us all.
In this program and over thenext few programs, Pastor Tom
Cullen will be leading us on ajourney with Joseph, Jacob's
son, to whom he gave amulticolored coat.
Specifically today, we will hearof Joseph's learning of God's

sovereignty.

A little bit of gospel music toget us started.
We're going to be talking todayabout a God who is sovereign and
just what that means.
Let's begin with a group calledthe Social Security Boys.
That's their name.

This is what Paul prayed for theEphesians.

Our hope is in the Lord.

remarkable life filled withintrigue, drama, sorrow, and
victory.
But above all, it is a life thatrecognized the sovereignty of
God, the rule of God, in allsituations.

This is what Joseph says inchapter 45 of the book of
Genesis.
As he's reviewing his life withhis brothers, he says, I am
Joseph, whom you sold intoEgypt.
But God in his sovereignty had agreat plan, and it was he who
sent me here so that I couldsave your lives.
So then it was not you who sentme here, but God, he says in
(15:23):
verse 8.
A little further on, he'll putit like this as he speaks to his
brothers again.
You intended to harm me, but Godintended it for good, to
accomplish what is now beingdone.
The saving of many lives.
He was saying, God is sovereign,he's in control.

suffered terribly.
But through it all, he said thathe believed that God was in
control, that his will was beingdone.
He said to his brothers,intended for me.

the whole world, including innature and human creatures.
It is a hymn of assurance,confessing God's rule and

And we think that the situationis too large for God to redeem,

The Word of God says in Isaiah40 God sits enthroned above the
circle of the earth, and itspeople are like grasshoppers.
He stretches out the heavenslike a canopy, and spreads them
out like a tent to live in.
He brings princes to naught, andreduces the rulers of this world

to nothing.
No sooner are they planted, nosooner are they sown, no sooner
do they take root in the ground,than he blows on them and they
wither, and the whirlwind sweepsthem away like a calf.
My friends, do not despair.
Our God is sovereign.
He is the everlasting God, thecreator of the ends of the

earth, he does not grow tired orweary, and his understanding no
one can fathom.
He did not forget Joseph in themidst of the evil done to him by
his brothers.
And he has not forgotten you.
He is faithful forever, perfectin love.

So you can trust him.

In chapter 37, we read of how Jacob, Joseph's father,
begins to mourn because he'sbeen told that his beloved son
has been killed.
Jacob is heartbroken and willnot be consoled.
But then the text says,Meanwhile, in the midst of the
father's sorrow, God in hissovereignty is working for the
salvation of this man's family.
(33:40):
Meanwhile, we read theMidianites, the ones who
murdered Joseph from hisbrothers, had sold him in Egypt
to Oliver, one of Pharaoh'sofficials, and became a link in
the chain that led to Josephbecoming Prime Minister of Egypt
and Savior to his people in themiddle of a great famine.
(34:01):
It is so easy to forget that Godis in control, that he is
sovereign, and that he stillcares for you.
But it's not true.
And his concern for you and hisGod in his great empower is able
(34:22):
to use your present sufferingfor a great effect and great
purposes.
I told you in previous programsof how for two years I was very
ill.
Because of it, I had to give uphasty in a church that I loved.
I couldn't sleep, I couldn'teat, and I felt terrible.
But in the midst of it,unbeknownst to me, I started to

attend the same church as theproducer of this program.
He tapped me on the shoulder oneSunday and asked me to be part
of this ministry, and it hasbeen a blessing that I never
could have anticipated.
God in his sovereignty is atwork even in the midst of your
suffering.
And we are able to say, It iswell with my soul.

Joseph was a man who recognized that God was
sovereign and in control of thisworld.
And yet, he didn't blame God forhis difficulties or demand that
he act in a certain way.
Nor did he live life resignedly,saying, Oh well, God is in
control.
No, he lived a wonderfullyfaithful life that trusted God

as the king.

that can't be defied.

Compared to the glory and slowat the sound of your name,
everyone die onto the kneenaturally to worship the king

Do you have that assurance or do you know that no matter
what happens to you in life, Godis your king?
Jesus, the sovereign one who nowsits at the right hand of the
king and says to you Come to me,all you who are weary and

burdened, and I will give yourest.
Take my yoke upon you and learnfrom me.
For I am gentle and humble inheart, and you will find rest
for your soul.
Our Lord invites you to come tohim, to make him sovereign of
your life, and to receive hisrest, the rest of forgiveness
for a troubled conscience, therest of security in the midst of

a world gone mad, the rest ofpeace for a broken heart.
If you've heard God calling youtoday, make him sovereign of
your life and say to him, alongwith Jill Phillips, have thine
own way.
