1 Corinthians 2:1–16 — Nothing Except Christ Crucified

"For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." — 1 Corinthians 2:2 (NIV)

Paul had just come from Athens. He had stood on the Areopagus, delivered a philosophically sophisticated address, and watched most of his audience walk away (Acts 17:32–34). When he arrived in Corinth, something had crystallized in him. He would not try to out-argue the culture. He would not dazzle them with rhetoric. He came, as he puts it, "in weakness and fear, and with much trembling" (v. 3).

That is a startling admission from the greatest Christian theologian who ever lived. But Paul is not apologizing. He is making a theological point that runs straight through the heart of this entire letter.

The Foolishness That Is Wisdom

Corinth was a city in love with eloquence. Traveling sophists were celebrities. People paid to hear brilliant speeches the way we might pay for a concert. Into that world, Paul walked in with one thing: a crucified Messiah.

From the vantage point of Corinth, this was absurd. And yet Paul says: 

"My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power" (vv. 4–5).

This is not anti-intellectualism. Paul is one of history's most brilliant minds. He is making a point about source and foundation. If the Corinthians came to faith because Paul had out-debated them, their faith would stand on Paul's cleverness. But faith grounded in the Spirit's conviction — faith that has encountered the risen Christ through the proclaimed cross — stands on something no argument can dismantle.

John Stott once described this as a triple weakness: a weak message — Christ crucified — proclaimed by weak preachers full of fear and trembling, received by weak hearers, socially despised by the world. And yet through that triple weakness, God demonstrated his almighty power (Stott, as paraphrased in Woodley, Preaching Today, Christianity Today).

Now Paul had just come fromAthens.

These were people uh who spokeeloquently, and the general
public paid to hear thesebrilliant speeches the way we
might pay for say a concert.
Now into that world, Paul walkedin with just one thing, and that

And yet Paul says, verses fourand five, My message and my

demonstration of the Spirit'spower so that your faith might

A weak messenger, uh weakmessage and a weak audience.
The weak message was in thefirst century anyway, the maybe

even now, the Messiah crucified.
And it was proclaimed by weakpreachers such as Paul, full of
fear and trembling, and it wasreceived by weak hearers, they
were socially despised by theworld.
And yet it was through thistriple weakness that God

(03:41):
demonstrated his almighty power.
So beginning in verse six, Paulopens something breathtaking.
In verse 7, he says, We speak ofGod's secret wisdom, a wisdom
that has been hidden and thatGod destined for uh for our
glory before time began.

We speak of God's secret wisdom.
Now we need to stop on thatphrase.
Destined for our glory beforetime began?
The cross was not a plan B, inother words.
The Messiah dying on the crosswas the sovereign plan of God
from the beginning of time.

(04:23):
Before the ages were set inmotion, God had already decreed
that his glory would be revealedin the weakness of a cross and
that his people would be broughtto glory through it.
And this is why the rulers ofthis age could not see it.
Verse 8.
None of the rulers of this ageunderstood it, for if they had,

(04:46):
they would not have crucifiedthe Lord of glory.
Pilate, Herod, Caiaphas.
These most powerful men in theancient world uh drove the
nails, and in doing so, theyaccomplished the eternal purpose
of God, which was the cross, isnot the defeat of Christ, it is

(05:09):
the victory through which allother victories will flow.
So even though it's translatedas secret, the Greek word is
better rendered as mystery.
Well, Paul is speaking here isnot a secret, an information
that should be kept from people,but rather so profound as such

(05:32):
that this is a long hidden planof God, only unveiled at last in
the person and the work of JesusChrist.
Now, but why do some peopleunderstand it, see it, while
others don't?
Have you ever wondered?
Why do some people respond tothe gospel preaching?

(05:54):
And why do and and some peopledon't?
Well, Paul answers it directlyin verse 14.
The person without the spiritdoes not accept the things that
come from the Spirit of God, butconsiders them foolishness and
cannot understand them becausethey are discerned only through
the Spirit.

(06:16):
Only through the Spirit.
You see, the problem runs deeperthan intellect or moral effort.
What we call the natural person,meaning these are people who are
born into this world apart fromthe regenerating work of the
Holy Spirit.
This natural person is simplyunable to perceive the things of

(06:39):
God.
Not merely unwilling, says Paul.
Unable.
Unable.
Incapable.
You see, without theillumination of the Spirit, the
human mind cannot perceive thetruth of God.
It's not because the evidence isinsufficient, but because the
faculty of spiritual perceptionis dead.

(07:02):
The spirit does not add moreinformation, the spirit simply
restores the capacity to see.
So verse twelve becomes deeplypersonal.
What we have received is not thespirit of the world, but the
spirit who is from God so thatwe may understand what God has
freely given us.

(07:23):
If Christ crucified is notfoolishness to you, but glory,
then the explanation is not thatyou were spiritually perceptive.
No, it is only by God.
By His Spirit opened the eyesthat were once closed.
That is not a reason for pride,but no it is a reason for

(07:48):
worship.
So Paul closes with anastonishing claim in verse 16.
Paul says, We the Christians, wethe saints, we have the mind of
Christ.
Mind of Christ.
He's not saying Christians haveall the answers, no.
He's saying something far moreradical.

(08:10):
Through the indwelling spirit,the people of God have been
given access to the perspectiveof the living Christ Himself.
We can begin to understanddimly, initially, partially
throughout and but really whatGod has prepared for those who
love him.

(08:31):
Tim Keller often made this pointthat the gospel consistently
upends human categories of powerand wisdom.
The cross does not meet ourstandards.
No, it redefines them.
Don't you see?
What looks like failure,according to this world
standards, is actually the veryengine of salvation.

(08:55):
That's what the cross is.
What looks like weakness isomnipotence choosing to stoop to
humble himself.
And when the Spirit opens thatto us, everything changes.
Not just our theology, but ourposture toward suffering,
failure, and the unansweredquestions of our lives.

(09:21):
