Hey everyone.
(00:24):
I was thinking this week aboutlabels, specifically name tags,
and the names and the labelsthat we give ourselves.
This could be simple things likemama, wife, business owner,
entrepreneur, medicalprofessional, but there are a
(00:44):
lot of labels that we have stuckon ourselves that some are
empowering.
But a lot are these deeper, negative, limiting beliefs that
we have that we've labeledourself with.
For example, perfectionist,procrastinator, not enough,
imposter, bad with money, tooemotional.
(01:06):
Those are some of the labelsthat I know I have on me in
different places.
And it's interesting how we getthese labels and I wanted to
explore how can we change theseinto empowering beliefs and take
off the labels that no longerserve us that we didn't want in
(01:27):
the first place and create anidentity that is moving us
towards our future self.
So that's what we're going totalk about today.
I think back to when I wasdeciding what I wanted to do
with my life and I can see wherethese labels played a huge role
(01:48):
in why I chose what I chose.
When I was Going into college, Iwanted to be a pharmacist and
when I took organic chemistry, Idecided I'm not going to be a
pharmacist.
I'm not good at organicchemistry.
That limiting belief, that labelthat I put on myself, I'm not
(02:09):
good at organic chemistry, whichI did get an A in, so I was
pretty okay at it, but that, that label that I put on myself
changed the trajectory of mycareer.
And because I put that label onmyself, I shifted.
Now, sometimes these are goodthings.
(02:30):
I'm I'm grateful for where I am,what I've accomplished, what
I've done with my career, butit's interesting how these
things can affect us.
And I want us to explore how arethe labels that we have on us,
how are they affecting us?
How are they helping us?
How are they hindering us?
So we're going to talk aboutthat today.
(02:52):
When we think about theselabels, where do they come from?
Sometimes they come fromexperiences where things don't
turn out like the way we hoped.
Maybe organic chemistry wasreally difficult for me.
And so that became a limitingbelief of maybe I'm not smart
enough to be a pharmacist.
(03:13):
That's probably how that allcame about.
Sometimes this is repetitivethoughts that we have.
For example, I'm bad with money.
If we think that often enough, anytime something goes
negatively with money, withfinances, with our budgeting,
our reticular activating systemsays, Oh, I'm paying attention
(03:35):
to that.
You, you say you're bad withmoney and this, this seems to
correlate.
So we're going to bring that toyour attention.
And so it brings it to yourattention and that becomes the
self fulfilling prophecy.
Oh, I'm bad with money.
I missed my budget this monthand whatever that might be.
So sometimes it's a repetitivethought that keeps showing up
and because we repeat it, whatyou think about, you bring about
(03:58):
because we repeat that thought,it becomes our truth.
Not that it is true, but itbecomes our truth.
So that can happen.
Sometimes those labels weacquire from others.
Maybe intentionally, but I thinkmore often than not it's
unintentional.
For example, if you werestruggling with math and someone
(04:21):
said, maybe you're just not amath person.
Not meaning to tell you you, you're not good at math, but It
correlates, right?
You were struggling with math.
I'm not a math person.
And then you adopt that like, you're right.
You're right.
I'm not a math person.
And that becomes a label thatyou put on yourself, whether
(04:42):
it's true or not.
Correct?
When I think back, I was greatat organic chemistry.
Was it difficult for me?
Yes, but I did it and I got agood grade in there.
But the story that I told myselfbecame my reality.
So we have to be careful aboutthe labels that we collect and
we allow others to put on us.
So we want to be careful aboutthat.
(05:03):
Now, thinking about that, let'sflip that.
We can unintentionally Putlabels on others as well.
When I think about how thishappens, I think about a kid.
So let's say mom goes to thestore and runs into a friend and
little Johnny who's three orfour is toddling around behind
(05:25):
her and sees this new person whohe's never met before and hides
behind mom's leg.
And she's like, Oh, Johnny'sjust shy.
And if that happens a couple oftimes, Johnny may adopt that
identity of being shy.
Even though that may have onlybeen certain situations in which
(05:48):
He finds himself being reserved,in every other situation, he's
full of energy and excitementand the life of the party.
But if it, if he hears itenough, he may adopt that
identity that, oh, I'm shy.
So sometimes those things happeninadvertently.
We don't mean to say things thatpeople take personally, but, but
(06:09):
that can happen.
So, we gotta be careful aboutthe words that we say, and what
we imply with those words.
This is something I'm being moremindful about, especially with
my kids, because I want them tobe Empowered.
I want them to have empoweredbeliefs that they can do
anything, they can be anything, they can create anything that
(06:30):
they want to, and so I'mwatching the words that I say to
them.
So as we think about theselabels and we can see how they
impact us, how can we use themto our advantage?
How do we use them wisely?
How can we rewrite our ownidentity and support others as
(06:52):
they are improving themselves.
And as we all step into ourhighest potential, really we can
use these labels as, our futureself calling us is the way I
like to look at it.
One of the things I want us todo this week is take a minute
and write out your labels.
(07:13):
Write down the labels thatyou've put on yourself.
You've heard some of mine.
Not enough, not good with money, procrastinator, imposter, smart,
good at science, great atconnecting, different, different
ones.
Write all of them down.
Write the good ones.
Write the ones that you don'twish you didn't have because I
(07:37):
want you to take that list and Iwant you to ask yourself, is
this label empowering to me oris it limiting to me?
Do I want this label on me or doI want to get rid of it?
And as you go through that list,it's going to be pretty obvious
the ones that are serving youand the ones that aren't serving
(07:58):
you.
So let's take those limitingbeliefs, those Labels that we've
put that no longer serve us,either get rid of them or
rewrite them.
For example, if one is, I'm notconfident, but you want to be
confident and you can seeyourself stepping into that
confidence, maybe you writedown, I'm growing into my
(08:21):
confidence every day.
I'm taking steps each day tobuild my confidence, whatever
that looks like for you.
Those are the statements.
Those are the things that aregoing to move you forward and
help you become who you want tobe.
And this goes into choosing yourfuture identity.
(08:44):
Ask yourself, who do I want tobecome?
And maybe you write down severalidentity statements to reflect
your highest self.
I am someone who followsthrough.
I am a confident speaker.
I am a strong decision maker.
Some of the things that I sayevery morning, or I write down
every morning in my journal, Iam whole, perfect, and complete
(09:07):
just as I am in this moment.
I also, one of the other onesis, I'm great at figuring things
out and I always find the bestsolutions because those are
things that I want to be true, and I want my brain to look for
those things.
Look, you did figure it out.
Oh, you found a great solutionfor this.
(09:28):
And reinforce that positiveaspect versus the negative
things.
So, find those Identitystatements that reflect your
higher self and write them out.
Maybe, maybe those are youraffirmations in the morning that
you're doing on a regular basis.
Maybe it's something that youprint out and you can have
(09:51):
behind your computer, behindyour screen so you can see it on
a regular basis.
Oh, I am someone that followsthrough.
And help it reinforce thebehavior that you want to have.
The third thing that we're goingto talk about in our action
steps is being intentional withhow we're labeling others.
And being mindful of the thingsthat we say so that we're
(10:13):
creating a growth mindset andnot just labeling people as
difficult or lazy.
Ask yourself when you'rethinking about certain people
that maybe you have specificlabels on.
Am I reinforcing this identityin them?
Is my actions and my wordsreinforcing that identity?
(10:36):
And if so, how can I reframethis in a way that encourages
growth instead of stifles it?
I think that's really important.
One thing we can do is challengeourselves, and I will do this as
well.
Find one person in your life whoyou've given a limiting label
to, and shift how you see them.
(10:56):
Change the words, change the,the thoughts that you have about
them to encourage growth andempowerment, and watch how that
changes for you and for them.
I think it could be reallypowerful, so we'll do that
together.
All right, and with that, let'srecap.
So the words that we use matter.
They shape our reality.
(11:17):
They shape our relationships.
They shape the way that we showup in the world.
We have the power to rewrite ourstory, to choose the labels that
align with our highest selvesand to help others rise by
seeing them for their potentialand not just their past.
We have that power, so let's useit wisely.
(11:39):
Key takeaways that I hope yougot today.
The labels that we giveourselves can empower or limit
us.
Same with the labels that wegive others and Sometimes we can
subconsciously reinforce thoselabels in others, and we want to
make sure we're reinforcingthose positive, empowering
(12:02):
labels.
And third, we can rewrite ourfuture.
If there are labels that are nolonger serving us, or have a
negative connotation, we canrewrite those to align with
growth and empower us to moveinto our higher selves.
All right, everyone, that's itfor today, short and sweet on
