Tiffany Lowrance embodies what it means to be a hometown hero. As the head volleyball coach at West Henderson High School since 2010, she recently received the prestigious Doris Howard Female Coach of the Year Award from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association – and for good reason.

Behind Tiffany's success lies a remarkable family legacy. Following in the footsteps of her mother, who coached at West Henderson for 35 years, Tiffany has created her own coaching dynasty. The volleyball program isn't just her job; it's truly a family affair. Her husband coaches football at the school, her sister serves as her assistant volleyball coach, and her children are deeply involved in athletics. This immersion in sports culture provides Lowrance with unique insights that translate to success on the court.

The 2023 season proved historic for Coach Lowrance's program. Her team achieved perfection in conference play, going 36-0 without dropping a single set – an extraordinary accomplishment in competitive high school volleyball. When facing challenges during tournament play, her players maintained composure and focus, ultimately capturing the school's first volleyball state championship after previously finishing as runners-up twice. Lowrance's coaching philosophy emphasizes being present with teammates (she implements a no-phone policy during travel tournaments) and approaching the season as chapters to complete one step at a time.

Despite losing five seniors from her championship squad, Lowrance remains characteristically optimistic about the upcoming season. With approximately 100 young athletes enrolled in her summer volleyball camp, she's already developing the next generation of talent. Her competitive spirit, family values, and genuine connection with players create an environment where excellence flourishes. Want to learn more about exceptional community leaders? You brought donuts last week.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
I was a week off, you brought donuts last week.
I was a week off, I brought thedonuts last week.
I didn't realize today wasNational Donut Day, but more
importantly, it's our hometownheroes series.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
That's right.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
more importantly, this Friday morning.
It's always a privilege andhonor to be here with you, randy
, and meeting incredible men andwomen, hearing their stories
and sharing some incredible uhpeople to our community that
have been serving our communityit really is.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
It's really a nice way to wrap up our week, and
donuts or not, you know, it'salways fun to get together, and
today, tiffany lawrence is withus, and we're going to talk to
her a little bit more.
And first of all, though, we'regoing to talk to her a little
bit more, and first of all, though, we're going to check in
on the real estate market.
You know, tell me how thingsare going.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
The market continues to move.
Here in Henderson County it'ssoftened a little bit, but our
average single-family home priceover the last 12 months is at
$538.
We're averaging 126single-family homes a month
selling.
Over the last 12 months Reallythe last 24 months it's been
steady.
The demand here in HendersonCounty it's not what it was a
number of years ago but, themarket is healthy.

(02:11):
It's moving.
We have low inventory levels.
The demand again it'sappropriate.
I mean the demand compared tothe inventory.
Again it's still technically aseller's market.
We have a four-month supply ofinventory but the market's still
moving.
We're still seeing if it'spriced right.
We're still seeing multipleoffers on homes and again, but

(02:32):
also on the other side of thecoin, we see homes where we have
to do price adjustments.
So it's a bit of both right nowbut the market is very steady
and healthy.
We have an open house thisSunday at 1938 Upper Ridgewood
Boulevard in Druid Hills, 2 to 4for $325.
This is a 1,700 square foothome, 3-2.

(02:53):
Great home, druid Hills.
Definitely recommend going outand checking it out this weekend
.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Okay, and we were talking earlier about your
podcasts.
Those are available whereveryou get podcasts, and you can
learn a lot more about currentmarket conditions and listings,
et cetera, by checking out thosepodcasts.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Absolutely, and we're here every Thursday morning at
10 am.
We've been doing the radio showsince 2011,.
And then we do a number ofother radio shows.
We've done over 1,600 radioshows throughout the years.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
In addition to, again , we just use that as a platform
to share about our community, about what's going on in the
market.
We love promoting ournonprofits and, again, our
podcast, as you mentioned.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
There's a lot of great information there, yeah
yeah Well, join me in welcomingTiffany Lawrence to the
microphone.
Good morning, tiffany, goodmorning.
How are you?
I'm doing well.
How about you?
I'm doing great.
Thank you for coming to visitwith us this Friday morning.
We wanted to talk a little bit,if we could, about your recent
award from the North CarolinaHigh School Athletic Association

(03:59):
.
You were named the Doris HowardFemale Coach of the Year.
So gosh, that's prettyincredible.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Such an honor.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
yes, yeah, tell us about the day job.
What got you nominated here?

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Well, I believe I just had a solid foundation
right from you know, growing upwith my mom as my coach and just
knowing how important thesegirls look up to you and how
important that you're availableto them all the time, and I just
put a whole lot of love intomaking sure they're growing
every single day, on and off thecourt.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
How long have you been the coach at Wes Henderson?

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I've been head coach since 2010.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Wow, that's incredible.
And how was your season thisyear?

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Oh, it was amazing Right from the get-go.
We just started off strong inthe gym and you know, we went
through that downtime withHelene.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
We all kind of caught our breath and we were just
itching to get back in the gymand once we were able to, we
just kept hitting it off andjust, you know, playing up to
our potential, and we justdominated on the court and it
was just so much fun to, so muchfun to witness that's amazing,
I'm sure, over the years so 15years as the head coach at West

(05:12):
um, it's I'm sure it's amazingto see the I mean you're able to
see the, the, the, you'restudents and your players come
through from their freshmen, through their senior year and
just all those cycles thatyou're able to walk through with
the kids, I mean in theleadership that you develop on
your program.
Again, 15 years, again, it'sincredible what you've been

(05:32):
doing.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
It's been a joy.
The whole family's pretty muchinvolved in athletics and
they've been in the gym, so it'sjust been a family affair with
all the girls and my personalfamily, and it's just an honor
to be able to serve these kidsand, you know, watch them grow.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Well, a little bit about the person you received
this Doris Howard Female Coachof the Year Award.
And a little bit about DorisHoward.
She had a 41-year career as ateacher and coach in Cumberland
County and retired after the87-88 season.

(06:10):
In women's basketball.
Had a record of 533 and 231,coached at Hope Mills Central
and Cape Fear High Schools.
Coached at Hope Mills Centraland Cape Fear High Schools.
Was a head coach in tennis, basketball and softball during
her career and she received aDistinguished Service Award from

(06:32):
the North Carolina High SchoolAthletic Association in 1989.
And also coached twice in theEast-West All-Star Basketball
game in Greensboro.
So to be receiving the awardthat's named after someone with
a record like that, tell usabout how that feels.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Oh well, I got the phone call.
I was just in awe and in suchan honor and I'm blessed to be
able to even be considered forthe award.
But you know, it all boils downto these kids that I get to
coach they're they helped me getthat award, um yeah they, they
just, you know, they pushed meto be always pushing them.
So we're, you know, it's just aa big family affair for me and

(07:14):
um, so it was such an honor andI couldn't have got it without
those girls so I mean when Ithink you're underplaying when
you say family affair.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Let let's talk about context.
Your mother was the head coachfor 35 years at Wes Henderson.
Yes, oh wow, I mean that'sincredible, and so I mean you
grew up.
That was life for you.
It was.
And then here you are, continuing the legacy.
I mean, was that something thatever crossed your mind that you
know?
You thought you could be inthose shoes being the head coach

(07:44):
.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Oh well, the shoes of head coach.
Yes, I've always loved, youknow loved taking over, you know
a team and you know watchingthem develop.
Now my mom's shoes.
I don't know if I can fulfillthem, but you know she's always
been a constant.
You know someone to look up tofrom.
You know, when I was little shecoached me.

(08:06):
Hopefully I'll have the honorof coaching my daughter as well.
She's already in the volleyballworld, so it's just a family
affair.
We're always in the gym, sospecial yes.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
Tell us about the family.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Well, I have, my husband coaches football at west
.
Okay, my son is uh gonna be ajunior sophomore there at west.
He plays football, basketballand baseball.
And my sweet daughter is 10 andshe's playing, you know,
volleyball all the time now aswell that's amazing and oh, I

(08:39):
forgot my, my sister's, myassistant coach, so we're just
all together.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
It really is a family affair.
That's amazing.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
And you know, I think coaches have such and teachers
I mean, have such an incrediblerole in our kids' lives.
These days, again, sports justhappen to be the catalyst for
these life conversations.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Oh yeah, and it's so important to be there for those
girls.
Of course, you have to coacheach one of them pretty
differently for them to be ableto excel on the court, but it's
just an honor and it's achallenge every year and I love
it.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
I was about to say what is your biggest challenge
when you look at the coaching, what you do, what is your
biggest challenge?

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Well, the girls bought in this year.
They bought into how we ran ourpractices.
I give them a lot of.
We even listen to music duringpractice.
But I was like you have to stayfocused, you have to keep
talking and do, and they justthey work hard and it's just.
You know.
It's a balance of trying to seewhat works best for them and to
be able to incorporate that in,you know, your practices and

(09:52):
game situations and and it's andit's it helped a lot this year
and I thought the girls justbought in and we all just made
it happen that's amazing what,uh, what's changed?

Speaker 1 (10:03):
tiffany and the students and and everybody in
the 15 years that well, I meaneven going back to your mom's
career, you, why?
What have you seen?

Speaker 2 (10:12):
that's different oh well, the technology, the phones
, all that is it's.
You know it can get in the waya lot.
Yeah, I also coach travel ballas well and we don't have phones
out at all during ourtournaments.
And I think that's so importantfor them to like just Be
present.
And be a team Like just you knowgetting along, you know on the

(10:36):
court and off the court, andjust you know that team unity is
just so important and I thinkthat really how we accomplished
a state championship this year.
You know our teamwork and sothat has you know that just
transfers over.
I'm not in the social.
I mean I have social media, butI'm not.
I don't dive in like thesegirls do, so I don't really know

(10:57):
much about it, but we just tryto.
You know, just stay grounded.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
Was this your first state championship?
It is.
That's incredible.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
Yes, we had two state runner-ups One was in 2019, and
I can't remember when thatother one was but I had two
state runner-ups and this is ourfirst.
Was that a conversation at thebeginning of the year, that that
that goal, or is that abyproduct of doing the things
right, I mean every single day,I mean it's the it's always your
end goal, of course, but uh,the girls are always wanting

(11:28):
that state championship well, but we always just focus on each
chapter and we've got to finishthe season first, and then
we've got to start doing theplayoffs and then it's just take
it one day at a time.
We always just call them.
We finish one chapter, let'scheck off the next one.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Was there any standout moments this year?
That was just a turning point.
You're like oh, these students, these athletes get it.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Well, we went 36-0 in our conference this year.
We didn't lose one set, wow, which was pretty amazing.
So when we got those challengeswhere we did lose a couple sets
, they did not give up.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
They didn't get rattled.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
They didn't.
You could see it in their faces, you can see it in the parents'
faces.
They just stayed focused andyou know we could have our
little moments but they alwaysbounce back.
Even with the kids on the bench, they picked everybody up, they
made sure they just everyonestayed on, the stayed focused
and just played their hearts outthat's amazing.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
I can tell you're so proud of this group oh, I'm very
proud what's uh in in just acouple of minutes.
We've got left.
What's next what to talk about?
I mean, you've got a follow-uphere.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
I know Well we lost five seniors but we still have
that group.
They play all the time.
They're a year-long playingvolleyball and they just love to
be in the gym.
We start our volleyball campnext week, uh, with the little
kids and they're all coming into work it.
We have.
We have about 100 kidsattending right now, so it's

(12:58):
going to be a, you know, a good, good start of the season.
Then we get all back togetherend of july and we just start
dialing in and, uh, and I'mlooking forward to it, we should
be pretty decent this year aswell.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Well, that state championship, I mean, that draws
kids in.
Well, let's do this, let'scheck out this volleyball thing.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
We're very competitive girls which.
I am very competitive as well.
That's awesome.
That's nice.

Speaker 1 (13:23):
Well, we just want to say congratulations.
We just wanted to shine alittle light on the things that
