I'm Pastor Tom Cullen, and we'reasking the question on hope
today.
What did Jesus mean when he saidhe was the vine?
I'll warn you, the answer is notan easy one.
But if you stay with us and putyour trust in Jesus, I can tell
you, you will never be the same.
You'll discover wonder uponwonder.

Here is Rob and Mark and Days ofElijah.

These are the days of Elijah, declaring the word of
the Lord.
And these are the days of yourservant as righteous as being
store.
And all these are days of greatof that darkness and the Gospel

of John, chapter fifteen, versefive, Jesus says that he is the
vine and we are the branches.
SPEAKER_01 (13:52):
And very simply, Jesus is telling us that
Christianity is all about arelationship with Him.
Just as the branch is inrelationship with the vine.
I'll always remember Grover fromSesame Street teach about near
and far.
He begins very close to thetelevision screen and says, Then
(14:13):
he runs away and stops and turnsand says, Then he runs back into
the camera and says, In orderfor him to be with us, we
(15:00):
forgive it.
We cannot do it ourselves.
Now through faith in thesacrifice of Christ, we are
forgiven.
Our sin is paid for, and thatrelationship is restored.
(15:20):
The great news of the gospel isthat we who used to be far from
God have been brought nearthrough faith in Jesus Christ
and are able to live with Godnow and forever.
This is the truth that Jesusteaches us in our text today.
He's stressing that what countsin Christianity is the

relationship.

I am the vine, you are the princess.
He who abides in me will foreverbe fruitful indeed.
Truth and the light, no one getsto the far.

Now that raises the question, does this mean that
there are other vines?
And the answer is yes.
The vine was a symbol of Israel,and they understood that if a
person were to have arelationship with God, they
would have to be related in someway to the nation of Israel.
So Jesus is saying that all theimages of the vine used up to
(19:40):
this time in history are titles.
They are signposts, which allpoint to him who is the true
vine.
So now, if you want a truerelationship with God, it's not
through the people of Israel orthrough the rules and
regulations of Israel.
(20:50):
There is only one religion forthe There's only one person you
should come to, and that isJesus Christ.
The church must stumble and loseits way, and that's
heartbreaking, and we must doall we can to truly be the
church.
But the church's failures arenot a reason to walk away from
the faith.
Our faith must rest squarelyupon Jesus Christ.

He is the true vine.

It was in the Grace Church that he first professed
his faith and accepted JesusChrist as his Savior.
He was 17.
He remembers that a guestspeaker was presenting the
lesson that day and asked ifthere were any present who
wanted to become Christians.
John remembers that every boy inthe class stood up but him.
(25:32):
His teacher, Mrs.
Binkley, looked at him andgently encouraged him to stand
also.
Throughout his life, he alwaysremembered the influence of his
wonderful teacher.
Wilbur went on to become anoutstanding pastor, writer,
hymnist, and leader in thedenomination.
But he was most remembered forhis evangelism.

Hundreds were influenced to takea stand for Christ during his
crusades held in the UnitedStates, in Canada, and all
around the world.
In 1910, in the midst of theseendeavors, he wrote the hymn,
Our Great Savior, or as someknow it, Jesus, what a friend of
sinners.

Jesus was a friend for sinners.

Think of that image of the vine.
You don't have to know muchabout gardening to know that the
vine is the source of life forthe branches.
If the branch is to grow andbear fruit, that ability is
gained through attachment to thevine.
So it follows.

Some years ago, my son John andI cut down a huge branch from a
tree in the forest.
It was shaped like a giant wine.
So we stuck it firmly on theground and attached a large
piece of bunching cord to eachside, making a huge slingshot.
It was a ton of fun as welaunched golf balls into the air
in the summer.
(29:43):
And snowballs in the winter.
And over that time we noticedthat the branch never grew,
never born again.
Eventually we began to run.
(30:03):
But it was essentially dead.
For you and for me.
So we are to depend on Jesus toreproduce his life in us.
(30:25):
All we need to do is rest, tosurrender ourselves to Jesus
Christ.

Do you see the clouds or the setting sun?
Do you feel the winds of thespeech moving as broken hearts

What does that mean?
I once heard a fellow pastorshare his story of how when he
and a friend became a Christianat the same time, they would go
to prayer meetings and Biblestudies and worship together.
And the pastor said, I rememberone day walking to a Bible study
with this girl and saying to herhow hard I thought the Christian

life is.
And to my surprise, she agreedwith me.
She too had been finding ithard.
We had only been Christians fora short time, but we found that
there were so many things to do,so many good meetings to attend,
so much to read, so many ideasto think about.

We were trying too hard.
Christianity is not about tryingto keep certain rules and walk
in a certain way or performcertain rituals.
(34:32):
All of them are good and oftenhelp in our spiritual
development.
But these aren't what theChristian life is all about.
It is that when you become aChristian, the very life of
Jesus takes up residence in you.
He now lives in you.
And this new life of Christ setsyou free from sin and death and
enables you to live life forhim.
(34:55):
So the strength to live theChristian life is Christ alone.
Just as a vine is the source ofstrength to the branches.

What does that mean?
It means he is our strength.
We often pray, Oh God, give mestrength.
The kids give us a hard time,and we whisper the prayer, Oh
God, give me strength.
We have deadlines to meet atwork, and we pray, Oh God, give
me strength.
But that's a bad prayer.
Because it's not the truth.

God does not give strength inthe sense that he zaps us with a
lightning bolt, so then all of asudden we have the patience of
Mother Teresa, the speakingability of Martin Luther King,
and the physique of ArnoldSchwarzenegger.
No, no, no, no.
Listen to what Jesus is teachingus here.
He says he is divine.
He is our strength.

He doesn't give us a strength.
(43:03):
Are you trusting in him alone toproduce his life in you?
Or are you allowing your faithto rest on some other person or
a ritual or a situation?
Let me tell you plainly, we willall fail.
Only Christ will continually,unfailingly supply you with what
you need to live the Christianlife.

wisdom, your true worth, yourvision.

What does that mean?
It means he is our strength.
We often pray, Oh God, give mestrength.
The kids give us a hard time,and we whisper the prayer, Oh
God, give me strength.
We have deadlines to meet atwork, and we pray, Oh God, give
me strength.
But that's a bad prayer.
Because it's not the truth.

God does not give strength inthe sense that he zaps us with a
lightning bolt, so then all of asudden we have the patience of
Mother Teresa, the speakingability of Martin Luther King,
and the physique of ArnoldSchwarzenegger.
No, no, no, no.
Listen to what Jesus is teachingus here.
He says he is divine.
He is our strength.

He doesn't give us a strength.

Are you trusting in him alone toproduce his life in you?
Or are you allowing your faithto rest on some other person or
a ritual or a situation?
Let me tell you plainly, we willall fail.
Only Christ will continually,unfailingly supply you with what
you need to live the Christianlife.
