고린도전서 13장은 많은 사람에게 “사랑장”으로 알려져 있습니다. 결혼식에서 자주 읽히고, 아름다운 시처럼 들리기도 합니다. 그러나 바울은 지금 낭만적인 사랑을 말하고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그는 은사 때문에 서로 비교하고, 자랑하고, 상처 주던 고린도 교회를 향해 말하고 있습니다. 그러므로 13장은 12장과 분리해서 읽으면 안 됩니다. 12장이 “우리는 한 몸입니다”라고 말한다면, 13장은 “그 몸은 사랑으로만 건강하게 움직입니다”라고 말합니다.

First Corinthians 13 is often remembered as “the love chapter.” It is read at weddings and heard almost like a beautiful poem. But Paul is not speaking first about romantic love. He is addressing a church where spiritual gifts had become a source of comparison, boasting, and injury. Chapter 13, then, should not be detached from chapter 12. If chapter 12 says, “We are one body,” chapter 13 says, “That body can only move in health when it moves in love.”

Welcome to another episode of Jubilee Life Coach's
Life Blog.
Today we take a look at 1Corinthians chapter 13.
Now, 1 Corinthians 13 is oftenremembered as the love chapter.
It is read at weddings and heardalmost like a beautiful poem.

(00:27):
But the apostle is not speakingfirst about romantic love.
He's actually addressing achurch where spiritual gifts had
become a source of comparison,boasting and injury.
So chapter thirteen then shouldnot be detached from chapter
twelve.

(00:48):
If chapter twelve says we're onebody, chapter thirteen is saying
that body can only move inhealth when it moves in love.
And the apostle says in 1Corinthians chapter 12, verse
31, and I will show you a stillmore excellent way.

(01:08):
Here the most excellent way isnot the rejection of spiritual
gifts, it is the way by whichgifts are made alive through
love.
But this love is not an abstractvirtue.
Love does not exist merely as anidea, but love has come to us in

(01:29):
the person of Jesus Christ.
So before 1 Corinthians thirteensays love more, it first
whispers in Christ you havealready been loved.
So you see, love is not merely aconcept, love has come to us in
the person of Jesus Christ.

(01:50):
So 1 Corinthians thirteen saysif I have not love, I am a noisy
gong, I am nothing.
So the apostle deliberatelynames some of the most
impressive possibilities in thechurch speaking in tongues,
prophetic powers, deepknowledge, mountain moving

(02:12):
faith, radical generosity, evenbodily sacrifice.
Then he places one conditionover all of it.
But all of those things areexcellent and great and mighty
and powerful, Paul says, butwithout love, without love, the
most beautiful speech becomesjust noise.

(02:33):
Without love, the deepestknowledge does not heal, and
without love even the mostsacrificial service can still
orbit around the self.
It becomes a selfish act.
I am nothing.
This does not mean that ourgifts have no value or that
every effort that we have evermade is meaningless.

(02:53):
No, it means that gifts withoutlove cannot build the body of
Christ.
Gifts may attract attention,love restores souls.
Gifts may display our ability,love displays Christ.
So you see, without love, giftsstop becoming channels that

(03:16):
build others up and becomestages on which that we try to
prove ourselves.
But the Bible says love ispatient and kind, it does not
insist on its own way.
So the apostle does not describelove mainly as a feeling.
He describes love as embodiedaction, patience, kindness,

(03:40):
freedom from envy, freedom fromboasting, humility, honor, self
forgetfulness, and each phraseaddresses the Corinthians actual
wounds.
They were not patient with oneanother, they envied, they
boasted, they behaved rudely toone another, and they saw it at

(04:01):
their own advantage.
So the apostle is not givingthem an abstract ideal of love,
he's naming the concrete shapeof repentance within the
community.
But here we must not miss theorder of the gospel, the order
of the gospel.
First Corinthians thirteenexposes us and that I'm not

(04:24):
patient, I'm not consistentlykind, I envy, I boast, I protect
my own advantage.
And yet precisely there thispassage leads us to Jesus.
Jesus was patient, Jesus waskind, and Jesus did not exalt
himself, Jesus did not seek hisown advantage.

(04:45):
On the cross, Jesus showed us inhis own body what love is.
So therefore, Jesus is notmerely our example of love, he
is the source of love.
When we behold him, we are notsimply crushed by the moral
burden of trying harder.
We're first comforted by thegospel.

(05:07):
This is how the Lord has lovedme.
And then the Spirit begins tolet that received love flow
through our words, attitudes,and relationships.
So you see, love does notabandon truth, love rejoices
with the truth.
Yet we must remember truthwithout love can crush people,

(05:30):
and love without truth cannotheal them.
So in the gospel, truth and lovedo not compete, they complement,
they meet at the cross.
The cross reveals God's truthabout sin and God's love for
sinners.
So Jesus is more than an exampleof love, he is love fulfilled.

(05:53):
We're not saved because we love,but we are formed into people
who love because we have beenalready loved by Christ.
So the apostle says thatprophecy, tongues, and knowledge
will one day pass away, and manythings that feel essential now

(06:15):
will not last forever.
Our roles will pass, ourpositions will pass, human
recognition will pass, and eventhe abilities we once took pride
pride in will pass.
But love will not pass awaybecause love belongs to the life
of God, and that love hasalready come to us in Christ.

(06:38):
So we see dimly now, thereforewe must be humble.
We know in part, therefore weneed grace with one another.
Even when I am convinced that Iam right, I'm still seeing only
in part.
Now this does not mean that weabandon truth, it means that we
hold truth with humility.

(07:01):
The Lord is the one who knowsfully, and we are learners
before Him always.
So now faith, hope, and loveabide, these three, but the
greatest of these is love.
Faith clings to the Christ thatwe do not yet see.

(07:23):
Hope waits for the kingdom notyet fully revealed.
Love pours the life we havereceived from Christ into the
lives of our neighbors now.
And that is why the greatest islove.
Not because faith and hope areunnecessary, but because love is
the visible fruit of faith andhope.

(07:46):
True faith works through love.
True hope refuses to give up onlove.
So you see, 1 Corinthiansthirteen is not merely a chapter
that says love more.
No, it first says you have beenloved.
Love is patient because theLord, Jesus Christ, has been

(08:08):
patient with us.
Love is kind because the Lordhas come to us in kindness.
Love does not seek its own waybecause Christ gave Himself for
us.
The cross is not only thestandard of love, it is the
source of love.
Therefore, love does not cancelgifts, love gives gifts their

(08:30):
life, and love does not despiseknowledge.
Love makes knowledge humble.
Love does not cool zeal, lovemakes zeal endure.
Love does not make the churchsentimental, love makes the
church more truly the body ofChrist.

(08:50):
The Spirit pours into us thelove that we have received from
Christ, and purifies our giftsthrough that love.
So we love because we have beenloved.
Love has come to us in theperson of Jesus Christ, and the
Spirit forms that love in us forthe life of our neighbors.

(09:15):
