It is an understatement to say that we live in difficult
times, and many of us wouldagree with the words of the Old
Testament Book of Job that says,We are born to trouble as surely
as hard to lie upward.
That certainly seems to be thecase with Joseph, whose life
we've been following in the bookof Genesis.
Trouble came to him, it comes tous as surely as hearks lie

upward.
What are we to do with trouble?
Is there relief?
Is there victory?
Stay with us as we examine whatGod's word says about trouble.

As you read through Joseph's story in Genesis
chapters 39, 40, and 41, youdiscover that he was struck with
one trial after another.
He is betrayed by his brothers,sold into slavery, so that he is
separated from his home andfamily.
And then he's wrongly accusedand then forgotten in the jail
by people.
(22:00):
I cannot do it.
I encourage those of you who arefacing multiple troubles today
and are thinking about giving upyour faith.
Don't do it.
Have a stubborn endurance andknow that God has not abandoned
(22:21):
you.
He didn't abandon Joseph.
And he promises never to leaveyou or forsake you.
The psalmist wrote, God is ourrefuge and our strength, and
ever-present help in trouble.
So we are encouraged in the NewTestament to run with
perseverance and have the racemarked out for us.
(22:42):
I don't worry o'er the future,for I know what Jesus said, and
today I'll walk beside him, forhe knows what lies ahead.

He gave his life to Jesus Christ at an early age.
In childhood, he demonstrated astrong voice and a love for
music.
After attending schools inTennessee and Missouri, Bartlett
took to the road, teaching atsinging schools and writing
songs.
As a businessman, he establishedhis career working for the

Central Music Company, anArkansas company that published
shape notebooks in 1918.
He helped form the HartfordMusic Company that became a
driving force in the developmentof Southern gospel music.
He also established the HartfordMusic Institute, which trained
hundreds of teachers andmusicians each year.

Notably, one of those studentswas Albert E.
Bromley, who later authored thewell-known hymn All Fly Away.
In 1939, Eugene Bartlettsuffered a stroke that left him
partially paralyzed.
His traveling and performingdays were over, and he was to
live only two more years.

During his illness, he devotedhis time to studying the Bible
and counting his blessings.
The last of his eight hundredhymns was his most difficult to
write.
It was a culmination of hislife's work.
In his now impaired condition,he painfully wrote it, phrase by

phrase, and note by note, andcalled it Victory in Jesus.
Eugene Bartlett's sinceretestimony is that our victory is
assured in the victory of JesusChrist.

This is Joseph's situation.
His dependence upon God neverwavered.
But in the midst of trouble, itseems to have happened.
He says in Genesis chapter 40,verse 8, that he was not able to
interpret Pharaoh's dream.
Joseph didn't abandon his God.
Instead, he threw himself uponGod in his rock and fortress.
(33:40):
And while he was in thatterrible prison, he experienced
the kindness of God and wasgranted favor.
It is Satan who tries toconvince us that we should ease
up in our spiritual quest, thatwe should back off in our
service to God and his hurt,that we should stay at home and
sit on the couch and take iteasy.
It is Satan who tries toconvince us that God is found
(34:02):
only when the sun is shining,the flowers are blooming, and
the world is good.
If this is what you think, Ipray that God in his mercy will
rescue you from such a delusion.
For down through the ages ourChristians have found that it is
when they are in the thick ofservice, when they are up to
their elbows in trouble, thatthey are driven to depend on God
(34:25):
more, and they in turn discoverthe treasures of his grace and
his provision.
No wonder Charles Spurgeon oncesaid, Those who dive into the
sea of affliction bring up rarepearls.

Tom (38:40):
And during the last twenty-nine years of living with
our son, I have seen my wifetake a dark time and turn it
into a ray of light for otherparents in a similar situation.
I've seen Janet take our troubleand speak meaningfully and
helpfully to others and be anambassador for Christ.
She is able to be of helpbecause she's been there
(39:03):
herself.
Thornton Wilder makes this pointso well in his three-minute
drama entitled The Angel ThatTroubled the Waters.
It's based on the gospel storyof the pool of Bethesda in John
chapter 5.
There we meet a doctor who has awound that will not heal.
Like the others gathered at thepool, he seeks the healing that
(39:24):
is found in the waters.
But he hears a messenger fromGod say to him, Draw back, good
doctor, healing is not for you.
Without your wound, where wouldyour power be?
It is your very sorrow that putskindness in your face and makes
your low voice tremble into thehearts of men and women.
(39:45):
The angels themselves cannotheal the wretched, as can one
human being broken on the wheelof life.
In love's service, only thewounded can serve.
The doctor turns away from thepool with disappointment.
But even as he turns, a mancomes running to him, begging
him to help and heal his sickson and daughter.
(40:08):
Only you who are wounded, hecries, can heal.
So Scripture says, Praise be tothe God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who comforts us inall our troubles, so that we can
comfort those in any troublewith the comfort we ourselves
receive from God.

God was with Joseph.
And so for you.

God is with you.
How do I know?
Because many years after Joseph,God's son Jesus came to earth
and faced terrible trouble.
In fact, Jesus faced thegreatest trouble so that you
don't have to.
He was crucified for your sinand mine.
He took on the terror of deathso that you can know newness of

life now and forevermore atGod's side through faith in him.
And on the third day, Jesus rosefrom the dead and promises that
he will be with you to the veryend of the age.
He will not abandon you when youface trouble.
He will not leave you alone whentrials come your way.

Notably, one of those studentswas Albert E.
Bromley, who later authored thewell-known hymn All Fly Away.
In 1939, Eugene Bartlettsuffered a stroke that left him
partially paralyzed.
His traveling and performingdays were over, and he was to
live only two more years.

During his illness, he devotedhis time to studying the Bible
and counting his blessings.
The last of his eight hundredhymns was his most difficult to
write.
It was a culmination of hislife's work.
In his now impaired condition,he painfully wrote it, phrase by

phrase, and note by note, andcalled it Victory in Jesus.

This is Joseph's situation.
His dependence upon God neverwavered.
But in the midst of trouble, itseems to have happened.
He says in Genesis chapter 40,verse 8, that he was not able to
interpret Pharaoh's dream.
Joseph didn't abandon his God.
Instead, he threw himself uponGod in his rock and fortress.

And while he was in thatterrible prison, he experienced
the kindness of God and wasgranted favor.
It is Satan who tries toconvince us that we should ease
up in our spiritual quest, thatwe should back off in our
service to God and his hurt,that we should stay at home and
sit on the couch and take iteasy.
It is Satan who tries toconvince us that God is found

only when the sun is shining,the flowers are blooming, and
the world is good.
If this is what you think, Ipray that God in his mercy will
rescue you from such a delusion.
For down through the ages ourChristians have found that it is
when they are in the thick ofservice, when they are up to
their elbows in trouble, thatthey are driven to depend on God

more, and they in turn discoverthe treasures of his grace and
his provision.

sea of affliction bring up rarepearls.

And during the last twenty-nine years of living with
our son, I have seen my wifetake a dark time and turn it
into a ray of light for otherparents in a similar situation.
I've seen Janet take our troubleand speak meaningfully and

She is able to be of helpbecause she's been there

herself.
Thornton Wilder makes this pointso well in his three-minute
drama entitled The Angel ThatTroubled the Waters.
It's based on the gospel storyof the pool of Bethesda in John
chapter 5.
There we meet a doctor who has awound that will not heal.
Like the others gathered at thepool, he seeks the healing that

is found in the waters.
But he hears a messenger fromGod say to him, Draw back, good
doctor, healing is not for you.
Without your wound, where wouldyour power be?
It is your very sorrow that putskindness in your face and makes
your low voice tremble into thehearts of men and women.

The angels themselves cannotheal the wretched, as can one
human being broken on the wheelof life.
In love's service, only thewounded can serve.
The doctor turns away from thepool with disappointment.
But even as he turns, a mancomes running to him, begging
him to help and heal his sickson and daughter.

Only you who are wounded, hecries, can heal.
So Scripture says, Praise be tothe God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who comforts us inall our troubles, so that we can
comfort those in any troublewith the comfort we ourselves
receive from God.

How do I know?
Because many years after Joseph,God's son Jesus came to earth
and faced terrible trouble.
In fact, Jesus faced thegreatest trouble so that you
don't have to.
He was crucified for your sinand mine.
He took on the terror of deathso that you can know newness of

life now and forevermore atGod's side through faith in him.
And on the third day, Jesus rosefrom the dead and promises that
he will be with you to the veryend of the age.
He will not abandon you when youface trouble.
He will not leave you alone whentrials come your way.
