(00:20):
In fact, sometimes it's thebravest and smartest thing that
we can do.
It's better to turn and walkslowly in the right direction
than keep running full speed inthe wrong one.
In today's episode, we're goingto explore why pivoting isn't
failure, it's wisdom, and how toknow when it's time to make a
(00:41):
shift.

Today.
We're talking about pivoting andas an entrepreneur.
You are going to pivot in yourbusiness likely many times, and
it's okay.
Sometimes you start off in onedirection and realize that is
(01:25):
not what the market wants, andyou need to pivot.
You need to shift, you need tochange.
Maybe you realize it's not whatyou want.
And so now it's time to change.
So when do you know that it istime to pivot?
Well if you're feeling burnedout and no longer energized by
the path you're on, if you feellike you've created something
(01:49):
that you're dreading, you don'twant to do, and then it no
longer lights your fire, maybethat's a sign.
Now, it could be that you'vecreated a job for yourself
versus a business and that needssome tweaking and not
necessarily a pivot.
So this is where somediscernment needs to come in.
(02:10):
Now, maybe it's you're burnedout and your goal has changed.
Maybe what you are runningtowards, you're no longer
wanting, it no longer fits whoyou are.
It you realize maybe you werechasing after that for a reason
other than it was what youwanted.
So the goal maybe has changed, but you're still chasing this
(02:33):
old goal out of habit or out offear.
Maybe you are succeeding, maybeyou are crushing it, but.
You don't care.
It doesn't feel fulfilling toyou.
It isn't bringing thesatisfaction that you wanted.
Perhaps it's a, it's a time toreflect and decide if we need to
(02:55):
change course.
Maybe you feel this quiet voiceinside.
Saying that something's wrong.
This isn't quite right.
Maybe, maybe it's loud.
Maybe there's a big voice sayinglike, stop warning.
You know, maybe you don't feelaligned with what you're doing.
(03:18):
And if that's the case again, maybe it's time to step back and
look at what you're doing andassess.
Now, what I wanna say with thiswhole idea of pivoting is
sometimes it's not aboutchanging course.
Maybe you need to bring someonein to help.
Maybe you are grinding away anddoing things that don't fill you
(03:39):
up.
For example, maybe you'recreating a podcast and you love
the podcast, but you hate theediting.
Maybe you don't need to changethe podcast.
You just need help.
This is where if somethingdoesn't feel right, instead of
keeping going and running fullsteam ahead when you're not sure
if it's the right thing, this iswhere you need to stop and
(04:03):
reflect.
So I want you to think about it.
What is it that has youhesitating?
Is it we need to tweak somestuff?
Maybe you need help.
You can't see how you can keepgoing at this pace.
You need to bring others on withyou.
Again, it could be this is notyour goal anymore.
(04:26):
You've been running towardssomething and you don't even
really want it, but you feellike if you stop, that's
failure.
And I'm here.
I'm here to share with you.
It's not failure.
If you're learning along the wayand you realize I thought this
was what I wanted, maybe.
You were enticed by the shinyobject syndrome and you thought,
(04:47):
yep, this is the one.
And you realize, this doesn'teven align with me.
Let me tell you a story, of howI felt where I needed to pivot.
I, as I started in the Gatorprogram, I was working in that
connector role and decided Ididn't really like that.
I didn't want to continue inthat role, and I.
(05:11):
Thought I would be, I would gointo the TC program and so I
joined the TC program, was goingthrough it.
I started planning how I couldcreate my podcast to be a funnel
for it.
I had plans for Squad Up Summitlast year of using that to
promote my business.
(05:31):
I had all these plans, but as Iwas going through the program, I
was like, I don't, I don't wannado this.
I don't really like this, butI'm like, here I am.
I paid all this money and I'mmaking all these plans to make
it work.
I have this little list that Icreated my a hundred day
challenge to get this businessup and running, and I even
(05:56):
signed up for an internship forTC work.
And so I just kept going withit.
The more I kept going, the moreI realized.
This is not for me.
I don't like this.
I don't want to do this.
I am not good at this.
Could I get proficient at it?
(06:16):
Absolutely.
But why?
Because I didn't enjoy it.
It wasn't something that reallyused any of my skills, and so I
had to realize that and stop andsay, this is not the path I
wanna be on, and that's okay.
(06:36):
So let's talk about why weresist pivoting.
Because I was in that space, where I felt like if I quit now,
I was just giving up.
It would be one more thing thatmy family watched me try and
fail at.
So big things that I think wehesitate to pivot because of,
(06:59):
number one, fear of failure andfear of wasting time.
Yeah.
There's also that concern aboutwhat other people will think
about us.
That's number two.
Number three, your identity maybe wrapped up in it.
This is what I've always done.
This is who I've always been.
If I change now who I am, I, Iknow that was something for me
(07:23):
with wanting to move away frommedicine.
That's what I've done.
I've done that for 20 years.
So if I'm no longer a PA,there's an identity loss there.
And then the fourth thing that Ithink comes up is I've come this
far.
(07:43):
I can't change now because ofthis thought of the cost.
You know, the, the myth of asunk cost.
You know, we put all our time, all our money, all our energy
into it, right?
I did that with the TC program, and if I quit now, I wasted all
that time, but the truth is, notime is ever wasted if you learn
(08:07):
from it.
If you were taught somethingthrough it.
Pivoting isn't quitting.
It's evolving what I learnedfrom TC Program.
So much.
I learned so much about thepaperwork, the structure, the
organization that was missingfor me.
So it was really beneficial.
I also learned what I'm not goodat, and that was valuable
(08:28):
information.
I know that is not something Iwant to be doing, but before I
was like, oh yeah, I couldtotally do that.
Again.
Could I totally do it?
Could I make it work?
Sure.
But do I want to, no.
And that's okay.
I learned a valuable lesson.
Yes, it cost me some money tolearn that lesson, but at least
(08:48):
I, I know now that's not for me.
What can this pivot look like?
Maybe it is a 180 and a totallynew direction.
Maybe it's just a one degreeshift.
It could be big, like changingyour career path, your business
(09:09):
model, or.
Changing a side hustle oradopting a side hustle.
Maybe it's something small.
Saying no to a project or apartnership that doesn't align
with you or leaving one that nolonger fits what you want.
(09:29):
Maybe it's shifting yourapproach, your mindset or even
the pace at which you're going.
See that pivot doesn't have tobe completely off track.
It could just be, you know what?
I need to slow down in thisseason right now because I was
running so fast that I wasmissing other things.
(09:51):
Maybe you were running at such apace that you are missing family
time and you need to take thatstep back so you have time for
your business as well as timefor your family.
That can be a small shift, asmall pivot.
The last thing that a pivotcould look like is realigning
your actions with your valuesand your vision.
(10:13):
Maybe you lost sight of thatthroughout the process because
you were just so deep in the,the grind of the work.
Again, taking that step back andreevaluating.
Can be very helpful.
Sometimes pivoting doesn't meanstarting over.
It means making a smalladjustment that gets you
(10:35):
realigned with where you aremeant to go.
The last thing I wanted to talkabout regarding pivoting is how
to pivot with purpose.
We've said this a couple oftimes.
Number one, pause and reflect.
Ask yourself this question, isthis still aligned with my
(10:56):
goals, my values, and my seasonof life?
Maybe your goals have changed, maybe because of the season of
life you are in, this is nolonger where you need to be.
So ask yourself, is this stillaligned with my goals and where
I want to be?
Number two, redefine success.
(11:18):
What does success mean to younow, not five years ago now.
I was listening to Ed Mylett'spodcast this week, and his guest
on there, Sahil Bloom, talkedabout one of his college
teammates who went, they went toStanford, played baseball
(11:38):
together, and his friend movedback home, became a high school
coach, baseball coach, and pEteacher, and he was loving his
life, now to some that may notsound like he was successful,
that may sound like he fell backinto an old pattern, but it's
(12:06):
what he wants and it's what heloves doing, and he is lit up by
that.
He gets to spend quality timewith his family.
He gets to be around his parentsand his kids get to be around
their grandparents.
Because of that, for him, thatis successful.
So when, when we look atsuccess, what does it mean for
(12:29):
you?
Not what the world says, notwhat you think you should be
doing, but what would besuccessful for you?
What would be fulfilling foryou?
And work towards that.
Number three, take small stepsin a new direction.
Pivoting does not have to bedramatic, as we've said before.
(12:50):
It can be one small step at atime.
Course correcting by one degreewill change the trajectory of
where you're going by leaps andbounds at the end of the
journey.
It's okay if it's just a smallpivot.
And finally, number four, surround yourself with support.
Find people who have pivoted, who can cheer you on and won't
(13:14):
hold you back with thosenegative thoughts of, are you
sure is that what you'resupposed to be doing?
Use, use that support system.
Also as a sounding board,here's, here's what I'm
thinking.
Here's what I wanna do.
Here's why I feel like this nolonger aligns with what I want
to be doing.
And use that support system forguidance, for advice, for
(13:39):
support.
Sometimes they may offer you aperspective that you didn't
think about and that may helpyou see things differently.
I think having people along thisjourney with you who you can go
to for advice, for support, forcounsel is incredibly important.
(13:59):
And then when you make yourdecision.
They, they don't have to agreewith you, and that's okay, but I
bet you they will still be thereto support you, and that's what
we want.
That's, those are the friends.
Those are the people that wewant in our life.
All right, we're wrapping uptoday.
If you feel that nudge to pivot, trust it.
(14:22):
You don't need to sprint, youdon't need to have it all
figured out.
You just need to be brave enoughto turn.
And again, it could be just aslight turn because walking
slowly in the right directionwill always get you farther than
running fast towards somethingthat's not meant for you.
(14:42):
Alright, friends, you know Ilove some action steps, a little
bit of homework.
I want you to get your journalout and ask yourself this
question, where in your life oryour work do you feel out of
alignment?
And I want you to think aboutthat.
I want you to write that down.
Why do you feel out ofalignment?
What feels wrong about it?
(15:03):
Is it the pace at which you'regoing?
Is it the direction?
Is it because you need help andsupport?
And ask yourself, what's onesmall pivot that I can make to
bring myself in alignment withwhere I'm at.
Alright, friends, that's what Igot for you this week.
