Robert Lowry is a name you willhear often as we discover the
stories of these traditionalhymns.
Born in 1826, Robert acceptedChrist as his personal savior at
the age of 17 after graduatingwith honors from Bucknell
University and having receivedhis doctorate, he began his

pastoral ministry.
He pastored several importantchurches in Philadelphia, New
Jersey, New York City, andBrooklyn.
Lowry was recognized as a mostcapable minister of the gospel,
possessing keen insight andstrong administrative ability.
He continued in active Christianministry until his homegoing in

1899.
Music and a knowledge ofhymnology were his favorite
studies.
He composed many hymns andtunes, publishing many
songbooks.
His hymn, Christ Arose, is anEaster celebratory hymn written
in 1874.
It was inspired during hisdevotions one night when Robert

read Luke 24, 6 to 8, where thepassage records in part He is
not here, but is risen.
There is a vivid contrast of theverses with their moods of death
