Zero to 26.2: My Journey from Couch to Marathon

Welcome to 'Zero to 26.2,' a series documenting my journey from not running for two years to training for a marathon. Inspired by Jesse Itzler's Big Ass Calendar, I'm committing to this year-defining event. Learn about the three principles—creating new habits every quarter, engaging in bi-monthly mini-adventures, and setting a big yearly goal—that led me to this decision. Join me as I train for the Revel Big Cottonwood marathon in 2025 with the Runna app. I’ll share my training progress, review running gear, and discuss my approach to nutrition and hydration. Follow along, get motivated, and share your fitness goals and milestones. Subscribe for weekly updates and support!

Kimberly (00:00):
Hey everyone, and welcome to this series, which
I'm calling zero to 26.2 forthose of you who get it, that's
going from zero to a marathon.
And I wanted to tell you alittle bit about where this idea
came from and why I am doingthis and to invite you along on

(00:21):
this journey with me.
At the beginning of the year, Icame across Jesse Itzler and he
has this product called The BigAss Calendar.
And what it is is a visualrepresentation of your entire
year.
So you basically at thebeginning of the year, lay out

(00:44):
what you want to accomplish thisyear.
Now, this may include yourvacations, your time with
family.
It may include things with workand your entrepreneurial
journey, things that you want toaccomplish this year.
And he talks about three thingsthat he wants you to implement
in this year that he does andencourages you to come along

(01:08):
with him.
And I think it's really cool.
Number one, he encourages youto.
Create a new habit every threemonths.
So every three months you'reimplementing a new habit of some
sort.
Maybe it's health related, maybeyou're not a water drinker, and
so you're like, I'm going tostart drinking two liters of

(01:28):
water per day, at least.
And that's a habit that youcreate in first quarter.
Maybe second quarter you'rethinking, I really want to,
journal regularly, and so I'mgonna make that a habit.
And so quarter two you'refocusing on journaling and so on
and so forth.
So every year you implement fournew habits for the year.

(01:50):
The second thing he encouragesis something he calls Kevin's
rule.
A friend of his does this in hislife and he thought it was
really cool and so he adopted itand it is every two months
having a small mini adventure.
So maybe doing something thatnormally you wouldn't do.
This could be, maybe it'ssigning up for a 5K, maybe it's

(02:13):
going on a a snowshoeing huttrip or something that is small
can be done in a weekend, butthat involves whoever you want.
Maybe it's a family thing thatyou all decide on, and every two
months you're doing that.
And what that does is createthese mini adventures, six of'em

(02:35):
for the year that you otherwisewouldn't have had.
And so as you do this and as youkeep going with this rule,
right?
You're gonna create all thesespecial adventures for you and
your family.
So I think that was really cool.
And then the third thing iscalled a misogi.
And what this is is a yeardefining event.

(02:58):
Something when you look back on2025, what is it?
What is the one big thing thatyou accomplished that year?
What is is that year definingevent for you?
And so this is where zero to26.2 came from because I
decided, I turned 45 this yearand I decided, this is the year

(03:20):
I will run a marathon.
So my misogi, my year definingevent for 2025 will be to run a
marathon.
I've already signed up for it.
I signed up for it this morningand it's part of the Revel
series, which are kind ofdownhill races, which I'm all
about using as much gravity tohelp pull me down that hill as

(03:42):
possible to run I faster.
And the one I'm gonna do is theRevel Big Cottonwood in Salt
Lake City, Utah.
And it is September 13th, 2025.
So I signed up for it thismorning and I signed up for, uh,
a running app to help me train.
And why I'm doing this series isbecause I haven't run in like

(04:07):
two years.
It's been a while since I'verun.
I've been working out andlifting, but I haven't been
running and so it is a bit of achallenge to start from zero and
think about running 26.2 miles.
It is definitely a littleintimidating.

(04:28):
I think I have plenty of time toget there.
Uh, but it's, it's a commitmentand it's a lot of, a lot of
training that I'm gonna have tobe doing, and I felt like
there's no better accountabilitythan putting it on here and no
better, uh, way to just getsupport and encouragement than

(04:49):
having others follow along.
And I want to just put it outthere maybe, maybe there's
others who are like me, who arethinking about running, but
don't really have a plan or apurpose or a reason, or are
scared, maybe not sure where tostart.
And so my goal with this seriesis to bring others on, other

(05:11):
more experienced runners, hearfrom them.
Uh, we will, I'll review my appthat I joined the Runna app that
I joined to see how thattraining process goes.
I've never really done anything, any specific training, other
than printing out a thing thatsays, run three miles this day,
run five miles that day.

(05:33):
This one looks like it will helppace you and, it can adjust your
pacing based on whether you'rehead or behind that curve.
It has plans for strengthtraining as well as mobility
training.
And so we will review that,we'll review different things
that I use for my runs, so my,running vest, my shoes, those

(05:56):
kind of things, I am reallyexcited about it because it is
gonna be a journey and Ianticipate it being difficult,
and I wanted to bring you alongwith it.
We'll do some recaps from theweek.
We'll do updates, milestoneupdates.
Like I said, we'll reviewdifferent things that I'm using

(06:17):
and I would love to hear fromyou guys and see what you use,
what you like, what you don't,why it's also fascinating to, to
hear different perspectives.
I have a couple of goals, as Igo through this.
Number one is to, to make it tothat race and finish.
Number two is to stay healthyand fit throughout, to build my

(06:38):
endurance and to avoid injuries.
So I'll be working a lot on mynutrition because I know that is
huge for me.
Hydration is a big one that Istruggle with on the daily, so
making sure I am staying verywell hydrated is going to be
something I have to implement, one of those habits that I need
to implement.

(06:59):
And then time-wise, I would loveto be around a 10 minute mile.
If I can get close to a nineminute mile, then that would be
amazing.
But my, my goal, my goal reallyis to finish anything faster
than walking is, is like thecherry on top.

(07:19):
Those are some of the thingsthat I'm looking forward to with
this series, and I wouldencourage you to follow along.
Your support is huge.
I love being a part of thesecommunities where you get to
learn from everyone around you,and I wanna be an inspiration to
others and I would love to hearyour own fitness goals.

(07:40):
What are you working on?
Maybe a marathon is like No, Iwill tell you, it's interesting
because there, there wasn'treally ever a desire in my heart
to do this.
But when I started thinkingabout this, this calendar and
what I wanted this year definingevent, this felt like the thing

(08:01):
to do.
I'm very excited about it, soI'd love for you to follow
along.
Please subscribe, share thiswith others, and let's see where
this year goes, I would love tohear if you have a misogi.
what is your year defining eventfor 2025?
Let's see what all we can createand what incredible things we

(08:23):
can do and the impact we canmake in our lives when we do
something big.
I would love to hear from you.

All right, everyone, until nexttime.
