The Bondi Beat shooting has been declared a terrorist incident,
with the Prime Minister labeling it a targeted attack on
Jewish Australians. At least sixteen people have been killed and
dozens more injured after shots were fired into the Chunika
by the Sea event marking the first day of Hanuka.
One shooter is dead while a second is in custody

in a critical condition. Anthony Abernezi describing it as an
evil act of anti Semitism.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
One of the victims has been identified as Rabbi Eli Schlanger,
with a family member confirming his death on social media.
The British born rabbi had served the community for eighteen
years and was one of the organizers of the event.
This witness, Cassius, was there when the shooting unfolded, telling
the ABC it was chaos.

Just saw loads of people running on the beach. Everyone
was shook up, didn't know what to do. I saw
a few old ladies being pushed over in the commotion.
Everyone was just freaked out and didn't really know what
was happening. Because it's just like now bond By Beach,
the most safest place in the world.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Meantime, the Australian Security Intelligence Organization is investigating the identity
of the shooters. Despite the incidents, there will be no
change to Australia's terror threat level. ASIO boss Mike Burgess
also confirming one of the shooters had been on their radar.

Like the New South Wales Police, one of these individuals
what's known to us, but not in an immediate threat perspective,
so obviously we need to look into what happened here.

In Queensland Police has confirmed it's closely monitoring the situation
and has reached out to leaders of the state's Jewish community.
Police have boosted patrols around places of worship and significance
to the Jewish community across Queensland.
