Championship weekend and we're featuring a Division five state title
heavyweight bound coming up between the twelve and one Falcons
of West Catholic from the West Side and the defending
champs the eleven and two Fighting Irish of Pontiac Notre
Dame Prep represented the East Side. Hello everyone, as along

Coming up and if you missed the finals from earlier today,
it started the day in Division seven all.

When we came in rolling back home. Monominee gets it down.
The Maroons thirty four to six over school Craft from
the Camazoo Area. And then right now we've got fifty
seven seconds ticking left to go of the Division three
state championship game below us Buck Gino, and it's been
all to winning this one.

Molt Pleasant showed a little fight here in the.

Second half, but DeWitt gonna win another state championship as
the Panthers leaded fifty four to twenty over the unbeaten
oilers of Mount Pleasant.

Yeah, two matchups that were very good coming in. We
thought that Menominee, we saw them play local teams like Shelby,
and we knew that when they beat poamo Astphilia, who
is a perennial favorite in Division seven, we thought boy
school Craft could be in for it. And the Maroons
winning their first state title since ken Hoffer retired. They

they're always here at Ford Field, this in Division seven.
So congratulations to the Maroons. And then, as you mentioned
also in this session, we have just about to wrap
it up here Rob Zeman, former Cedar Springs and Ithaca
head coach, now gets it rolling with another state title here,
So congratulations. As the clock just runs out there, as

you can hear, maybe you could held that the clock
ran out for the Panthers as they celebrate another state championship,
this time in Division three. So congratulations to coach Zimmerman
and those guys and our game. Boy, I think we've
got the best two games for last. Not to say
that the first two weren't deservedly so, but boy, we

got West Catholic and Nordame Prep. Nordaan Prep. We're gonna
go back to back West Catholic for their rivers title
since twenty twenty two, and that was actually in Division
six when they played Nigani here. But then we have
the D one finale, the showcase game cast Tech Detroit
Catholic Central. Uh, they might bring more than what Dexter brought.

Dexter brought the entire community. I'm fright they had eleven
thousand people here, Yeah, from Dexter. Because they can track
that now with electronic ticketing. Eleven thousand, we might get
double that here for that night game. But the one
at hand right here, West Catholic and Nordre Dame Prep.
We've seen West Catholic a couple of times this year.
Brett been very impressed with coach Grove squad, and after

they got past Catholic Central in that district finale, so tense,
overtime rivalry, all of that came together. They came out
on top and they've been rolling since then. Last week
playing a very good West branch Ogama Heights team and
beating them by ten up in Claire. They're ready to go.
Pontiac Nor Dame Prep is ready to go. This should

be a very good matchup.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Well, it's state pedigree as far as state championship caliber
with both these programs.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
And you look at it.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Pat Fox, if that name sounds from this guy has
been around the block in his coaching circles. It's hard
to believe it's this thirty fourth season. He played back
in the day at Frankenmuth Hide. That rings a bell.
He played for Ralph Munger, the former Rockford and New
Wago head coach. Pat now in his twelfth season at
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. They are an independent eleven and
two coming in, but they're the defending champs. And all

they did is take apart Pat's alma mater last year
in this state title game forty two to seven, and
guess what they returned that quarterback.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
He's one of the best in the state.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Sam Stowe two hundred ninety three yards in this game
a year ago and four touchdowns.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
He was only a junior.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
He's coming back and he's got eye popping numbers. Buck
Gino coming to this game. When you throw over thirty
five plus touchdowns and only three I in t's.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
You're taking care of the football.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
He'll face a good West Catholic defense today, but boy,
that secondary for the Felk.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
It's going to be tested by this guy.

Speaker 5 (05:43):
Yeah, And that's one thing we saw in the regular
season West Catholic pass defense that was slightly an issue
the game against South Christian when Austin Burgess started to
throw the football around. Zeland West we didn't see as
much because we know how they run the ball almost exclusively.
But even they were able to have some success in
the pay So I know coach Landen Grove has been
in deep preparation this entire week, and he admitted last

week he didn't give Okamaha Heights enough credit for their
speed and that game was closer than a lot of
people thought it would be.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
But now I think he learns from that and he
looks at.

Speaker 5 (06:14):
This and says, Okay, we know they're gonna come out
and throw the football.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
How do we combat that. Well, one way to do.

Speaker 5 (06:20):
It is be physical and keep the ball yourself long
time consuming drives.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
That's how I think West Cathlic can win this game.

Speaker 5 (06:27):
They have to control the clock, control the field position,
and if they can do that they can hem pndp
in and when they force him into long situations then
they can bring the house get the pressure.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Sam Stow is a great thrower, he is not a
great runner.

Speaker 5 (06:42):
He does not get out of the pocket very much,
kind of like the guy that plays here on every Sunday,
Jared Goff. He can throw the ball a mile, but
if you ask him to run, that's a problem for him.
So for Wes Cathlck, they have to get after the
quarterback and they gotta get him under pressure and have
him getting rid of the ball before he wants to,
because they have some really good receivers and of course,

being at six to five, he can see the entire
field over that defense.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
So he's got a great view. The best way to
do to disrupt that is you got to get pressure.
Over two hundred wins to his credit, fifth different school
as now the head coach here at Pontiac nota dame.
Prep for Pat Fox's twelve season, I mentioned eighty nine
wins to thirty six losses. They are the defending state champs.
Also three district crowns in that time. Kind of revitalizing

this program, if you will. And for West Kathock and
the Falcons, the coaches might change, but boy, the success
hasn't for West Catholic, two time ok White champs, running
the table since the division realignments in the Okay White.
And in his fourth season for Landing Grove, he's forty
three and seven folks coming in four conference crowns, three

district titles.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Two regional championships, and as you mentioned.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
He won a state title his very first year back
at twenty twenty two.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Now that was in Division six. He told me, and
you'll hear about it.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Coming up in an interview. They won't be Division six again.
They'll stay Division five, even if they have to move
up to play.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
This is kind of their fit. And boy, they got
that big win over Grand up as Catholic Central on
their road to ford Field to get here today.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
Well, we talked about the pedigree of scheduling. I mean,
they played a very tough non conference schedule. He saw
them play Zealand West A regional finalists. In Division three,
they played South Christian, who I know coach Danny Brown
had a tough year, but they're always well coached and
they had some dudes on both sides of the ball.
They are not afraid to schedule teams, and I think
that benefits Wes Catholic when they get into these playoff

situations simply because they're playing bigger schools and testing themselves
before they get here. And the same with Pontiac Norre
Dame Prep. They're playing guys like Gibraltar Carlson who's a
Division two player, and they're playing other teams like Jason
lub and Christy who I know they're in Division six,
but man, they're really really good. Every single year. They've

(08:52):
won four straight state titles. So that's a tough schedule
as well. And that's what you look at here is
it's not gonna be any ground for either of these teams.
And sometimes we see that when you have teams coming
from one side of the bracket, maybe they haven't played
the competition that the other side has. Well, that's not
gonna be the case here, So I expect both teams
to come out firing.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
And the one thing about West Katholic as good as
Grady Augustin is he's a very dynamic, left handed throwing
quarterback in his second year as a starter for Wes
Kathick and Landing Groves.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
They love to run the football. They got a big
offensive line.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
They're led by Jacob Timber, the birthday boy today turns eighteen.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
Boy, what a birthday present that.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Would be a state championship before he heads off to
continue his college career. He's a CMU commit and he
is a big dude. He goes about six seven and
about two hundred and fifty pounds and he's.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Gotten nastier this year in his senior season.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
But he's the guy who helps get that push because
they have not one, but two when thousand.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
Yard rushers coming in.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
Matter of fact, they're both now over eleven hundred yards
because the statistics didn't include the semi final game against
Agama Heights where they ran the football up north of
Mount Pleasant and knor Olszewsky is one guy with twelve
touchdowns on the ground. The other guy is Colin Abra
that's through twelve games. But these guys are an awesome
one two punch. And oh, by the way, they both

(10:11):
play on the defensive side of the football for the
Falcons as well.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Well.

Speaker 5 (10:13):
We did the Teeland West game, Knrae Olshefsky was held
out of the offensive side for injury precaution. Now he
did play defense that game, but is Conen abram who
was the Bellcal running back. And we didn't really notice
the difference. I mean, he did a fantastic job shouldering
the load. And when you have a one two punch
like that, I don't care what division you're in. It's
very tough to defend because it's almost like in waves

(10:35):
as Olshevsky. Once he kind of gets tired, they just
bring abraman and he's almost the same back. So that's
gonna be a strain on this Shamrock defense. And they are,
like you said, big and physical upfront. They like to
get after it. Now, jan Jujam, who was their starting
rat guard, got hurt in that Zealand West game.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
He is out for the season.

Speaker 5 (10:56):
One thing to watch as we saw in that game
when they brought in the backup who is now aj
Ebeide who is the starter today, we saw them changed
a little bit let's see how they've progressed with the
bed now in his fifth straight start, do they trust
him a little bit more than they did when they
kind of had to throw him to the wolves against
Zealand West. That's also gonna be part of the scheme.

(11:17):
And you mentioned Grady Augustin. One thing that people don't
take into account, Brett, he's a left handed quarterback.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
Well, as Landon will tell you, you gotta flip.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
Your whole playbook around because he throws to the wrong
side quote unquote, Well, you know what's really hard defending
that guy because now you gotta flip your defense around.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
So that's gonna be part of this scheme too. Short
week of prep.

Speaker 5 (11:36):
Also, with the holiday and everything else, you gotta remember, Hey,
he likes to throw to the other side. That means
we gotta switch our coverages. We gotta bringing guys at
the other side of the ball, we gotta bring pressure
from different spots. So yeah, it's all blocking and tackling.
But the x'es and o's in this game is what
I'm most interested in, Brett, because I think this is
a fantastic matchup between two very smart and well disciplined

coaches and staff.

That's gonna be a key for me to watch as well.

of course winning here last night to end their season.
We still have the Spartan head at the fifty here
at fort Field of the Lions logos in the end.
But Michigan State did get their first big ten win
thirty eight to twenty eight over Maryland here last night.
And because that was played on Saturday, they split up

the two days of championship weekend, so on Friday we
had Tom Kendra and Jason hunting down here. They called
the Dearborn Divine Child Unity Christian Game right here on
ninety six to one in the game, in case you
missed it, another tough loss for the Crusaders and Craig Tibby,
you're at Ford Fields, they lose a heartbreaker buck Gino
twenty three to twenty two. We're not going to be
allowed to cover their state finle game anymore. I mean,

(13:30):
after the Chelsea game and after the Divine Child game,
and the Craig Tibby's been like, all right, why do
you guys.

Speaker 5 (13:35):
Just do it remote or something? Because just hard luck losses.
And I mean hats off to coach Craig Tibby. I
think his coaching staff did a tremendous time, not that
they don't do it any other year, but though this
group that they had, this is probably one of the
least heralded groups that they've had as far as name recognition.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
Well, they lost such a great senior class, I mean heavy, heavy.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
City class, right, and Justin Phoebus doing a great job
as a returning starting quarterback. That's key in high school football, right,
you bring your starting quarterback back for another year. So
they were able to mesh and gel around him and
made a fantastic run. The only loss well to the
team that we see here warming up to our right,
Pontiac nor Dame Prep Shambrocks. So Unity Christian with a
great run, just happened to end in the state finals

by another heartbreaking close loss to Dearborne Devine Child. So
congratulations to the Falcons for their state championship. But boy,
you just feel for Unity Christian because the last two
times they've been here it's been heartbreak city.

Speaker 3 (14:31):
And maybe they can get back here again.

Speaker 5 (14:32):
I think they can at some point get back here
again because Craig Tivy does such a great job. But
just a tough one to lose here and by one point.
So many things that's the thing I always feel like Brett,
if you're gonna lose, lose by twenty, you don't lie kids.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
You can't go back through every play and.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
Go, oh man, you would have done that one thing.
We probably win the game. No, you've lost by twenty. Okay,
you lose by one point. It's so tough for kids
to process already because you lose, you lose your last game.
But by one point, everybody's probably riding that bus going man,
if I would have just done this, just done that.
But I think that's where coach Craig Tibby and his
staff do such a great job getting those kids together

in the community and the tightness that they have and
knowing that they gave.

Speaker 3 (15:13):
Their best effort. It was just a little bit short.

Speaker 5 (15:15):
So congratulations to coach Craig Tibby and the Crusaders and
yet another fine run representing West Michigan.

Well here in the state finals.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Well another Oka Gold Conference championship for them. Remember that's
a very deep conference.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
When they re align to the Okay Conference and they
fashed the year twelve and two.

Speaker 2 (15:30):
Look what Craig Tibby's done. Three trips to the state finals.
They've come up with one state championship, two state runner ups.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
Not bad.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
One program out there in West Michigan is saying, I'd
like to just go one time. It experienced that. So
congratulations to them. That happened on Friday. That was the
second game of the day earlier.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
How about Harvard Beach in the Thumb area, they played
some great football. They've had some heartbreak, well they win.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
Congratulations to them the championship over Hudson and d eight
thirty one to twenty in Division six. Jackson Lum and
Christie Can continues to add to their state record total
fifteen total, four straight for them. Buck Gino twenty eight
to fourteen. You watched a little bit this game, though,
and it was closer you felt, than the score twenty
eight fourteen over a Kingsley team. Remember that knocked off

an unbeaten Kent City team up in Cadillac in the
semi finals.

Speaker 6 (16:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
I liked Kingsley. I liked this matchup.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
I talked about it on the Huge Show when I appeared,
I thought that was gonna be a very good game
and no pun intended. The Stags of King Kingsley came
out a little deer in the.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
Headlights Okay, he's been waiting for that one all.

Speaker 5 (16:31):
They just it kind of felt like the moment got
to them a little bit. And Jackson Blue and Christy,
they're a veteran team coach, Herb Brogan who's been doing
it since.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
I don't know, Leather Helmets. I mean, that guy is.

Speaker 5 (16:42):
Just a superb and surreal talent at coaching high school football.
He's transcended so many eras. But I think they just
came out and they kind of got to him little bit.
It's fourteen nothing before they could even really catch their breath. Now,
they fought it all the way back fourteen fourteen. They
were actually driving to take the lead on the field goal,

(17:05):
it gets blocked. JLC goes down and scores, and that's
kind of when the air finally ed up to ten
for the Kingsley SAgs. They do give up another score
trying to pressure, trying to press and trying to get
that tying score.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
They don't succeed. They give up field.

Speaker 2 (17:19):
Position and JLC punches one in for the escalation point.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
But job well done by Kingsley.

Speaker 5 (17:24):
Like you said, they beat a very good Kent City
team in the semifinals, where we thought Kent City was
kind of a hidden jam. But then they went and
beat Belding, who we were really impressed with, and that's
when we kind of knew Zach Gropp's team was for real. Yeah,
and they got all the way to the semifinals the
first time in school history. So congratulations to Eagles for
doing that. But Boie I thought Kingsley was gonna come

ready to go. They just the lights shined a little
bit too bright at the beginning and they kind of
got caught behind the same thing, like they're probably sitting
there going, man, if we've just done something different, But
that's how it goes. You gotta come ready to play
when you get under the lights at fort Field.

Speaker 3 (18:00):
And in the final game of the night Division two
on Friday night, it was Orchill Lake Saint Mary's going
back to back.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
Congratulations to the Eaglets. They get done over the Dreadnoughts
of Dexter. You mentioned all the people coming over from
Dexter right over in the ann Arbury area. Fifty one
to fourteen to final and no surprise to you and I,
Orchid Lake Saint Mary's was the team to beat Byron Center.
We did that game a year ago. Last year, they
were so young. Remember at all the positions. They had
some young offensive linemen, young at the skill positions, young

at the quarterback position, well coached, and fifty one to
fourteen impressive.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
Orchard Lake Saint Mary's.

Speaker 5 (18:33):
Yeah, we thought Dexter was gonna have a little tough
go simply because we talked about scheduling all the time. Clearly,
Orchard Lake Saint Mary now they had a very good record,
but they play a lot of very good football teams,
bigger teams, faster teams, and they came into Division two
with playing against Dexter. Dexter's really only their only test
was Saline in Division one. That's a conference matchup for them,

(18:55):
and they lost that one by a pretty good margin.
So people looked at that matchup and said, Okay, Dexter
was is gonna have to pull some rabbits out of
hats here to keep this one close. But I will
say this, hats off to the Dreadnoughts. Their first state
title appearance in school history. I mean, shoot Brett. Ten
years ago, they've never they had never made the playoffs, right,
and now they made the semis A couple of years ago.

(19:17):
Remember they lost that tight game to Forest Hills Central
a double overtime. That was their first semifinals parents in
the snow, and then they finally make it to Ford Field,
So I you know what, I know, they lost and
it was a big margin, but hats off for that
community because I was talking to John Ross, to the
communication director for the MHSA, and you know what those
kids are gonna remember. Yeah, they might remember fifty one

to fourteen, but you know, they're really gonna remember.

They're gonna remember.

Speaker 5 (19:41):
Eleven thousand people from town, like everybody from town, like
people they didn't even know they knew from town, all
of them here to support it. It's kind of like
when Caledonia made it in Division one they played Bellville.
Everybody came and watched and it's a fantastic atmosphere. And
they're probably, you know, like I said, they're gonna remember
little bit that they lost. But I mean, just that's

what high school football, high school sports is all about.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
That's why I'm a huge proponent.

Speaker 5 (20:06):
You'll never catch me saying a bad thing about the
high school sports experience in that regard, because that's.

Speaker 3 (20:11):
What you remember.

Speaker 5 (20:12):
They're gonna be thirty thirty five working their jobs and thinking. Man,
remember the time we played at ford Field in front
of like seventeen thousand people.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
That was awesome.

Speaker 5 (20:21):
Yeah we lost, but there's nobody else around here has
had that many people watch them do something. So hands
off to the Dreadnoughts. Hopefully they get their way back
here sooner ratter than the later. And again, Coach Gonzalez
and the Eglitz, congratulations to them for their back to
back titles in Division two.

That's one of the reasons it's special to be at
ford Field for championship weekend. Know the other one, Buck
and I and Joe Aaron all had to snow blow
our driveways in about ten inches of snow back home.

Speaker 3 (20:47):
So to have the state championship game played in an
environment like.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
This indoors not only for the fans but for the
players where you can't throw out anything as far as
mother nature. I know some people that are diehards love that.
That's why they live in Green Bay. I live in
Grand Rapids, Michigan, and I think that's the other cool
experience about ford Field, not only coming down here and
playing in front of your town, but boy, I mean,
this is the best, the best this is the home
of the NFL team, the Detroit Lions.

Speaker 5 (21:12):
Well, I mean we talked about it, you know, and
people remember Isaac Dislaw. I mean he was on this
field seven years ago as a skinny kid playing quarterback
for Craig Tibby.

Speaker 3 (21:20):
That was their title against Portland and he was here Friday.

Speaker 5 (21:23):
Well watch it here Friday and Craig Tivvy's like, hey,
you got eddy eligibility left that he could like sneak
out there for a play and catch a ball like
he did quarterback looks big, yeah, but that's but that's
that's what the community is all about. You had him here,
That's what brings it together. And I think everybody high
school sports across the state, I get it special, but

I think West Michigan, especially in the football arena, Brett.
The reason that I love doing this so much is
because that community feel. Isaac Dislott didn't have to come

now just his fourth season, but in year one back
in Division six, he took West Catholic there and they
won a state championship. And he joins us right now.
Landing Grove coach, congratulations on a run. You know how
special it is to still be playing on Thanksgiving weekend?

Speaker 6 (24:14):
Yes, thank thanks for having me again. And yeah, it's
super special. And it's a you know, it really hits
you when you're out of practice and you know, on
Tuesday it was our first day back to practice. You'll
come up the semi final and so you look around
and the super practice at Grand Valley's indoor and it's
just a really grateful feeling to have. And I was
thankful to get this whole week again with our kids
and be around them for you know, one final, one
final go.

Speaker 2 (24:34):
They know about the playoff push when it comes to
the Falcons and their history of West Catholic football. But
what have you seen different in your team? We saw
you early in the season and a nice win against
South Christian. Then we saw you in week nine at
your place Zealand West, and obviously we know Zeland West
made a nice run. They ended up getting ousted in
the regional final by Lowell, a very good little team.

(24:54):
But I saw something different in that win over Zealand
West and that's obviously carried over to you guys. You
get the big victory in the district championship game at
Grand Rapids Catholic Central. So what has it been for
you to get to this point in your mind?

Speaker 6 (25:09):
Yeah, I think the biggest thing has been it's been
a start with our seniors and anytime we make a run,
as you know, like our twenty twenty two seniors when
we went and won it were fantastic, and our seniors
as you remind me a lot of them, and just
the ability to you know, continue to get better every week.
And I think that's why we and why you have
seen and why everyone else seen improvement we've made. You know,
each week, you know, it's just we went, we get
to win. It's like there's always something to get better.

(25:30):
Ass It's like when you saw using a South Christian
South Christian, you know that was a great win. Danny
Brown's always got an unbelievably talented team and world coach teams,
so beating them is always hard. But we came out
of that with a lot of things that we still
need to work on, and we've we've really done that
well each week where obviously we celebrate wins and we're
always happy to get wins, but we find something to
get better at each week, and our kids have really,
you know, bought into that and maybe even been the
ones that times to figure out what it is that

(25:51):
they need to get better at and improve at, or
they'll know immediately after the game. And it's a really
mature group in that sense where we've just gotten better
every week and we've battled through injuries, We've battled through
it city all year. Every week there's something new, and
our kids is don't flinch, and it starts with our seniors.
And I think our seniors has done a great job
of embodying what we believe as coaches and carrying that
down to the rest of the program.

Speaker 3 (26:09):
How cool was it? I love semi final Saturday almost
as much as the championship weekend, just because it's that
step to get there, right And for you, it was
kind of extra special because you're from Gladwin High School
not too far from Claire where you played, and obviously
a team you're familiar with in Augama Heights. So for
people who don't know, I had some people that came
up to me that went to your game and they're like,

(26:29):
man Ogama Heights had some good athletes and big kids.
I said, yeah, they've been producing college talent for a while.
It's a good powerhouse school. But yet you guys get
to win thirty four to twenty four. But it was
not easy, was it on Saturday? Not at all?

Speaker 6 (26:41):
I mean, that was a really good football team. And
then they even I truth be told, I understanded them
a little bit on some things in regards to their
overall athleticism. I thought they were a lot faster in
person than I thought I thought than I thought they
were from the film, And you know, the film definitely
showed their physicality, there's no doubt about that. And you know,
our kids after the game said that was the most
physical team we've all year, and it was even close.
So it's a credit to them. And they've always been good.

(27:03):
They were good when I was growing up, Like they
had Anthony's out a litle places, the Detroit Lions for
a period of time that I was going to high
school there when I was in high school, Glad and
I got the opportunity to guard that big guy in
the basketball court in the basketball court for a period
of time that year, And yeah, that wasn't super enjoyable.
But you know, they've always produced really good players. And
you know, there was a tough period of time for them,
Glad when Stanis Stirling, when they weren't in the Jackpine

(27:24):
they were in the n E MC. What kind of
they were just it was a good football, good physical football,
and that's what they've always been known for us, having big,
physical kids. But their speed really stuck stood out to me.
They were fast, they had great team speed. They did
a great job in the back end and presented a
lot of problems for us. So they're a good football team.
They took every took every every ounce of our fight
in all four quarters to get them.

Speaker 2 (27:43):
And I say that, coach, because the thing that stood
out to me against a physical Zealand West team, great
non conference ending game. I think for you guys to
get ready for the playoffs is I saw your team
become complete. And what I mean by that is balanced offense, defense,
special teams.

Speaker 3 (27:58):
Everything was kind of clicking.

Speaker 2 (27:59):
I'm assuming that that's continued obviously to beat a Catholic Central,
to beat Augama Heights, and you're going to need that
coming up in the championship game. Here two thousand yard rushers.
The offensive line has done a tremendous job. Grady Augustin
has done what you needed to do depending on the opponent.
Where do you assess that is just kind of completing
everything getting ready for maybe one of your toughest, if

(28:20):
not the toughest team that you'll play all season in
Potiact over Dame Prep.

Speaker 6 (28:24):
Yeah, I mean, I think it shows we can win
in a variety of ways, and our kids are okay
with that. I think that's probably the best thing about
our team is they're not like our kids don't care
if we score fifteen win or if we score seven
and win. Amazon As we win. And there's been games
this year where we haven't scored a lot, and there's
been games a year where we have scored a lot,
And you know, I think our kids are just willing
to adapt to what the week holds. So you know,
we knew against Okaha Heights are gonna be a grinder

(28:46):
and it was gonna be a little bit of feast
and family with how they played, and our kids were
okay with that. And sometimes you get kids who are
easily frustrated by how aren't we scoring repossession or you know,
we scored fifty points a year and twenty twenty three
or fifty points per game in twenty twenty three, Where
aren't we're doing that again? And our kids don't really
care about that. And you brought up a thousand yard rushers,
and I think it starts there with Connor and Colin,
where you know they're both over eleven hundred yards now,

(29:06):
they both have almost the same amount of carriers. They
both ever seven point six yards to carry. They don't
care who it is getting the ball, who it is scoring,
And I think that that really defines and the epitomizes
our team at every level. Grady is thrown for four
or eighteen yards in the game this year. He's also
thrown for eighty yards in the game this year. So
I think it's just our adaptability to go win play
the way that is needed for the opponent we have.

(29:28):
I think I think that's definitely our strongest asset. And
you know we're going to have to adapt again this
week and be able to do some things really well
in the third game in their own game to be
able to beat these guys too.

Yeah. I mean, our kids adaptability has been admirable because
it's not easy to see from most high schoolers in
a world where you're taught to worry about me, and
you're worried about your stats so you can post on
Instagram and Twitter. Our kids are worried about just getting wins.

Landing Grove joined US West Catholic at football coach. Here
in the Montel Construction coaches Corner, let's take a closer
look at Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, the fighting Hours, the
defending champs in Division five from a year ago. They
reach turn it out standing quarterback. I mean this guy six',
five two hundred plus. Pounds he's thrown for twenty five hundred,
yards thirty eight. Touchdowns THREE i t's running is not necessarily,

especially but he can do. What he's got three more rushing.
Touchdowns how do you look at them? Offensively coach trying
to attack them because they love to throw it even
more so than run the.

Football.

Yeah, no they're, quarterbacks special. TALENT i can't believe you's
not getting recruited at a higher level, either you, know
DON'T i. DON'T i. THINK i don't know if you
got any offers or. What but he's definitely a college football.
PLAYER i can tell you that. Much, yeah they're they're
they're dynamic on. Offense they remind me a lot of,
us except a little bit more heavy, throw a lot
bit more heavy. Throw but they're very versatile on what
they can. Do they can run the ball well with
multiple different. Schemes they get in and out of different,

(30:43):
formations and they'll they'll do a lot of prestat movement
with RPOs and. Options so, like those are some things
that remind me of, us and they do a really
good job out of. It and their quarterback is an
unbelievably good ball. Distributor they got some good, receivers but
he put the where needs to. Be AND i think
the biggest thing IS i think he's only thrown three
interceptions this, year if, care and that's that's impressive at
the rate they throw, it like thirty eight touchdowns and

(31:05):
three picks or. Whatever it, Is like if you don't
see that very often at any, level let alone going high.
School so you, know just keeping him under wraps and
keeping him, contained put some pressure on him is going
to be key to get him, uncomfortable because if we
let him get, comfortable it's gonna be a long night for.
Us so that's a that's a big part of the.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
Play they have beaten Unity. Christian they did that in
week down at the end of the regular. SEASON i
love that matchup by the, Way Unity christian beat them
last year down, there but thirty four to twenty Five
Unity christians still playing here On championship. Weekend do you
take anything from that, Film, landing because it's such a
different attack For Craig tibby And Unity christian what they do.

Offensively, YEAH i mean it's hard to do. That it's
the same thing with Our week nine game where they're
not going to be able to use that much for them.
Either Could we Played Zealand, west so you, know both
of us had very similar type of games and Wins
week nine, truthfully so it's REALLY i mean it could.
Help it could, Help Like darreon could watch that and
see what they're offensive Against unity and that could help
us on defense, Potentially but for like, us, offensively they're

not going to get much from. That but that's all right,
Too so there's a lot of pieces to, it. TRUTHFULLY
i mean that's a big win for the. Community is really.

Good landon because you've been there, before the experience and
obviously the kids Have does it help you as far
as preparation for championship weekend Because i've heard so many
stories from coaches when it is your first, time it's.
Difficult obviously it's not the first. Time, Pontiac notedy And,
prep LIKE i, mentioned defending state, champions but you know
the warmth inside Of Ford field the game, day when

do you get, there when do you? Eat all that
kind of? Stuff it really is, cumbersome isn't.

It and there's a lot that goes into. IT i
learned a lot in twenty twenty. TWO i, did and
it definitely helps knowing like the routine of. It and,
REALLY i mean it's been that was a few years ago,
now And Connor, Olshsky Jacob Timmergrady, agusted And Maxwell alvin
are the only ones who dressed for that game as,
freshmen so they're really the only ones who went through.
It BUT i do think it helps that our kids

(32:55):
grew up watching those teams that won at five times
in a Row West, catholic and obviously the kids that
are on our team now we're at the game in
twenty twenty, two so like seeing that environment and kind
of knowing what it looks like and it's not a
surprise to them to like know that it's going to
be loud in there and that it's going to be
warm in. There so like that part of IT i
think is an advantage versus being at a program that
may have never been. There but like you, know for,
coaches most all of our staff is the same as

(33:15):
it was in twenty twenty, two so like knowing the
ROUTINE i think is extremely. Helpful i'm knowing what to
expect when we get there is. Helpful knowing that you
have a short warm up and what that looks like is.
Helpful knowing that the locker room we get to use
is small and how to navigate that is. Helpful so
there's certainly some advantages to, it but it's been this
game is certainly not an advantage because they were there
last year and won it last. Year SO i think
both teams are going to be comfortable being there and they're.
NOT i don't THINK i don't think they're going to

(33:36):
be overwhelmed by the environment or playing out, portfield AND
i don't think we, will WHICH i think is going
to make an awesome football, game which is going to
be fun for.
