Today, in our studio, I havethe distinct pleasure of
introducing your neighbor, saraiMartinez, and she is the owner
of Sarai by Day.
Welcome, sarai.
How are you doing today?
Speaker 3 (01:12):
I'm doing great.
How are you doing?
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Excellent, I'm doing
great.
Thank you for joining us today,so we're thrilled to have you
here, eager to learn more aboutyou and your business, and if
you could tell us about yourcompany.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yes, so I am a
hairstylist.
I've been in the hairstylistbusiness I guess for 20 years.
I've been doing hair throughoutNew England.
I've been in the North Shorefor 10 years and I absolutely
love what I do.
I've branched out a little bitsince being in the North Shore.
I've grown a lot.
(01:46):
I do a lot of session styling.
Now I'm signed on with AnchorArtists and I have a local
business in Salem, sarai Baidei, where you can visit me and have
sessions with me on Derby.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Wonderful.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
That's just one of a
few things that I do.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
There's several of
layers okay, can you go into
some of those layers?
What you you do hair stylistand session stylist.
What are those?
Speaker 3 (02:16):
so that consists of
um me being either commercial,
doing commercial it could be forReebok, nike, depending on the
client and then I come in and domodels, hair and makeup, most
likely for companies, and that'sthrough the agency.
And then, when I'm in the salon, I do more like services, like
(02:41):
haircutting, styling and bridal.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Wonderful, and how
did you get into this business?
Speaker 3 (02:48):
I kind of just been
doing it naturally since I was a
young girl, just something thatjust came naturally to me.
I'm originally from Boston,Mass.
So like I would just literallyhave everyone in my house just
come in do their hair, my motherwould have her girlfriends come
.
It was just kind of somethingthat came to me naturally.
(03:09):
And then eventually I came backto it after I went to college
for fashion design and decidedto do hair.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Beautiful.
So what are some myths andmisconception in your industry?
Speaker 3 (03:22):
What are the myths?
And I've been thinking aboutthis question because I think
one of the myths is or what theytend to sell, is that you
easily pick up on things andthat you get a clientele right
away and you just start makingmoney right away.
But it's really aboutrelationships and time, a lot of
(03:47):
time, which they don't tell youin school.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
And relationship is
key.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
And relationship is
key.
So I think one of the myths isthat you kind of just get out of
school and you start working.
That's just actually not how itworks at all.
You have to learn a lot, there's a big learning process
and you get burnt a lot and youupset a lot of people.
It's very humbling at first, but then very rewarding.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Glad to hear about
the rewarding.
So outside of work, what do youdo for fun?
Speaker 3 (04:24):
That's a good
question.
These days I've been kind offocusing a lot of work.
What do you do for fun?
That's a good question.
These days I've been kind offocusing a lot on work, but I
like to incorporate fun in mywork.
So lately I've been doing a lotof events, making new
relationships so people can getfamiliar with the brands right
by day, and that's what I'vebeen doing for fun, believe it
(04:44):
or not.
So I've been occupying my timewith, you know, just getting to
know people in my community, getting to know people in my
area, and that's what I've beendoing for fun.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Well, it's always fun
getting to know people.
Meeting and learning aboutsomeone different is always
inspiring.
It's always uplifting becauseit's a great way also to meet
friends and make friends.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Absolutely.
So yeah, no, I try to, you know, build relationship as much as
I can, and then, when I'm notdoing that, I spend time with my
two children.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Beautiful, beautiful.
So let's change gears a littlebit, sarai, can you describe one
hardship or one of life'schallenge that you rose above
and can now say because of ityou're better and stronger?
What comes to your mind?
Speaker 3 (05:49):
of my career.
This wasn't the only careerthat I had.
I had to juggle a lot of otherthings in order to make this my
primary career and in the midstof that I think I had to really
build myself up and it'sexhausting.
So one of the hardships I wouldsay is kind of just juggling.
Being a young mom jugglinghaving the career that's
bringing in the butter and thenhaving the career that you want
(06:11):
as your dream job I think that'sone of the things that was one
of my hardships.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Wow, okay, please
tell our listeners one thing
that they should remember aboutSurvive by Day.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
I think one thing
they should remember as an
advice I would say you know, just never stop going after what
you really believe in.
Don't let anyone take you outof your journey and just
continue moving forward.
And Sarai Baidei has had, like, several of trials and
tribulations and I'm just happywhere it is today.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Okay, well, we were
grateful.
