
he was a sports director, he asked me in the playoffs,
he said, no, we got a lot of time. We
got to fill on this show for thirteen Hindred Sidelines.
You cover sports which you like to hop on the
(03:16):
set and lo and behold, I got to do that.
I got to do Fox seventeen Slitz. So I thank you.
It's really fun to work with you again. But you
worked last week with Jason Hutton. So you saw this
Unity Christian team and I think everyone was shocked, even
coach Tibby, the way they performed against an excellent, big
rapid team. I mean, coach, they put up fifty plus
on the board in that win.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
Well, they do it what five times this year? And
they're explosive. A lot of teams, a lot of people
think of a wing ta team full house t three
flat in the backfield behind the quarterback under center. They
think of them as that they're just gonna plow it
down right, four or five yards at a time.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Not these guys.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
They will bust a trap for fifty, they'll run power
for fifty, they'll keep the quarterback for fifty, and they'll
throw it to a tight end for seventy. Like they
are explosive and in talking to coach Mark Case from Vicksburg,
he explained, they've got to prevent the big play their
number one goal on defense, prevent the big play. Stay
(04:11):
in the game. Because that's what they've done. Their group
has really grown junior leaden team. They've grown up, they
believe and here they are one game away from Ford Field.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
We've got a coach's conversation coming up with Craig Tibby.
I had a chance to talk to him today leading
up to this matchup. But we'll get into Vicksburg and
kind of their Cinderella story, if you will.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
At eight and four, farthest.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
They've ever been in school history in football, that was
their first regional championship. Kind of cool for coach Mark Case.
He's been a Detroit Lions Coach of the Year. You've
been that, I've been on that committee and that was
not too far back. But he celebrated his one hundredth
career victory at Vicksburg with that regional championship trophy A.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
You know, a tough place to play and win in Portland,
Yes for sure. And I went down and said, welcome
to the club. That was the one hundred You know
win club is something you never start out thinking you're
going to get. I remember when I we started the
program of North Point. I'm like, I just want to
in a game. Yeah, right, and you build it and
build it. And here he is and he hopes to
get one oh one today. But it's not gonna be easy.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
No.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
And one of the things for the fans listening, we're
gonna have scores from all the other games. A matter
of fact, they've already kicked off up in Cadillac with
our Lake Shore Game of the Week. You can catch
it on one oh seven mus the Moose. What a
great story. The Eagles of Kent City are twelve and
zero and they've got a quarterback go into Grand Valley State.
But I want to go to the quarterbacks today. When
you get this far, as you know, there's usually a
standout player, maybe a running back or a quarterback that
(05:29):
kind of leads that team. We've got two today that
are outstanding. Justin Phoebus what he's done and you saw
him last week. Kids, just to playmaker. He's not very big,
starting the secondary, last years at junior, now taking over
the quarterback position and he plays both sides. He is
phenomenal for you today, Christian and on the other side,
listen for this name.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
If they're doing well easton Moten.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
This kid has thrown for twenty seven hundred plus yards,
thirty two touchdowns to five I and ts.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
Scary thing. He's six three, two tens. He's only a junior.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Go yeah, well, like I said, a lot of their
key players are you and they're not afraid to throw
it around, and they will you know, they'll throw bubble screens.
They're really good with what Mike Leach would tell you
as a why cross yep, and they'll they'll attack. It'll
be interesting to see if if Unity goes some too
high safeties or they're gonna play cover three, you know.
(06:17):
And then Phoebus on the other side of the ball
is their leading rusher.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
I mean, talk about a kid that's everywhere all the time.
It is Unity Christians quarterback and I always excited. His
dad is the sid at Calvin University. He's gonna go
play for coach Fig at Calvin next year. Dynamic player. Also,
by the way, what a job coach Fig and his
staff have done seven wins this year. Yep, hats off
to them. I spent two months with them on their
(06:41):
coaching staff before I decided I want to get back
to high school trying to Fig.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Excellent guy.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
How about a couple other former high school guys with
outstanding years. Peter Sturzma Hope is off down the second round,
but I watched that whole Calvin game in person. Wow,
I think this might be his best bunch of flying Dutchmen.
But going back to his East Grand Apples days and
then we can't forget about he is playing today. We'll
update you on their scores. Tony and Eesa at first date.
What a story for Tony and East.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Yeah, I mean, he just keeps it going.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
And I think in today's new world of college football,
he's got one of his former players now at Mississippi.
Like it goes back to his days as a junior
college coach. Hey, come play for us at Farris State
for a couple of years. There could be even something bigger,
you know, win a couple national championship and then something bigger
on the line for your career. I think that's right
up his alley. I think he stays put. I know
(07:27):
people talk about him going to other places.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Why would you No. I think he's right where he
needs to be, and he's gonna keep winning.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
And they're taking on a former gleeac school at Northwood
today in the opening round the Division two playoffs. That's
a one o'clock kick up at Big Rapids, and I
said before, we'll have Joe Ernz keep an eye on
that score and pass it along as we can. We're
counting down to kickoff on this semi final Saturday. It's
brought to you by j and H's Family Stores with
our pregame coverage, now eighty locations across Michigan to serve you.
They grow every year Jane H's Family Stores. Stopping on
(07:54):
the way to your next game or on your way home,
We're gonna take a break and coming back on the
other side, we'll go to the montel Can Instruction Coaches corner.
I mentioned I had a conversation with Craig Tibby, what
a year for Unity Christian Back in the semi finals.
We'll talk about that year some of his players in
this matchup with the Bulldogs of Vicksburg coming up today
at the top of the hour. As you're listening live
(08:14):
to your home for the high school football Playoffs ninety
six to one, the game counting you down to kickoff.
Welcome back to the J and H Family Stores pregame show,
getting you ready for this Division four semi final. The
(08:35):
Crusaders of Unity Christian outright champs again in the OK
Gold eleven and one coming in taking on kind of
a newcomer in the Bulldogs of Vicksburg. They've never been
here this far and joined us in the Montel construction.
Coaches corner is head coach of Unity, Christian Craig Tibby
and Craig, I want to start with that first and foremost,
and you know, over the last few years, experience a
(08:56):
factor when you get to this point. How is your
experience and your coaching staff and your kids through the
years helped you now as you get ready for a
semi final Saturday, because it is different.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
Yeah, I know, I don't know, like you would think
that we would have some better answers and whatever, but
it really comes down to are these kids going to
be able to be focused. We've been talking to them
and working with them about it, but if they don't
show up prepared and ready to go, you know, you
don't move forward. When you're playing some of these teams.
You've seen it so far in the playoffs, crazy stuff
(09:26):
happens and you got to survive some of that.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Coach talk about that because it wasn't an easy road
for you guys to get here. I go back to
the Spring Late game two weeks ago. You guys are
down in the fourth quarter, come back, and then I
know you expected the Big Rapids game to be closer
than it was, but just an outstanding performance. Where your kids,
what have you seen for them so far on the
drive to Ford Field.
Speaker 5 (09:47):
Well, I think they're growing up as we go. It's
a weird thing. I look at that as being an
important thing that the advantage of being getting these extra weeks,
they start to learn how things go a little more,
what it takes. You know, we started out with Howard
Christian and that was a battle. We barely held on
with that one. And then yes, Spring Lake just they're
(10:10):
so well coached and disciplined. And then I think that
kind of geared the kids' minds a little bit to
be ready for this. You know they knew Big Rapids
is good. You watch them on film and man, they hit,
they do things right. They run a ton of stuff
on offense, fly around the defense, and so you know
we were all, I guess focused and ready for probably
(10:30):
one of our best opponents of the season, you know,
in big graphics, and I think it paid off.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Coach, I want you to talk about this particular edition
of Unity Christian Varsity football because you know, everyone harkens
back to twenty twenty one and that team thirteen and
one runner up to Chelsea and that unbelievable game at
Ford Field twenty eighteen. You guys win it Division five
Isaac to Slives now playing for the Lions was your quarterback.
But coaches always, and I think it's true because of
(10:56):
the turnover with high school football, say each team is different. Well,
I look at this team and how surprised are you
or how much have you enjoyed this season? Because you
lost a great senior classes a year ago that rolled
all the way to the district final, then you lose
to South Christian. Some of these kids that are seniors
now played on that team, but maybe in different positions,
like you're starting quarterback and Justin Phoebus, who started in
(11:16):
the secondary for you last year.
Speaker 5 (11:18):
Yeah, you know theebes is he's still in the secondary,
but boy, what a bigger role he has right now
is QB and it's been playing out of his mind.
But this team has grown together. They they've had fun.
You know, even in the middle of this season too.
You know, you could have talked to me and I said,
I don't know if we're going to have enough, you know,
And it's not that they're not good at what we're doing,
(11:41):
but just athletically some of the things. And they have
played together so well as a team a little bit
like I thought last year's team did too, And I
was just that would hurt, you know, because I felt
like I left those seniors down at the end of
the season and we should have been able to get
one there and move on and see what else they had,
and that wasn't meant to be. And I think these
(12:02):
kids learned from that a little bit too, is hey,
don't take it for granted. To make sure you're ready
each night. And they've really battled all season long, losing
to Prep. That was kind of a wake up to
a little bit saying hey, we're you know, we can lose.
We're not all that, so to speak. And I think
that was good for our psyche a little bit as well.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Undy Christian ed coach Craig Tibby joined us in the
Montel Construction Coaches Corner. It's brought to you each week
by Montel Construction. They can be your home team for
your next six year project roofing, signing, windows, get it
done before winner Montel Construction dot Com and Craig talk
about some of the standouts for you on offense and defense.
I always like it when coaches can acknowledge their kids.
But besides Justin Phoebus, who has stepped up for you
(12:43):
in different roles this year?
Speaker 5 (12:45):
Yeah, we've had kind of a revolving door with injuries
and such. Fabis has been steady, but you have Jared Debries.
He's been with us now for three years and he's
a leader on defense. He's our guy there in the
middle as a linebacker and we really depend on him.
So we rotate him out on oh a lot just
to try to keep his legs fresh. But when he's
(13:05):
in there. He does well on offense too. A surprise
for us was Ryer Defray as a running back. He
has finally started to care and what a difference it's
made for our team when when he's all in there,
he's a pretty decent athlete and doing some nice things
and in the backfield for us and Lucas Elliott love
what he does both sides of the ball. You know,
(13:26):
he's one of these guys that has to go out
and cover people, and then we asked him to block
and run the ball and he just steps up and
has been doing a nice job lately with some of that. So, yeah,
you depend on those guys. Our line up front, it's been.
Speaker 6 (13:40):
Somewhat steady, but some of those guys now are playing
a little bit more on deed, so we try to
get him out on oh a little bit, and so
other kids have had to step up, and it's been
really fun to watch the growth of these younger guys
and the.
Speaker 5 (13:52):
Seniors even to be ready for big stuff like this.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Jason Hutting and Tim Swore filling in did the broadcast
last week on one seven mus the Moose, and I
love it when you get another coach's perspective and one
of the things Tim lauded about. He said, you know,
Craig and Unity Christian, they always have physical linebackers. The
line player is outstanding as far as the polling guards.
But he says, they have great tight ends. And you
have two I know that you love again this year
(14:16):
and maybe throwing the ball a little bit more to
them right as a weapon.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
Yeah, we have in the past. This past game we didn't.
We started out the game with one and that was
a big one to Jhonathan Hucker. He's both of our
tight ends. If they fill in, they fit perfect is
what we want. The backups come in and do a
great job with things. But we have had some really
nice looks at some of our tight ends. Carter has
(14:41):
had some great receptions, kind of backbreakers for teams at
specific times, and it's kind of made a difference for us.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
So, coach, let's look at your opponent today. The Bulldogs
of Vicksburg out of the Wolverine Conference. They finished third
in that conference, tough with Niles and then Paul Paul.
They committed eight and four overall, four in three conference play,
so you know they're beatable. But talk about this team
and where they're at right now in the progression. Like
I said earlier, they won their first ever regional championship
(15:09):
in football, so uncharted territory for them. But I know
they're led by their outstanding junior quarterback Number nine. This
guy can really throw it.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
Yeah, he can. He can get it down the field,
and he's got guys that go get it. They're young,
I think, you know, when I look at this, one
of the things that scares me is they have been
getting better and better. So they had a little rough
spot there in the middle of their season, and you know,
from there they have just gotten better and better and better.
(15:37):
And these juniors now believe like they think they can
beat anybody, and they prove that by taking down Portland.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Then.
Speaker 5 (15:44):
I don't know if you saw the final moments of
that game, right, they wouldn't go away. They just hung
and hung and hung, and because I thought at some
point during that game and Portland was maybe going to
have a chance to kind of put them away and
finish this thing up, but they did not go away.
(16:04):
So that's one of the things. You know, they have
that big playability with that arm and receivers that simply
catch the ball. They it was fun to watch. You know,
I don't want to watch it this coming Saturday here today.
But they are good at what they do and they
play well. Undef they got good size up front. Their
interior guys are big, so it's gonna be a big
(16:26):
challenge today, coach.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
Let me ask you this.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
Finally, semi final sites are neutral, as you know, so
you can go all over the place. They try to
balance it between but with Vicksburg being down near the
Kamazoo area, you guys over between ground Rapids and Holland
not too far a road trip today to come to
the renovated Caledonia Ralphie Meyers Stadium.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
Is that a good thing as a coach? Or would you.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Rather travel a little bit just to kind of get
your team focused and locked in.
Speaker 5 (16:51):
It'll be far enough. It's probably gonna take us with
that bus, you know, twenty five thirty minutes maybe or
not a little less. I haven't really looked at it yet,
but you know, it's it's it's good to do a
little travel. It does settle them down a little bit,
but I don't think it will matter. We're used to
driving all over the place for every one of our games,
so it's pretty normal.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
I know you've enjoyed the ride along with the Crusaders.
Best to luck today, coach. Thanks for joining us here
on the pregame show.
Speaker 5 (17:16):
You bet, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Craig Tibby, what a story. Twenty three seasons. The only
coach that Unity Christian has had. He started the program,
folks back in two thousand and three was their first year.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
They went oh to nine.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
You know what they did after that, one and eight
one In eight two and seven they were four and
thirty two of their first four seasons. You could relate
to that starting a program at North Point Christian coach,
But since that time, unbelievable what they've done in their
back in the semi finals again taking on Vicksburg. We're
counting you down to kick off the Montel Construction Coaches Corner.
I hope you enjoyed it. Brought to you by Montel Construction.
(17:50):
My home team can be your home team in twenty
twenty five roofing, windows, signing, decking, sunrooms and more. Find
it out at Montel Construction dot com. We come back
after the right. Tim Swartz got his Vandalion Home improvement
keys to the contest. The teams are making their way
out of the plane surface for this one o'clock kickoff
in Division four.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
It's Unity Christian.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
It's Vicksburg on the drive to Ford Field, presented by
Vandalion Home Improvement. Here on ninety six to one the game.
We're about five to six minutes away from the kickoff
here at the newly renovated six point five million dollars renovation.
(18:31):
They're still in the process when the track and everything
coming a little bit later of Ralphie Meers Memorial Stadium. Coaches,
you know you've been here before. One of my favorite
venues to cover high school football. Now with the turf
and the expanded seas beautiful, I mean, we've got a
packed house. Vicksburg's never been here before. Here come to the
Crusader's Union Christian and it's time to kick a You
for you are Vandalion Home Improvement keys to the contest.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
Well, you know Vicksburg comes in a They know the
explosiveness of Unity Christian. They also know that Unity Christian
likes to go for two. We already know that Vicksburg's
won the toss and they chose to get the ball.
They want to get the ball, they want to score
first and make Unity Christian decide are they going for
two or they kicking extra points. They brought in a
freshman kicker last week Unity and he looked fine.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
But they do like to go for two. Make the
other team chase points.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
So if I'm sitting on Vicksburg's side, I always like
to get the ball first and make that team that
likes to go for two make those decisions.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
One of the things too, to keep an eye. And
you brought up the kicking game, Vicksburg. If you don't
excellent kick, oh, unbelievable kicker who is an All state
shortstop has already committed to Western Michigan coach. He's missed
one kick all year. Mitchell Bigel will talk about Mitchell Bayer.
He's a good one forty four for forty four at
extra points and the one he missed was over forty yards.
(19:45):
He's got ranged about forty five. Yeah, yeah, I watched
him in pregame.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
I would say if there was a you know, you
had to try a game winner from fifty, they would
do it with him.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
There's your Vandal at Home Improvement keys to the contest
with eighty years in the business, Vandal at Home Improvement
offers top notch contractor services to customers in West Michigan

maybe going out again this evening, and then listen to
the broadcast Eric Grassman his crew for more details, or

(20:16):
as well as right off Chicago Drive in Hudsonville. We'll

You in the opening kickoff, it's Unity Christian. It's Vicksburg
on the drive to Ford Field, and you're listening to
it live ony this Saturday afternoon right here on ninety
six to one The Game.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
West Michigan's FM Sports station ninety sixty one The game

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Are you ready? Semi Final Saturday? Here we go Unity
Christian and their home all blue uniforms with the white numbers.
They got the blue caps of the white strike down
the middle of the interlocking U. See as justin phoebus.
They're all around athletes, starting quarterback and secondary starter will
kick off, moving right to left ENDR Radio dial. As
we mentioned, Uni Christian won the toss. Deferred to the
(21:12):
second half. We'll get your sporting new starting lineups as
we go. But the Crusader is going to start on
defense and they are led by a dominant linebacker at
number twenty four.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
They funnel everything to him.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
Jared Devrees in All Region Division four player phoebus high
end of frank kick, taking on the fly inside the
five of the three, crossing to ten fifteen, bouncing the
outside twenty. It's gonna be hit and dropped there immediately
on the return that time for Vicksburg was number twenty one.
That's Quincy Schwartz five, eight hundred and forty five pound
junior and he was tattooed. First guy there, Levi Buller.
(21:44):
Is that a football name? Coach of what the senior?
Speaker 3 (21:46):
Yeah? The only thing he needs bo bullet.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
Bet right Easton Martin is your quarterback only at junior
sixty three to two ten. If Vicksburg is having a
day and things are going their way, you're gonna hear
his name a lot. He's thrown for over twenty seven
hundred yards coming in, thirty two touchdowns to just five.
I and T's number nine, and he's got some great
targets to throw to. One of those is Travis Hotstetler
forty seven catches, almost one thousand yards coming in and
(22:10):
eleven touchdowns on first down handoff right side and across
the twenty four out to the twenty five yard line.
Speaker 3 (22:17):
Nice pickup of four.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
They start the line of scrimmage at the twenty one.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
With this tribe.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
It was Jaden Kaiser, one of a handful of juniors.
Coach you talked about that in the pre game, especially
their skill positions.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
Absolutely, and they're just building growing in confidence. By the way,
unit he running their cover three right now with a
four men front.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
Two wider series left, one to the right.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
Fakeda Kaiser and now the quarterback goes on name across
the thirty five, got a first down, he can ramble
good to athleticism out to the forty. Nice pickup that
time of fifteen kind of confused the Unity Christian defense,
and it was Moten that time calling his own number.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
Yeah, it's a zone read you run in. They'd like
to run inside outside zone. He's reading the backside defensive end.
If he comes down, he's pulling the ball, keeping it
and that's exactly what he did there.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
I want to tell you about Michael Johnson and his
stature after this play first action, play action, look out
under some pressure and he's gonna be caught and go
down back at the thirty yard line defensively.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
Coming off the edge.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Jonathan Hucker, one of those big defensive end tight ends
that Union Christian has been famous for.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
Yes, and right there he wanted to run a little
play action hit his skinny post or slant uned.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
He took it away and he had nowhere to go. Now.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Both coaches will do a good job of rotating extra
players in to try to keep guys fresh on one
side or the other. But remember these are two way
starters when you get to this level. Division four six
for Vicksburg today, eight for Uni Christian second and long
two wide receiver set each way, they swing it out,
setting up the bubble scream completed at the thirty and
then going down and meet it at the thirty three.
Nice open field tackle that time, and I believe for
(23:47):
Unity Christian that was number twenty three. Levi Buller. It was,
and that's the key when you face a team like Visitor.
They like to throw the screens out on the edge.
You gotta be secure with your tackle. Graham Koobiak on
the catch, forty four catches for six hundred and forty
six yards coming in for number eighty. We talked about him,
Hosteler number ten. And then don't forget about McGuire. Bowles
love that name. He's got forty one catches and sixteen
(24:09):
touchdowns coming in third and long. Call it third and
seventeen from their own thirty three trips to the right
white side of the field, they worked in the left hash. Now,
moving up front, you had a wide receiver start early
and then defensive end jumping off.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
That's gonna go against the Bulldogs and this is not
what they need.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
They don't want to get behind the chains because now
you take a little bit more chances with the throw,
your interception rate goes up.
Speaker 3 (24:31):
So now it is third and long.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
Now Michael Johnson is an h back coach. They split
him out. He can't scan. It look like five seven,
two fifty in a seedior. I would you like to
tackle him?
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Yeah? I wouldn't.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
Third down and long call it third and twenty three
after the penalty from their own twenty seven opening drive,
no score nine fifty and ticket left to go.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
First quarter, a pump, big moting going for the home run.
Ball over the.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Top, got a guy out there incomplete at the thirty
two yard line. Pretty good covered step for step Lucas Elliott's.
But they went with the post battery and there you
see the arm of the junior mote and he aired
it out.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
Yeah, and Hosteler was one step short and all hauling
that in in full stride. So there was a chance there.
They just couldn't get it. And now they're gonna have
to punt and give that football to the powerful Unity offense,
Mitchell Buyer. Our first chance to see him.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
He's a good punter as well, folks, averages forty yards
per punt, his longest of the season fifty one, and
he'll be kicking it away from left to right into
rato dial one man back deepest Phoebus the quarterback. You
don't see that too often returning kicks.
Speaker 4 (25:31):
Then they like to go trips Vicksburg does. Out of
their punt formation.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
Buyer is going to kick it away low line driving
endover in kick hits it about the forty five of
Unity takes a favorable bulldog bounce inside the thirty five,
still rolling on the turfy at Ralphie Meyers Memorial Stadium,
all the way down inside the thirty. Good job of
flipping the field that time, by buyer, it'll be first
in ten. Unity Christian their first offensive look from their
own twenty eight.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
Yeah, forty eight yard punt there and with no return,
and it worked perfectly because he.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Hit it low, let it roll. They weren't gonna get
a return.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
And now they've got to play solid defense. Looks like
they're gonna line up in their four to three. Now
they're gonna walk a guy up, so they're gonna be
in a five front.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
Tell you what, Unity Christian has some big offensive linement.
Look at big number sixty eight. He is the right
tackle Hunter Camps in that lineup as Justin Phoebus brings
the play out leading rushers you mentioned for them. Coach
just under a thousand yards coming in sixteen rushing touchdowns, but.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
He can beat you with his arm.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
Two forty two of sixty one throwing over one thousand
yards eighteen touchdowns in his three I in ts first
out of ten. They keep it to Elliott bouncing on
the counteraction from right to left across the thirty five
tackle there, but not before he gets out to the
thirty eight yard line. He's close to that first down marker.
One of the big challenges when you face full house
tea like this. We talked about their tight ends being
passing third. Well, they are excellent blockers. They're gonna block
(26:53):
down on a double team. Then get to linebackers they've got.
Vicksburg has to keep their linebackers clean.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
I know you love their guards.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
We'll talk about them and a minute hand offf right side,
big holes the way to the outside, cross the midfield stripe,
dragging a whitby tackler. He's into Vicksburg territory. On the carry,
Big Jared Devrees had that huge game last week, four
rushing touchdowns against Big Rapids.
Speaker 4 (27:13):
Yeah, so Vicksburg started in a five front. They walked
another guy up to a sixth front. If you get
the kickout block, it's tough on the linebacker to get there.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
Jared Devrees six hundred and twenty two yards rushing, coming
in seven touchdowns. Quick cup of the football and off
Elliott left side. He's upended. Nice tackle there by Donnie
Yant the linebacker.
Speaker 3 (27:31):
For a short game.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
They'll spot it at the forty three yard line, gain
of two. That last play going to the forty five
second and eight o'clock rolls under nine minutes left to go.
Speaker 3 (27:40):
So it's Phoebus.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Devrees, Josh Bramer number thirty five the full back, and
Lucas Elliott in the backfield handoff Elliott trying to cover
up the football and nice job by Vicksburg on contained
because they saw two linemen leading the way drop him
at the forty we short of the first down. Big
play here, yeah, big third and five coming up in
for territory. How about they signaling the plays coach for
(28:04):
our audience at home. And the lineman to even have
wristband the little sleeves yet to look at. So everyone's
on the same page. Third and five play actions. Phobus
keeps on him, trying to turn that quarter and he's
gonna get a first time cuts back in the thirty five,
so quick inside the twenty five and he's down inside
the twenty yard line. Justin Phoebus a big run. How
many times have we seen that?
Speaker 3 (28:24):
This year.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Unity Christian now in the red zone first and ten.
You know that's their go to play.
Speaker 4 (28:29):
A lot of teams they come with counter or something
like that, or inside trap.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
They love to run the quarterback in that situation.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
How about justin Phoebus first year start. He's always been
a quarterback, but you kind of have to wait your
turn a little bit.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
They get you in.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
They'll thirty two varsity players, good number this year, quick
time tavy and they're.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
Inside the ten kicks outside inside the five battlet Flanso touchdown.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
How about that from nineteen yards out and guess who
number thirty five?
Speaker 3 (28:55):
Josh Bramer the rushing touchdown.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
Unity Christians strike first six nothing, it's the Crusaders.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
In front of Vicksburg.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
Yeah, and they just hit that quick dive and if
the linebacker isn't clean, it's a tough tackle.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
That's exactly what happened. The safety had to come up.
He tackled them with the goal line into the end zone.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
So both Unity Christian and Vicksburg quick starters throughout the year.
As far as putting points up on the board, but
put this one in favor of Unity Christian in now
the two point conversion coming up. Phoebus comes over to
get the play, so they've got some time trying to
put that pressure like you talked about. Coach on Vicksburg
early handoff right side just followed his blockers easily and
(29:35):
walked in Jared Devreese with a two point conversion and
with eight twelve left to go on this opening corner
of this Division four semi final, it's Unity Christian eight
Vicksburg nothing. You're listening to the Drive to Ford Field
presented by vandalion Holm and Frewman here on ninety six

So a nineteen yard touchdown run, Josh Bramer had the
(30:54):
two point conversion and it's Unity Christian this Phoebus kicks
off eight nothing I'm the fly taking the ten on
the left, hash coming across at twenty twenty five to thirty,
fighting his blockers, and he's doing a nice job of
following the wedge. That's old school terminology. But he's out
across the forty. Nice return that time by Vicksburg.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
Yeah, and they're trying to just get a middle return,
get as many yards as they can and if there's
a seam, you can bust it. It was much better
there because he stayed inside with the football, unlike the
opening kickoff where he tried to bounce it outside.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
Thirty yard return will recap that Unity Christian scoring tribe
with coach in a minute eight h six left to go,
first quarter, eight nothing Unity Christian Vicksburg their second look
on offense here this afternoon. Moolten out of the pistol formation.
Two out of receivers, the right, one to the left.
He'll hand off to the back that was to his right.
Not a lot of running room that time. Good job
on the defense, Jaden Kaiser, give him three. They'll say
(31:44):
forward progress out to the forty three second and seven
coming up with the Bulldogs.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
Yeah, outside zone.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
They'll use a little h back to help on the
play side, and it's slow to the hole and then
you're supposed to burst. There was nowhere to burst, nowhere
to puncture that the front of the Unity Christian defensive line.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
One of the guys who's all reasons, I know you
like coaches number fifty three, Levi Offringa. He is a senior,
starts both ways, one of those defensive linemen up front.
Now the handoff Kaiser, there's on offering Bingo for a
loss back to the forty two. You weren't gonna block
number fifty three. Great job of staying home that time
to get him for a loss against Kaiser.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
Yeah, you know in Vicksburg's probably gonna have to go
to the air more and more this afternoon. Is this
game developed because UNI is winning the line of scrimmage?
Speaker 3 (32:31):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
You talked about their defensive ends Hucker, Carter, Skulton, but
Luke Sharda the other defensive line good four deep and
that cleans it up. As you mentioned for the linebackers
barrigerd Freeze.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
Now they're in a three front on a passing down.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Three wide receivers the right one to the left out
of the pistol, third and eight high snap bot controls it,
fires across the middle and complete.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
Don did he make the catch? He bobbled it that
they say, no, it hit curve.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Yeah, boy, it was right on the target, little deep
crawl route that time. But nice job and knocking away
it kind of bounced out of his hands on contact.
Vicksburg couldn't hold it in Gage Schidell. So now fourth
down and long and the Bulldogs will have to punt
once again.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
Yeah, and obviously not the start they wanted.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
And they need to get a stop this next time
because last week you knew to Christian got out in
a hurry twenty two nothing and Vicksburg does not want
to be in.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
That position now. His last kick was a good one
by Mitchell Bayer. Let's see if he's got a little
more feel to work with, he can push you to
Christian back Hi wobbly spiral boy, beautiful kick. Foebus has
to fair catch, call for it and make it at
the seventeen yard line.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
Nice job by Buyer. You can see the talent.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
He's also the backup quarterback and like I said, at
All States shortstop committed to Western Michigan where his dad
pitched back in the day. So a little family lineage there.
Speaker 3 (33:49):
Good looking athlete.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Yes, yes, sure so first down in ten and now
the Vicksburg defense up against it. Coach, you just don't
want to get steamrolled, and we saw that with a
very good, big Rapids team in that opening quarter twenty two.
Speaker 4 (33:59):
Nothing Christian last week. Yes, and so now you need
to Christians sitting there. They're gonna go back to the
stuff that worked at first drive. But I guarantee you
their coach is sitting upstairs next to us. They're looking
at do we send it tight in right?
Speaker 2 (34:12):
Right?
Speaker 7 (34:13):
Right?
Speaker 3 (34:13):
Are they selling out to stop our run? And then
they may hit him win a pass?
Speaker 2 (34:18):
Don't you appreciate too all the little nuances? And you
see this with John Shillitoe back in the day with
Craig Tivvy about you get the lead, they can slow
things down right, take a lot of time off the
play clock. First down and ten, full house backfield, trying
to go wide, makes a man miss, nice cut up
the field across the twenty out to the twenty two
yard line.
Speaker 3 (34:35):
Jered de Freeze.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
Again, he's got at least five, coach, and that's what
you wanted. This offense that's up second and manageable at five.
Speaker 4 (34:43):
Yeah, but the frustrating part is Vicksburg did everything right
except get the tackle from the last yards. They strung
it out. They had guys out there, they just couldn't
get it stopped.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
Give them a gate of six of second and four
from their own twenty two full.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
Back over the right side, Elliott powered his way.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
Look at that offensive line with that rugby scrum push
out to the thirty yard line. Give them just as
much credit as the running back there first and ten
fresh set of downs Unity Christian on the move again.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
Yea, the linebacker was there for the dive. The problem
is he's got so much momentum. He hit him at
five yards.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
And took him to ten clock continues to roll towards
a halfway point just over six minutes. Break out now
fifty forty five, forty one man to beat Canny, still
fire and break the tackle inside the twenty five and
saving the touchdown that time for Vicksburg Maguire Bowls.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
But on the carry that time, number thirty five, Josh Bramer.
He also had a big game last week, coach.
Speaker 4 (35:35):
Yes, and they haven't had to run their power yet
because the dive is working so well, fixer's got to
do something up in the middle.
Speaker 3 (35:44):
Take that dive away.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
That was the full back just sliding off the back
side that time.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
There's their power now.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
Fake phoebis coming near sides, got a blocker inside of
fifteen to ten up the sideline. Tis from the pilot.
Speaker 3 (35:54):
Did he get in?
Speaker 5 (35:56):
Touchdown?
Speaker 2 (35:57):
Unity Christian justin Phoebixy takes it in from twenty yards
out and Unity Christian just like that, back to back
scores on their first two possessions.
Speaker 4 (36:08):
Lead at fourteen to nothing, so they get two lead
backs going to seagap. The running back then bounces outside
and the quarterback follows him down the sideline and there
just weren't enough people there.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
Impressive that time for Unity Christian.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
Remember they had not so good field position to start
this dry, but it didn't matter with some big runs.
Capped off with a Phoebus touchdown run two point conversion upcoming.
Speaker 3 (36:32):
Yeah, it's an eighty three yard drive started the seventeen
and then.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
Not much time off the clock playoffses Phoebus wants to
roll out to is right tipped. It's good he was
looking for Elliott. There was an offender there. It got
chipped in behind Elliott just scooping up. Look what I
found that time was the tight end for Unity Christian Hall,
and it was Austin DeYoung.
Speaker 4 (36:53):
It just might be the Crusader's day. We get a
play like that. Really, the two receivers were too close
to each other. Somebody's supposed to be the back of
the end zone, the other receiver just across the goal line.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
But it worked, and here we are.
Speaker 4 (37:05):
What did I say, You don't want to let them
get out to a quick start, Well that's happened. You
certainly want to stop the floodgates if you're Vicksburg.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
Two scores to two point conversions with five forty nine
left to go in the first at Unity Christian sixteen Vicksburg.
Nothing back with more from Caledonia after this ninety six
to one the game.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
All right, thank you, Joe.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Keep an eye on all those games with area teams involved.
Ported Central Division two. I know we got Lowell Mount
Pleasant Division three. Those scoring updates with Jell being brought
to you by Rapid Radios, the only nationwide LTE walkie
talkings with no monthly fee.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
Ever, great for families and more.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
We'll get back to that after this play first down
and ten and what with the short script kick returned
out to the thirty two yard line and now on
first and ten, Moten quick out pattern. Coach talked about
they'll do a lot of that today, and that's what
they need to do.
Speaker 4 (38:48):
You get the ball moving and Unity's last drive eighty
three yards three plays. I told you they are not
the grinders that a lot of teams are when the
wing deep.
Speaker 3 (38:56):
They are explosive.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
Yes, Travis Hosteller, by the way, catch there just shy
the forty at the thirty nine so gain of seven
second and three handoff. Kaiser left side goes a little
bit wide around the left end and he's got some
running room across the forty five enough for a first
down out to the midfields. Dripe good pick up there
of twelve, first and ten. Vicksburg on the move. If
(39:18):
you're just tuning in sixteen to nothing, Unity Christian Leeds
at this opening quarter five point thirty and ticking left
to go justin Phoebus. That last touchdown run of twenty
yards capped off with another two point conversion, this time
through the air. First and ten play action, Moten going
for a long shot up top and too far.
Speaker 3 (39:34):
The wide receiver was cutting in.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
He threw it towards the sideline incomplete that time, and
he was looking for number three Maguire Bowls.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
Yeah, I like a skinny post better than a fade,
especially in high school. You study statistics, right, The rate
of completions for a skinny post or a slant far
greater than a fade in high school football.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
Absolutely, I would agree. It's a tough throw, even at
the college level. So second in ten, they took shot
on first down, down sixteen to nothing. They got big
Michael Johnson, the h back stacked over on the left side.
Kaiser to the right of Moton gets the handoff trying
the right side. Not a lot of running room there. Defensively,
nice job by Unity Christian. Jack Portingill was over there
(40:15):
along with number twenty four Jared Devreese gained of one
to the Uni Christian forty nine third and nine coming up.
Speaker 4 (40:21):
Yeah, Johnson tried to get a kickout block there that
played a couple of plays ago. When they got outside,
he hooked the guy. I think they're better off hooking
because the dns right now are taking the inside gap away.
Speaker 3 (40:31):
Opening quarter being brought to you by a straight line fence.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
The Fencing Company and Grand Rapids with a Personal Touch,
offering both residential and commercial fencing projects. Call today for
your fre estimate at six one, six, four, four, three,
twenty five fifty of visits, straight line fences dot Com
third and nine. Moten out of the pistol, fires crossed
the middle. God is man, but he's gonna be a
couple of yards short of the first down. Marker, Boyd,
that was a bullet. He threw it nice and low.
Speaker 4 (40:52):
That's their bread and butter, little play action slant. It's
not a true RPO. I don't think most of the time, right,
but it looks a lot like it.
Speaker 2 (41:00):
Squire Bulls. Nice catch, they're going for it. Knees yeah
to the forty two of Unity Christian. They have to
get inside the forty pick up this first down. So
it was a gain of seven, fourth and two. Vicksburg
down sixteen to nothing. Bulldogs leave the offense out there,
deepest penetration they've had offensively in this game. Moten looking
across the middle, got his man Johnson. Oh what a
(41:21):
shot by Phoebus. Johnson is down and boy, I mean
that's Phoebus giving up like one hundred.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
Pounds and Lee Johnson took a shot.
Speaker 4 (41:30):
Yeah, I think it's just a win knocked out him.
Great catch by the way by Johnson, he did pay it. Yeah,
it is a first down.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Great catch at the twenty three hour line. Good throw
by motin two. But what a shot by the safety
chest to Phoebus. This kind of tells you what type
of athlete that kid is.
Speaker 4 (41:44):
Yeah, he bounced off him and uh, you know, Johnson's
rolled over now. I'm pretty sure he just got the
wind knocked out and he's trying to get his breath back.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
He had his ribs kind of exposed, Yeah, and his head.
It was a clean hit, as you know, great hit.
Do this real quick. While we're waiting to see the
trainers are with Michael Johnson of Vicksburg. Let's go back
to the studios right now, and standing by is Joe
Errant with this rapid radio scoreboard update.
Speaker 3 (42:28):
All right, thank you, Joe.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
He'll keep an eye on the college games and what's
coming up later today with Michigan and Michigan State on
our stations as well. Now, standing ovation for Michael Johnson.
Great news, Big fella's gotten up and gonna walk off
on his own power. I think you're a right coach.
Just got the wind knocked out of him.
Speaker 4 (42:43):
Right in the ribs, and uh, you know he's up
and moving now. So that's a good sight to see
because he's a key.
Speaker 3 (42:49):
Player for them.
Speaker 4 (42:50):
They need him in the football game on offense and defense.
But here's Vicksburg now bought the twenty three and they're
looking at the sideline.
Speaker 3 (42:58):
Let's see what play they come up with.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
Vision three mount Pleasant by the way, seven to nothing
early going against Lowell. Will keep an eye on that
motion man from left to right across the back of
that line of Scrimen's. Now they're gonna throw it out
in the flats to him, big fella, he's got the
completion trying to turn it up field with the block
and nice job of kind of creating havoc over there.
Got Ford progress to the twenty is making the catch
that time for Vicksburg was big Anthony Marc Case the coach,
(43:21):
his son six five.
Speaker 3 (43:23):
Two fifteen of the senior.
Speaker 4 (43:24):
Yeah, and I tell you what, the corner out there
did a great job did He did a great job
of taking away the edge kinda cut back, and he's
got help coming from his.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
Teammates handoff dal Kaiser as they pulled everybody that way,
tried to cut back underneath and inside the twenty down
to the eighteen yard line. Great job by the Union
Christian defense. That could have been a big play right there.
They had good blocking out.
Speaker 4 (43:46):
To lead the way four down territory. So you know
you've got two plays to get five yards as a
play caller.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
Here pressive drive here for Vicksburg trying to answer the
second score. Ready for Unity Christian third and five. They
work from the Unity Christian eighteen yard line and in
the red zone. Two wide receivers are left to the right,
looking looking across the mill. Throws at low and complain
for a first down inside the ten to the nine.
Kind of side arms slung that one beautiful catch by McGuire.
Speaker 4 (44:10):
Bowls in a great throw. Again, this is what they
need to do. Yeah, it's a lot of slants, a
lot of posts. Take a shot now and then throw
a bubble now and then. And I think they're they're
right where they need to be right now.
Speaker 2 (44:23):
And you said, from Unity Christian standpoint, Big Rapids kind
of runs a similar offense, so they are used to
the passing game.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
They did get a preview of this last week.
Speaker 2 (44:31):
Two wide receivers to the left handoff now to Kai's
are trying to bounce outside nothing, do what He's gonna
lose yards at the eleven. Great job defensively for Unity
Christian coming up off the bottom of that pile was
number twenty four. That's Jared Devreez. He is a beast.
You know Welson is playing well, coach, and you just
mentioned it a minute ago. He was that corner you
(44:51):
were talking about with Levi Buller. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (44:53):
Number twenty three, yep, yep. Do an excellent job.
Speaker 2 (44:57):
Second down and eleven. It's second in goal situation. Trips
to the right, rolling to his right out of the pistol.
Guy somebody throwing the end zone got a man. Oh
he made the catch, but I don't think he got
a foot down.
Speaker 3 (45:08):
He did not. Great effort there, coach.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
I know it's tough for you and I to kind
of see that, but Graham Kubiak, one of their outstanding
receivers and only a junior, made the catch, just couldn't
get the foot down, and it was because the pass
was just a little bit wide that time by Moten.
Speaker 4 (45:23):
Took him a little too far to the sideline. But
again now they're in four down territory.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
So like the call, like you said, though, yes it
was open, Yes you need to throw it a little
bit quicker third and goal from eleven two to oh
five left to go into first. Unity Christian leads at
sixteen to nothing, but the Bulldogs threatening in the Crusader's
red zone. Two wide receivers each way, one back of
the back there looking left, not there, Mote.
Speaker 3 (45:44):
Noow dragged down from behind.
Speaker 2 (45:46):
Great job with the pressure coming from the backside for
Unity Christian.
Speaker 4 (45:51):
The initial slant was not there. He had to pull
it down. They're gonna kick a field goal here, try
to get on the board.
Speaker 2 (45:58):
Carter Skulton getting the sack that time defensive end from
the other side, the junior for Unity Christian.
Speaker 3 (46:04):
I like this.
Speaker 4 (46:05):
You know you need a little moment Abby to start
believing something. And here's the other thing. The fact that
Unity goes for two, you're at least making up some
of those two pointer points.
Speaker 2 (46:15):
We mentioned Mitchell Byer, he's only with missed one kick.
I don't want to Jason here, coach, this is going
to be a thirty two yard attempt out of the
hold of Donnie Ants from the left, Hash snapers a
go on and hold us down.
Speaker 3 (46:27):
Kick is on the way. Look good to me and
it's good. There you go.
Speaker 4 (46:34):
So they're on the board now. They need to regroup
a little bit. You get through this first quarter, one
thirteen left in the first and then get themselves back
on offense after stop.
Speaker 3 (46:45):
Thirty two yard field goal up in good for Vicksburg.
Speaker 2 (46:48):
So with one thirteen left to go, as coach mentioned,
it's Unity Christian sixteen Vicksburg three back with mores. You're
listening to the Drive to Ford Field presented by Vandaliano Improvement.
Here on ninety six to one, the game open.
Speaker 3 (47:40):
And Chimps score. Filing in from bunt Geno.
Speaker 2 (47:42):
This happening show went after the third member of our
crew sixteen to three hours score this Division four semi final.
It's brought to you by Vandalia Ho Improvement.
Speaker 3 (47:49):
Coach.
Speaker 2 (47:49):
I want to go to you real quick before this kickoff.
It's what you talked about after that drive, their most
successful drive. Got to get some points, right, got to
come away with something.
Speaker 4 (47:55):
Absolutely, you got to feel good about yourselves. You know,
these are high school kids. They need to feel good,
feel like they've got a chance. It makes up some points.
Now they've got to find a way to stop. You
need Christian on defense.
Speaker 3 (48:08):
By the way, money is Mitchell Bayer.
Speaker 2 (48:10):
That makes him eight for eight on the year from
inside of forty yards for a high school kicker.
Speaker 4 (48:15):
He got to go play college football too, when he's
not playing baseball onside.
Speaker 3 (48:19):
Yeah, they go on side kickballs lose.
Speaker 2 (48:21):
Oh, and it went through the hands of the Unity
Christian up Man. It was trying to feel that like
a shortstop and then it was there for a minute,
but someone behind him I believe.
Speaker 3 (48:31):
It was No, it was fifty two Byler Boseman came
up with a recovery.
Speaker 2 (48:36):
How huge is that because now not only do they
keep the football, but they got great field position.
Speaker 3 (48:42):
Vicksburg kind of rolling the dice a little bit.
Speaker 2 (48:44):
It's at the Bulldogs forty nine.
Speaker 4 (48:46):
I don't mind the call them No, I don't no
think it was aggressive call.
Speaker 3 (48:49):
You got a really good kicker. He kicked an excellent one.
Speaker 4 (48:51):
The first guy didn't get the ball Fixford just didn't
get it quick enough.
Speaker 2 (48:55):
It was one of those where it took a funny
hop right, which is what you want and the first
guy there had it squared in, but it just kind
of slipped through his hands. It was loose between his legs,
and luckily another Unity Christian member of the kickoff return
team hopped on it. First down in ten Phoebus handoff
left side.
Speaker 3 (49:11):
And he stopped.
Speaker 2 (49:12):
Gonna lose about a half yard I'll say a full
yard to the fifty yard line on the carry that
time for Unity Christian was Jack Portingather Junior. I think
first time we've called his number today, second and eleven,
coming up with the Crusaders under a minute and rolling
left to go here this opening quarter, I noticed Ryan
Gruber over here playing defense for Vicksburg. He seems to
be spying Phoebus on this side, So they've assigned somebody
(49:36):
to take away that quarterback. Keep how many guys of
the line of scrimmage? Boy, they got six up there,
maybe even as much as seven. Handoff the other way,
keep it around the right hip, got a block trying
to make a man mess. He's so quick and elusive
and a nice job. Just kind of dead to rights.
He squared up the defensive back trying to stop at
the forty five, then went to his right and got
(49:58):
two or three more yards.
Speaker 3 (49:59):
Nice pick up there.
Speaker 2 (50:01):
They say he's down and out at the forty two
yard line of Vicksburg. So seven yard gain on second.
Now make it eight because they lost the yard so
third and short.
Speaker 3 (50:10):
Coming up for U see McGuire, Bulls.
Speaker 4 (50:12):
Poor kid was out there on no man's land trying
to make a solo tackle on a kid that.
Speaker 2 (50:17):
Is very shifty all reach in Division four justin Phoebus
as an athlete, straight T formation, behind handoff full back,
and he's got the first down plowing over the right
side inside the forty down to the thirty eight yard line.
Got up a yard gate of four on the carry
that time. Jared defrees first and ten to Crusaders.
Speaker 4 (50:42):
Oh, probably be the last play, first scorer. They're gonna
let the clock run. I think they're gonna let the
clock right.
Speaker 2 (50:47):
Coach Timmy disquired get up with the official to make
sure he was on the right time.
Speaker 3 (50:51):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (50:51):
They do have the game clock here, which is nice
that you can see on the field.
Speaker 3 (50:56):
So final seconds will take away and that'll do it.
Speaker 2 (50:58):
From the opening corner of this Division four semi final,
we got a good one Unity Christian after one sixteen
to three over Vicksburg. We'll come back with more action
from Ralphie Myers Memorial Stadium here in Caledonia after this
on ninety six to one the game, Unity, Christian is
(51:19):
not a freight coach, as you know, to rotate five, six,
maybe as many seven running backs in there this time
Levi Buller as we welcome you back to the core. Yeah,
and he's got the first out and now Vicksburg gonna
jump off sides after that run by Buller taking inside
the thirty to the twenty eight, freshut of downs, first
in ten.
Speaker 3 (51:35):
Now a penalty against Vicksburg.
Speaker 4 (51:37):
Yeah, the big, the big tough guy, Luke Deal for
Vicksburg up front, jumped off sides there.
Speaker 2 (51:42):
Yeah, Luke Deal. Great story, All Region Division four for
their region, both as an offensive lineman and a defensive
line goes six, four, two fifty five at a senior.
Tell you what, we got some future college football players
on both sides. Coaches you know today with these teams. Absolutely,
here's Unity at the twenty three yard line already first
and five after the penalty, straight t formation, handoff full
(52:04):
back inside the twenty close to that first down mark.
Let's see where they spot him and to get another
new face rotated in there. This is your guy Ryer
Devray there. He is a senior and Devray had a
big game last week.
Speaker 3 (52:17):
He did.
Speaker 4 (52:18):
And I think you know right now Unity is able
to rotate guys more so than Vicksburg and that could
really play out.
Speaker 3 (52:25):
In the second half.
Speaker 2 (52:26):
Handoff Elliott now counteraction right to left, trying to get
his speed to the outside inside the fifteen of the
stiff arm at the thirteen and wrestled down finally by
his shoulder pad at the ten yard line, but not
before he's got first in goal for Unity. Christian again
Crusader's knocking out the door again.
Speaker 4 (52:41):
In that time they ran power to the far side
and had two lead blockers and they just hand him
out numbered and got a great kickout block on the end.
Speaker 2 (52:50):
Got a shout out chext from Eric Graspan and the
crew listening today on from our friends at vandal On
Home Improvement. Beautiful really Saturday afternoon, A little cooler in temperature. Boy,
we can't beat the sunshine coach.
Speaker 4 (53:01):
No, I mean, remember this is week four of the playoffs,
and you know we were spoiled this.
Speaker 3 (53:07):
Fall, Oh we really were.
Speaker 2 (53:08):
I was telling people I didn't want to jinx it
because I had one more outdoor game. But oh, phenomena.
One of the best falls I can remember coaching. Some
great temperatures too, and not too hot early, which was nice.
I mean nice days, but not get those ninety degree
days in those first couple of weeks. First and goal
from the ten from the left, task, straight t formation,
different quarterback in. They're not Phoebus as they're rotating in.
(53:32):
It was Neil Nickel, the junior quarterback. They're interesting. Phoebus
might have had to get his hand checked out a
little bit, some tape on it. He came out, so
they went with Nickel.
Speaker 4 (53:41):
Headed back in though yep, coaches give him to the
play justin Phoebus the senior quarterback, first year as a
starter at that position, even though he's played it all
the way through the ranks going up.
Speaker 2 (53:51):
They had obviously a senior quarterback ahead of him last year,
but started on the defensive end.
Speaker 3 (53:55):
Haven't seen a pass yet, Yep, here we go.
Speaker 2 (53:57):
We did for the two point, but not in regular
in the field of play, and they run with a wing.
Speaker 3 (54:05):
Yep, here we go. Handoff.
Speaker 2 (54:08):
Now that's Devray on the quick fullback dive and he's
down to the five yard line, so to be third
in goal, just inside the five.
Speaker 3 (54:17):
There for you to do, Christian.
Speaker 4 (54:18):
First time they've shown the formation with a wing back
behind the tight end.
Speaker 3 (54:22):
Yeah, they put Elliott over to the right there.
Speaker 2 (54:25):
But still ran what they love to run. That's divedfree.
Is gonna come in checking out Levi Buller. There's nine
forty eight and ticking left to go.
Speaker 3 (54:35):
First half.
Speaker 2 (54:36):
This second quarter being brought to you by Holt Jepson
Physical Therapy. More on them and all their locations. They
want to get their patients here within twenty four to
forty hours and right now you Christian wants to get
another touchdown. Third and goal from the five, straight t
double tight end set handoff. Eliott cuts back close to
the goal line, fighting, fighting the great great after there
(54:56):
was a fumble there. There was a fumble right on
the goal line.
Speaker 3 (54:59):
They're gonna say he did not get in just short.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
Wow, what a push there between the Vicksburg defense and
the Unity Christian offensive line.
Speaker 3 (55:07):
Trying to help out Elliott. They'll mark him just short
of the goal line. The ball did come loose, but
they blew it dead.
Speaker 2 (55:14):
Fourth and goal though coming up here from inside the one.
Speaker 3 (55:18):
Oh Man, here we go.
Speaker 2 (55:20):
Let's see what Craig, Tibby and Uni Christian obviously gonna
leave the offense out there.
Speaker 3 (55:23):
Dial up here.
Speaker 2 (55:25):
Could Vick fer get a turnover or a stop be
big for the Bulldogs? Trailing sixteen to three. Phoebus under center,
double tight end, straight t formation, handoff, second man through
powers his way into the end zone on the score.
Jared de Friese again the senior running back, so he's
picking up right where he left off last week against
(55:45):
Big Rapids.
Speaker 4 (55:45):
Yeah, and they get a double team in a gap,
so b gap becomes your run gap and you lead
with two lead running backs through and an easy touchdown there.
Speaker 2 (55:56):
So Bramer, Phoebus and now Defrees getting it on the score.
Weren't act with touchdowns for Unity Christian two point conversion upcoming.
So impressive, Like you talked about, coach, I mean, they're
built for everything there. They could be an explosive offense,
they could be a power offense you can mix in.
I think more and more Craig has been comfortable mixing
(56:17):
in the past with the capabilities of his quarterbacks tages.
Speaker 3 (56:20):
He holds that in his pocket. Right if he needs it,
they're really good at it.
Speaker 2 (56:24):
Phoebus on his hip play action rolling right side, he's
gonna dive in for the two point conversion. Justin Phoebus
does it again, and just like that, it's twenty four
to three Unity Christian over Vicksburg with eight fifty four
left to go first half.
Speaker 4 (56:39):
Yeah, and they're three for three on two pointers and
they've done pretty much whatever they wanted to do right now.
And I think that was Vicksburg's worst fear, like they
needed to slow him down, they needed to prevent the
big play. And right now you need a Christian doing
exactly what you saw him do last week, and that
is absolutely dominate the line of scrimmage. Then the playbook
(57:01):
is wide open. And if they commit, that's the hard
part for Vicksburg. If they commit to take those runs away,
they're gonna hurt him with tight ends.
Speaker 2 (57:09):
By the way, pretty good athletes at the quarterback position
over the years. A guy named Isaac Tasla comes to mind. Right,
he's now playing for Detroit Lions.
Speaker 3 (57:17):
Yeah, he's okay.
Speaker 2 (57:17):
Right back in the day when they want it all,
he was their quarterback. And I told people, if you
watched him, he'd never long jumped before. They had him
go on to the track team. In his first year,
he sets the school record. Just that kind of a
freak athlete.
Speaker 3 (57:32):
Doesn't surprise me at all.
Speaker 2 (57:35):
All right, So if you're Vicksburg, you're like, Okay, we've
got to get a good return here, and then we
need to get a touchdown. As we get score updates
being passed along to Joe, aarrant will have Joe break
in when we get a chance here, We'll keep it here.
Phoebus at short, big fellas goack off. Yeah, Johnson back
in there, which is good news. Remember he got shaken
(57:55):
up a little bit on that last catch and he
just plows his way forward.
Speaker 3 (57:58):
Let's see where they come up with the four progress.
Speaker 2 (58:00):
I guess they're gonna give them the forty yard line.
So good starting position for Vicksburg with this drive we
mentioned the second quarter being brought to you by host
Jepson Physical Therapy. Today's players have worked hard to get
their bodies ready for competition, and Holst Jepson Physical Therapy
wants you to stay in the game no matter what
level of activity desire. They get patients in within twenty
four to forty eight hours Holst Jepson Physical Therapy, Restoring Body,
(58:20):
Reviving Spirit. Well the Holst jeps In Physical Therapy halftime show,
coming up, scores and more with Joe what's a conversation
with my friends and LMSU and Matt Cook with our
Touchdowns for Kids campaign, it's all coming up at the break.
First down in ten play action Moten going deep look
and too tall that time for his intended receiver.
Speaker 3 (58:38):
That was Hosteler. At the thirty five a Unity Christian.
Speaker 4 (58:41):
Yeah, and Phoebus, who's playing safety, was right there, so
the throw had to go where it was or get picked.
And they really did a great job at taking away.
Now we'll see. So they've got trips this way because
they've got the big guy at wing here catch back.
Speaker 2 (58:57):
You're gonna see Molten like you talked about, just throw
it all long. They're gonna have to down three scores.
There's a run handoff Kaiser, but you see again Boom
just runs into a wave of blue at the forty four.
Speaker 3 (59:10):
Nice pick up there of four. But again Unity Christian
will take that all day long.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
Yeah, I mean, but because they run so much play action, right, Brett,
they've got to run the ball a few times to
make that work.
Speaker 3 (59:23):
Kubiak now and Hostetler split to the wide side.
Speaker 4 (59:27):
I would like to see them in dubs this time,
So two on each side, and that's what they're gonna do.
Speaker 3 (59:32):
That moves the safety. Now their unity's in too high.
Speaker 2 (59:35):
Look Johnson in the slot in your side with bowls
that way. Third down and long. Look, got it comes
some pressure trying to boid the blitz it. He goes down,
couldn't keep his feet as he trying to shake off
Neil Nickel was coming on the outside. How about Nickel
that time with the sacks. So fourth and long and
no choice. Vicksburg in their own territory, even down twenty
(59:55):
four to three, are gonna have to punt the football away?
Speaker 4 (59:57):
Yeah, they're really like you said, there really isn't a
choice here, and they'll punt it in it some way somehow.
Speaker 3 (01:00:04):
They got to stop Unity. I tell you what.
Speaker 2 (01:00:06):
Unity Christian has done a nice job. They bent a
little bit with the passing game. But when they need
to come up with a play boy, they do a
great job. Don't they dial it up?
Speaker 3 (01:00:13):
On defense? They do buyer to kick it away.
Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
Trying to flip the field here, takes his time, takes
a look end over him, but high kick, gonna hit
at the twenty six, kind of does a web shot
right there, then bounces out of bounds inside the twenty five.
But not bad fields is free day Christian. They'll take
over first and ten from their own twenty four is
their bad field position for that?
Speaker 3 (01:00:38):
I know. Just you're gonna add to their stats right now?
Is what happens? Is Kentwood, by the.
Speaker 2 (01:00:42):
Way, checking the big board here down eight to nothing
to have power?
Speaker 3 (01:00:45):
That is Detroit Catholic Central.
Speaker 2 (01:00:46):
How about twenty eight to seven orchs of Lake Saint
Mary's over Ported Central, Notre Dame Prep.
Speaker 3 (01:00:51):
Who's the only lost for you today? Christian?
Speaker 2 (01:00:52):
Up fourteen to nothing over Monroe Jefferson West Cathay get
a dogfight with Okaha heights only six nothing there.
Speaker 3 (01:00:59):
And don't count out Notre Dame Prep.
Speaker 4 (01:01:01):
I know a lot of people thought that the winner
the Catholic Central West Catholic that was for the state title.
I think you're finding that out today that might not
be the case.
Speaker 3 (01:01:08):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 2 (01:01:09):
Craig Tibby was very impressed with them, and he told
me that going in that he knew it was gonna
be a tough game for them, but a great game
for them preparation wise. First down and ten handoff student potty,
Right boy, look at a guy's job by the d
N though, penalty flag coming out at the end of.
Speaker 3 (01:01:24):
This till we get a face mask. We'll have to
sort it out on the carry with Jared Devrie on
the other.
Speaker 2 (01:01:32):
And they only gave about a half yard gate if that,
but then a penalty if in Houghton playing d end
out there need a great job for Vicksburg. Yeah, he
held it because everybody was coming his way. He held
out the fords. Okay, wow, it's gonna go against Vicksburg.
You can have if people are wanting to block below
(01:01:54):
the waist on defense, well what has all for safety?
Speaker 3 (01:01:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:01:57):
Well what happens is you need Christians run two lead
backs or a pulling guard in their come. You cannot
take the lead blockers out at the knees protect kids.
And that's why that rules there. And sometimes when you're
a dB and you're coming up and that guy's bigger
than you, your instinct is a go low yep.
Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
And if people are wondering why do that? You just
want to create a pile. You're trying to create something
that they have to run around and just kind of
take yourself out of the play. First down and ten,
that's Defray over the left side. Look at the bodies
piling up that time. Devray running upright and hard across
the forty five close to that first don Mark is
going to be a couple of yards short at the
forty seven, but a nice pick up there after the
(01:02:37):
penalty on first and ten, second and two coming up
for you.
Speaker 4 (01:02:40):
See, I will say this, hats off to Vicksburg. Those
kids up front are playing hard. There was a lot
of contact there. There was some big bangs that you'd
like to hear as a football coach, and it's Vicksburg
delivering those. They're trying, they're fighting, They're given effort. That's
all you can ask.
Speaker 2 (01:02:55):
But you talked about it, you see. It's got to
feel good about this first half. They're right on schedule,
doing what they want to do. Dictating tempo. Six point
thirty three left to go yep, and the full back
on the quick hit of that time across midfield stripe
and into Vicksburg territory the first down all the way
down to the forty three yard line. Nice carried by
Josh Bramer. We mentioned he also will catch the ball
(01:03:17):
out of the back. He's got two receiving touchdowns.
Speaker 4 (01:03:20):
But well, right now, the dive is there. If we
had stats on that thing, that three quarters of the
yards have been just a simple quick dive. It hits quick,
it's fast. You've got linebacker's eyes worried about pullers and
they're doing a great job.
Speaker 3 (01:03:35):
Again, Scores and Moore coming up in a half time.
Speaker 2 (01:03:37):
As we reached the halfway point of the second quarter,
taking down under six minutes left to go, twenty four
to three, Unity Christian or Vicksburg Crusaders. With the football
in that time, Elliott nowhere to go. He was hit
and dropped immediately. Nice played defensively that time by Braylan
for Lear six and seventy five pounds, senior linebacker for
the Bulldogs.
Speaker 4 (01:03:55):
Yeah, and they took on the trap block really well.
Try to kick out the end didn't happen. Linebacker Phil's
great play.
Speaker 2 (01:04:05):
So now right now for Vicksburg, right, if you're Tom Marquise,
are you thinking let's try to win this second quarter? Right,
Let's try to get some momentum back before halftime because things.
Speaker 3 (01:04:14):
That didn't go the way the first quarter. But I mean,
you're still in this football.
Speaker 2 (01:04:17):
Game, right, you need to stop and you need some
positive plays and hopefully you get a score. Double tight
end set, tight splits on the offensive line, straight t formation,
counter disrection, right side breaks it tackle. That's been the
story in this ballgame. And dragging another would be tacking
for extra audits inside the thirty five all the way
down to the thirty That time tough running again by
(01:04:37):
Levi Buller. Well, I know you grew up in Rockford, right,
and Ralph for a long time ran fullhouse tea.
Speaker 4 (01:04:43):
It's an IF and then offense. So the guys upstairs
here are key coaches to the play call. They're watching
what are they taking away? Because if you take something away,
you're giving something else. And that's what Unity's doing.
Speaker 2 (01:04:56):
And for those people when we're saying about Unite Christians
doing what they want to do.
Speaker 3 (01:04:59):
First we've talked about the.
Speaker 2 (01:05:03):
Running game, and you want to have a variety jack
porting of that time with the dive over the right side,
not much yardage to the twenty nine game of two.
Speaker 3 (01:05:12):
But to your point, coach, it's.
Speaker 2 (01:05:14):
Different guys different looks, different skill sets, and you get
certain guys to the outside, they're gonna be gone, like
we saw on some of those big runners.
Speaker 4 (01:05:21):
Well, they've got three excellent running backs and their leading rusher.
Speaker 3 (01:05:25):
Is their quarterbacks exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:05:27):
And it by the way, it might be about time
for one. I was gonna say, keeps right here. He
hasn't had to do much today in the running game.
Hand but dive in the middle and there it is
again lowered his shoulder and inside the twenty. It's gonna
be first down and ten. At the seventeen yard line
that's Bramer, yep, and first and ten.
Speaker 4 (01:05:47):
You see, and I at this point you're seeing what
is the answer? Like, yeah, I assume what Vicksburg's doing
is is their middle linebacker has both a gaps. But
the problem is if the tight end or tackle get
off clean, they're blocking.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
Him hand off now left half coming up the middle,
spinning out of a tackle.
Speaker 3 (01:06:09):
Inside the ten.
Speaker 2 (01:06:10):
A lot of times they don't know who's the football
because he's behind offensive line and the other running backs.
And on the carry that time was number twenty three.
That's Levi, Buller.
Speaker 4 (01:06:21):
And Bosma been in there on the offensive line for
Unity doing a great job pulling that time. He actually
went straight ahead, got on the linebacker for the quick
dive and safety had Mike tackle.
Speaker 2 (01:06:33):
Taking a lot of time with this drive too. They've
had some quick scoring drives with this one methodical three
point thirty and taking left to go up twenty four
to three. Phoebus under center, quick dive again inside the five.
Speaker 3 (01:06:45):
Touchdown taking it in. Who else Josh Bramer?
Speaker 4 (01:06:49):
And you know what any Christian unsung hero is the
Bosma kid. That time it was actually a trap, not
a straight dive. He's playing right guard, kicks out on
the left side.
Speaker 3 (01:06:59):
Touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
Bramer's second rushing touchdown of the afternoon for Unity. Christian
two point conversion up coming as a increased their lead
thirty to three now for Vicksburg with three twenty six
left to go first half.
Speaker 4 (01:07:12):
I am more more impressed with Unity as they watch again.
I saw them play last week, super impressed against a
one lost big Rapids team. Yeah, and again scored fifty
plus points six times. They've done that. They're on their
way to number seven, trying to five.
Speaker 3 (01:07:30):
They're not work for the first time.
Speaker 2 (01:07:32):
Nice job Vicksburg stopping them at the one for Unity Christian.
They tried to sneak it in there with a quick
hitter Bramer again and so no good on that two
point conversion. And with three twenty six left to go
first half here in Caledonia, our score Unity Christian thirty
Vicksburg three.
Speaker 3 (01:07:51):
You're listening to the.
Speaker 2 (01:07:51):
Drive to Ford Field presented by Vandalian Home Improvement here
on ninety six to one the game.
Speaker 3 (01:08:36):
Red Mcinna tips four back. You're rumby Myers Memorial.
Speaker 2 (01:08:38):
Stadium in Caledonia for this Division four semi finals. So
two touchdowns on the board in the opening quarter. It
was sixteen to three Uni Christian. Two more in this
quarter and they've blown this one wide open. With three
twenty six left to go, coach thirty to three. As
Phoebus approaches, this one's gonna get a little more air underneath.
It hits inside the twenty right, it's a free football
on the kickoff. Feel that after one hop at the fifteen,
(01:09:00):
across the twenty, fighting out to the twenty five yard
line on the return. That time for Vicksburg was number
twenty one. Quincy Schwartz key stat for you. First down
so far you Undy Christian sixteen Vicksburg four. Wow, And
like I said, credit the Unity Christian defense as much
as the offense here. But Josh Bramer with a couple
(01:09:21):
of rushing touchdowns of nineteen and seven. Justin Phoebus, Jared Davrees.
All the weapons are working for coach Tibby the Crusaders
this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (01:09:30):
Coach, there they are right now. Vicksburg just needs to
have fun playing football. Yeah, make some place.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
First down and ten handoff new back in the backfield
from left to right. There you go to Molten and
that's Eroaldo Mendoza. They're back up five to six, one
sixty five at a senior. Nice job staying at his
feet across the thirty good gain out to the thirty
three yard yep, second and two now for Vicksburg.
Speaker 4 (01:09:56):
A lot of leg drive in there. That was a
big pile and he just kept moving it.
Speaker 2 (01:10:00):
Amazing victory at Portland last Saturday afternoon forty two forty
one on the very last play of the game for
Vicksburg giving their head coach Tom Marcase in his eighteenth season,
is one hundredth victory as head coach of the Bulldogs
and their first regional championship. Now they tried again nothing
doing great job defensively looking up front, making the stop
(01:10:21):
there for unity. Christian Hudson Dirks was in there in
big number ninety two, make that eighty two. I'm sorry,
Carter Skulton. The defensive end. They need to throw some hitches,
some bubbles. Just get it to some athletes in space
and see what they can get. Right now, one of
our great sponsors, we saw some tail getting out there, Coach.
Speaker 3 (01:10:39):
We were coming in.
Speaker 2 (01:10:39):
Win Shueler's cheese spreads Michigan tradition. You can't go wrong
with any Win Shoela's four tasty chief spread flavors. You'll
find them in their dairy section of your favorite grocery store.
Wins shuelersch spreads third and two trips to the right.
One receiver left looking to us right, fires complate on
his man Hastetler. One of his favorite targets, number ten,
just shy of the forty, but enough for a first
down to move the chains for Vicksburg first and ten Bulldogs.
Speaker 3 (01:11:03):
Just a short hitch.
Speaker 4 (01:11:04):
He ended up coming back trying to break the tackle,
lost about four after the catch, but he does get
the first down, and.
Speaker 2 (01:11:11):
Right now, that's a big positive for Vicksburg. You don't
want to give the ball back to eveny Christian. Here
before the half, two wide receivers to the left.
Speaker 3 (01:11:20):
One to the right.
Speaker 2 (01:11:21):
They have the wing back stacked to the right side,
one back in the backfield of fake to him. Moten
now gonna step up. He's got some running room and
gets across the thirty five and out to about the
thirty eight to thirty nine yard line.
Speaker 3 (01:11:34):
For the junior quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:11:36):
So give him three second and seven clock continues to
wind though.
Speaker 4 (01:11:40):
Vicksburgh's got an injured player. Quick story on the hosteler kid.
I remember when he was born because his dad worked
for me at North Point Where Christian at the time.
His mom's last name is gears Oh Yes had two
brothers that played at South Christian, OK. One of them
was part of a state championship team in the early
two thousand.
Speaker 2 (01:11:58):
And By the way, where Craig Tibbis from his helma
mater South Christian and some of his staff coming over
from the Sailors when he started the program at Unity Christian.
Injured player that is down in good news is he's
walking up off of his own power, limping a little bit. Yeah,
that's Bryce Johnson, the junior offensive lineman YA six three
two fifteen. Get another one of those great juniors. Look
(01:12:21):
out for Vicksburg next year. Coaching the Wolverine Conference.
Speaker 3 (01:12:24):
Yeah for sure.
Speaker 4 (01:12:24):
And like Dave Groen, this whole playoff run and uh,
don't count him out here. You know, I know the
scores lopsided, but they can make a few plays. Get
back in this thing.
Speaker 2 (01:12:34):
Two wide receivers left, one to the right. Mote wants
to go to the year again. They come back with
a bubble screen, got some room across the midfield stripe,
hurtling over defender and into Unity Christian territory. There's your guy,
Johnny on the spots. Travis Hotsteler first and ten Vicksburg.
Speaker 3 (01:12:49):
So what I say, I said, they need to get
some hitches and some screens.
Speaker 4 (01:12:52):
They've done both the last two plays and they've got
fifteen yards.
Speaker 2 (01:12:55):
Nice pick up there of forty excuse me, of seventeen
yards first and ten. Moten going over the top again
taking a shot got him man out there.
Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
Oh he had his hands on.
Speaker 2 (01:13:07):
It, got deflected maybe a little bit, or just got
blocked by when he was looking back the hand that
came in front in completed to ten McGuire bowles. Yep,
that's the second time he's had a shot. But coming
over there and kind of distract him a little bit
was Josh Bramer, the junior defensive back deep in coverage
that time, kind of swiped his hand. I don't think
(01:13:29):
he got a piece of the ball, but just enough
to the interaction. Yup, throw it off as far as
bulls tried to haul that one in. Good throw by Moten,
by the way, second down and ten trips to the left,
one receiver right from the right hash Moten sets fires,
got his man complete at the thirty three fighting for extriotits.
He's got a first down. Good tough run after the
catch inside the thirty to twenty eight guests who Hossettler again.
Speaker 4 (01:13:51):
Yep, he runs in so he's on the loan receiver
side there and trips left. He's the loan receiver on
the right and he runs an out route away from
the defender.
Speaker 3 (01:14:00):
Eight throw to the outside shoulder. Moten's got an arm, oh,
no doubt about it. He's mobile enough.
Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
I'm not impressed with like his speed when he goes
and runs, but he's enough where he can need shifty
and get away from the pass rush to give himself
a couple extra seconds. Hand off now over the right side,
bounce to the outside inside the twenty, nice cutback down
to the sixteen yard line. Again, it's a rolldo Mendoza
and he's got a first and ten freshoon of downs
for Vicksburg. And they got to hurry up a little
(01:14:28):
bit here though.
Speaker 4 (01:14:29):
They're down to thirty six seconds left.
Speaker 3 (01:14:32):
Yeah, one thing is happening out there. You need a Christian.
Speaker 4 (01:14:34):
Went to a three man front there and two linebackers,
so there's five in the box. As a play caller,
you're like, we need to be able to run the ball.
If you're only putting five in the box. I get
they need to score quick. They also need first downs.
Great call there. Now they got to get the ball
in the end zone.
Speaker 2 (01:14:49):
Only the first time out taken by Vicksburg. So they
have two more all three for Craig Tibby and Unity Christian.
Thirty six seconds left to go, first half, first down
and ten after the run by Mendoza in the red
zone here at the sixteen yard line, and you need
Christian if you just tune in it with the Crusaders
sixteen to three. After the opening quarter, Vicksburg managing to
get a thirty two yard field goal from their great
(01:15:11):
kicker Mitchell Bayer to make it sixteen to three. But
then it's been back to back scores. They missed out
of the last two point conversion. For you need Christian
the second quarter to lead this one thirty to three.
So any type of points here, they're in field goal range,
but any type of points would be big for Vicksburg
before the half. Well you say any type. They need
to touchdown, Yeah, I don't they need a touchdown with
it being you know, thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:15:34):
To three right now, they've got to get a TD
and you know, like you said, they do have two timeouts.
Speaker 3 (01:15:42):
They're going empty this time.
Speaker 4 (01:15:44):
They got trips left, they got a wing back, nobody
else in the backfield.
Speaker 2 (01:15:47):
Anthony Mark Case is in there as an h back
to the left side, trip side of the field to
the white sap and the right hash now faken designed
quarterback run.
Speaker 3 (01:15:56):
He ran right into the defenders that he's not going
to go anywhere.
Speaker 2 (01:15:59):
No, it's it was like a zone slice concept with
the kickout coming from your eah back.
Speaker 3 (01:16:05):
But there was they didn't win the block.
Speaker 2 (01:16:08):
No Levi offering it was not going to be blocked.
Number fifty three right there.
Speaker 3 (01:16:12):
Again.
Speaker 2 (01:16:12):
After a short game, they'll give him forward progress inside
the fifteen to the fourteen. Vicksburg gonna take another time out.
He with twenty three seconds remaining, we'll keep it right here.
Speaker 4 (01:16:21):
Now if they've got a pop pass out of that
look so it looks like quarterback keep you remember Tim
Tebow right to some of that pass. Yeah, well it
looks like he's gonna run and then he pops up
and hits the receiver.
Speaker 2 (01:16:32):
Don't forget if you want to tune in for the
conclusion over on one oh seven mus the Moose. That's
one oh seven point nine FM. Jason Hunton and Tom
Kendra up at Cadillac High School. They had a noon kickoff,
so they're into the second half in that Division six
battle going on between Kent City and Kingsley. Last check,
it was Kingsley just won scored in that game on
a pick six to lead Kent City, who was a
(01:16:54):
perfect twelve and er coming in Joe will have scores
and more from all of our area team coming up
in the hole. Jepson Physical Therapy halftime show at the break.
Speaker 4 (01:17:05):
And they were playing a neutral site, so you don't
worry about goalposts.
Speaker 3 (01:17:08):
That's right, right? Oh man? That story was crazy, wasn't it?
If you missed it?
Speaker 2 (01:17:12):
Kingsley had college goal post, which who wouldn't take those?
Speaker 3 (01:17:16):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:17:16):
But they are narrower, they are put it in yin fact,
and Travis City Saint Francis had a problem with it,
so they had to dig them out the day before basically,
and all they did is tick the wrath out on
Travis a Sint Francis.
Speaker 3 (01:17:27):
In that home. Oh man, it was not pretty from
the right ash.
Speaker 2 (01:17:32):
Here we go, second and eight from inside the fifteenth
to fourteen constant Hostetler. Elliott went for the knockaway or
even the picking about the two yard line, a little
comeback on the sideline, Molten throw a strike Hostitler made.
Speaker 3 (01:17:48):
The Cats turned it into the end zone. Six points
for the bulldog.
Speaker 4 (01:17:52):
I tell kids all the time, when you run a
curl on the outside, turned to the outside and step back.
He stepped back, got the football, beat the defenders turned outside.
Nobody there into the ends.
Speaker 2 (01:18:02):
And if he doesn't coach, that probably gets either intercepted
or deflect exactly exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:18:07):
Great job by the receiver.
Speaker 2 (01:18:10):
And now it'll be up to Mitchell Bayer to try
to tack on the extra points. So thirty to nine
now Vicksburg, with eighteen seconds left to go. Byer tried
to make it a twenty point contest. Snap is to
go and hold his down. Kick is on the way,
plenty of leg from Bayer. It is up and it
is good. So it's unique Christian now thirty Vicksburg, ten
(01:18:32):
eighteen seconds left to go. First half will step aside
and come back with more. As you're listening to this
Division four semi final on this beautiful, beautiful Saturday afternoon
here on ninety six to one the game, Travis Hosteler
his twelfth receiving touchdown of the season from fourteen yards.
(01:18:56):
He curled at the two, then took it in off
the arm of Eastern Molten. Tack on the extra point
by this guy, Mitchell Byer set to kick off, and
with eighteen seconds left to go, it's thirty to ten.
You're today Christian Vicksburg and Byer a gonna drive this
one into the back of the end zone.
Speaker 4 (01:19:11):
All right, I'm telling you, I know he's headed to Western. Yeah,
he's doing the Pat mcafeel celebration there. But I'm telling
you right now that kick and kick in college. Oh absolutely,
So if he's playing baseball Western Michigan, yeah, they may
want to talk to h Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:19:25):
By the way, how about the Broncos first place at
the Mid American Conference just down the road. And yeah,
I'm sure that maybe Lance Taylor's had a conversation with
that young especially if his dad pitched at Western too.
But Mitchell Bayer fun to watch today. So out of
the back of the end zone, Christian will take over.
They've got all three timeouts, eighteen seconds left in this half,
up thirty to ten. Will they try anything here first
(01:19:47):
and ten from the twenty And I say that they
don't really have to because their plays can go for
big plays right well, and they get the ball to
start second d right, Okay, yeah, so that's part of
the thinking here is we know we get the football
in the second half. By the way, Joe rt will
have a final from Cadillac High in that Division six game.
If you're wondering coming up at the break, and now
Craig Tibby gonna take it.
Speaker 4 (01:20:06):
It's interesting that they would be in a situation called
time out. They must have maybe had something called and.
Speaker 3 (01:20:14):
Yeah, yep.
Speaker 2 (01:20:16):
If you're Craig right here though, and you've been in
this situation, you know, do you are you?
Speaker 3 (01:20:22):
Well? Actually I've never been up thirty in a state
semi final game. But are you fearful of being like
too cute? Right?
Speaker 2 (01:20:29):
Like you're just like be satisfied with Hey, you're up twenty? Yeah, yeah, yeah, Well,
I mean that's what's going through say, because they get
the ball, first run a play, get the locker room,
come out too.
Speaker 3 (01:20:39):
I mean they haven't been stopped yet today.
Speaker 2 (01:20:41):
Right, And that'll be the big story in the second
half coming up. We mentioned the whole Jepson Physical Therapy
halftime show. Once we're done, we'll wrap things up with
a discount door postgame show. Could to have coach Swore
along because we're gonna put him to work. He's gonna
have to select our uptown chiefskate offensive player of the
game coming up. Garrett'sppliance dependable the game. I'll take care
of the Montel construction defense. And I tell you, if
(01:21:03):
the second half is like the first half, coach, you've
got your work cut off for.
Speaker 3 (01:21:05):
There's a lot of guys that.
Speaker 2 (01:21:06):
Are well, I do and I think we I think
I know who it would be right now, but we'll see.
Speaker 3 (01:21:11):
First down and ten. Here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:21:13):
They're gonna keep it with a fullback dive which has
been effective and across the twenty five out to the
thirty yard line before he stopped there on the carry
that time, Bramer was Josh Bramber, who's had two rushing
touchdowns already this first half.
Speaker 3 (01:21:28):
I was gonna say he might be the guy right now.
Speaker 2 (01:21:30):
Yeah, number thirty five has had a whale of a day.
Now if we remove on dig deep, Okay, their offensive line, yes,
it's done. Great job, and let's give them while we
have a time out here a little kudos. Hunter Camps.
We talked about how big he is. The right tackle
number sixty eight, left tackle pretty good as well, Jackson Brinks.
Then you've got the left guard, Max Barriker right side
(01:21:50):
le by offering who's the All region in Division four,
and then Nelson egabein their center number fifty one and coach.
The reason I say that is because you know how
how important the guards are.
Speaker 4 (01:22:01):
Point offense, and they've had Bosma in there quite a
bit at right guard yep, and giving Afringa who plays
a lot of defense a break, so they've they've been
able to rotate. And I tell you what I envy
bringing in a backup guard who's doing the job that
he's doing.
Speaker 2 (01:22:19):
Yeah, Briiler Bosma. Well, the one thing it's intering. We
talked to coach Tibby, Like I said, they've got thirty
two varsity players. That's pretty unique. That's a pretty high
number for them. As he talks to kids about, hey,
I know you want to play running back hand off
now Devray over the left side, or a kid might
want to play wide receiver, but if he's got enough
size and speed, he's like, okay, how would you like
to start at guard for me?
Speaker 3 (01:22:39):
Exactly?
Speaker 2 (01:22:40):
And it's funny how that whole mentality has changed for
Unity Christian is Now they'll just be content to run
out the clock. Speaking of Craig, Timmy is Crusader's got
it rolling again after one half of player this Division
four semi final, trying to get back to Ford Field.
Speaker 3 (01:22:55):
It's Unity Christian thirty Vicksburgh ten. Stay with us.
Speaker 2 (01:22:59):
We'll go back to this studio with Joe Arett and
also a special interview I got a chance to tape
this week with Matt Cook from LMCU talking about the
Hutt Scholarship and also the final count in case you
missed it, for another successful season of the Touchdowns for
Kids campaign that's coming up. We continue on the Whole
Steps and Physical Therapy halftime show after this. As you're
listening to the Drive to Ford Field presented by vandal
(01:23:21):
On Home Improvement here on ninety six to one the game,
welcome back into the Whole Steps and Physical Therapy halftime
show and join us right now as special guest. You've
heard him throughout the years on our broadcast and we're
so excited to announce he's going to announce a big
number with our Touchdowns for Kids campaign. He is Matt Cook,
(01:23:44):
our friend from LMCU, Vice president of Community Relations, and
Matt exciting season again for high school football and we're
not done with some ARIA teams still trying to get
to Ford Field.
Speaker 3 (01:23:52):
Yeah. What a season.
Speaker 8 (01:23:53):
And you know, congratulations to all those athletes, you know,
some of those athletes and the teams that have finished
their season already, you know, but also we've got these
teams that are still competing and hopefully bringing a championship
back here to the West Side.
Speaker 2 (01:24:06):
All right, I don't want to take away your thunder.
We had nine weeks, we had a lot of touchdowns scored,
people were found along each week. What did our final
total end up for year four of the Touchdowns for
Kids to benefit Kids Food Basket.
Speaker 8 (01:24:19):
Yeah, and kudos to those athletes catching those touchdown passes,
running in getting those touchdowns on the field. We are
really excited to announce that our number this year for
lmcu's donation to Kids Food Baskets for Touchdowns for Kids
is six thousand, two hundred and fifty dollars. You know, love,
(01:24:40):
what a total and that makes twenty five thousand dollars
given to Kids Food Basket over the four years of
Touchdowns for Kids here in partnership with iHeartMedia, LMCU and
Kids Food Basket.
Speaker 2 (01:24:52):
Thank you so much, TELMCU. We couldn't do it without
them and their donation. I know, hand in hand if
you went out to some of our games at the
stadiums saw LMCU representatives, you saw Kids Food Basket representatives.
The need is bigger than ever right now. And I
know we say that every year, but there are still
schools that are waiting on their list that could benefit
from this, So thank you West Michigan High school football fans.
(01:25:13):
And the good news is, Matt, we get to do
it again at about a month when we kick off
the Baskets.
Speaker 8 (01:25:17):
For Kids, right we do, and you know, and again
this is all about those high school athletes and the
performances that they get to put on on the court
and on the field, and so Baskets for Kids is
the extension of what we did and when we introduce
touchdowns for kids and being able to see the success.
And the really cool part is and I really appreciate you,
Brett and recognizing, you know, the growth of women's sports
(01:25:39):
and being able to you know, be able to broadcast
both girls and boys basketball throughout the winter, and so
really excited for the kickoff of their season. Is they
you know, just are completing tryouts here and being able
to start their games in the next week or two.
Speaker 3 (01:25:53):
So really excited for that.
Speaker 2 (01:25:55):
And for fans out there or groups listening, you want
to bring your church or a student led group, they
can donate. That's the other part in this. I want
to make sure a know at Kids Food Basket dot
Org their time with volunteerism, and I know LMCU is
big with that. Go to LMCU dot org to find
out what they're doing in the community or to get
into something that's big for high school seniors. In just
(01:26:15):
a minute, but kids Food Basket dot org and Matt again,
thank you so much again. Matt Cook, LMSU vice President
Community Relations, join us now. With that said, there's also
something that's near and dear to you guys that I've
been a part of since we've been in partnership, and
that is the Hut Scholarship. And there's different dates as
far as making sure you get your essay in.
Speaker 3 (01:26:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:26:35):
So for those out there that don't know, LMSU was
founded by a Grand Rapids Public schools teacher over ninety
years ago, and so in honor of him, you know,
we introduced our board of directors introduced a scholarship program,
and like Brett said, high school seniors. So those that
are currently high school seniors that are going to be
pursuing some fortum of higher education that could be a
(01:26:56):
trade school, could be going to Grand Rapids Community College
or another local college or university. But there's a chance
for you to win one of twenty two thousand dollars scholarships,
and all that the students have to do to be
considered for this is write an essay. Our essay topic
this year is how do you stay authentic to yourself
and your values in today's fast paced world where so
(01:27:19):
much takes place online.
Speaker 2 (01:27:21):
How about these numbers, by the way, six hundred and
twenty thousand dollars in scholarships given away since this started,
three hundred and fifty two deserving students. I love being
a part of the lunching where they honor those students.
Now with your brand going across in Florida, in Michigan,
the east side of the state, the west side of
the state, and I want to invite you to throw
out there how people can find out more about this.
(01:27:42):
You mentioned elms dot org, but a lot of I
know schools locally you're working with counselors English classes and
this is kind.
Speaker 3 (01:27:49):
Of part of their program.
Speaker 8 (01:27:50):
It is indeed, and you know that's the thing here
is there's a pretty low barrier to entry. It is
just an essay, and so a lot of our school
partners will assign that.
Speaker 9 (01:27:58):
So if you're a.
Speaker 8 (01:27:59):
Teacher and you we have high school seniors and maybe
it's English, maybe it's another class. We'd love for you
to introduce this as an optional essay topic. But again
I read that topic a second ago. But if you
go to LMSU dot org backslash hut you can find
all the details on that. But all of our local
schools have been mailed information and also emailed information from
our team locally to be able to give those resources.
(01:28:21):
So if you have a student, send them to your
their guidance office. But again you can find that info
on LMSU dot org backslash hut. But we're really excited
to see those essays again this year. And the deadline
this year is December fifteen, so that's different from previous years.
So if you had a senior before, it is different
this year. But December fifteen is when those essays.
Speaker 2 (01:28:40):
Are due again. LMSU dot org great resource for all that. Matt,
thank you for joining us and taking the time today.
Really appreciate it. Excited about that number. Can't wait for
baskets for kids and for you and all of your
staff at LMSCU. Happy holidays from us.
Speaker 3 (01:28:53):
Thank you, Sam, to you.
Speaker 7 (01:28:54):
Brett, all right, thank you, Joe.
Speaker 2 (01:29:18):
Appreciate that the whole Jepson Physical Therapy halftime show being
brought to you by host JEPS of Physical Therapy, so
many locations across West Michigan to serve you, and they
want everyone to stand the game, no matter if you're
a weekend Warrior adult or if you're a high school
athlete like we're seeing playing in front of us in
this semi final game in football, and they get patients
in within twenty four to forty eight hours, Host JEPS
of Physical Therapy Restoring Body, reviving spirit. Well here our
(01:29:41):
score thirty to ten. You Undy Christian had the breakover
Vicksburg and this Division four semi final the winner will
head to the Division four state championship game. Remember it's
split this year. Games with even number divisions are Friday.
Then the odd numbers are going to be Sunday because
Michigan State's playing Maryland at Ford Field on Saturday night.
After the Lions play, of course on Thursday in their
(01:30:02):
traditional Thanksgiving game. So coach, as we welcome you back
in thanks for joining us again. But I know you've
got some interesting first half individual numbers and that when
they kind of tell the story. But Unity Christian, like
we said, they got started the way they wanted to,
and they didn't vary from the script too often as
far as Craig Tippy was concerned. To have this twenty
point lead, No they didn't.
Speaker 4 (01:30:23):
So they had the ball five times, scored four right,
and got three of the two pointers.
Speaker 3 (01:30:29):
It started with Bremer, who's.
Speaker 4 (01:30:30):
Had really nice first half, a couple of touchdowns, five
plays seventy two yard drive, Phoebus then on a keeper
that drive three plays eighty four yards. So time of
possession for the first drive was a minute twenty for
the second drive fifty four seconds. Unity doesn't worry about
time of possession, let's just face it. Then Devrees capped
off a nine play forty nine yard drive that took
(01:30:53):
four to seventeen, and then Bremer again seven yard touchdown
round capping an eight play seventy six yard drive where
they took three fifty four off the clock. As for Vicksburg,
they did get the field goal thirty two yards from
Bayer and then they had a touchdown pass to Hotsteller
(01:31:14):
and that was a nine play seventy five yard drive
that got them on the scoreboard late. Now, the only
time Unity was stopped when the clock ran out at
the end of the first half. That's that's the you know,
the big thing for them we talk about are they
doing what they want to do?
Speaker 3 (01:31:29):
Are they able to do everything they need to do? Yes,
for sure.
Speaker 4 (01:31:32):
As far as first downs go seventeen for Unity Christian,
nine for Vicksburg yards rushing, two hundred and fifty four
in the first half for the Crusaders, forty for Vicksburg
passing yards. They haven't had throw pass other than the
two pointer. Ninety five yards passing for Vicksburg, So a
total of one hundred and thirty five yards and two
(01:31:54):
fifty four for the Crusaders.
Speaker 2 (01:31:57):
So there's your first half stats and you're scoring. Summer
will get to that. Josh Bremmer, of course the big
story there two rushing touchdowns nineteen and seven yards to
kind of lead the way. But justin Phoebus with the
rushing touchdown, jaredy Freeze, everybody getting into the acting yep,
and that starting backfield for Unity Christian, which is again
one of the reasons they're so tough to stop. You
don't know who's got the football and then you kind
of try to tackle them, and I think the number
(01:32:18):
of mistackles credit to the Unity Christian running backs was
stiff arms and just tough running has been a story
too against that Vicksburg.
Speaker 4 (01:32:24):
Defense, especially on the outside runs. They here's the stiff arm,
really nice, put the ball on the outside arm. Keep
it safe. That's why they don't turn it off over
very often, right, and they make it difficult to tackle.
Speaker 3 (01:32:34):
So there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:32:35):
First half stats and scoring summary brought to you by
MKD Funeral Homes. Every story, every moment, every day since
nineteen thirty seven through four generations. That respective family tradition
continues at MKD Funeral Homes by creating distinctive celebrations of
life at the greatest possible value.
Speaker 3 (01:32:50):
You can find out more at any one of their.
Speaker 2 (01:32:52):
Locations, or just go to Mkdfuneralhome dot com. That's MKD
Funeral Home dot Com. That leads us into as both
teams are warming up our second half kickoff here, coach Swore, what.
Speaker 3 (01:33:04):
Do you think? And let's start with Vicksburg first.
Speaker 2 (01:33:06):
I mean they were effective throwing the football. I know
they kind of have to now, but when you look
at that last scoring drive for them, it was big
throwing the football. And trust your junior quarterback Easton Moten.
Speaker 4 (01:33:16):
Yeah, and so Here's here's the deal. UN's gonna play
a little softer. So the hitches are there, outside screens
are there, they run those. Those are a part of
their offense. I think they just need to go fast,
be able to do that, get some positive yards, get
it going. But here's the most important thing. They kick
off to Unedy Christians to start the second half. If
they have any chance in this football game, they've got
(01:33:37):
to get a stop on defense and get good field
position so that they can get back in the football game.
Speaker 2 (01:33:42):
Unity Christian trying to make their third appearance at Ford Field.
They've won a Division five state championship under credit Tibby.
They've gotten to the Division four state title game, and
they lost in that crazy game to Chelsea back in
twenty twenty one. They'd love to get there again in
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (01:34:00):
Yeah, that was like what was the final score that
it was in the fifties both ways, like Chelsea had
the amazing comeback.
Speaker 3 (01:34:06):
Looked like Unity had it won fifty five fifty two. Yeah,
there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:34:12):
And in twenty eighteen, like I mentioned, Isaac Deslan, now
playing with the Lions, of course, went to Hillsdale, then
onto Arkansas and his career before he got drafted. He
was a part of that twelve and two team. In
twenty eighteen, they beat Portland, speaking of kind of the
six degrees of separation here, forty two to seven in
that Division five state championship game. Since that time, both
(01:34:33):
Union Christian and Portland have moved up a division to
Division four.
Speaker 4 (01:34:37):
Yeah, and that's what I love about the MHSAA. You know,
we had sixty three teams changed divisions because they want
to continue to have matchups in the playoffs. That makes
sense based on enrollment and things, and so I appreciate
that a lot. Mark Yule was here for a little
bit and I think I heard he's headed to Greenville now.
Speaker 2 (01:34:56):
Yeah, he's checking all these semi final sites. And again,
un if you're wondered about them. At eleven and won
their lone loss to Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, who, by
the way, is playing today in a Division five semi
final game. They averaged forty two points per game, giving
up just seventeen points, so they're kind of on pace
for that. But they've scored over fifty points six times
(01:35:18):
in those twelve games on their way to number seven today.
So I mean, this is an impressive you to Christian team.
And I think what's most impressive. You heard it when
we talked to Craig Tibby in our Coaches Corner segment
of the pre game show. They lost a tremendous senior
class and a lot of starters and two way starters
off that team a year ago.
Speaker 4 (01:35:33):
Well that's what I remember. Talking to people early in
the year. They said, oh, yeah, you need to Christians
is not gonna be as good this year.
Speaker 3 (01:35:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:35:39):
Well, I hate to tell you that might have been wishful.
Thank you for people to have to play them, because
I hate to tell you they are just as good,
if not better. Here comes the kickoff. Yep, gion sidekick.
They've already done it once, I don't think so, just
to give your defense a chance. But we will see.
By the way, on that note, with the conference re alignment,
as you know, in the Okay Conference they went to
the ok Gold which was tremendous, especially a year ago.
(01:36:01):
Union Christian went five to zero in both runs the
last two years to win conference titles.
Speaker 3 (01:36:06):
There's the on side.
Speaker 5 (01:36:06):
They got it, They got it.
Speaker 3 (01:36:08):
Got it.
Speaker 2 (01:36:09):
You call the coach Vicksburg. It hopped across the fifties.
Speaker 3 (01:36:12):
Spencer Spicer, I believe twenty four.
Speaker 2 (01:36:14):
Grab that thing that's ten yards and indeed the Bulldogs
come up with it. Spencer Spicer on the Fumber recovery.
What a kick, by the way, with a high hot
by Buyer.
Speaker 4 (01:36:25):
Perfect, I like the first one I thought I would
have on sidekicked. It's your only chance, right, your only chance,
and they got it. Great job. Now let's see what
they can do with the football. Starting at the Unity
forty nine.
Speaker 2 (01:36:36):
Really surprised that Uni Christian a little bit caught off guard.
There was a great kick by Buyer, but you gotta
be thinking what you just did right coming out of
the locker room.
Speaker 4 (01:36:44):
Right, and you don't want to have to stop him
on defense. Now you can score and get a little
momentum short field two first and ten.
Speaker 2 (01:36:51):
They start this drive after the on side kick successful
Vicksburg from the Uni Christian forty nine.
Speaker 3 (01:36:55):
They're gonna take a shot right over the top man.
Oh no. A great job by Hostetler. He played defender
as a receiver.
Speaker 2 (01:37:03):
Because that ball was picked, it was underthrown and Vanderswag
was there.
Speaker 3 (01:37:06):
Yes, and Hosteler pulled it out and almost caught it. Yeah,
on the back side of that ball pin loose. I'm
impressed with that kid, and he's only a junior.
Speaker 2 (01:37:15):
And there's really not any wind here. We're down in
the bowl to speak of, so that one just kind
of hung up. It was underthrown by Molten. Vanderswag was
in perfect position to pick it off. But like you said, Hosteler,
playing defensive back instead of wide receiver saves the possession
here for Vicksburg.
Speaker 3 (01:37:30):
Second down and ten, two wide receivers each way.
Speaker 2 (01:37:33):
Hand off now to the back to the right of Molten,
and that's Kaiser over the left side trying to turn
the edge right in front of the sideline for Vicksburg
and somewhat successful to the forty five.
Speaker 3 (01:37:46):
Give him four, third.
Speaker 4 (01:37:47):
And six outside zone play which they like to mix
with their play action game. So they got trips now
to the wide side as they wait for the call
from the sideline.
Speaker 2 (01:37:57):
By the way, Vanderswig three interception since coach coming into
this game, so he was looking for number four. Great
job by Hostelller third and six claps his hand, takes
his snap, Molten swings out bubble scream.
Speaker 3 (01:38:08):
Hosteler going back to the middlefield.
Speaker 2 (01:38:10):
He's gonna go all the way across Tom again, he's
got blockers, he's got room.
Speaker 3 (01:38:13):
What a run.
Speaker 2 (01:38:13):
He's got the first down, lower the shoulder at the
thirty nine.
Speaker 3 (01:38:17):
They're gonna give it to him. Coach.
Speaker 2 (01:38:18):
That's a oh no, oh no, oh no, yes, good
job kid, because nothing indicated he should be going all
the way across the field till he got to the
other side. And those are the effort players if you're
Vicksburg that keep the momentum rolling right for sure, keep
them believe alive. First in ten he got it just
by about half the link of the football. Great effort
by Travis Ostetler.
Speaker 4 (01:38:39):
Well any other thing. You're having fun playing football, no
matter what the score is. And that goes a long way.
Speaker 3 (01:38:44):
They go.
Speaker 2 (01:38:44):
Bunch trips, coach to the right side of the field.
Work for the left, Tash, what do I receive her
that way? Handoff to Kaiser on the delay. Urney Christian
was waiting for him at the thirty nine.
Speaker 3 (01:38:53):
No gain.
Speaker 2 (01:38:53):
First guy there, big number seven coming up off that pile.
That's Jonathan Hucker, the senior defensive end.
Speaker 4 (01:38:59):
Yeah, bunch trips, and I think they wanted to run
power away from it because they attracted three defenders to
get him out of there.
Speaker 2 (01:39:08):
Keep an eye a number eighty. He's been quiet too.
Graham Kubiak, a big wide receiver. He's in the slot here.
Two high safeties, Johnson split out wide left, the h
back kais of the back to the left of Moten.
On second and ten, spins of football wants to air
it out over the top of Gavin and threw it
into double coverage, coming over and almost picking that off under.
Speaker 3 (01:39:29):
Again and really could have been picked.
Speaker 2 (01:39:31):
Yeah, I mean Bremer was there, the senior linebacker, excuse me,
junior linebacker who they've actually dropped back more into coverage.
Speaker 4 (01:39:40):
Yeah, so they've started to go two high safeties, but
because they know Vicksburg is gonna throw it more.
Speaker 3 (01:39:46):
So third and ten after the incompletion.
Speaker 2 (01:39:49):
Notice the bunch look draws a little bit different look
from the defense. Rammer comes over, Phoebus on the other side,
three wide receivers to the right. On third and ten,
they want to go back to the left bubble scream block,
kickout and inside the thirty five about three yards short
of that first down marker that was McGuire Bulls on
the catch.
Speaker 3 (01:40:09):
They run bubble as well as anybody else I've seen
this year. They did. It's really good and I would
not get away from it.
Speaker 2 (01:40:16):
So fourth and three, coach, they got to get inside
the thirty to the Unity Christian twenty nine to pick
up this first down.
Speaker 4 (01:40:23):
What's interesting, they run bubble to the loan receiver side.
They get the running back and that tackle on that
side out.
Speaker 3 (01:40:28):
Blocking for it.
Speaker 2 (01:40:29):
Fourth and three though Unity Christian defense trying to get
a stop, trips to the right. They work in the left,
hash pressure on the back side. Looked out, won't gonna
run and will he get the hicky guy I think
with his six foot three frame he was hitting about
the thirty, fell forward close and they're gonna give him.
Speaker 3 (01:40:43):
A first down.
Speaker 2 (01:40:45):
Wow yep, tremendous hit coming up by the linebacker. But
credit moten falling forward to pick up that first down.
Speaker 4 (01:40:52):
And as they work into the red zone, so probably
about nine more yards, they'll start to see more man
coverage by.
Speaker 2 (01:40:58):
Unity nine and taken to going to the third quarter,
thirty to ten, Unity Christian leads it over Vicksburg, but
the Bulldogs come out. They get an on side kick
to start the second half and are now moving the football.
Speaker 3 (01:41:10):
In Crusader territory.
Speaker 2 (01:41:12):
Two wide receivers the right, Johnson the h back stack
to the right, no one in the backfield.
Speaker 3 (01:41:16):
They'll go two wide receivers left, high snap.
Speaker 2 (01:41:19):
Nice job by Moton to control it, sets his feet,
fires towards the near sideline. Again a fifty to fifty
ball in Bremer. The safety knocks it away. Intended receiver
was Graham Koobi At Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:41:29):
I'd like to see a little deeper corner out. That
problem is you gotta get the football to him right.
Speaker 2 (01:41:34):
Well, how big is Premmer been on this trive with
a couple of knockaways almost the interception as well. Don't
forget going back by vanderswag running back did a great
job picking up the blitzer on that last play. By
the way, Vicksburg has a Roaldo Mendoza in there in
the backfield to the right of Moten.
Speaker 3 (01:41:52):
He'll get the handoff now on the delay.
Speaker 2 (01:41:54):
Nice job of running north and south and he gets
just inside the twenty five el Marcus Ford progress short
of the twenty.
Speaker 3 (01:42:02):
Four come back with the bubble screen. Now give him
four third and six.
Speaker 2 (01:42:09):
And they've got bulls by himself to the short side
of the field.
Speaker 3 (01:42:12):
That's who they ran it to last time. Coach, Yeah,
they do.
Speaker 4 (01:42:15):
Now the other play that could be there's a little
bubble and go pump it.
Speaker 2 (01:42:20):
John Deep stacked over the tight end right side for
the wide side of the field. Mote takes a snapperl
into his right, try to set his feet and now
gonna cut back.
Speaker 3 (01:42:28):
No one was inside the twenty. Nice kickout block inside
the fifteen.
Speaker 2 (01:42:32):
That was Hostiler coming back to help his quarterback and
he got him inside the fifteen to the fourteen yard line.
Speaker 3 (01:42:38):
First in ten Bulldogs. That kid Hosteler is just a
football player.
Speaker 2 (01:42:42):
He is what a block there to get at least
three or four more yards for Molten.
Speaker 4 (01:42:47):
And I think it was a designed pass and then
he looked up and saw But again, when you get
to the red zone and they're playing man, they turn
their backs on the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:42:56):
This is when Vicksburg is at their best. You've called
it coached all afternoon long, eight point thirty left to go,
third quarter, Bulldog's on the move, hand off, Mendoza on
the delay. Nothing doing good job of the Unity Christian defense.
They'll stack them up for a short gain when the
first guy's over there was Jared Divrees.
Speaker 4 (01:43:13):
What we haven't seen is play action with a slant
on the trips side. Interesting, they've got Hostetler part of
what would be the trips if they move their h backs.
Let's see what they do here looking at the sideline
waiting for the play, and they're gonna stand in what
we would call dubs.
Speaker 3 (01:43:29):
Two receivers each side, running back in the backfield.
Speaker 2 (01:43:32):
Trying to make it a two score game with a touchdown.
Here two Wade receivere Way mendoz on the delay, trying
to get to the outside, breaks the tackle down inside
the ten, fight into the nine yard line. They'll say
his knee was down at the ten. DeVries on the
tackle again the linebacker. He's head into a double digit day.
And that's what they love to do. Funnel it towards
number twenty four.
Speaker 4 (01:43:53):
So now they're going trips to the wide side with
Johnson the big guy out here as the inside slot.
Speaker 2 (01:44:00):
Five, seven, two fiftieth. There's not a better definition of
a bowling ball. I don't know what is Third and
six from the unity Christian Ted from the left, hash
Mendozah to the left of Molten.
Speaker 3 (01:44:11):
Molten sets fires swing out to the right.
Speaker 2 (01:44:13):
Kubiak has it inside the ted good open field tackle
down to the seven yard land. They'll mark him on
the stop for unity Christian. That time they can't get
by Buller.
Speaker 4 (01:44:23):
It can't get a first down at the five now, Brett,
so it's two yards to go.
Speaker 2 (01:44:30):
Kubiak on the catch. Now they move eighty to the
far side of the field. They're calling it, coach, about
fourth and three. Two and a half, Yeah, two and
a half. We'll go with tight trips to the left,
Mendoza to the right of Moten out of the pistol
formation from the right. Hasse takes the snap, looking right,
single coverage over everything, two wide, Oh, Betley fly come late,
(01:44:52):
little bit. Hostelar got grabbed, He got grab yep. Vanderschwag
gonna be the guilty party.
Speaker 3 (01:44:58):
Yep? Is there, say to Jersey, good piece of officiating. Yep.
By the wait, Coach, correct.
Speaker 2 (01:45:04):
Me if I'm wrong. Once they get to this run
of the playoffs, they have extra officials too, well, they
have seven officials.
Speaker 4 (01:45:10):
They make sure they have seven in every game because
there are occasions, especially in the lower divisions, where you
might have a five man crew.
Speaker 2 (01:45:16):
Yeah, so those extra guys seeing everything in the secondary
like they saw there right on top of it was
the official no hesitation to flag. So that's going to
be first in goal after the hold or pass interference
call against Unity Christian. And they'll spot it at the
three yard line, six thirty eight left to go.
Speaker 3 (01:45:35):
Third quarter. They like to ten Unity Christians.
Speaker 2 (01:45:37):
They like bubble to the lone receiver side hostelers out
here on our right, Moten handoff Mendoze up the middle,
touchdown Vicksburg from three yards out o Roaldo Mendoza the
senior five six one sixty five. And that makes it
a thirty to sixteen ballgames.
Speaker 4 (01:45:53):
So how about the on side kick? Yep, a chance
to not have to stop them on defense. Get back
in the game. Now you a little energy, Hey, it's
a two score game. That was big coach, you were
all over it.
Speaker 2 (01:46:07):
And they'll try the extra point kicking attempt like they've
done with Mitch Bayer. Remember has a thirty two yard
field goal already this afternoon out of the holds of
Donnie Ann's six to one senior snap is a go
and hold. His down kick is on the way, plady
leg boy. He gets it up in a hurry and
(01:46:28):
it is good. Six point thirty five left to go
on this Division four semi final in the third at Caledonia.
Our score Unity Christian thirty Vicksburg seventeen. Back with more
as you're listening to the drive to Ford Field presented
by Vandalin Home Improvement here d ninety six to one
the game.
Speaker 3 (01:47:00):
Mhm h.
Speaker 7 (01:47:37):
M.
Speaker 2 (01:47:47):
All right, thank you for that rapid radio scoreboard update.
It might be Unity Christian and West Catholic as far
as every teams, everyone else having a tough road by Vicksburg.
This one fielded and all over it with two guys.
Was Unity Christian coming up with the recovery that time?
Johnny on the spot was Jared Debries, and he made
sure and got ahead of the I mean, if they
(01:48:08):
touch it doesn't matter anyways, but ahead of the fifty
yard line at the forty nine at Vicksburg's where Union
Christian will start this drive.
Speaker 4 (01:48:13):
Coach, Yeah, maybe surprisingly on side kick there, but hey,
you know what, they're doing everything they can to be
in this football game.
Speaker 2 (01:48:21):
Thirty to seventeen. Now just a two score game, thirteen
point lead for the Crusaders, and this is just the
first time they've touched it offensively in the second half.
Speaker 3 (01:48:31):
Yeah, we're halfway through the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:48:34):
Vicksburg kind of turning the tables on Utie Christian. They
like to do that to other people with long drives,
especially when they're in the lead like this.
Speaker 3 (01:48:42):
They'll take the quick hitters too.
Speaker 2 (01:48:43):
First down in ten hand off right side, breaking a tackle,
got some running.
Speaker 3 (01:48:48):
I'm got enough for a first time.
Speaker 2 (01:48:49):
It looks like inside the forty running hard to the
thirty eight yard line. Good blocking on the edge in
a great run there by Jared debrees the.
Speaker 4 (01:48:56):
Old thirty six power. Okay, if you played in the
wing team at Rockford, right, you probably ran it.
Speaker 3 (01:49:03):
Nice run there.
Speaker 2 (01:49:04):
Gate of twelve first and ten u se quickly up
over the football double tight ends said full back dive.
That was so successful in that first half. Good job
by Johnson and company to stack him after a short game.
Did get three. I'm the carry four Unity Christian was
Josh Bremer, who's got two rushing touchdowns already this afternoon.
After a big game last week against Big Rapids in
(01:49:25):
the regional final. Phoebus from the right hash under center
takes his snaphand off. Elliott wants to go wide nearside
has some lead blockers, but he's out running them inside
the thirty and dragged down at about the twenty eight
yard line. Still an effective run on the stop that
time was Graham Kubiak playing both ways for Vicksburg.
Speaker 3 (01:49:47):
They're giving him first down.
Speaker 2 (01:49:50):
La just kind of outran everybody, his blockers, the defense
on the corner.
Speaker 3 (01:49:53):
Well, and he's a big guy to tackle. Yeah, he
is a load.
Speaker 2 (01:49:57):
Got those Neon green shoes, so you know when he's
got fall number two. And this is the thing that's
just kind of demoralizing when you play a team like
Uni Christian. Everything's gone right for Vicksburg up into this
pot the second half, but if they punch it in here, yep,
we're right back to square one. Phoebus under center, straight
t formation, handoff Elliott from right to left, breaking tackles,
still on his feet inside the twenty five ford progress.
(01:50:19):
They're going to give him the twenty two coach, So
it's gonna be a gain of six second and four.
That's the other thing that weighs on you as a
defensive player. When you're out there, you think you have
them maybe stopped, and all of a sudden, the chains
are in their favor right down in distance. Well, and
you mentioned if they score, well, if they score and
go for two, they actually have increased their look by
one since half time. That's a frustrating that's crazy, absolutely crazy.
(01:50:42):
Phoebus under center hasn't had to do as much today
as running backs have been effective along that offensive line.
Handoff again, this time to freeze over that right side.
Better job by the Vicksburg defense, Anthony Martin case the
coach's son. Nice job at d end over there, Yeah,
only one on the game. There so a key third down.
It is four down territory for Unity Christian. But can
(01:51:03):
they try to get in their favor for the Bulldogs
trying to get a stop four fifty seven and taking
left to go in the third thirty to seventeen. Unity
Christian over Vicksburg. They let it thirty to ten at
the break the third quarter. Being brought to you by
our friends at Kids Food Basket. We'll tell you about
the total we raised this year with our Touchdowns for
Kids campaign with LMCU. After this play, play for Phoebus
(01:51:25):
keeping himself around the corner inside the twenty cuts back.
It's on the fifteen ten five makes a man miss touchdown.
Speaker 3 (01:51:31):
What a run, Justin Phoebus. It's like they've been saving
that play.
Speaker 2 (01:51:35):
Brett Oh, you know it can go big anytime, and
they hadn't run it more than twice. He's a shifty
running back, so he really is. They're leading rushers. You
mentioned coach coming in, and he made it a great
cutback at the five. There were two other defenders there after.
He got outside, made a cutback head one blocker and
puts it in the end zone. And here they go
go for two.
Speaker 4 (01:51:57):
And like you said, as much as Vicksburg did everything right,
they could be down by one more point than they
were at halftime.
Speaker 2 (01:52:03):
Sixteen rushing touchdowns for Phoebus coming in add two more
today one of twenty that one of twenty one yards
with a two point conversion upcoming. You look at his
numbers as he pitches it to Elliott, Elliot wants to
go wide, cuts back and walks into the end zone
Lucas Elliott for the two point conversion. But you look
at the numbers, how balanced is this? Justin Phoebus has
(01:52:24):
thrown eighteen touchdown passes.
Speaker 3 (01:52:26):
Has just one two point conversion through the air today.
Speaker 2 (01:52:28):
Now is rushed for eighteen touchdowns for thirty six on
the season.
Speaker 3 (01:52:32):
Go right Yeah. You talked about the guy that makes
the engine go right. Yeah. He just makes all of
it happen.
Speaker 4 (01:52:39):
Great decision maker when they need him to be today
they haven't had, you know, he hasn't had to make
a lot of tough decisions. I think that's the only
third quarterback keep he's run. But how effective was it?
Speaker 2 (01:52:52):
Touchdown set up the touchdown two point conversion by Elliot.
Speaker 3 (01:52:55):
We'll keep it right here and I mentioned that number.
Speaker 2 (01:52:58):
We are so happy with all the touchdowns in both
our Lakeshore Game of the Week and right here on
ninety six to one the game. Through the regular season
of nine weeks. We raised through an LMC donation of
fifty dollars per touchdown, six thousand, two hundred and fifty
dollars to benefit Kids Food Basket, a proud sponsor of
the high school football Game of the Week again this
year in the drive to Ford Field, nourishing local kids
(01:53:19):
to reach their full potential. That's what it's all about
with our friends at Kids Food Basket. Coach, you got
a score update, yeah, or to your Lake Saint Mary
over portyge Central forty two to seven.
Speaker 3 (01:53:28):
That is a fine wow.
Speaker 2 (01:53:29):
And they are the defending champs. Of course, beat Byron's
Center last year. Yep, we covered that game here on
ninety six to one. The game Phoebus to kick it off,
low line driving kick angling towards the far sideline, taking
on the fly of the ten stays and bounds across
the twenty, coming back to the middlefield across the thirty.
Tell you the return team for Vicksburg's done a nice
job today and a nice return at that time again
(01:53:50):
by Quincy Schwartz. He's got some speeding, can scoot out
across the thirty. They'll mark them down at the thirty four.
Speaker 4 (01:53:55):
Well, they had some fun this last drive. Did what
they'd like to do all season long. They're gonna come
back do it again. See now they have to get
back into the game after thinking they were back into
the game.
Speaker 2 (01:54:06):
Thirty eight seventeen, first in ten Vicksburg four twenty six
left to go in the third quarter. Glad to have
you long on my final Saturday here on your home
for the NHSA Football Playoffs. Naughty six Toy won the
game Easton Moltin the junior back to work for the
Bulldogs two wide receivers each way wants to throw out
of the pistol.
Speaker 3 (01:54:24):
Now where to go to his riik at attucket and
run left.
Speaker 2 (01:54:26):
Flushed out of the pocket, it is going to be
dropped for a loss back at the thirty yard line.
Great job by Jonathan Yucker, the senior defensive end to
drop him. They'll save forward progress to the thirty one.
Speaker 4 (01:54:36):
Needs to tuck that ball away just a little bit.
I was worried he was gonna lose that and fumble.
So loss of five and not exactly what they wanted.
Loss of four brings up second down.
Speaker 2 (01:54:47):
Yeah, second and thirteen coming in. They'll actually give them
the thirty one. So a loss of three on the
sack by Uker, like you mentioned, coach, I mean just
showing three down linemen right now, expecting the short I
mean respecting the passing game. Well, they know that if
they don't give up the big play, it's a lot
harder for Vicksburg to come back. And these guys have
been getting pretty good pressure. Now they might send like
they come to a guy on the outside handoff underneath
(01:55:10):
a Mendoza was run well here in the second half,
and he's got a nice pick up across the thirty
five out to the thirty eight yard line.
Speaker 4 (01:55:18):
If they get any positive yardage, they'll probably go forward on.
Speaker 2 (01:55:22):
Fourth gain of seven on the run by Mendoza. Keeps
the clock winding though, under four minutes left to go
big third down here, third and six for this unity
Christian defense.
Speaker 3 (01:55:36):
Vicksburg can go ultra fast. They have not today. They're
going to look at the defense making the play call they.
Speaker 2 (01:55:41):
Like from their own thirty eight. Molten claps his hand,
takes a snap from center pump fake running back to.
Speaker 3 (01:55:47):
His right, throws it. Oh almost intercepted.
Speaker 2 (01:55:50):
Vanderswag was sitting on that one, trying to go back
to Hostetler, and he's lucky he didn't get that one
picked off.
Speaker 4 (01:55:56):
He is he had the running back wide open coming
out to the f and chose to go to Hosteller
and they did not get positive yards.
Speaker 3 (01:56:06):
They will punt or I will say that cat's a
good athlete. Yeah, and he's our backup quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:56:12):
Keep that in mind with buyer coach Mark case Thy
going to send out the punt team.
Speaker 3 (01:56:16):
They are in this trip's formation.
Speaker 2 (01:56:20):
Gotta start thinking about right as a coach. Number of
possessions that you're gonna get the ball right. Because Unity
Christian if they don't score, he usually takes a lot
of time. Buyer now takes his snap, rolls to his right,
kicks away high end over end kick. Oh, bobbled by Phoebus,
went to the turf, but he hopped on it quickly
at the thirty yard line.
Speaker 3 (01:56:38):
First mistake kids made all day. And he still covered
the ball exactly. He had the fair catch on it.
Speaker 2 (01:56:42):
Was a good kick by Buyer because the punt team
was down there.
Speaker 3 (01:56:47):
What I did see is that if he tucked it
and run it, I think he might have got the
first down. You think he chose to punt yep first
out of ten? He was taking a look.
Speaker 2 (01:56:55):
He took his time, kind of Australian style, rolling out
to the right. Clocke continues to wind here. First down
and ten, three minutes left to go, third quarter, thirty
eight seventeen. Unity Christian in this Division four semi final
over Cinderella Story Vicksburg. Who's playing their best football right now?
That's what you want to be. At eight and four,
(01:57:15):
they finished in third place folks in the Wolverine Conference
behind Niles and Paupaul, who are both out of the
playoffs at this point. First down and ten, they show
five down linemen stack in the box, hand off left
side Elliott and look at Elliott. Just when they think
they've got to contain, he still gets more than five
yards across the thirty five out to the thirty seven.
Speaker 4 (01:57:34):
I tell you you like to talk to running backs
about he fall forward. That's an extra yard or two
every single play. That's the other thing Unity does. Yeah,
so they get tackled, they're falling forward, always positive yards.
Speaker 3 (01:57:46):
Always.
Speaker 2 (01:57:48):
Brayln Valier, the outside linebacker of the near side, kind
of took the bront of that for Eliot. He hit
him about three yards before he actually was brought down.
They always have big running backs too, right, biggest statument's strong.
Remember the Chandler Twins in that run when they lost
to Chelsea in twenty twenty one.
Speaker 3 (01:58:06):
They were so tough.
Speaker 2 (01:58:08):
Second down and short'll give a quick dive and short
of the first down they'll stop them on the tackle
was big number seventy two, Luke Deal. We talked about
the All Region player six four two fifty five, the
big deal. Yeah, exactly at the thirty nine. So here
we go, coach. All these third downs are big trying
to get stops for Vicksburg. Third and one at the
(01:58:30):
Uni Christian thirty nine yard line for the Crusaders offense.
Speaker 4 (01:58:33):
Yeah, and the problem is when you're on defense, you
almost have to guess right because you're not getting the
push up front on the line of scrimmage, and you
need He's got so many options here.
Speaker 2 (01:58:47):
They got Deal on this right side, big nose over
the center, handoff, the great job. They ran right towards Deal.
Surprised by that great job they got a push. Deal
was leading the way and he might have lost yardage
about a foot. It's gonna be fourth and a long
yard coming up for you.
Speaker 3 (01:59:06):
See what do you do here? If you're Craig Tibby, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:59:09):
I mean just here's still in control of the football game.
I think he'll punt. Remember his quarterback is the punter.
So see what go all out run blitz in all
the gaps. If you're a Vicksburg he got well see
what they show you here they if they show you
they're running offense, Yeah, you've got to I think they are.
Speaker 2 (01:59:29):
This is where the tight end right, Keep an eye
on the tight end pop the tight end if you're
a defensive.
Speaker 4 (01:59:33):
End, absolutely, so they're gonna go up there quick. Maybe
they're trying to get him to jump. Then they drop
back to punt.
Speaker 2 (01:59:38):
Tight end sid comes and off Elliott left side, got it.
Got it great blocking too. And you know who helped
lead the way that time, fellow running back Josh Bremmer.
Yea over that left side is Elliott takes it out
to the forty five fresh to the downs first and
ten Unity Christians.
Speaker 4 (01:59:54):
But that's what they do. They don't have to pull
a guard every time to get power. They lead with
two running backs, give it to the backside, and here
they come.
Speaker 2 (02:00:02):
So if you can envision this for our listening audience
or straight t if you're running to the left side,
but you give it to the right half back and
you have those two guys that's going right to Coach's point,
it's like pulling the guard.
Speaker 4 (02:00:11):
Right right up, right up into sea gap and then
tight end gets a.
Speaker 2 (02:00:15):
Kick first down in ten. Clock continues to wind.
Speaker 3 (02:00:22):
They're resetting the play clock.
Speaker 2 (02:00:25):
To twenty five.
Speaker 3 (02:00:30):
Yeah, they could take their time here.
Speaker 2 (02:00:32):
Yeah, and that's what they're yelling at in the press
box a week.
Speaker 3 (02:00:37):
Oh oh, there's a what do we have? There was
a fumble, but they're blowing it dead.
Speaker 2 (02:00:44):
I think they're wondering the clock. Should the clock be
running or not? They had the play clock. You have
the play clock, and you also have the game clock. Okay, yep,
so the game clock. That's what I was wondering about
because it wasn't on the same as the play clock.
So first down and ten. While we have a moment,
let's quickly go back to Joe Aaron. He's got a
(02:01:04):
rapid radio scoreboard update. What do you have for us, Joe?
Speaker 3 (02:01:06):
Real quick?
Speaker 9 (02:01:07):
On the other side of this bracket, guys, we have
a good one going on.
Speaker 3 (02:01:10):
As good Rich just.
Speaker 9 (02:01:11):
Gets on the board and for two to go in
the fourth quarter, dearborn divine child leading Goodrich ten to seven.
Speaker 3 (02:01:18):
Oh good one. There, you're absolutely right.
Speaker 2 (02:01:19):
First down and ten as we try to get all
the clock issues squared.
Speaker 3 (02:01:24):
Away, and I think now they realize they got everything set. Yeah,
they can just run out the quarter, right, So that's
what they're gonna do. I think that's what they intended
to get. Yeah, they wanted to make.
Speaker 2 (02:01:35):
Sure, hey, as we head to the fourth quarter, don't
forget it's our wing dosy fan of the game. You
want to score the best chicken wings in West Michigan.
Get a twenty five dollars gift card. We'll do that
coming up early in this quarter. Three quarters in the
books in this Division four semi final. Out after three
here at Caledonia. Our score Unity Christian thirty eight Vicksburg seventeen.
Speaker 3 (02:01:55):
Back with mores.
Speaker 2 (02:01:56):
You're listening to the Drive to Ford Field presented by
Vandalid Home Improvement in lat Him see you here on
ninety six to one the game. He should switch sides
and ends to the field as we start the fourth
quarter and heavy dose on the ground. Bremer gets to
(02:02:18):
carry on first and tent Ain't it just one good
jump of the Vicksburg defense. Second and nine now coming
up for uce Phoebus has to play now under center.
They want to roll again, hand off right side, finding
a crease. He's got a first down in the Vicksburg territory,
running hard inside the forty five down to the.
Speaker 3 (02:02:35):
Forty three yard lines. You're in the freeze again. I
tell you what.
Speaker 2 (02:02:38):
The seniors having a day coach.
Speaker 3 (02:02:40):
He is now.
Speaker 4 (02:02:41):
He had a day last week that was very memorable.
You know today it's been Bremmer a little bit more.
But that's the great thing, exactly, it doesn't have to
be one guy.
Speaker 2 (02:02:53):
What a luxury to have for Craig Tivvy. And that's
just the way that he goes about with his offense.
Finds big horses that can run, and they're great at
eating the clock when they want to tell and that's
what they're doing right now.
Speaker 4 (02:03:04):
Just take the time, yeap, watching that clock. Phoebus comes
the sideline for every play.
Speaker 2 (02:03:10):
Play clock down to five, but he's under center, ready
to go ten forty three and ticking left to go
this time Elliott from right to left with those two
lead blockers trying to get the edge. Now the rugby scrub.
Look at them go inside the thirty five. They went
for an extra seven yards there down to the thirty
one yard line, sustaining their blocks.
Speaker 3 (02:03:27):
Coaches love to see that first and ten unity Christian.
Speaker 4 (02:03:30):
And that's where you get mental momentum. Yeah, all right,
in confidence, wearing them down and your old lines like
tos do it again.
Speaker 3 (02:03:37):
Let's do it again. Exactly, they're asking for it. Let's
do it again.
Speaker 2 (02:03:40):
By the way, set your redouls right now. We'll tell
you when we take the cue to call at six one, six,
four five, four thirty seven seventy six. If you want
to be our Wing Doozy fan of the game on
this semi final Saturday, if you've won already this year,
not eligible, but a twenty five dollars gift card to
Wing Doozy on the line, get that number to set
your redout. Six one, six, four five four thirty seven
seventy six. Justin Phoebus in company left hash hand off,
(02:04:02):
they keep it on the ground again and a quick
dive play inside the thirty down to the twenty seven
yard line. That is Bremmer, who's had a day.
Speaker 4 (02:04:12):
Every kid out there the place quarterback, no know what
I mean? He did the guitar pos after the handoff,
right yep. Aaron Rodgers made it famous and they all
like to recreate it.
Speaker 2 (02:04:21):
Now under ten minutes are only left to go. You know,
Christian is going to wind this clock. Our wing Doozy
fan of the game coming up. Brought to you by
Wing Toozy, our fourth quarter sponsor named the best chicken
wings in West Michigan. And hold those fries are so good.
Sounds good right now? Order online dine in take out
check out there Kaden in Menory two wing Doozy with

(02:04:43):
off Chicago Drive. You Christian fans know all about that
second and six hand off. Good job on the penetration
that time. Get in the backfield to stop around the ankle.
Dylan van Ekulum.
Speaker 3 (02:04:54):
Tried to run power, but Vicksburg did a good job
at taking it away.
Speaker 2 (02:04:57):
Yeah, to freeze on to carry that time. So now
with a stop basically of no gain, third and six
coming up, might have lost your yard for Unity Christian
nine two and ticking left to go in regulation thirty
eight seventeen Unity Christian trying to get back to the
Division four state title game, which will be on Friday,
(02:05:19):
an early game. They've also switched the times if you
didn't know last year, so we'll give you that in
a minute, straight t formation double tenants that mus takes
a snaphand off right side, Devrees dragging to with me tackler,
and what an effort to get the first down to
the twenty one.
Speaker 3 (02:05:34):
He was wrapped up around the twenty four coach and
that was just all jer A Dibris.
Speaker 4 (02:05:39):
It was a great effort and what do we talk
about always fall forward? Well, he fell forward in gain
three and a half yards after. I mean, guy's got
ahold of his legs and he just makes sure to stretch,
get as much as he can, moves the chains and uh,
they are on the verge of really trying to put
the nail on the coffin here.
Speaker 2 (02:05:58):
Let's say call her four right now in our audience
for the wing dousey fan of the game, color four six,
one six, four, five, four thirty seven, seventy six ready
to take your phone calls. That's caller four right now.
First down and ten phoebus quarterback keeper pushing the pile.
Speaker 4 (02:06:12):
Yeah, quarterback sneak yeah on first down and they get
what four?
Speaker 2 (02:06:17):
Yeah to the seventeen. So second and six is taking time, right,
is what coach Tibby wants to do.
Speaker 3 (02:06:24):
Right now?
Speaker 2 (02:06:24):
You can do that when you have the football. He's
got all the confidence in the world. The playbook is
wide open for you, Christian.
Speaker 3 (02:06:30):
And have they thrown a pass other than the two pointer?
Speaker 2 (02:06:32):
I don't think so, I really don't, which is amazing
you think about that.
Speaker 3 (02:06:36):
They are.
Speaker 4 (02:06:37):
They are one of the best throwing teams I've seen
in the full house tea and they don't even need it.
Speaker 2 (02:06:42):
No, and rotating a lot of backs of today as
you see coming to the sideline Bremer.
Speaker 3 (02:06:47):
Right now, they're.
Speaker 2 (02:06:48):
Rotating a new back jack Portinga with Elliott Defreese going
wide hand off. Elliott cuts back in the fifteen, inside
of ten, inside.
Speaker 3 (02:06:56):
The five down to the four yard line. Was that
Portinga on the block there? Yeah, he just came into
the game.
Speaker 4 (02:07:03):
Pullback, just comes into the game and does exactly what
he needs to.
Speaker 3 (02:07:07):
That's when you know you're building your program right.
Speaker 2 (02:07:10):
Don't forget to stay with us when we're done. Here
for the Discount Door post game show presented by Discount Door,
family owned and locally operated business right here in Grand
Rapids on West River. It's down the road from LMSU
Ballpark for over thirty years. And again that wing doosey
will take Caller four right now. That number is six
one six four five four thirty seven seventy six. Caller
(02:07:31):
four who win a twenty five dollars gift card. Six one,
six four five four thirty seven seventy six. Joared is
standing by him first and goal hand off Lucas Elliott
left side plowing his way into the end zone for
six more. Everyone's getting into the act here for unity Christian.
What a rushing attack for Coach Tippy and the Crusaders.
Speaker 3 (02:07:49):
Lucas Elliott just putting the ball the end zone.
Speaker 2 (02:07:51):
There forty four to seventeen two point conversion upcoming. Was
six fifty seven left to go on this one. Just
demoralizing drive. If you're a Vicksburg fan, there it was,
and that's.
Speaker 4 (02:08:05):
I I will be hard pressed to see somebody slow
this offense down.
Speaker 2 (02:08:11):
You know. We said that that year with the Chandler Twins.
And then remember they had a big lead against Chelsea
and it was kind of crazy. Coach felt like because
they hadn't played in a lot of four quarter games
that that one. As it got to the fourth quarter,
disadvantage Judy Christian freshman kicker out there, giving him an opportunity.
Snapers go and hold us down. Kick is up, He's
(02:08:31):
good and it's good.
Speaker 3 (02:08:33):
What about that? Yeah? He kicked? He kicked one. Last week.
I heard they he brought him in from the soccer team.
Speaker 2 (02:08:40):
Eli Dressler, the freshman getting a chance to put some
points on the board. So with six point fifty seven
left to go. We'll keep it right here. Joe is busy,
I know, taking those wing doozy phone calls.
Speaker 3 (02:08:51):
Our scoring should tell my wife to call. If nobody's
got call, you could get unity.
Speaker 2 (02:08:56):
Christian leads at forty five to seventeen over Vicksburg. And
I mentioned coach that the even numbered schools will play.
Speaker 3 (02:09:03):
It's kind of weird.
Speaker 2 (02:09:04):
On Friday and then it's Sunday the way it's split
up with that Michigan State Maryland game for the odd number.
And you can find all this information MHSA dot com.
That's MHSA dot com for when your team might player
if you want to go down one of the days.
Speaker 4 (02:09:21):
And I'm I'm gonna make a comment on behalf of
all high school football fans and coaches. Can we be
done with Michigan State playing games at Ford Field on
that weekend?
Speaker 3 (02:09:31):
Please? So this game would be twelve thirty in the afternoon.
Speaker 2 (02:09:34):
Member, it used to be Division four, Division three to
be the late games.
Speaker 3 (02:09:37):
No longer as now they kick it away.
Speaker 2 (02:09:40):
D Wrestler a nice job inside the fifteen hits it
about the twelve does touch a turf taking on one
hop Hosteler breaks and tackle up the side of that
gets tough.
Speaker 3 (02:09:48):
He is. I love him as.
Speaker 2 (02:09:49):
Far as maybe our Garretts appliance, dependable player of the
game for Vicksburg. As he steps out of bounds, but
not before he gets out across the thirty they're gonna
spot into the thirty two yard line. I know you
have a connection there. But Travis Hosteler has impressed me
for Vicksburg es.
Speaker 4 (02:10:05):
I texted his dad during the week and I said
he must have got all his talent from his mother.
Speaker 2 (02:10:11):
But if you're wondering about those game times, So Division
eight starts at nine to thirty, Division four twelve thirty,
then D six is four o'clock and D two is
seven o'clock on Friday after Thanksgiving Day, first down and
ten hand off. New back in there for Vicksburg. Great
to see for these kids to get an opportunity. New
numbers on defense for Unity too. They oh, I take
(02:10:32):
that back, it was Kaiser back in there. They had
been running Mendoza.
Speaker 3 (02:10:35):
Yeah, but they've got Unity's put some subs in on
defense a little bit. Yep.
Speaker 2 (02:10:39):
Great for these kids to get an opportunity. So Kaiser
back in there. Nice first down run out across the
forty five to the forty six. By the way, your
d one time, so i'll give you after this play
on Sunday, I see your odd number divisions under pressure.
Moton kind of swinging out there and just taken to
(02:11:00):
the ground and got rid of it.
Speaker 3 (02:11:02):
Incomplete.
Speaker 2 (02:11:03):
Carter Skulton was coming hard on the near side defensive end,
applying all kinds of pressure. So incomplete sets up second down.
So for Sunday your times, Division seven at nine thirty,
then Division three at twelve thirty, Division five, which was Catholic,
could be in that game as a four o'clock kick,
and then Division one is the late game seven o'clock,
(02:11:23):
and that is Sunday this year, November thirtieth. So second
down and ten repiceated Tim Swore live from Ralphie Myers
Memorial State. A beautiful renovation year, not quite done yet,
over six million dollars with the heated locker rooms and
beautiful concession stands upgrade. Handoff now and Kyser and look
at look at Molten getting in there trying to do
the push. That's an everybody touish push. So they did
(02:11:46):
get a couple of yards out of it, out to
the forty eight yard line, date of two. So third
down and eight for Vicksburg, clock rolling under six minutes
left to go in this one.
Speaker 4 (02:11:56):
So if I'm coach Marquis, one of the things I'm doing,
I'm thinking about we're building our program, right, you got
a lot of kids coming back. Okay, let's get positive
things happen. Let's go ahead, run our offense and try
to get the ball in the end zone again and
just have you know, all of that confidence going into offseason.
Speaker 2 (02:12:15):
Yeah, because you look at the wide receivers, the quarterback
coming back, No, they.
Speaker 3 (02:12:19):
Are I think they only graduate one lineman Jenny.
Speaker 2 (02:12:21):
Heiser's only a junior. The starting running back. Yep, Third
down and eight deep drop mote trying to set it
up to Kaiser. Oh on the screen and right there
was that Skulton again. It was Carter Scult number eighty two,
just sitting on that one little screen out to the
right flats and he was all over it.
Speaker 3 (02:12:37):
He's having a fun time out there. Oh.
Speaker 2 (02:12:40):
Loss of three yards back to the forty five. So
now fourth and eleven for Vicksburg. Last shot to truly
do anything here, because you know, once Unie Christian gets it,
they're gonna try to suck all that time away, even
though it's five minutes. You know they could do it, Coach,
We've seen it today. Now out of the pistol formation,
(02:13:01):
rolling to his left, looking combs the pressure, slings it
out there.
Speaker 3 (02:13:05):
Complete his man Koobi act.
Speaker 2 (02:13:06):
First down inside the Unity Christian forty and down to
the thirty five yard line.
Speaker 4 (02:13:12):
Off schedule. Play has to scramble. They did it. I
noticed against Portland.
Speaker 3 (02:13:16):
I watched. When I watch film, they do a good job. Scrambled. Drill,
come back, somebody come back for the football.
Speaker 2 (02:13:21):
Graham Koobeach on the catch there first and ten two
wide receivers the right, one to the left and now
pats this out.
Speaker 4 (02:13:27):
Snap was actually late. Everyone else was moving, yeah, and
the snap was late.
Speaker 2 (02:13:32):
You mentioned players rotating into that defense for you to
be Christian, they're calling out numbers, getting guys in.
Speaker 3 (02:13:38):
There, you know what.
Speaker 2 (02:13:39):
That's one thing that Craig Tibby mentioned to me, even
when they had smaller numbers than they knew to do.
Now they have to play the game a different way.
But sometimes when it gets to this point in the playoffs,
it's I think a huge advantage for them, right because
everybody knows what they need to do. Everyone can sub
in if someone needs a break. Sure, all the guys
play quality bit.
Speaker 4 (02:14:01):
Yep, as long as you've been able to build those
numbers up to where you trust the kids in the.
Speaker 2 (02:14:05):
Game and they don't get a lot of injuries. Skolton
now coming off the edge, Oh Moten, nice job stepping
up and avoiding the sack and now.
Speaker 3 (02:14:12):
Trying to get positive yardage.
Speaker 2 (02:14:14):
But two more guys there, they'll stop him for what
will be a sack back at the thirty six yard
line by a yard.
Speaker 3 (02:14:21):
I saw a great study a few years ago.
Speaker 4 (02:14:23):
You talked about the injuries the teams that play in
a wing team or multiple back offense. There are less
injuries than when you're creating space and your athletes take
a bigger hit.
Speaker 2 (02:14:32):
Makes makes a ton of sense. And the fact that
you just got multiple bodies instead of relying on one
or maybe two guys.
Speaker 3 (02:14:40):
Well, and you're usually in a big in a crowd.
Speaker 2 (02:14:42):
And it's right three point fifteen, ticking left to go
second and eleven. After the sack, they swing it out
right side. Hostetler again calling his number number ten. He's
close to that first town Marker got a nice block
on the edge, brought it underneath on one of those
bubble screens, and he's inside the twenty five to the
twenty four.
Speaker 3 (02:14:59):
Move the chase first and ten. They'd love to work
it to the boundary.
Speaker 4 (02:15:03):
In other words, the ball's on the right hash single
receiver to the right, and they worked that bubble over there.
Speaker 2 (02:15:08):
Elliott coming in with tight coverage now that way against
Hostetler Molten looking left. Gonna throw it towards the back
the end zone. Got a man out there up and
oh knocked away at the last minute. Great job. Phoebus
was over there defensively. Also number eighty Luke Vanderswag. The
intended receiver was the big h bag. That's Anthony marri
Case at six' five.
Speaker 3 (02:15:29):
And he had his hands on. It great job by the.
Speaker 4 (02:15:31):
Defenders Koobiac, yeah was open on a skinny post and
he just missed.
Speaker 3 (02:15:37):
Him he threw it to the other.
Speaker 2 (02:15:39):
Side, well you want to throw it up for a
six foot five wide. Receiver he, did but Credit phoebus And.
Vanderswag jarren it loose with a big hit in the
end zone.
Speaker 3 (02:15:49):
And we got. Timeout.
Speaker 2 (02:15:50):
Yep So VICKSBURG i think gonna take their second time
out they'll have one left three twenty seven left to go.
On this one mentioned the discount door. Postgame show it
up once we are done it in that will select

Speaker 2 (02:23:29):
Fifty, yeah they've done it six, times as we mentioned
in the twelve games coming. In they were close, Though
but boy did you see for not even really throwing
the football. Today as you alluded, To, coach the dominance
with the offensive line of that ground came led by.
