His purpose for writing is revealed at the end
of the book in chapter 20, verse31.
He says, This book was writtenso that you may believe that
Jesus is the Christ, the Son ofGod, and that by believing you
may have life in his name.
So the Gospel of John is alwaystrying to help us see who Jesus

is.
And as we read through the book,we discover that there are seven
I am statements that Jesusmakes, statements designed to
help us understand the identityof Jesus and what he has come to
do.
So we read Jesus say, I am thelight of the world, I am the
vine, I am the door, I am thegood shepherd, I am the way, the

truth, and the life, I am theresurrection and the life.
I am, I am, seven times.
Today, I want us to think of oneof those statements that may
seem a bit odd.
Jesus says in John chapter 6,verse 35, I am the bread of
light.
It's important to know that itis the second.

I am a statement that Jesusmakes the first one.
I am the light of the world.
I am statement that Jesus makesfundamentals of the light.
(14:50):
We can't live without food inour body.
Clearly, our relationship withJesus is fundamental for life.
Without him, we only have death.
But with him, we have life.

Life to the full.

When Jesus says that he is the bread of life, it
seems like a strange thing tosay.
But when we see the context ofthe words, it makes perfect
sense.
Think of it.
Here is Jesus, and he stands upand says, I am the bread of
life.
But just before this, he waswith a great crowd of 5,000
people.
And he asked his disciples,where shall we buy bread for
(19:32):
these people to eat?
And the disciples say, We don'thave the money to feed all these
people.
There is a boy here who has fivesmall barley loads.

Are you hungry for the things ofthis world?
But having faith in Jesus Christwill bring life to your soul and
will last for eternity.
Because Jesus is the bread oflife.

The story today is about a 20th-century hymn
written in 1958 by RalphCarmichael.
Born in Quincy, Illinois in1927, his mother was a gifted
Bible teacher and his father apastor.
His father also played thefiddle, but some in his church
called fiddles the devil'sinstruments.

So, Reverend Carmichael stoppedplaying it and gave it to his
four-year-old son Ralph,arranging music lessons for him
also.
Over time, Ralph not onlymastered the fiddle, but also
the piano, the trumpet, andexcelled in voice lessons.
After committing his life toJesus Christ at the age of 17,
(26:19):
Ralph enrolled in Bible college.
Although he struggled with theacademics of Hebrew and Greek,
he reveled in music and inorganizing choirs and
orchestras.
While in school, he produced alocal weekly Christian
television show.
For five years he served as theminister of music at a Baptist
church in Los Angeles.

It was while he was in thisministry that he wrote his
classic hymn of invitation, TheSavior is Waiting.
It was also here that he beganwriting most of the music for
the movies produced by the BillyGraham Evangelistic Association.

But having a person as bread isa bit strange.
But that's the truth of theChristian faith.
Our faith is all about a person.
It's not a philosophy to do one.
It's not a force to trust.
It's a person.
It's the person of Jesus Christ.

And it's to him that we must goto have life.
And I don't just mean lifeeverlasting.
What a quality of life.
A life that is filled with peacein the midst of strife.
A life that is filled withself-worth when everyone is
telling you that you arenothing.
A life filled with meaning, in aworld that seems to be
unraveling, a life filled withgrace, in a world that is often
(30:30):
filled with rules andregulations.
It's a life of boldness and joy.
And I can go on.
But everything that means forlife you will find in Jesus.
And what a powerful image.
Like physical bread, which wehave to keep to gain
nourishment.
So Jesus is the bread that wemust take in.

So does we cannot have his lifeby simply thinking that he is a
good man?
No, he is the bread of life,that we must take into our lives
by faith.
We need to commit our lives tohim and allow him to be such a
part of us that he directs ourambitions, guides our decisions,
and commands our lives.

Is Jesus the bread of life foryou?
Or are you seeking the things ofthis world to satisfy your
eternal hunger?
If that's the case, you'll comeup empty every time.
Jesus is the bread of life onwhich we must allow our souls to
feed.
It is only through faith in himthat we have life.

Michael Card affirms Jesus to bethe bread of life broken to set
us free in light of the world.

You are the light of the world of God, and you make
your servant shine.
So how could there be anydarkness in me if you are the
light of the word?
If you are the light of theworld, you are the bread of life

of church, broken desert.
So how could there be any hungerfee?
If you are the bread of life, ifyou are the bread of life.

You've overcome the world.

And we've discovered that Jesus makes this statement
just after his feeding a largecrowd with some bread and fish.
And a problem arises.
The crowds follow Jesus notbecause of who he was, but
because of what he could do forthem.
They were using him to meettheir felt need.

Well, it wasn't long before thechild was back with the same
piece of bread.
But the jam had been licked off.
And wouldn't you know it?
The child had done it again,licked off all the jam and
brought back the bread.
The people of Jesus' dayfollowed him for the jam.
(34:16):
But Jesus says he's the bread oflife.
The life is in the bread, notthe jam.
You have to eat the bread ifyou're going to have life.
You can't exist on jam.
To be sure, there's lots of jamthat Jesus gives.
There's the jam of his peace inthe midst of a difficult time,
the jam of his presence in timesof fear and darkness, the jam of
(34:38):
answered prayer, the jam of aloving church.
It's all good.
But if your faith is based onthe jam, what happens if you
don't get that jam?
When the church isn't asfriendly as you think it should
be, when you don't have peace inthe midst of difficult times, or
your prayers aren't answered asyou like?
What happens to yourrelationship with Jesus Christ

then?
Do you turn your back on him andgrumble like the people in our
text at verse 36?
What miraculous sign then willyou give that we may see it and
believe you?
What will you do?
Give us more jam, they weresaying.
The life is not in the jam.
The life is in the bread, who isJesus Christ.

But that's the truth of theChristian faith.
Our faith is all about a person.
It's not a philosophy to do one.
It's not a force to trust.
It's a person.
It's the person of Jesus Christ.

And it's to him that we must goto have life.
And I don't just mean lifeeverlasting.
What a quality of life.
A life that is filled with peacein the midst of strife.
A life that is filled withself-worth when everyone is
telling you that you arenothing.
A life filled with meaning, in aworld that seems to be
unraveling, a life filled withgrace, in a world that is often

filled with rules andregulations.
It's a life of boldness and joy.
And I can go on.
But everything that means forlife you will find in Jesus.
And what a powerful image.
Like physical bread, which wehave to keep to gain
nourishment.
So Jesus is the bread that wemust take in.
(30:51):
So does we cannot have his lifeby simply thinking that he is a
good man?
No, he is the bread of life,that we must take into our lives
by faith.
We need to commit our lives tohim and allow him to be such a
part of us that he directs ourambitions, guides our decisions,
and commands our lives.
(31:11):
Is Jesus the bread of life foryou?
Or are you seeking the things ofthis world to satisfy your
eternal hunger?
If that's the case, you'll comeup empty every time.
Jesus is the bread of life onwhich we must allow our souls to
feed.
It is only through faith in himthat we have life.
(31:33):
Michael Card affirms Jesus to bethe bread of life broken to set
us free in light of the world.

You are the light of the world of God, and you make
your servant shine.
So how could there be anydarkness in me if you are the
light of the word?
If you are the light of theworld, you are the bread of life

So how could there be any hungerfee?
If you are the bread of life, ifyou are the bread of life.

You've overcome the world.

And we've discovered that Jesus makes this statement
just after his feeding a largecrowd with some bread and fish.
And a problem arises.
The crowds follow Jesus notbecause of who he was, but
because of what he could do forthem.
They were using him to meettheir felt need.

Well, it wasn't long before thechild was back with the same
piece of bread.
But the jam had been licked off.
And wouldn't you know it?
The child had done it again,licked off all the jam and
brought back the bread.
The people of Jesus' dayfollowed him for the jam.
(34:16):
But Jesus says he's the bread oflife.
The life is in the bread, notthe jam.
You have to eat the bread ifyou're going to have life.
You can't exist on jam.
To be sure, there's lots of jamthat Jesus gives.
There's the jam of his peace inthe midst of a difficult time,
the jam of his presence in timesof fear and darkness, the jam of
(34:38):
answered prayer, the jam of aloving church.
It's all good.
But if your faith is based onthe jam, what happens if you
don't get that jam?
When the church isn't asfriendly as you think it should
be, when you don't have peace inthe midst of difficult times, or
your prayers aren't answered asyou like?
What happens to yourrelationship with Jesus Christ
(35:00):
then?
Do you turn your back on him andgrumble like the people in our
text at verse 36?
What miraculous sign then willyou give that we may see it and
believe you?
What will you do?
Give us more jam, they weresaying.
The life is not in the jam.
The life is in the bread, who isJesus Christ.
