SPEAKER_00 (00:02):
Hello everyone, my name is Jared Altic and I'm a
chaplain with the policedepartment.
If you're a regular listener, welcome back to the start of our
sixth year.
If you're new here, maybe you'rewondering who is this guy behind
the microphone?
Well, I'm a chaplain with thepolice department here in Kansas

(00:23):
City, Kansas.
I've been an active policechaplain for a decade, and I've
served as a minister at the samechurch for over 25 years.
I've been married for 30 years,I've got five adult kids and
grandchildren too.
I'm a native Kansan who loves totravel and loves to come back
home again.

(00:43):
Sometimes people see the titleHey Chaplain and assume I'm a
police officer and I'm not.
Others assume I'm some sort ofmonk or priest, or some kind of
scary guy who might hit you overthe head with a Bible.
The truth is, I'm just a guy whohas spent nearly 30 years
counseling and caring formilitary and law enforcement

(01:04):
families.
I spend my time at police rollcalls in the passenger seat of
cop cars during ride-alongs andon scene during those long,
difficult, critical incidents.
I see the toll that a lawenforcement job takes on the
faces of my officers, and that'swhy I'm here.
You might be thinking, great, another podcast where someone

(01:28):
rants for three hours.
Let me stop you there.
This is not a rant and ramblekind of show.
Hey Chaplin is a wellnessresource designed specifically
for the law enforcementcommunity.
The name comes from the phrasethat I hear regularly.
Hey Chaplain, you got a minute?

(01:48):
Or, hey chaplain, can we talk?
While I'm a minister, this showis not overtly religious.
My goal isn't to force my faithon you.
It's to help you survive andthrive in a career that can be a
relentless slog, a marathon, during which you might ask
yourself, why am I still doingthis?

(02:09):
Why am I still a cop?
On Hey Chaplin, we look ateverything from the humor of the
job to the deep trauma,work-life balance, suicide
prevention, and leadershipskills.
We bring in guests from the LAPDto Scotland Yard, ranging from
dispatchers to detectives andfrom federal agents to patrol

(02:32):
officers.
As we start year 6, I want toremind you why this resource
exists and why it should existin your toolkit.
First, I want to bridge the gap.
I realized early on that veteranofficers have a wealth of wisdom
that doesn't always get passeddown to the next generation.

(02:52):
This podcast serves as a lastingarchive of that wisdom.
Second, I want to break theisolation.
This job can make you feel likeyou're on an island.
By hearing real stories frompeers who have overcome their
darkest demons, you may realizethat you are not alone.

(03:14):
And third, I want to buildcultural competency.
If you're a helper, a socialworker, a medical doctor, or
fellow chaplain, this show isyour cultural immersion into the
world of those you serve.
These conversations are how Ilearned to be better at

(03:34):
supporting the officers.
You may have noticed that Idon't run commercials on this
show.
I don't have commercialadvertisers or sponsorships, and
I don't want them.
I just have you.
Hey Chaplin has grown to all 50states and over 140 countries

because of one thing (03:51):
word of mouth.
So I have three favors to ask.
First, listen and follow.
Go back through the archives.
There are over 240 episodeswaiting for you.
Hit that follow or subscribebutton so that you never miss a
Monday episode.
Second, share.

(04:15):
a friend.
And third, connect.

the text the show or leave avoicemail feature that's in the
show notes.
Finally, a word on how we keepthe lights on here.
For years, I paid for this outof my own pocket.

(04:36):
But as the show has grown, sohave the costs of hosting and
software and equipment.
To keep the show 100% commercialfree, I rely on you.
And so if you find value here, please consider buying me a

(04:58):
veteran, or a clinician.
Your contributions ensure thatthis remains a free and valuable
resource for the officers wholisten.
Thank you for being part of thiscommunity.
Whether you're a rookie juststarting out or a veteran
looking toward retirement, I'mhonored to spend time with you
