(00:07):
Hello, Legacy Builders.
I'm officially a Tennessean, andI'm so excited.
But what I did not account forwas that I thought I already had
a podcast episode coming outthis week.
I did not.
So here is an oldie but agoodie, something from the Movie
Money Mashup that was originallylive on Facebook, and wasn't
(00:27):
released here on the podcast.
I hope that you enjoy thisconversation that I had with my
friend Coach David, and learn alittle bit about the money
lessons you didn't know you werelearning while watching this
Disney movie
Laura (00:41):
Welcome to the Money and
Movie Mashup.
Where your favorite nostalgicfilms meet real life money
lessons.
I'm Laura Sexton here with myfriend, coach David Gibbs, and
we're diving into the.
Iconic movies of the ninetiesand two thousands to unpack what
Hollywood accidentally taught usabout money, mindset, and
meaning.
It's fun.
It's a little nerdy, and we wantyou in on the conversation, so
(01:02):
grab your popcorn and let'sroll.
David Gibbs (01:10):
All right,
everybody, and welcome to
another Movie Money Mashup.
That was my really coolannouncer voice.
It is baseball postseason, soI'm super excited about that.
But today, we're gonna betalking about the movie
Twitches.
This is...
I feel like this is a deep cutthat I...
I'll ask Laura,'cause I hadnever seen this movie before,
(01:30):
and I liked it.
This movie, if you have neverheard of it, it's about two twin
sisters separated at birth, raised in different worlds.
One is rich, one is poor, basically.
They discover on their 21stbirthday that they are not only
related, but also powerfulwitches.
Reunited by fate, they mustlearn to embrace their magical
(01:51):
abilities and work together toprotect their kingdom from the
evil darkness threatening totake over the world.
If you didn't know, the two, witches, the twitches, in this
movie is Tia and Tamera Mowry.
I grew up watching Sister,Sister, so I saw them on there.
That's what I knew and did youknow that there's a sequel to
(02:13):
this movie?
I don't know if I'll be watchingthat, but we'll see.
Laura.
How are you today?
I'm great.
My assistant is here with us.
She's on the floor sitting upand stuff.
Oh, really?
Wow.
I feel like she was just born.
Me too.
She's six months old now.
All right.
So did you watch this moviegrowing up?
(02:35):
'Cause I'd never heard about ituntil this call.
Oh, I loved this movie.
So I was a big Tia and Tamerafan, so when- Twitches came out,
I was like,"Yes." Yes.
I was so excited.
This was my demographic.
It was everything.
It came out in 2005, so I was asenior in high school.
Oh, okay.
I'm older than you.
I forgot.
Are you really?
Well, I'm taller.
But, my wife has taught me thejoy of the Disney original
(03:00):
movie.
Yes.
The Disney Channel originalmovie.
Gotta say it right.
Mm-hmm.
And, I- The DCOM At this momentin my life, we didn't have
cable.
We had, like, an antenna.
So I didn't have the DisneyChannel during this period of
time, so I didn't watch any ofthese.
So Kelly's always pointing outon Disney Plus all these Disney
Channel original movies.
So I didn't have Disney Channelat my house, but I had it at my
(03:21):
dad's house, and I had it at myaunt's house.
So if it was a dad weekend, Icould watch it at my dad's
house.
And if it was not a dad weekend,I made my mom take me to my
aunt's house so we could haveour DCOM night.
So have you seen the sequel?
Twitches Too?
Yeah.
Now It's Personal.
Yes.
That's actually not the, that'snot the title, but yes, Twitches
Too, I have.
(03:42):
Is it good?
It's not as good as the firstone, but I like it.
All right.
Well, let's talk about the firstone.
Tia and Tamera, on their showSister, Sister, find each other
in a department store.
So the fact that that happenedin this movie, I thought was
hysterical, super funny.
You have two very differentmoney personalities.
(04:02):
They came up in totallydifferent households.
Yeah.
One was wealthy and could spendmoney whenever she wanted.
The other one was poor.
They end up in the departmentstores for two very different
reasons.
One is wanting to buy stuff, andthe other one wants to work
there and make money.
So Twitches in and of itself is,like, all of the money lessons
in the very beginning.
Yeah.
So what I wrote down was thatyour different upbringings
(04:22):
obviously will shape your moneybeliefs.
Your money mindset often isinherited, but you can blend
different perspectives to createa balance.
So- Balance.
Isn't that what everybody in thewhole movie is looking for?
Is there a balance between thelight and the dark?
Hmm.
Yeah.
The darkness made me laugh.
(04:43):
And then also, and I'm sorry, which one was which with their
names?
Caitlin- Kits is the rich oneOkay Cameron is the poor one.
Okay.
Okay.
Well, Cameron, that was superfunny'cause, you know, the
guardians are there trying toget the sign on the- store.
We're desperate.
And then, and that, what, andwhat was interesting about that
sequence, in sequence, justlooking at that, is how she goes
(05:06):
in, the poor one, and she'slike,"$600 for this?
Oh, this well-made dress." Yes.
I will talk about it however youwould like for me to talk about
it so that I can get this job.
Yeah.
Yes.
I thought that was pretty funny.
They both come from differentworlds, different upbringing,
but then they find who theytruly are.
And man, how many times has itbeen done that the father's
(05:31):
brother is the bad guy?
How many times has that beendone in movies?
Scar.
Scar was the first one that Isaw.
I mean, it's the first time-Scar I recognized it it- it's
been, it's been done a lot.
Yeah.
And it's like, what is the mom'sscene, and the brother, what is
this?
And I just thought that was kindof weird.
I don't know.
What's with the mom and thebrothers?
Like, so the mom...
Well, in this one, the mom isdesperate.
(05:52):
Her, not only was her husbandkilled, but her children are
gone.
Yeah.
And so I think she was justdesperate for any kind of
comfort, and there wasn't,they're not, like, in a
relationship.
There's, that's not how they'repaired up.
But he is supposed to be herprotector, and so she just,
like- Oh leans on him blindly.
Oh, by the way, my mom iswatching from the beauty parlor,
(06:14):
and she's not excited that we'redoing a movie about witches and-
I'm sorry but they're twitches,Mom.
They're twin w- They're twinwitches.
Go, Twitches.
Go, Twitches.
So, of course, a big thing thatI was thinking about is, yeah-
Whoa, whoa, whoa teamworkmultiplies strength.
Whether you're two sisters,whether you're in a marriage,
whether you're in a partnership, actual partners, what, whatever,
(06:37):
you know, when you are workingtogether, two horses pull 10
times more than one.
Yeah.
That is, that was the thirdthing that I wrote down.
Because, so the whole thing inthe movie- is their power.
When their powers are combined-Yeah they are Captain Planet.
No.
When their powers are combined, they make a bigger impact.
(06:58):
And one of the things, justbecause my whole thing is
legacy, one of the things aboutthis movie that has always,
always, always stuck with me isthat the opposite of love is not
hate- it's indifference, right?
And the thing about love is itcan only multiply.
And that is one of the thingsthey say in this movie is that
love can multiply.
Yeah.
(07:18):
Love doesn't get divided.
It only grows.
And when I went to have mysecond child and I was worried
about,"Am I gonna be able tolove this one enough?" I thought
back to this movie.
I'm like,"Well, love can onlymultiply." And so at each
subsequent child I've understoodmore and more and more how love
actually multiplies.
(07:38):
It magnifies.
It grows.
To battle the darkness.
To battle the darkness.
Yes, absolutely.
Have you seen The Thunderbolts?
Yeah, of course.
We'll have to, I feel like thisis a movie that we need to
discuss.
But, like, that darkness- anddon't push it down.
Don't push it down.
Don't push it down.
Anyway, I watched it, this weekwith my husband.
Yeah let's get, let's go back toTwitches though.
(08:01):
What, now I'm all onThunderbolts now.
Don't- I'm sorry I'm allexcited.
I'm sorry.
Was that your first time seeingit, just real quick?
Yeah, it was.
Yeah.
And I wanna admit something toyou.
I totally thought the mom waswith the brother.
I thought they were together.
How did I- No, they're not.
No.
They're not together.
I thought they were a thing.
No.
So I admit that I watched this,I promise.
But I was- I believe you doingsome housecleaning at the time,
(08:23):
and I just thought- It's- theywere together.
No, it's, the, it's set up to beslightly ambiguous, but they
definitely, they're definitelynot together.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, I want, my next one was,and this has a lot to do with
just keeping things in the darkin general now that we're kinda
talking about that.
Keeping things in the dark ingeneral is don't ignore your
(08:45):
responsibilities.
Did we both- What?
write the same notes?
No.
Oh.
Well, I was working with acouple.
I had some great sessions thisweek.
I'm actually, like, reallyfilled up this week as a coach,
'cause I've had some reallygreat, like, wow, people are
moving forward, and I'm justexcited for them.
It was just all aboutcommunication, and both of them
(09:07):
knowing just what's going on.
Because what we found was whenthey both didn't know what was
going on, then, all of a suddenpeople are randomly showing up
saying,"You owe me money." Youknow?
Yes.
Because we're just pushing away.
We're trying to, just take careof what's in front of us.
But you have to get completelyon the same page, you have to
bring it all out, and you haveto handle things.
(09:29):
So no matter, whether it's notlooking at our money or looking
at, a bill collector or acollection notice, we cannot
ignore these things.
Yep.
No, you're totally right.
The more you ignore something, the just, the bigger it becomes.
It's like the darkness, right?
They're pretending like they'renot gonna pay attention to it,
and it just grows and grows andgrows, and it's taking over more
(09:50):
territory, and it's coming intoCoventry.
And they're like,"Ah." Nobodyaddressed the problem.
You have to address the problemhead-on, and I think that,
avoiding, especially avoidingyour financial issues, it is
just gonna come back and biteyou in the butt.
Yeah.
But- all of these things, everybody, is bring it all out,
and that's including, baggagethat we bring from the way we
(10:12):
grew up, past relationships.
When we're bringing it into anew relationship, even on the
financial side, our hearts areconnected to our money, so we
have to get it all out.
We gotta talk about it.
So my, my next money lesson, abrupt transition here one of
(10:33):
the things about the darkness,right?
The mom was not looking directlyat the brother-in-law.
She was looking past it, tryingto see anything other than the
actual issue that was right infront of her face.
If you look at the guy, he feelsoff.
He feels sketchy.
Like, she knew something wasoff, but she was so desperate
for, any kind of peace, any kindof assurance, that she was
(10:57):
willing to stick with somethingthat didn't feel quite right.
This is not in my notes, butwhat is coming up for me right
now is that, get rich quick, notgonna help you.
Right?
Trying to find anything, anything to hold onto, and
you're like,"Well, I'll just dothis," or,"I'll just do this,"
and you're from thing to thingto thing no strategy, no
clarity, no confidence, noanything.
(11:18):
You're gonna end up puttingyourself in a negative position
where you're gonna have a subparpartner, a subpar team, a subpar
outcome.
We gotta watch out for that andwe have to, especially you and
me as coaches, call it out whenwe see it.
"Hey, this doesn't feel good.
This doesn't feel right.
How can we make adjustments?"Yeah.
(11:39):
I don't know, what do you thinkabout that?
I-'Cause I hadn't thought aboutthis before, just right now.
Okay, great.
Okay.
No, no.
Yeah, I, I have nothing to addto that.
I agree.
I'm sorry, should I havesomething to add?
This was, uh, was not one of mythoughts that I had had out
loud.
(11:59):
Yeah.
Or that I had thought through,so sometimes when I have
thoughts that I haven't thoughtthrough, they come out sideways,
so.
Yeah.
I feel like, yeah, it is clear.
We know what she...
Yeah, what, what she was doingand...
So I'm just thinking about, Idon't know.
I'm, I'm...
First I just wanted to, how canI turn that idea, that wonderful
(12:20):
idea, into practical real-worldexample?
Yeah, don't gamble.
That has nothing to do with whatshe's doing, but that was my
thought, right?
Was the get rich quick idea.
holding onto something that isnot, actually sustainable.
Something, almost ethereal.
Like, I can't actually grasp it.
It's not true.
That's- It's not real.
(12:41):
What's coming to my mind is,like, red flags in a
relationship.
I'm just thinking about that, Imean, there are many ways to
gamble.
On the financial side it's,"Oh,I really wanna start this
business, and we're...
Let's just borrow from yourparents." let's just get this...
We'll put that back in our 401ina second.
You know?
We'll get this going.
The business will be...
And then, oh, uh-oh.
(13:03):
Yeah.
Everything's destroyed.
Somebody told me the other day, they said using your credit card
is like gambling.
Hey, here, use this.
Using your credit card is likegambling because you're just
assuming future monies.
You're assuming you're gonnawin, right?
Yeah.
And what happens if you puteverything on red and it lands
on black?
Yeah.
(13:23):
And, for our Christian folk outthere, I was just telling my mom
this the other day, I'm like, financing in general is telling
God what to do instead ofwaiting on him for what you
need.
Ouch.
That's a good one, sir.
Yeah.
I hope you do a whole podcast onthat one.
Yeah.
And it's true.
We can do that, not just withfinances, but forcing things,
(13:47):
you know, to be the way we wantthem.
it's, putting a square pegthrough a round hole.
So let's see.
What else do I have?
Embracing the differences.
Embrace the differences in...
Everything.
Okay.
Because I...
And it's funny, I feel like I'vebeen talking about this a lot
with couples and podcasts- Mmand things that I've been
(14:09):
talking about.
But, we have the twin sisters, but like we said, they came from
two completely differentbackgrounds.
Right.
They both had somethingdifferent to give.
They both had powers.
They, we got the they have towork together, but we also have
to celebrate and enjoy that theyare not the same person.
Yeah.
That they have their own, experiences, like, like the one,
(14:30):
she was a bit...
It seemed like she knew her realmom and a bit more connected
with the dreams and all that alittle bit more.
So they, they both had theirjourney, and in real life, in
whatever partnership, marriage,or whatever we're in, we're
different.
And of course, if we were allthe same and we didn't change,
it'd be boring.
Oh, actually, have you everheard of that guy on The
Wrangler School?
(14:50):
He was on The Ken Coleman Show.
He was that cowboy guy that- Oh,the cowboy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah was talkingabout- He was on there.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And it's something WranglerSchool.
That's his YouTube.
Yeah.
And I've always thought he wasso cool because he just doesn't
care about the algorithm at all,and what he was saying is, and
this is just talking aboutmarriages, is that, you know,
the first year things are crazy.
You're getting to know eachother, and then maybe three or
(15:11):
four years down the road, youchange because you're both-
Mm-hmm growing and changing.
You're not the same person asyou were at the beginning of
your marriage.
And, and so embracing those, andthen also isn't that fun?
Isn't that great?
You know, some people find thatscary that, oh, you know, my
spouse is gonna keep changing,or they're different from when I
met them.
Right then it gives us a reasonto keep dating them, to keep
(15:34):
learning about them, and to rollwith those changes because it's
cool.
We're on a journey together, andwe're continuing to learn and
relearn each other.
And so, that's just reallyinspiring to me that he said
that,'cause my wife and I, wejust celebrated 11 years.
But, oh, well to take it, so totake it back to Twitches, what
you're saying though, what Ithink is really interesting is
Cameron, who didn't have thebest upbringing, was much more
(15:58):
open to witnessing change andbeing a part of something new,
whereas the one that had a verycomfortable lifestyle was gonna
have to get very uncomfortabledoing something totally new.
Yeah.
And so sometimes when we'relooking at that and we're like,
"Okay, do we wanna change?
Do we not wanna change?" do wewanna stay comfortable?
Because sometimes when we staycomfortable we miss out on a
(16:20):
whole new world ofpossibilities.
In this case, an actual wholenew world of possibilities.
A dimension.
A whole new dimension ofpossibilities.
Which that, that, the sidecouple, they were so funny.
Like, their protectors.
Are those cute.
What are their names?
Artemis and, no, Karsh- Yeah,Karsh is one of them Anderson.
(16:44):
What, what is the girl's name?
Iliana.
Oh, okay.
Iliana.
My favorite part about them wasat the very end when they were
talking, he was like,"You know,I just, I wanna go to a more af-
affordable dimension." And she'slike,"But it's 10 cent wings on
Wednesdays." Oh, yeah.
They've obviously been togetherfor a millennia.
(17:05):
They bicker like they are an oldmarried couple.
Well, they said just 21 yearsthat they've been hanging around
each other just to protect thegirls.
Really?
Yeah.
I thought, I thought so too, butyeah, they've just been together
on and off, he says, for 21years.
Okay.
So.
But it seems like they should'vebeen together for a millennia,
huh?
Yeah, I mean, they seem likethey are, they're meant for each
(17:27):
other.
They are MFEO.
So going back, one of my thingswas that greed, greed is bad,
and it will destroy the legacythat you have set out.
Thanos is chasing wealth in sucha negative way, and that's going
to ruin any legacy that he mighthave left.
(17:47):
He could've been a great king.
And he would've stepped into hisbrother's role, you know, except
he's the one that killed hisbrother, and that makes you a
traitor and you gotta go.
And how did he go 21 yearswithout taking his gloves o-
gloves off?
Did they ever, like, eat somemessy food, like some ribs or
something and he just kept hisgloves on?
(18:07):
No, no.
Never, never a mess, that guy.
He was always the, pristine,always- Yeah if you think about
living like that for 21 years, that you have to keep the gloves
on Well, that's how Elsa had tolive Oh, that's true, but that's
a cartoon.
I actually, and tell me if Imissed it or is this in some fan
(18:28):
fiction, how did he actuallybecome the darkness?
When did that happen?
Just some time before he killedhis brother?
Yeah.
Okay.
So I have another one.
I don't know.
That's a good question.
Yeah.
I was like, I didn't miss that,did he?
Like, when did he become- Well, now I w- now I need to go watch
(18:49):
Twitches Too and make sure itdoesn't show up there.
I'm gonna go watch that againtonight.
Yeah.
He's just- Ah he's just thedarkness now, and that's just
all he does.
One, another thing, believing inyourself, they definitely
struggled in this one, especially, the wealthier one,
'cause she like- Alex I could...
What is it?
Alex.
Okay.
(19:10):
Alex, and, and, ooh, ooh, here'sa, here's a, here's a thing.
Do you know which one is Tia andwhich one is Tamera?
I do when I'm looking at them.
Okay.
Well, I'll explain my pointwhile you're doing that.
But Alex- Okay She definitely, like, it seems like the whole
movie, and they even made a jokeabout it, it's her thing to run
away, you know?
(19:31):
And to step away and not wantingto be uncomfortable.
She just wanted to go and have abirthday party and be happy, you
know?
And, so she definitely...
Even when, when we have bigchallenges in front of us,
failure is not the end of anyconversation.
It's not the end of any day, wejust have to make the next best
step we can.
And what they did in the movieis starting to actually rely on
(19:55):
each other and work together, and that's, you know, formed
also the help and belief intheir self.
Tamera's, Tamera's Cam- no,Tamera's Alex.
She's the rich one, rich.
What?
You wanna watch that?
Okay, great.
Stop yelling at me.
It's not working.
I don't know what to tell you.
Try something else.
Oh, you know what was thefunniest thing is the cows.
(20:17):
I was trying to do it.
I said the cows were super funnywhen their eyes were following
them.
And so are we...
You know, before we go today, are we gonna do the, like, go
Twitches, go Twitches?
Oh, I've already done it once onhere.
(20:37):
Go to Twitter.
Sure.
It's one of my, that's one of myfavorite things, that they just
wanted to put in something thatthe two of them would do, and
they were doing that on theirown outside of the movie, and
the, the director's- Oh, really?
like,"Put that in." Yeah.
Oh, I had no idea.
Yeah.
That is it.
That is a fun fact.
There, there is a fun fact.
All right, my friend.
Any final thoughts on your end?
Sorry.
I'm sorry.
Yeah.
(20:57):
No, no worries.
I thought we had this undercontrol.
We love babies.
Nope.
I have no thoughts now.
None of them.
They're all gone.
Yeah.
That's, I mean, do you remember,I'm just thinking about live TV
in general.
One of the worst things I everseen, Art Linkletter walk with
Walt Disney when Disney Wor-Disneyland opened for the first
(21:18):
time.
You ever seen that?
No.
They, like, put their arm aroundeach other, and they can't get
it right because the cord fromthe microphone is in the way,
and there was just all sorts ofissues.
And so, actually, years later, because that was so bad, they
didn't do the opening of DisneyWorld live because Disneyland
was such a mess on the livething.
And you can watch it live onYouTube, and there was just
(21:40):
mistakes everywhere.
So it's just live TV, folks.
It's live TV.
Yeah.
That's, it, I mean, it is whatit is.
I will tell you that one of thethings, I'm really glad that we
did this movie because I hadn'twatched it yet this, this
season.
My kids are already, like, inSeptember, they were wanting to
watch Halloween Town and otherthings.
(22:01):
And I'm just like,"Go..." Allright, everybody.
Well, that is our live show.
Thanks so much for watching.
Thank you, Laura, for being thebest.
And, yeah, we'll figure out whatwe want to do next time.
Everybody send in your stuff.
And like we said earlier, youcan listen to Laura's podcast.
You can see, listen to olderepisodes, and you can see them
(22:21):
on my YouTube.
All right?
Everybody have a wonderfulweekend.
Bye, guys.
Bye.
