HEmotions (Coffee + Comics + Cigars): Why Are Men Afraid to Ask for Help?

Men often avoid seeking help and tend to downplay their physical and mental health. They view asking for assistance with psychological or emotional issues as a sign of weakness or shame. Acknowledging a problem and reaching out is seen as lacking strength, while being tough, macho, and manly is associated with ignoring pain, avoiding problems, and denying reality. This perception largely stems from other men, who are often the harshest critics, judging and shaming their peers. They knock each other down and criticize those who are already struggling.

Men need to change how they view asking for help. Why can’t it be seen as a sign of being smart, observant, aware, and wise? Admitting a problem should be recognized as a display of strength, not weakness. Men should encourage each other, especially younger men, to acknowledge problems instead of ignoring them. What’s the logic in letting things get worse by avoiding issues? Where’s the manliness or strength in that?

ADVICE: Men should build a strong circle of brothers to navigate life with. While men are responsible for providing and protecting, their family, resources, health, faith, and sanity often face challenges and threats in the world. Surrounding themselves with men who understand, who will fight for them and stand beside them, is essential. That’s tribe, and without it, men slowly fade.
