Horticulturist Brenda Shelton defines and discusses practice of horticulture, our interdependence with nature, and why she loves her craft.

Brenda Shelton, a Native Midwesterner, through and through, was raised by Scandinavian immigrant grandparents until she was 16 and graduated from high school. Learning from cherished people who's knowledge went back, orally, for centuries set her on her pathway of becoming a horticulturist and submerging herself in EVERYTHING botanical. She has been employed in various areas of horticulture since birth, being put to good use on her grandparent's farm, by de-tasseling corn and helping to plant tomato seeds in her grandmother's cold frames. Holding multiple degrees, she agrees that Book Learning and Field Experience are BOTH necessary to understanding the complexity and beauty of nature.

You can find her at Sawyer Home and Garden Center in Sawyer, MI.
