restaurant on the Gold Coast has gone viral after a
single mum opened a Japanese restaurant called jin is a Kaya,
and after it getting no customers, he sixteen year old
daughter Diana, did a social media post and it went
viral and now people are booking the restaurant out. It
is such a gorgeous story and they're both joining us
(00:21):
in the studio to talk about gin is a Kaya
and we have Diana and Aya morning guys, congratulations. You
need to explain what happened.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
So we tried social media at the start and then
it didn't work, so we kind of just gave up.
And then Davy Foggerty came up to us and he
reached out and he was like, oh, we want to
help you.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Who's Davy Foggerty.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
He's the owner of the Udi. Oh really, okay, here's
the reason why we blew up. So then he came
to a restaurant and he filmed a bunch of content,
he edited it and then sent it back to us
for us to post, and then it blew up over Nat. Wow.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Yeah, so how come he reached out to you?
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Was there a connection the ice cream shop Albaccio in Burley. Yes,
they were struggling as well. He reached out to them
and helped them and now they're viral. And then I
had texted them on Instagram and been like, how are
you guys doing because they are another family owned business
like us, And then they had referred us to David Foggerty.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
So he did it all just for free.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
It's just being nice. I tell us about the restaurant,
and you wanted to start it.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Like I divorced.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
I was living it with my friends then and then
my four keys as well, and that we are start
talking about what we want to do in the future.
In the future, right, yes, And now I spoke to
my brother and then brother said, if you want to
do something, just do it. I was thinking what I
can do? I wanna do this, yes, and then he
said yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Like it was literally we decided and then we went
next week to go look at places and then we yeah, it.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Kept looking at it, but you've done it beautifully, Thank you,
thank you. And the food was nuts good.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Well that's the most important thing, isn't it. Food and service?
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Yeah, it was like I was in Japan so then
you've gone viral because of your post which basically said, Hey,
no one's coming to my mum's restaurant. Can you help
us out?
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Now?
Speaker 1 (02:17):
What's happened?
Speaker 2 (02:18):
We've tripled our sales. Yeah, it's been crazy.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
And that bookings still coming in. They're just like pouring
in all the time.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yeah. Or do they say when they come in? Did
they say I'm here because of TikTok?
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Yeah? Well when I come in, I'm going to say
I'm here because of the radio.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
So what would you say the businesses? It must've well, actually,
let's go back. It wasn't have been tough when people
weren't coming into the restaurant.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
What happened?
Speaker 2 (02:43):
We were just losing money every single week. We weren't
getting paid and there was lots of times that we
wanted to quit but we didn't.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah, and look at you going and you're still playing
catch up, but you're on your way to catching up. Yes, yeah, yeah,
So when you hear that, don't think they're okay. Now
you still got to go and go for the experience,
pack the place out. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Do you feel a certain pressure now that people are
coming in because of this or you're just doing you.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
No, that's my that's my style. I'm not going to
change it.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
You know.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
It's like, yeah, I'm doing you my bye. I'm not
going to change for people, come everybody all for like
a QR card on the table easy, more like an order.
But that's not Japanese style. That's not my style to
do that. It's more communication for the customer.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
It's more fun.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Gin is a kaya? What does it mean?
Speaker 2 (03:33):
By the way, my uncle's the reason why we started
the restaurant. So it's my uncle's symbol from where.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Yeah, symbol name his name, yes, and means just as Japanese.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Bar, my brother's bar.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Oh I like that.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
I'm going to tell people I'm going to my brother's bar.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
How lucky are you?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
