SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
Hello and welcome to episode number 153 of the I'm
Hormonal Podcast.
I'm your host, Bridget Walton.
I'm so happy that you're heretoday.
I'm so glad that you came backor that you found me for the
first time.
Welcome to you.
I'm Bridget, a women's hormonecoach, and I help women using
holistic nutrition, functionallab testing, and personalized

(00:24):
protocols to help you understandwhat's going on with your
hormones.
What got you to where you are?
Where do you need to go, and howcan we get there as soon as
possible?
So that's what we are doing hereon the I'm Hormonal Podcast.
We have usually one episode aweek for you on Tuesdays, a
little bit of a longer episode, and then Thursdays are mini

(00:48):
episodes like this where we justtouch, touch on a topic real
quick or recap.
So let's get into it on thatnote.
GLP1s, that's a topic that Iwanted to touch on today because
I mean it's obviously a hugepart of conversation here in the
United States.
I'm like getting just blastedwith commercials or ads for

(01:12):
them.
I'm always hearing about GLPones.
And it's also something that Italked about recently with some
other practitioners that I'vehad conversations with clients
or with friends with.
So I thought we should talkabout it.
Now, one thing that I've beenasked in the past is, hey, I'm
taking a GLP one.
Can we work together?
Or is that, you know, is that ashowstopper?

(01:34):
But the answer is a resoundingno, not a showstopper at all.
And actually, let me take a stepback because if you are somehow
new to this conversation aboutGLP1s, then you'll want to know
that GLP1s are medications thatprevent people from having that
same appetite, right?
So they're generally eating muchless food, they're losing

(01:57):
weight.
It's also supportive of bloodsugar, among other things.
This is a medication that, ofcourse, is going to be
prescribed by, well, by aphysician, by your physician, by
wherever you're getting it.
Um, but right, commonly folksare taking GLP1s in order to
achieve their weight loss goals.
Okay, now we're all on the samepage.

(02:20):
So now that we've got thatcontext, let's take a look at
what impact does taking GLP1shave when we're thinking about
your hormone healthspecifically.
And the first thing I want totouch on is protein, protein
deficiency, potentially, becausefor some folks who are taking
GLP1s, their appetite issuppressed so dramatically that

(02:41):
they're not hitting anywherenear their protein goals.
And protein, yes, is reallyimportant for your hormone
production.
Amino acids are literally thebuilding blocks for your
hormones.
Also, cholesterol, which iscoming from those healthy fats.
So when people say, Well, can wework together while I'm on a GIP

(03:01):
one?
I say, yes, this is probably thebest time for you to work
together with somebodyone-on-one because we can get
really nitty-gritty.
We can put together a planthat's going to work for you so
you understand how to build ahealthy, nutritious meal that's
going to help you feel satiated.

(03:21):
Once you come off those GLPones, you can build those good
habits that keep you feelinggood, keep your energy stable
while you're taking the GLP1.
So once you get off, you are ingood shape.
You don't have to figure thatout all at the same time when
your appetite is suddenly back.
But right, muscle mass is reallyimportant for your metabolic

(03:42):
health.
And so that will help you toowhen you do eventually come off
the medication, if you are ableto prioritize protein intake in
the meantime and make sure thatyou're building all the muscle
that you can.
Now, on this same note of eatingless, right?
Or some people experience nauseaor maybe don't want as much of a

(04:05):
variety as they did before, thenyou could be deficient in some
other nutrients, right?
There could be some nutrientgaps.
And so that's another area toowhere you want to be cognizant
of course, what nutrients areyou getting?
What's the variety that you'reeating when you are having those
varied meals?

(04:25):
So you can support your hormonesthe best way you can.
So you can prepare for pregnancyif that's your journey, so you
can support your gut health aswell.
On the note of gut health, whatare GLP1s doing when it comes to
your gut?
Well, they can slow motility, which means that more or less

(04:45):
your food is moving slowerthroughout your digestive
system.
So if you are somebody who hadsome type of bacterial
overgrowth or other imbalance inyour gut microbiome, then all of
these foods are moving moreslowly through your system.
It could result in a greaterimbalance of those microbes of

(05:10):
those bacteria or whateveryou've got going on in there.
Now, is that going to be thecase for everybody?
No, I'm definitely not sayingthat.
But if you had something, if youhad bloating all the time and
you're like, gosh, I don't knowwhat's going on here, or maybe
you're still feeling bloated,but you're thinking, well, I'm I
know exactly how much I'meating.

(05:30):
I and I know I don't have thatmuch of an appetite.
I don't know what's happening.
You know, keep that in the backof your mind as some part of
this potential equation thatcould be a factor.
Now, two more things that I'vegot for you.
I just want to make a note, andthis will be quite familiar if
you've been with me before, butit's so important to take a look

(05:53):
at the root cause of yourhormone imbalance.
If you're listening to thepodcast because you have
unpredictable periods or youhave totally missing periods,
you have a lot of period pain.
Well, let's figure out what isthe root cause of that and
address that thing.
Now, could a GLP1 um supportyour blood sugar levels?

(06:16):
Sure.
Could it support loweringinflammation, maybe because you
have uh a greater lean mass?
Sure.
But if there's something elseunderneath there, then that's
again an opportunity to uhwhat's the word I'm looking for?
Like bolster your healthjourney, put these good habits
in place while you're on themedication.

(06:38):
And then when you come off ofit, because not all gals or not
all of you will want to take theGLP ones while you're trying to
conceive, you've got those goodpractices in place and you know
what, you know what balancelooks like, you know where
you're headed.

(06:58):
And that transition off of themedication, I mean, let's even
take a step back.
Transition from anything toanything, medication or
otherwise, can be difficult,right?
Understanding what does yourbody want on the one hand, and
what does it need on the otherhand, having somebody to walk

(07:20):
through those changes withunderstand what you do need and
want, or what could be relatedto blood sugar, what could be
related to, you know, anovergrowth of your gut
microbiome or anything else, that can be invaluable.
So that's really all I wanted toshare with you on this episode

(07:43):
today, because GLP1s uh can bereally strategic for those of
you who have weight loss goals.
That's of course something youshould talk about with your
provider.
This is, you know, this is notmedical advice.
But remember that weight lossdoesn't necessarily equal
hormone balance.
You can still have missingperiods or low progesterone, you

(08:05):
can still have estrogendominance, um, even if you're
thin, right?
And taking the medicationdoesn't actually teach you how
you want to eat for yourlong-term hormone health, how
you want to optimize yournutrient intake for pregnancy or
just for optimal health.
So that's where working withsomebody like me, a hormone

(08:27):
coach, a holistic nutritionist, where I can really help you to
examine what's going on andwhere do you want to go from
there?
So a little food for you, oh, alittle food for thought for you
on this Thursday.
If you have any questions, ifyou have any thoughts on this, I
would love to hear what's onyour mind.
You can connect with me onInstagram at I'm underscore

hormonal.
If there is anybody in your lifewho you think might find this
conversation interesting, I'llsay thank you in advance for
sending it her way.
Friendly reminder that all theinformation I share with you on
the podcast here is foreducational purposes only.
It's not meant to be areplacement for medical advice
or diagnosis.
So if you have more specificquestions about GLP1s, right,

(09:13):
make sure that you consult amedical professional.
All right, that being said, thank you again for listening,
and I'll see you on the nextone.
