Now what's next? Next up?It's the man up. Next stop the
next step, Take the next step, next up, stop next, next
up? Next? Want to benext? This is next up with Tad
Norfleeten Chris Gordy. Let's see what'snext next next? Here we'll go.
(00:24):
Let's clock back in live from theSports Talk seven ninety Studios Nelson in between
Uptown Park and River Oaks. Bestcity in America, Houston, Texas.
What up? And we are yourhome in Houston Sports here at seven ninety.
Thank you to the Shawn Salisbury Showeach and every weekday morning six to
ten am. Resident quarterback Sean Salisbury, Brian Delima, baseball man that he
(00:44):
is, and Emmanuel does a greatjob in the program and chair for them.
Our crew will take you up untilnoon. New to the station,
New to the show, staying Northfleetis me to my left, Chris Gordy.
There's Connedy McGovern on the other side. And again we thank you so
much for hanging out for just alittle bit. Obviously, Astros in action.
I got off a plane at oneo'clock this morning, tried to catch
(01:06):
some astros late night baseball. Ihad a little turbulence on the plane,
Gordon, what in a good spot? So can't tell that I was locked
in on the ball game. Nonetheless, glad that I am here, Glad
that you guys are here. Astrosback in action. They take the series
over the weekend versus the A's.They dropped game one, kind of boring
game really after the fireworks in thefirst inning. It kind of went and
(01:29):
Jose ed Bray, you who wewill talk a lot about today as well
as Ron del Blanco from Bavaldas willcome up. Kyle Tucker will come up
as well. One hundred days untilthe kickoff of the NFL season. Let's
peruse the NFL landscape, shall we, gentlemen, and see what's going on.
Texans in action this week, Gordy. I think you and I got
together. Somebody from our team willbe over there on Thursday at NLG.
(01:53):
We also have what could be asweep in the Western Conference finals as the
Eastern Conference Finals was a good gamelast night. Boston comes back, they
knocked out the Pacers. All thatbeing said, see he said done,
Gordy. Good morning. How's yourweekend? It's good weekend, nice nice
long Memorial Day weekend. But backat it today, and I'm still pissed
(02:13):
at the at Seattle and the decisionmakers over there for not moving that game
up yesterday and forty first pitch wellat eight forty here, Oh, I'm
saying, I'm coming from the EastCoast. In the East coast, it's
six forty out in the Pacific line. But I'm like, of all days,
a Memorial day when everybody's off, everybody in baseball played earlier yesterday except
for the Mariners and Astros. Theywere the only stupid late game missed opportunity.
(02:38):
And again, like it's knowing everybodyto go to work today, like
you know, everybody's back to thegrind today. So it was just really
stupid to play that game as lateas it was. But yeah, it
was one of those things. Man, it was a rough first inning for
Fromber. He works out of itsettles in. It gives you six strong
and hey, if the bats showup and give him a little run support,
(02:59):
you can win that game yesterday. But you don't. You score two
runs. Now, Welcome back,Jose Bray. You for all of us
who are looking at that game yesterdaysaying what a disaster this could be.
He gets a you know, heputs you on the board, actually drives
in a run that was hard, but nobody else doing much of anything.
Stand and and and that whole howtwo gets a hit but Tucker hitless,
(03:23):
Jordan hitless. Bregman was just ablack hole again. I mean, oh
for four again, continue to batin that four hole and h Jeremy Payana
with the golden sobrero yesterday oh forfour with four strikeouts. The Bryce Miller
was just owning him. So yeah, man, it's one of those nights
where just you couldn't do enough. And what's crazy staying is over the last
(03:43):
nine games, they've alternated win loss, win loss, win loss, win
loss. Now, if they keepthis up, it'll be nice because that
means they'll split with Seattle, andit means you didn't lose any ground,
you didn't gain any ground, andI'll take that. But now, but
you could also view it this wayand go, you have to win out
of your next three in Seattle, and that puts a little bit more pressure
on you. That's where it goes. Ooh, knowing Hunter Brown's pitching one
(04:05):
of those games, I mean,Brown's going to nine, it's a little
bit of a tougher ask but Ijust feel like you gotta do it,
and again, like it's not theend of the world. Like in a
long season, if you just keepalternating win loss, win loss, win
loss. Yeah, you don't gameground, but you don't lose ground.
And in this tight division race whereit is, it's fine, but you
do have to start, you know, if we're gonna climb out of this
(04:28):
hole like we want them to,you gotta start to stack win wins together,
all right, lot to get throughthere, And I do appreciate you
unpacking and doing the scene set. From that standpoint, Astros, let's take
care of this business. Astros currentlysit third in the ao WES twenty four
and thirty on the season. Nowfour in a game, four and a
half games back. Excuse me ofthe Seattle Mariners, who they're obviously chasing
(04:50):
the top of the division. Threemore games remaining versus Seattle eight to forty.
First pitch tonight, you know you'llhave Astros on deck, all the
things from us, your Homa Astrosbaseball at seven ninety I knew what you
were gonna say, and I said, I'm coming back from the East Coast.
Had a chance to see Mama Fleetshe enjoyed her birthday. She sends
her regards to the city of Houston. She asked you to excuse her son
(05:13):
and allow me to do the thing. But everybody at homes in a good
spirit, coming to my Charlotte. All right. But as I'm preparing for
the show, I'm thinking to myself, Gordy is gonna try and sell me
on from ble Valdais, not focusingon the atrocious opening inning. Gordy's gonna
say, but he's settled down well, because you could flip it. At
the end of the day, hegive you six intings. What if I
told you he gave you five shutoutand then the sixth inning he give up
(05:35):
three runs. When you think aboutit, you know, think about this
team over the course of this season. They do not routinely get out of
early jams when it goes ugly, whether it's back, whether it's relief,
whether it was you know, uhholds that now host Brian to bray you
on the back end of relief whenyou know Presley's having his deal. Hater
(05:59):
came a like, I just don'thave confidence in this team that they're going
to turn it around. Should theybe able to? Yeah, I'm talking
about when it goes amiss innings anytwo by the third Inny. How many
games have we seen this year?Gordy, it's a rap. But that's
week sauce if you that's like inthe NBA. A team starts on a
night old run, you call timeout. You're just done. We can't
(06:21):
go back from No. You weregonna walk into my trap, Connor,
you is my witness. You tellus all the time when Anthony Richardson was
healthy in the first half of thatCoat's game over here, NRG, the
Texans were done. The game wasover when they went up fourteen zero.
You have repeatedly said this on theseairwaves. How come the same can't be
said for other sports. There aretimes you got to just more innings to
(06:44):
come to bad and score runs.It changed. It's three to oh.
It's not like they were down toeight nothing, and you have confident,
you have confidence in this team.Who mind you look over the course of
the weekend. I'm doing so now. So over the weekend, they scored
six runs on Friday night, youknow, victory, The next night one
run ale, the next night fiveruns victory, the next night two runs
(07:06):
ale. They don't consistently put ittogether. And here we are well,
but they were for for a stretchthere. I mean, the Bats had
woke it up in Detroit and thenyou know again that they did look like,
you know, they were starting tothey were starting to put it all
together. And now, yeah,it's just it's inconsistencies, and you know,
I think some serious discussions have tobe had about moving Bregman back down.
(07:30):
I don't understand why they slid himup so quickly. The only thing
I can understand is maybe history ofthe player. Oh he's such a good
you know, he's such a goodbatter historically, but we also have to
recognize he's going through a slump. And again, you know, yesterday was
Jake Myers just continues to hit.Jake Myers is betting three hundred this year.
I don't know if you want toput that pressure on him and slide
(07:51):
him up more, but Bregman justcan't continue to hit that spot. We
have a couple of things that Iwant to get to there about some of
those names, and I'm going toborrow a tweet from our very own Adam
J. Wesler, one half ofthe eighteen Bregman in the fourth spot.
The Astros are thirteen and twenty twowhen Bregman's in the fore hole, they're
(08:13):
eleven and seven. When he's everywhereelse in the fourth spot, he's batting
one ninety one, no homers, eight RBIs he goes up to a more
respectable two fifty four with ford dingersand double digit thirteen. RBIs like,
So, you talk a lot aboutthe manager, and I'm teasing, but
I'm also making a bigger point. The manager doesn't matter. You just set
(08:35):
the line up. The analytics guys. How come the analytics guys hadn't told
George Spotter quit putting Bregman at four? Or is that George spotted trying to
assert some level of control. Howdo we explain this because they got all
that information that that gave a fewweeks ago, when when the report came
out that Bregman wasn't happy that hegot sacked, it didn't say we believe
(09:01):
it to be brave. People I'vetalked people, No, I'm not even
talking about how people I've talked tohim said Bregman was not happy that Joe
A. Spot Them moved him downin the lineup. Now, that's on
bregmant, dude, get your heatout of your ass and hit. Maybe
you'd be hitting higher. But Ialso think it was more of a thing
of a spot of trying to youknow, the whole like you don't want
to lose the player. You don'twant to so you you know, Hey,
(09:22):
Breggy, great job. We movedyou six, So you start hitting,
we'll move you back up. Ithought it was quick. What's the
quick? What's wrong with staying downthere getting you know? If he comes
and goes to my mojo's back, okay, but you don't get your mojo
back after two games? Like, yeah, I need to see some more.
And then speaking of some mojo,we'll take some phone calls here,
Gordon, but a guy I wantedto see what his mojo would be use
(09:46):
bray you We're gonna have to spendthe entire next segment on that. Let
me go to the phones. Nowjust do this, shall we seven?
One, three, two and twofast seven ninety as we try and get
back into a routine here on nextup, Gary and Spring good morning,
Hey, good morning guys. Realquick. I don't have a whole lot,
but uh uh my sense on theAstros is and I never ever,
(10:09):
well, I can't say never ever, because now I am thinking that one
person can make a difference in ateam turned around or staying the same thing
and sliding back, then there's oneperson that if he does, if he
doesn't start doing what he's capable ofdoing and done since he's been here,
if he starts, if that everchanges, and he starts kidding like he's
(10:30):
capable of, then then they'll beback in the Pennant race before you can
blink an eye. If he doesn't, if he just kind of slides around
to eight ish to seven dish, then they're not gonna be in the hunt.
Do you have any idea who I'mtalking about? I presume you mean
Alex Bregman. No, No,I think Bregman. He's he's he's in
deep trouble. It's the big guy, the one that that does all the
(10:52):
damage. Can we talk about that? You know what? Gary, And
I'm gonna ask you this, absolutely, who's the astros best player right now?
Now? Last year I think alot of people would have said Jordan.
I probably would have still seen KyleTucker. Because of the amount of
games Ordon missed this year, theteam's best player is Kyle Tucker. Are
we comfortable that about it? Becauseoh yeah, he's he's the best because
(11:15):
he's producing. But if they bothproduce, Tucker and Alvarez both produced at
their peak possibility. Alvarez is themonster that will carry this team into the
playoffs and beyond. But if hedoes it, it doesn't matter. Stay
where we're at at five hundred, and that's the point. We closed the
book on May. This week stand, this weekend is June. Yeah,
(11:37):
Jordon Alvarez has two home runs thismonth. Jordan Alpharez right now is not
lost on He's played in almost everygame. He's healthy. He's just not
where's the pop man, here's thepop? If he's if he's just giving
you typical Yodon Alvarez production. Thisteam's got at least four or five more
wins, especially in all the daysthat you and I talk about they needed
some the mood of those runners aroundthree to two sorry, three to two
(12:01):
losses, four to two losses. My point, those are games where your
un hits a three run over, you win that game like you need to.
You know, all right, let'sdo this on the other side.
We'll keep talking some strolls. Iwant to hear from some people there with
some sound. I think Joey Spotis in here. I want to hear
from from ber Valdez, or atleast hear a highlight from from but he
got himself out of a jam. We'll take some phone calls as well.
(12:22):
Seven one three, two one twofive seven ninety. Comro James your next
up. Sports Talk seven eighty.Next Up continues on your Apple TV.
Listen to Sports Talk seven ninety onany device with our free iHeartRadio app.
Let me try ron I feel cheatsup slightly the other way. First pitch
(12:43):
and up bray you lines this onetoward right center field. Rodriguez racing over
you won't get there. That's downfor a hit, scoring is spires single,
tip goes to third. Jose,I bray you with an RBI single
that the Astros are on the board. It's three to one, Seattle.
Everybody in the dougout is fired up. They are so happy for a Brad
coming through with the clutch right thereand not waiting around. First pitch,
(13:05):
fastball and he ripped it into thegap. Okay, Jose and Bra you
appreciate Robert wore and Steve Sparks.Right there, Jose Brad You returned to
the lineup last night out in Oakland. We know the Astros come up short
game one of a four game series, Game two tonight right here on seven
(13:26):
ninety three to two. Man hasremain atop the al West go look at
this thing again. I saw this. I want to make sure that this
is right. Oh, by theway, hope everybody had a great but
more day weekend. It's I thinkComrade James wants to put a button on
that if we pay tribute to someonehere momentarily. Of course, you know
the reason for the season. Ifyou will, to all of those that
(13:50):
have sacrifice and loss, we appreciateit. We would not be able to
do all of these things without you. So I want to make sure I
get that said. Coming back. There is Jose bray You. He was
down there in the eighth oh yesterdayone for three. You heard the run
score there, Jose abray You isbatting one oh eight. Chris Gordon and
I talked about Alex Bregman being pusheddown into the lineup earlier in the season
(14:18):
and then made his way back upto the four spot again, And was
it too soon. Gordon and Ialso had a conversation about Jose bray You
and where was he at? What'sthis thing called the Florida Complex League?
Where he was at down in WestPalm And now he's gonna go play some
some whatever it was he went in. Then he go to Sugarland. Think
(14:41):
he plays some Triple A and sugarLand and now here he is, he's
back in the bigs. There arethose that will question if Joe was Spotta
and or Dana Brown or whoever elseis making that call today, did they
do this a brai you thing tooquickly? I would probably say, yeah,
(15:03):
leave John Singleton alone. It wasworking well. I get it staying
we d h John Singleton yesterday.Okay, but you still have to brei
you at first base and it wasan absolute rocket hit at him. And
some people are saying, hey,it just takes a nasty hop on that
kind of dirt. Excuse me,And you can't really fall to braid you
(15:24):
for not corralling the baseball. Otherpeople feel like John Singleton would have made
that play. It's not a routineplay, but Singleton is a good enough
first basement he would have feeled thatand potentially kept a run off the board.
Make up your mind whatever you feelabout that, Jose Braier, I
(15:45):
just don't know why they're forcing thisnow again he would one for three,
okay, I don't know. Connor, how about you, Jose Brader?
You good with this? The waythat the lineup when the car came out
last night? You up watching somebaseball? Did you have confidence in the
astros and and how the lineup wasconstructed? I mean I already figured with
(16:07):
him coming back to Triple A,that he was going to come back at
some point, so I figured theywere gonna have to give him a second
chance. I'm okay with it,just I just figured it's it's gotta be
a short leash. It's just it'sweird. So you got your on was
in left, Jake incenter? Weknow Tucks over there and right, so
(16:27):
you d eight Singleton. I don'tknow. Let's take a phone call,
shall we, and we'll continue talkingsome strolls. Comrade James, I hope
you had a good weekend, man. Good morning, Good morning, sir.
And you're a fine young man forgoing to go see your mama.
Thank you. Getting in at oneo'clock one o'clock and now you're back on
(16:52):
doing the show. God bless you, by the way, you guys your
show. You own the ass becauseI do a lot of driving as a
social worker, and I listened toa lot of shows. But you own
him. You are the spot.If you want to know about the astros,
I have a lot of I havea lot of help, my man,
Gordy, I'm certainly call is likeyou. I have a lot of
(17:15):
help around here for sure. Sothank you for the compliment. Yeah.
Now I want to remember Bill Walton. I might might have been the only
person that didn't know he had cancer. I was shocked. Yeah, okay,
I was shocked that he died atseventy one. But I was in
Portland, Oregon in nineteen seventy fourwhen he was drafted. Everybody was real
(17:37):
excited and he was really the firstfor me. He was the first big
man that played like a forward. He could dribble, he could pass,
he can play inside, he hadan outside shot. He was a nightmare.
Now there is something that he didthat still to this day bothers me.
(17:57):
And that was when the Rockets wereplaying the Celtics for the championship.
The Celtics picked up Bill Walton afterhe retired towards the end of the season,
and he was their missing piece. He made critical rebounds that broke the
(18:18):
back of the Rockets. Had it, had the Celtics not picked up Bill
Walton, the Rockets would have takenthat series. And so I I remember
Bill Walton as a fantastic player. He was definitely an iconoclass. He stood
(18:41):
up for things and he was amodern player that we have today back in
nineteen seventy four. So I justwant to honor him a great man.
Conrad James, Well, appreciate thecall. And Connor McGovern, you have
no idea who to hell Bill Waltonas a player? Did you you think
about him? With the tied iedshirts and the promotion of certain legal substances
(19:06):
depending on what state you live inat a light to smoke, so said
substances. You don't remember him asa player, do you, Connor?
Like the highlights, have you doneall that the tribute videos? I mean,
we saw it all yesterday, Butyou don't know anything about Bill Walton's
game, do you not? Besidesthat he was an NBA champion, That's
all I knew about him. Youtalk about a guy that had excellent footwork
(19:27):
when his feet were healthy. Thedemise of his game, and it's similar
to a man in this town.It kind of had a y'all mean thing.
His feet just could not get healthyand get right. But in terms
of how he would play in today'sgame, he'd be perfect for today's game.
He could step out and shoot alittle midi you know what I mean.
(19:48):
He could face to the basket, back to the basket. He was
an excellent facilitator. You could runoffense through him, kind of like we
do with shit gun. He couldpass the basketball. Bill Walton was fantastic.
He's most certainly a Hall of Famerand one of the best college basketball
players that we've ever seen, sono doubt about that. And lastly,
(20:10):
there is another rockets tied to theBill Walton story. What Bill Walton became.
Many people had hoped that would bekind of a ceiling for Ralph Sampson
formerly University of Virginia. I knowRalph very well, so yeah, I
thought about all of those things yesterdayas well. Bill Walton a very good
(20:32):
broadcaster, but he was an excellentplayer in his own right as well.
And just you couldn't wrangle him inlike I tweet a broadcast. I mean
in everyday life, real different, dude. It was funny. We got
a chance to go years ago.I think it was when the National champ
or the Final four was in Atlantaand we were carrying the games at the
time. So I think it wasCompass Media or one of those. They
(20:53):
had like a little gift together fortheir media partners at a at like this
little bar. They had a privateroom reserved. It was a restaurant rather
and uh so it was Jim Gray, who I always associate. It's the
guy who did the decision with Lebron. I know, Jim Graids. Jim
Gray is known for a lot moreless is down with Tom Brady all the
time. That's one of the bestof the radio show with Tom Brady and
(21:15):
all that. But anyway, itwas Jim. It was Jim Gray with
Bill Walton, and they were supposedto just do a quick little Q and
A, you know, for forthe media people and all this. Jim
Gray got one questioning and Bill justwent and when Bill is going oh,
he goes way oh, you know, and then I played for this guy
and he's just going on and itwas like, and he's entertaining as hell.
(21:37):
I mean, the stories are greatand all that, but you can't
they were closing the restaurant. Theyhad to come in and be like,
guys, we're closing, and Bill'sstill going. He's like, oh,
well, you know, and thenand then this guy, oh, Jerry
Garcia, and just going on andon and on. But uh, It's
cool though, to have those typeof moments because I think a lot of
times I was having this conversation overthe weekend with somebody regardless of sport.
(22:00):
And we'll get back to astros onthe other side. I promise we we
Sometime we just take for granted, not just the players, but the story
of the player. These guys andthese young these ladies almost say young ladies,
but some ladys like I'm a grownass woman, stand make sure you
sorry. Uh, these fantastic athletesin their respective sports, the stories,
(22:22):
the background, the how much knowledgeabout basketball related matters do you think a
Bill Walton has. You can sitdown here in the city. I see
ha Keem and Clydedrex love bit atToyota Center all the time. I want
to pull up on them and juststart a conversation and just see what stories
there we share. I'm into thattype of thing. But it's entertained and
nonetheless, and we certainly lost agiant in the game. And I really
(22:45):
thought when they came out with thisreport that NBC is going to be getting
the NBA and they talked about theSunday Night basketball in America, I might
immediately went to Bill Walton would besuper entertaining on that, Like, I
thought that would have been a greatyou know, guy, if you if
you couldn't a Shack and Barkley andbring them over, understood tea. But
I don't disagree with you there oneBaculy, that's out of point. Now
all right, let's do this realquick, Connor. I know we're over.
(23:07):
Let me least acknowledge last night Celticscome back sweep the Pacers one o
five, one oh two. DrewHoliday for the Celtics at point guard was
awesome last night. Who's at DerekWhite hits a dagger three in the corner
over there in that short corner toreally put things from a safe distance.
I never thought Indiana was gonna getback in the game. After Dereck White
(23:30):
hit the back break of three JasonTatum twenty six, thirteen and eight from
Jason Tatum. Uh, and thenyou get some other contributions from Celtics of
course, Jaylen Brown and others. So it looks like Mavericks and action to
night at the American Airlines Center therein downtown Dallas. Timberwolves are in trouble.
I am shocked that the Timberwolves areabout to get swept by the Mavericks.
(23:52):
I thought the timber Wolves would winthat series. But the combination of
Luca Donja and Kyrie Irving, itjust has proven thus far, had to
be too much for Minnesota. Theycan't do anything with either one of those
dudes, and they're doing a greatterm. Excuse me sharing the basketball.
Who's going to be clutched, LucasClode, Kyrie's big shot. So maybe
we'll talk some more NBA tomorrow oncewe have the NBA Finals set. I
(24:15):
see the phone calls. Let's goto La Porte. Jose wants to get
back into uh Jose and Laporte wantsto get back into some Jose of bray
you conversation. So let me slideand go to break come back. We'll
do that, taking your phone callson the Stroke seven five seven ninety stand
Northfleet. It's just a five ChrisCordy, be next up. The next
(24:36):
up mentality on your radio. Everyballerthat you go through prepares you for the
next one. Welcome back to NextUp on Sports Talk seven ninety. He
looked good. I thought he wasin a much better place ballance. I
thought his body moved really well.He double and right center field aggress if
he got on top of off fastball. That was. That was very good
(24:56):
to see. Welcome back into theshow. We're thirty minutes in too.
A Tuesday edition feels like a Mondaycoming off the holiday weekend. Next Up
is the name of the show.New to the station, New to the
show, We appreciate you. Iam at stand Sportsman. He is at
Chris Gordy. You follow us onsocial want you at Sports Talk seven ninety
(25:17):
as well. We are your homefor the Houston Astros. And that was
the Astro skipper Joe A. Spoder, extremely complimentary Gordon. You and I
said this off air, and thepeople know how I feel. I know
you had to step out, butreal quick. For me, I'm not
mad at them for trying to salvage. Whatever this is with jose Air bray
You, it's just happening entirely tooquickly, and quite frankly, Jose airbraid
(25:41):
You doesn't deserve to boot John Singletonout of the spot. I think it's
just an extremely rush. And nowyou got wanted first, and then it
got John Singleton at dh last partfor bray You to come up, they
had the option Joey Lopafido. SoLopes goes back down to TRIPAA and I
thought, like, we talked somuch out the farm system. Give the
young kids a chance to get somemore rips. Why are we forcing a
(26:03):
rushing. It's a Brady situation,Yeah, it was. What was crazy
was we talked about his numbers atthe Florida Complex League. They bring him
up. He doesn't even go toDouble A. He goes immediately Triple A
sugar Land that gets gets activated. What was out on Friday? Plays in
the games in sugar Land Friday andSaturday. Now Friday went oh for three
(26:27):
with a walk, I believe, and then on Saturday went oh for four
with two strikeouts. So he wasbatting zero point zero zero zero in Triple
A. And then the news comesout is he's on a plane and he's
going to join the team in Seattle. And then yesterday we see he's activated
and then boom in the lineup immediately, And I was a little nervous when
(26:48):
I saw they were batting Singleton io. And this was the thing I said
too. I was like, well, the fear was in alternating and every
other day, you remember, theywere like, oh, we're gonna platoon
them. And what did Singleton tellme a few weeks ago? He thought
he was getting better because he wasplaying everything rip, so an opportunity to
still get him some reps as atDH. But I also was like,
looking at that lineup, gone, you got Bregman in the four hole is
(27:11):
struggling, and then you're gonna haveSingleton and a bray you both in the
lineup, where again Singleton's been serviceableat first, but it's not like he's
crutching and at he's betting two thirtyfour. And then you have Josea Bree
in there, who is batting subone hundred. And I'm like, guys,
like you look at this lineup andyou're like, then you're really putting
pressure on the tuckers and yourdon's going, you guys need to pick us up
because we have all these other dudsin the lineup. So I was happy
(27:33):
for him to get the hit hisfirst at batty strikes out. Now it
was a it was a borderline pitchfor strike three. It was it was
one of those that could have easilybeen called a ball angel. Well,
he's he's retired, he's retiring. It just made me think about how off
that that call was. But butno, I mean, you're in a
three nothing game and in the fifthinning, Jose Bray, you just jumps
(27:55):
on a pitch singles the center,it scores Jake Myers, and you're able
to make it a game and getsome runs in. I thought that was
a great moment for him. Butand I saw a lot of this debate
last time on social media. Peopleare going, you know, I saw
like we'll conkle on some people saying, well, you should be rooting for
a party. Why is everybody beingso negative? And most people, the
level hundred people are saying, look, it's not that we don't like it,
(28:17):
it's just that we understand where heis at this point in his career.
Like to assume he's gonna come backand back four hundred and crush home
runs and turn this thing around.I think it's a little naive. It's
unlike it would be great, sure, but I just think from what we've
seen, evidence is not shown thathe's gonna be that guy. So,
you know, if this is Septemberand you want to rush or break you
(28:37):
because we're trying to clinch the division, exact same scenario it was last year,
right cool, I'm down for rushinghim, But when you got another
four months of regular season baseball, why are you're still trying to give opportunities
to guys like John Singleton, LowPaffido and others. It just didn't make
sense to me to do this.Nonetheless, they decided to do it.
And the other part, like ifSingleton was giving you, if every night
(28:59):
Singleton was going out there over fiveor four strikeouts, like, yes,
the urgency would be let's get abreak, you up, see if he
could do any better. I thinkwe're all pretty happy with what John Sicklton
was giving. One large Brian mctaggardof MLB dot Com. This was during
the game yesterday. Jose Breu's twentytwenty four bad there is zero point nine
to nine. He was seven fourseventy one. He ranks three hundred and
(29:23):
thirty six out of three hundred andthirty eight batters that qualify Jose a bra
you has been oh quite frankly,he's in front of Maldonado with the hit,
yes, and then it took himup. I got him over one
hundred, so he's batting one O. Waight. Now the other thing we
didn't even mention. How about thefirst inning, a ball comes right at
him. I brought it for you. And then then there was another one
(29:45):
that was a little bit tougher. But those three runs score because the outs
could have been had prior to that, I said. I heard some people
say that had Singleton been at first, it would have negated those base runners
because he would have made the play. Jose and Laporte, apologies for keep
your whole so long. We thankyou for your support. Man, go
(30:06):
ahead, Uh no worries, guys, Yeah, I agree with you one
hundred percent man to me, andwhat really didn't make sense is bringing them
up, especially when you can facethe Mariners. You know are could be
one of the best starting lineup instarting rotations in the need Uh. And
then you know all the struggles thathe had in minor league and they're going
to throw them up against that typeof pitching. Uh. Didn't make sense
to me whatsoever. The other thingthat that that uh, you know a
(30:30):
lot of players will tell you this. When you're DH is a completely different
mindset. You know, if ifyou're playing every inning year out there playing
defense a lot of times, itgets you more locked in into the game.
And we saw that last year withDizen dis was patching, he was
a much better hitter. And uhand even to that point, you know,
when you when you change the lineuplike that just to accommodate a certain
player that can only play one position, right, Uh, it takes away
(30:52):
from having Dubon, which is ourbest hitter, would runners scoring position.
Uh. Takes away from having somebodyat the bottom of the line up to
in all base for the top ofthe lineup. Uh. And then again
you know you can't you can't makea move and half d d H and
that type of stuff. It justchanged the whole dynamic of the lineup where
you did have something going. Youknow that maybe break is not gonna be
(31:12):
it's not gonna get a guy thathe was before, but at least you
could put other pieces around him tokind of make up for his lack of
production. But you know, justbringing him up like that out of nowhere
and throwing them against the Mariner. You know, this is a very important
series. I mean, I personallydon't think it's a spot up. I
think we got Brown over there, you know, throwing his hands in there.
(31:34):
Maybe he's trying to build up hishis value one way or another.
I'm not really sure, but Ijust don't. It just made no sense
to me whatsoever at all. Likenothing that was done with that situation made
sense appreciated. That's Jose and Laporte. Rice Miller was also damn good.
And Rice Miller was out there.Dal They were lucky you got after him
(31:56):
a few weeks ago, but theystill that was that game you and you
clearly you should have won that game. But last night, I mean,
yeah, he was dealing, butstill like you should have gotten after their
bullpen. You know, it's athree to two game, one run,
you know, get you back inthat thing. Listen. It may sound
disrespectful, I don't mean it thatway. It's just what I've seen the
players do. On the field thisseason. I do not count on them
(32:20):
when they have those innings. Andif you think about it, think about
how the Astro season have gone. They have consistently had these innings where other
teams are putting up runs and theycollapse. And now you got to ask
this thing about from But we'll getinto those pitching because we have updates on
pitching as well that we need todo. Nonetheless, even though Memorial Day
has come and gone, the grillstill works going in there's still cool refreshments
(32:42):
to accompany your barbecue of choice.Yeah, it was a good weekend,
especially watching the Astros one on Sundayout in Oakland and tasted it even better
and joining ice called Crawford Bock fromour friends at Carbox Brewing. The fridge
was locked and stocked and loaded forthe weekend. Hopefully yours was as well,
and hopefully you will be. It'ssome Crawford Bok throughout this week.
It's gonna be some late night gamestonight and tomorrow night, so again,
(33:05):
make sure that fordge is stocked. And then we'll be back at the ballpark
this Friday with the Twins coming totown, and we'll be enjoying some ice
cold Crawford bock from Carbock bring youknow what when you see it, those
Tequilo Sundrise stripes remind you the olddays of the Houston Astros and of course
Carbock browing bird right here in Houston, Texas. Grab you some Crawford boch
for this week, and remember it'sa home run every time Next South continues
(33:29):
it was not happen. Text.Okay, here's Stad north Fleet, Chris
Gordy, it's not happen text.Okay, sports sucks. All right,
we'll get ready to wrap up ourone here on a Tuesday feels just like
a Monday, Stan Northfleet. That'sChris Gordon. Thanks to all of you
that allow us to maintain our statusas you're a home for Houston sports.
Talking a lot of stroves today asthe strolls on the West Coast winning a
(33:53):
series versus the A's which had tohappen two games to one. You know
that. But now Friday, Saturday'sSunday game one of a four game series
versus the Mariners, an important seriesgiven that the Mariners have a four and
a half game lead over the Astrosin the AL West. Game two tonight
some late night baseball eight forty localtime, we'll do first pitch. We
(34:16):
got Astros on deck somewhere around.I said over the weekend, like the
goal should be to split. Istill stand by it. The goal is
to split. You don't want tolose. You lose three out of four,
you lose ground. So again Isaid, it needs to be you
gotta win two these next sears andthese tiebreakers, as was the case last
year, they do turn up andit ends up being a thing. The
(34:37):
Astros win the division last year becauseof some tie breakers, and so yeah,
I get it one to one sixtytwo, but we also got to
keep it in perspective. Let's takeyour phone calls as we continue talking.
Some Stros here seven one three, two, one two five seven ninety.
Before I go to you tie there'ssomething and I was on my doing my
(35:00):
deal, Gord. I know itpisses you off when I do this sometimes,
but every time I see another reportbecause I remember our conversations, most
of them Chandler Ron Heystaan Astros Twitter. Both Christian Xavier and her Ze Kitty
are getting images on their forearms today. Jeorge Spotter said yesterday more information forthcoming.
(35:28):
So as soon as you get godlike Blanco back off suspension, and
this has been seemingly the case allyear, the starters are not staying healthy.
Starters can't be in the rotation andorder playing like crap from Beavdez going
rogues on and light, joseir keytand Christian Javier going to the il retroactive
(35:49):
for Avier thoughts goring we're gonna see. I mean, we don't. I
can't make assumptions where we don't.This about jozer Katie. He was getting
that start sugar Land Friday night. The consensus was that was going to be
his last rehab start and he wasgonna get called back up to the big
(36:10):
leagues this week and make his seasondebut. Leaves in the fourth inning night
pitched well in that outing. Itpitched three and two thirds innings, give
a one run off, four hitswith three strikeouts, no walks. So
if our Key was grooving, hewas looking really good, but obviously felt
something and came out of the game. So I haven't seen anything really updating
on what's going on with his forum, so we're gonna find that out today.
(36:34):
The Javier went also interesting because hewas supposed to throw a bullpen on
Saturday, did not throw. Wasslated to go likely today. Obviously he's
gonna miss that start and he's beenput on the il. But as Joe
Spot said Saturday, he's he saidhe's listed to in his day to day.
So again today is big with thisimaging on. What is the severity
(36:54):
here? Is it just general soreness? Is this just something world just side
Larner Kidi for a couple of weeks, this is why Mobby or a couple
of days. No, no,no, no, I know you like
to assume the word no, that'snot true. I like to assume what
they show me. Every time theytold me Christian Hovey had a creak in
his neck and he hadn't pitched wortha damn since he came back with his
(37:16):
neck being tight. So anything thatthey said against Oakland, it's the A's.
I'm talking about a real baseball team, like you want them to get
credit for going to Mexico baseball teamMexico City versus Colorado Rocket is they're off.
With Javel Ward's six shutout innings ina win over Oakland, I do
not believe them when they tell usabout injuries and not in the two seasons
(37:38):
I've been here. Tell me thetimes the majority of the time, they're
going to be they're going to bea little big cooy in how they go
about. Just tell me what's happening, Bro, that's it. We'll find
out again, and will it bea disaster? Hit the panic button?
(38:00):
If you lose both of them forseveral weeks a little bit. I mean
r Kinny never had so I'm notyes, a pushback a couple of weeks
is that? That's that If youlose Javier for any significant amount of time,
that one's gonna sting because you justdon't have an obvious you know.
And there's a reason we don't.Don't get me started on my arm insurance.
Let's go to the phone last nowgetting close to they all star break,
(38:22):
Luis Scarcia, but you will stopthis time clear late. Let's get
in here, bro, talk somestrokes. Yeah, isn't, as you
guys know, in any sport,I don't care what it is. There's
a there's a point in time wherepush comes to shove. It used to
be the astrocent it's called intangibles. Now yesterday and so many games yesterday.
Of course what's his name got ahit, and he gets a hit,
(38:45):
but he hits into a double play. When there's minutes scoring position, he
hit into a double play. Thenext time he comes up he gets a
hit. Well, that's great, but only it didn't matter because it wasn't
nobody on base at that time.My point in saying that is this,
there's a tangibles. You take MichaelJordan all the way back to Michael Jordan.
Any sport you want the quarterback, what's his name? Perfect for the
(39:07):
Chiefs, anybody you want to namein any sport. They can take over
a game on their shoulders, aone man a one man army when it
counts. It's calling intangible. Youcan't do it for the whole game.
You can't do it for nine inningsor four quarters or three sets. In
a tennis match, it comes ina match point or a championship point.
(39:29):
There's something that goes through a man'shead when he's a better than average athlete,
that goes through it said it says, hey, I got to do
this right now. He makes aslight adjustment, whatever that adjustment is.
He says, I've done it athousand times. It's automatic. You don't
think about it. You don't sayI got to concentrate, You don't say
I got to focus. You justautomatically do it because you've done it a
(39:52):
thousand times. That's what we're usedto seeing of the astros. They have
lost that. They have come now. Other than a couple of guys and
I know who you you know Chuckerand the and uh and which is?
They talk vague too. Otherwise, they have completely lost that intangible ability.
Yes they get a hit, Yesthey get some home runs, but they
(40:15):
have lost that ability like like PeteRose and all those guys you want to
name them. In any sport, they've always been able to do it when
they need to do it. I'mnot talking about being able to get an
RBI every time you're up there.Appreciate you, ty and clear Lay.
I think you and I have hadthat conversation before. I don't think major
League Baseball fears the astros anymore likethey are what we've said about. Like
(40:39):
we saw the Golden State Warriors stillgood. Still excuse me, still can
be competitive, my voice from theweekend, still can be competitive. But
the fear factor isn't there right now. Maybe they can click in the gar
in June and July. That's asyou say. It's like, yeah,
they don't see they're not fear becausethey're not playing well. But the minute
they start playing well, yes,you go, oh, that's your on
(40:59):
our So there were times last yearwhen the Astros hit lulls that I still
saw pictures afraid of your honts.I don't sense that anymore. It's got
two home runs in the month ofMay. Where's the power? Interesting?
There was another thing I wanted toget to another gentleman that puts on the
(41:20):
orange and blue for our hometown baseballteam. I wanted to see how Ronelle
Blanco would rebound coming back from histen game suspension. The sticky stuff on
the finger and all of that.I wanted to see where would his head
be at? Could he go outthere and get right back on the proverbial
horse and keep pushing through. Rightnow, Rone Blanco is this team's best
(41:44):
picture from a statistical standpoint. Now, I'm still giving the ball to JV
if I got to go play agame for my baseball life. However,
Rone Blanco statistically is kicking ass ina major way. I was happy for
him. Gordy that he got backup, dusted itself off, and went
out there and it's the gym.Yeah you needed that, I mean,
particularly given the opponent with it beingOakland on Saturday, JP Sears just mowed
(42:07):
you down and Arraghetty pitched well enough. You know you lost the game three
to one. If you got anyrun support, you know it would have
been a third straight win for Aarraghetty. So it happens and seem flows ups
and downs of a season, butyou know you're stuck in this groove for
where it's win loss, win loss, win loss, and what does that
tell you? Stand Well, theway this trend has been going these last
(42:27):
week and a half, Astros shouldwin tonight. Now it's hunder Brown on
the mount against Cass. Yeah, yeah, it's a tough ass, but
need those bats to show up.Rono Blanco on Sunday five and zero on
the season, specifically on Sunday seveninnings pitched, allowed just four hits,
including one earned, struck out six, walking just one. Blanco looks damn
(42:49):
good. Bats were alive a littlebit at least put up five runs for
Blanco to protect them there, andwe have that all five runs coming.
The Astros have these innings that it'sjust boom boom boom boom, and then
it goes the other way. Theyhave innings that they give up boom boom,
boom boom, give up runs nonetheless. All right, Astro is out
of town on the West Coast.I back in town. Happy to be
back with you. Hello from theEast coast. Had a chance to go
(43:13):
home and see Mama Fleet. Whenyou think about going home, whether you
have people over at the house thisweekend for Memorial Day, or you're thinking
about fourth for July. We gotFather's Day coming up Juneteenth, all type
of things. When you're thinking aboutyour home and or commercial needs me to
recommend JB. Thibodaux Home and Properties. They are not your average builders.
I assure you. Their blueprints aredesigned to save you time and money wherever
(43:37):
you are in that process. Allright. They will bring your vision to
reality new home construction, residential remodels, as well as commercial bills. Won't
you join me and go into Jbthibodaudot com as Jbthibodau dot com. Now
what's next? Next steps? Nextstop, the next step, Take the
(43:58):
next step, next stop stop nextNext Up. This team wants to be
next. This is Next Up withTad Norfleeten, Chris Gordy. Let's see
what's next next next one hour down, one hour to go back in the
saddle hearing Sports Talk seven ninety studios. We're over here in the Galleria area
(44:21):
the next fifty nine minutes. ChrisGordy and I, along with Conneedy mcgovernent,
do what we can to entertain youas well as inform you. You
are more to welcome to be apart of this thing that we call Next
Up. If you miss our one. Sports seven ninety dot com is where
you go, as well as thefree iHeartRadio app talked a lot of strolls,
squeezed in a little NBA talked there. With the passing of Bill Walton,
(44:42):
and we now have an Eastern Conferencechampion as the Celtics took care of
business last night. As I'm onthe plane coming back, bouncing all over
the place, Thank you God thatI am here. Appreciate the flight crew
for making sure we navigated some stormsin the area. All right, Astros
again in Seattle tonight. But let'spivot because the Texans are back over at
in RG this week. Gordy,as we will have mandatory minicamp. All
(45:07):
right, got guys around. Ithink the media is invited over there on
Thursday goingon, and I will talksome more about that. Also, today
happens to be I saw on socialmedia. One hundred days from today,
Gordy, we get actual NFL regularseason action. I remind you that the
Texans will play the Chicago Bears inthe Hall of Fame game, which is
(45:30):
coming up two months from June first. What is that? Godon? When
it's June first? I should knowmy birthday's on Tuesday versus Saturday. All
right, so two months from thisSaturday we get competitive Football Day. I
mean, it is what it is. It's exhibition. But so we're here.
It just made me think about let'smake sure that we are doing our
(45:52):
due diligence and bringing to people whatis going on in the National Football League
right now. A dude on aflight last night pulled me aside, and
you know, I'm hanging out.I'm trying to get my movie and stuff
ready to go. A dude said, Yo, did you hear about Lamar
Jackson? Did something happened to LamarJackson? I saw you lost a ton
of weight obviously, you know,MVP of the league. You know,
(46:13):
Lamar Jackson said he had dropped twentysome of our pounds. Somebody told me
he got hurt. Is that true? Can we confirm that I had not
looked? Yeah, I figured it'dbe plastered all over the network if the
damn MVP of the league. Hewas at NASCAR over the weekend. He
was in Charlotte at the COCLA sixhundred. I'm just seeing a video of
him shaking hands with NASCAR drivers onSaturday. Yeah, yeah, they were
in Charlotte. Dan Huh, Lamarkicking in a NASA. I want to
(46:36):
say he tweeted the wrong thing andhe was at ND or didn't they have
didn't those guys go to Monaco thenthey have some races this weekend somewhere over
there. They were racist all overall. Right, So that's one thing
that I saw. But as itrelates to the Texans now that the emotion
from the skeledule release and the timesand all of that, Now that picks
(47:00):
have come through, I know,we tease, hey, when are we
going to hear from Stefan Diggs.I know how you feel, Gordy about
the interior defensive line having a stepback in terms of talent. I would
agree with you. I think youwould agree with me based off the last
time we did the show together. The overall Texans roster is healthier. Have
(47:21):
you had time? Have we takentime to fully go What do you expect
from these Texans this year, Gordy, Not necessarily statistics from CJ or tankdal
or whatever, but just overall productionfrom this team. Who are the twenty
twenty four Texans going to be asit pertains to the rest of the league.
(47:43):
Yeah, I think you're gonna seea better You're gonna see a better
offense. Overall respect the old lineis gonna be healthy and better. Obviously
you add you consider Tank Dels. You expect them to get better in your
two Even if Nico Collins doesn't getbetter this year, he got better last
year. So if he just repeatswhat he did last year, that's great.
You'll take that. Dalton Schultz, you know, another year older,
(48:06):
but you expect him to still beproductive. In the addition of Stefon Diggs
and c J. Stroud, youexpect he'll take another step in his development.
He's not going to regress you hope. So, yeah, offense should
be even better, especially with theaddition of Joe Mixon, a more consistent
run game, a little bit morebalanced. You know. The defense is
interesting because I feel like you loseStephen Nelson, if you lose Derek Stingley
(48:28):
at all for any period of time, I think there's some concerns in that
secondary. Jalen Peatree was good, not great last year. Can he get
back to what he was his rookieseason? Linebackers you feel good. I
like the addition of Al Shaier. Then obviously up front Daniel Hunter opposite Will
Anderson, that's an upgrade, nodisrespect to John Grenard, but you got
(48:49):
worse on the interior. So I'mnot ready to just clearly say blanket statement
the defense is going to be betterthis year. We don't know that because
I feel like at one corner spotyou got worse. Into defensive line you
got worse. You upgraded at thedefensive end, you upgraded at linebackers.
So and this is the second yearin this defense. So if the Miko's
(49:09):
defense can for some maybe not puttingwords in his out, just talking through
it. If Jalen Petrie just struggledwith the verbiage and the checks and all
of the things that go into playingdefensive back in its legal playing defense in
de Miko system, perhaps they playmore comfortable and they'll play They're able to
(49:30):
play even faster and swarm more becausethey know, they know how Miko wants
to practice, They know what theverbage is, they know what the checks
are like. And I remember doingthis when al gro came from the New
York Jets and brought the three fourbase defense. It's the first time I
ever stood up. Ask Andy Kalua, anybody else that's had to play defensive
end with your hand in the dirt, and then the first time you have
(49:52):
to stand up like a linebacker butstill have rush responsibilities. It's night and
day. It's like learning how towalk again from a football off standpoint is
weird? It took me. Itwasn't into the second season, Gordon,
because our grow is running an NFLdefense, Our playbook was an NFL defense.
He didn't give a damn whether wewere undergrad or not. Here's the
(50:13):
defense. Learn it. I'm feelinglike Demiko will have in that unit,
they're going to be better this year. They made drastic improvements in the run
defense game from what it was theprevious season. I think they're gonna take
another step. So the talent ondefense and when you know, I don't
know what these rookies are going.I'm not counting on any of these rookies,
(50:35):
not on defense. I'm not Kamarand Lastaa made proved to be a
start nickel in his league and he'sgot to show me, so I'm excluding
him for right now. These otherveteran dudes, the Jeff O Couters and
CJ. Henderson and these other dudes, Jimmy Ward, I need you to
stay healthy and if you can't,then they're gonna have to get some you
know, Mike Ford or MJ.Stores gott to be healthy, Eric Murray,
(50:57):
these all veterans back there like itshould look you mispronounced bad football players.
Yes, they're bad football players. Then on the runs because they're backups.
So wait a minute, you you'rebad at football if you're a backup.
I'm just saying they're not. They'renot. They're not great players.
And that's my concern is Jeff Okuda, he has all great Kansas City didn't
have all great players. Jeff o'cudais a downgrade from what Steven Nelson gave
(51:21):
you a year ago. Desmond Kingcame in as a lifeline and he gave
you some good play down the stretch, But to rely on him for a
whole season at that nickelback spot,I think it's a mistake. And that's
where my hope is Kamari Lasser eitherjumps in and takes that spot full time,
or can you step up and bethat number corner. If Kamar Lassiter
was the same player and he didn'tplay at Georgia and his ass played at
(51:43):
the University of Southern California, youwould not be saying that if he's a
second round pick. That No,even if it was a second round pick,
you wouldn't be saying that. You'resaying, you know, I'm saying,
if they took a corner in thesecond round, the expectation is that
guy, if he's ready to go, let's go. Expectations he should play.
Desmond King is second twenty nine yearsold. You running out the league
like he's thirty five. He wasout of the league last year. I
said, you're trying to run himout the league. The Texan signed him.
(52:07):
They played in one games with desmc king. They second out there,
Why are you trying to run theman off because he was He was
fine for the situation, but theyhave to rely on him for a whole
other season as a starter. Ithink it's a mistake. Well, I
think that's why Kamari last it ishere. I think they envision that's going
to I keep saying he's a nickel. We had that conversation all the time.
We'll see what Demiko wants to dowith it. Jeop, I talked
(52:27):
to you to the expectations. Ifhe plays well throughout training camp week one,
he could be starting opposite Derek Stingley, because he could be. He
has the skills and the traits tobe better than Jeff Okuda and CJ.
Henderson. Physically, he is nowhereclose to what Jeff Okuda is physically.
When you talk about what guys doathletic ability, there's nothing Kamara Lassa that
does with his feet in cleats betterthan Jeff Okudah okay, Well, I
(52:52):
watched it. I was a practicelast week and watch John Mechi burn Jeff
Okuda. He didn't get out dvsin the league. See, now you're
trying to do the thing where youget me pissed and I'm not doing that.
Yeah, there's a reason Jeff coCouter's running with the twos last week.
It's notney good. There's a reasonwhy he's on his third team and
three seasons. The comment was physically, there's nothing lasted or does right now
better than Jeff Okudah backpedal coming outof the back pedal when they able to
(53:15):
be able to tackle. None ofthose things. Now. I like Kamar
and Lassater in the role that Ienvisioned for him. If they think he's
gonna play and start at corner onthe outside opposite of the extingly, I
will tell Nick Cassario respectfully to hisface, I disagree with the pick.
Disagree, and I'm not the onlyone. Google Kamar and Lassater and look
(53:37):
at you know what I saw itearlier today. Oh hopefully I can pull
it up. I'll get it.During the blake, somebody wrote it was
like a post draft reevaluation of thepicks and where they landed. And it
was somebody from Pro Football Focus orsomewhere, and they were like, look
the Kamar last of the pick forHouston. We don't know what that's about.
We liked the player. What areyou for? What the text and
(54:00):
need? What are they like? What are they gonna use in mass Okay,
you drafted a nickel in the secondround. I'm not mad at you,
but you're only doing that if youfeel like the other dudes over there
on the outside are going to beserviceable. I'm not telling you Jeff Akoda
is gonna be you know, anall pro. Don't know, but I'm
(54:20):
just not as how it lasted thatoverall though, the conversation about the defense
and really about the team expectations andwe can get kicking this drive if you
want to. And this is reallywhat my thoughts are. I know you
and I we go all over theplace talking about that. Do you hear
NFL people call these Textans a potentialsuper Bowl team? I don't hear that
(54:42):
a lot here in Houston. Doyou hear do we bring up super Bowl
when we talk about the Textans everyshow? No? But should again?
No, it's because it's sure.I mean, the competition is tough,
the schedule is gonna get tougher. But we've seen some people on the National
Show, some of the talking headsrock them up. Yes, we've seen
them get love, no question. My thing is like when people say super
(55:07):
Bowl and let's start, let's justfocus before we go to break, Let's
just focus on the AFC. Whenyou say super Bowl and the AFC,
give me the teams that they alwayssay, Kansas City of course, Baltimore,
of course, even with Buffalo's talent, talking about a talent, your
depletion, if you will, theystill say Buffalo. And who's the other
(55:30):
one, Oh, Cincinnati. IfBurrow is healthy, it's it's Kansas City,
Baltimore, Cincinnati. Maybe Miami.People are high on them. I
feel like people talk about Miami asmuch as they talk about Houston. Now
I have not seen the updated odds. I'll do that during the break as
well. No wal curts, orwhat does Buffalo look like without Stephan Diggs?
And what does Cleveland look like ifCleveland Watson is fully healthy with the
(55:54):
weapons he yes, see, Idon't like anything. I shouldn't say.
That doesn't sound good. Let's keepdoing this. We on know the side.
I'll tell you what. Let's openup the falls to the people as
well. Well. We'll go aroundthe league, because there is something that
impacts the Houston Texans in a verymajor way, and it's got nothing to
do with their personnel. There's somesmoke in the AFC South A Division opponent
(56:14):
might be getting ready to get substantiallyweaker. We'll continue kicking it around seven
one, three, two, two, five, seven ninety. Next up,
touchdown, Texas coach sark Here. You're next up with Stan Northfleet from
Chris Gordon of Sports Talk seven ninety, Houston's home of Longhort Football. My
goodness, what's going on to thegood people him? Appreciate us, got
(56:36):
us preset number one in the automobilethere. You can also go to Sports
seven ninety dot com, the freeiHeartRadio WAP seven ninety, Home of your
Houston's or home for Houston Sports.Excuse me and uh real Texans talking.
Listen to seven ninety and So I'mcoming home from spending a few days on
the East Coast. Been over ayears since I've been home, So it's
good to see my people. ButI'm listening to NFL chatter when I'm at
(57:00):
home, and people are complementary ofthe Texans on the East Coast. But
I almost get the feeling, Ohthat's a cute little story, but they
aren't really serious about the Super Bowlin Houston, I said, why the
hell not look at the roster?Go watch the tape from Domico in year
(57:21):
one, what he and Strode puttogether. Tell me why why shouldn't they?
We know, like they should bea legitimate Super Bowl contender. Now
I had not looked at the updatedodds. I just don't feel like when
the national conversation happens, I donot hear Houston being mentioned. And I'm
(57:44):
trying to understand why every roster hasholes. So yeah, in Houston,
it may be the defensive tackles aren'twhat they were a year ago, and
for whatever reason, y'all acting likeSteven Nelson is the damn like he's Jim
Thorpe. Stephen Nelson is an averagestarting corn in this league, which is
respect He was a good starting corps. He's an average starting corn in the
(58:05):
league, and now you have abad starting corps. I'm also not having
to pay nor deal with Steven Nelson'stweets. Don't know Steve. I don't
have an issue with Steve. It'snot personal, I promise you my guy's
not. I'm just calling what itis. If they thought Stephen Nelson and
who knows if they resign them asthey get closer to the training camp.
I don't bet that that's gonna happen, given some recent things he's had to
(58:25):
say. I'm social about the headcoach. Okay, we can go around.
I can tell you what's going onin Dallas. We can go look
at Kansas City has holes. Wecan go look at Cincinnati. We can
go talk about Buffalo, which wehave. Why is it that the thought?
Because you said something and I don'twant to put words your mouth,
and then we'll go to the phoneline. Some friends of ours want to
(58:46):
talk to it. My whole overallthought is why aren't the Texans being talked
about as legitimate Super Bowl contenders?Because that's what I see when I add
up all the pieces and you youbrought up the bus part, and we
were talking comparing to Dallas and allthat, but you said something I thought
was cool, bust super Bowl orbus. Dallas is in super Bowl or
(59:10):
bus mode. You said if theTexans don't get to a super Bowl this
year, that it's they'll still becommended. It's no love lostages. Everything
is just cool if they don't viefor a Super Bowl. I didn't say
they had to win it. Thisteam is good enough on paper and what
we've seen from Domico and CJ inone season, this team, the aspirations
(59:34):
absolutely have to be We're getting inthe AFC Championship. I will be disappointed
if they're not there. That's howgood I think they are. Y'all tell
me why I'm tripping, because Iknow you don't agree, gord It.
I just need you to tell mewhy. Why shouldn't the expectation be the
damn Texans are gonna get in thenAFC Championship game, and if you can
get there, you have an opportunityto win a Super Bowl. Well,
I think one thing, You've neverbeen to an AFC Championship game, so
(59:58):
you gotta walk before you run.I'm not already saying Texans are a super
Bowl team because they've never been anAFC championship team. So get there first.
To me show you can even getto an AFC title. Joe Burrow
went zero to sixty bo Cam Newtonwent Cam Newton went zero to sixty boom.
Matt Ryan and the Falcons went zeroto sixty boom. Why can't the
(01:00:20):
Texans do it? I just thinkthe norm has been more Eagles and donald
and get to an SC championship. Then they get to a Super Bowl.
Michael Vick, you know, hegets a couple n The Texans weren't get
there. The Texans were in theDivisional round last year, and they were
one half of football from playing inthe AFC Championship. So now you tell
me, I bring Dolphin shows back, my offensive line gets healthy, I
(01:00:44):
bring in Stepan Diggs. There's JoeMixon in the backfield, second year Bobby
Slow, Demenko, Matt Burke, everybody. So with all of that,
even with a more difficult schedule, and y'all know how I hate that conversation.
Now, it's just unreasonable for them, Gord to if they played one
more half of football better than theyplayed the first, they're in the AFC
(01:01:04):
Championship versus Kansas City. It justdoesn't make sense to me. Yes,
but it still felt like the waythey were playing that game it was gonna
take. It was gonna take somethingbig for them to pull off that upset.
If the thought is crawl before youwalk, I'm making the case they
did crawl last year. Now it'stime to walk. CJ. Strout's second
year CJ's been praised all off season. Damiko Rans you are supposed to be
(01:01:27):
a defensive wonder Ken and you area culture builder. Cool. I'm holding
them at the same standard that we'veseen other men and teams at their respective
positions take their teams in years twoand or three to Super Bowl. I've
seen it happen. I watched Camthem do it in Charlotte to some degree.
I watched Matt Ryan and them doingin Atlanta. We've seen Joe Burrow
(01:01:47):
do it. We saw Jalen Hurts. They lose to the Patriots. No,
it was Brady's first year in Tampa. Jalen Hurts goes against Brady playoff
game, they get smacked. Thenext year, Jalen Hurts a damn second
round pick. My man, bythe way, respect them. Shout out
to Channel View. Jalen Hurts isin the Super Bowl. So I just
(01:02:10):
I'm going to the phone lines becausey'all know I'll get on this and I'll
stay on this for a minute.Killer cal I don't understand. Next up,
hoping you and Georgia my more day. Yeah, I enjoyed it.
Man. Glad you was able togo down there and see Mama Fleet,
cousin Fleets and all the fleet.Hey, man, I agree with you
(01:02:30):
wholeheartedly. But what's puzzling is whenwe asked for the prediction of the record,
and I know records are subjective, you said there will be ten and
seven. I said twelve and fivefor thirteen and four. And the reason
why I said that because I understandlast year they could have won some games
(01:02:51):
they lost, lost some games theywon, but two winnable games was against
Atlanta and Carolina. But that waswhen and CJ went up to the podium
atol slowick. Hey, you know, get me out of this, try
sick and put me on the box. Yeah, let's go, and CJ
took off. But I don't thinkthat we've ever seen a team in the
(01:03:15):
off season in free agency and twodouble ditch, two double digit sack of
defenders, a thousand yard receiver anda thousand yard rusher in the same offseason.
Stephan Diggs is on his way tosixteen hundred yards last year until Joe
Brady changed Josh Allen from a backyardquarterback to a legitimate quarterback, and Stephann
(01:03:39):
Diggs didn't like that because they wereable to just you know, drug plays
up in the dirt and just gofor it. The reason why no,
and go back to the original pointthat he was making. I've heard many
times. I heard Spears and Iheard Ryan Clark. They all said that
Protections are legitimate Super Bowl contend asthey said this several times. And also
(01:04:02):
when you look at the odds youhave in just the AFC, they have
Kansas City, I think it's Baltimore. I'm looking at it right now,
the Buffalo, and I think Buffalo, and then the Texans, and you
got some some people are looking atit like Protections took a greater step because
(01:04:23):
Baltimore lost Clowney and Queen. Let'snot get that twisted. That's they were
two viable pieces to their defense, you know. And when you look at
Buffalo, Buffalo lost a lot onoffense. To me, I look like
I think the Texans is like rightthere for the picking in if you scared
to look at this team and saythat that they're a Super Bowl because you
(01:04:45):
just said they walked, they crawled, but they in the playoffs, they
walked because they won a game.So the next step is the AFC Championship
game. And like you said, they was a half away from winning that
game. And that's what your wireseven hurting everything else everything. Man,
Look, I'm predicting my Super Bowlprediction. Prediction is the Texas in the
(01:05:11):
Lions. Interesting appreciate Killer Cal givingus a shot there. Gordon, do
you understand why I'm at? Iknow Call is with me. Now his
record is different from mine. Ijust the Texans. Just get in the
postseason. If you can win thedivision with ten wins, cool, let's
just get in here. You getin the tournament. Allah, last year,
it's about matchups. You gotta gowin some games. Yeah, I
disagree, Just get in. Ithink you gotta The task is more daunting
(01:05:35):
with the schedule tougher, but yougot to get home field. We know
what a difference to make. TheTexans as good as they played against Cleveland.
I think had every much to doabout them playing that game at home.
I think if they're going to Clevelandto play that game, I don't
know if it's the same result thatplayoff game last year. I think you
need to try to get as manyhome playoff games as you can. The
(01:05:55):
Texans were beating the Baltimore Ravens withoutscoring an offensive touchdown at halftime in Baltimore
last year. But wasn't that moreBaltimore shooting themselves in the foot? I
don't give down. Lamar Jackson wasdoing what he wanted. Of course,
he's the MVP of the league.Of course Lamar is gonna go crazy.
I'm gonna say you had no rungame to speak of. You're missing my
(01:06:17):
point. I'm proving to you thateven if they go on the road,
you gotta put four quarters together orat least be better in the second half.
They were winning the game at halftimein Baltimore, with Steven sim scoring
the only touchdown on special team.Yeah, you scored nine points. I
mean we can say they were winningthe game. They were winning. CJ.
(01:06:38):
Stroud scored zero touchdowns. They werewinning. They will win zero game.
They will win zero games this yearwith CJ. Strout throws zero touchdowns.
What quarterback can throw and it doeshappen on occasion, but with regularity,
nobody's throwing zero touchdowns unless you're LamarJackson on came or somebody. You're
just scoring touch Jalen Hurts, you'rescoring with your legs. I love to
(01:06:59):
see how many games Pat Mahomes isone of Kansas City where he didn't throw
for any touchdowns. That that doesn'tmake sense going it. Oh well,
I'm just saying my point is,you scored nine points. Keep going.
You were in that game, yeahninety seven, you lost twenty five to
nine. I mean it's you areyou gotta score points? And they sucked
on the road. Do it atall? Keep this thing at home if
you get home second on the road. They went to Jacksonville and won.
(01:07:23):
I'm saying in Baltimore, that's oneof the best teams in the league,
Okay, but then put them inCincinnati in the playoffs, put them in
Kansas City in the playoffs, youfeel good about any of those matchups.
I don't let me see the matchups. Let me see the week. What
I'm saying is as much as peoplein around football, and I'm not disputing
what killer Cast said. Yes,I have heard some media pundits acknowledged that
they believe that Taxans can replicate somesemblance of success they've had from a year
(01:07:45):
ago. All I'm saying is,I'm coming back from the East Coast.
I'm looking at Texas Twitter, andit sounds like everybody's just kind of quiet
about the success that this team shouldhave this year. This is a good
bleeping team the Texans on paper inconjunction what we saw a year ago.
This is one of the top talentwise, that's the top ten ten in
(01:08:06):
league talent wise. Can they goput it together? We'll take more phone
calls that one, three, two, one, two, five, seven
eighteen. Who's got next? That'sgreat? What's coming next though? What
do we do next? And who'sgotta take it to the next level?
Next up? Next step back toStanton Northfleets and Chris Gordy. This is
(01:08:30):
next up on Sports Talk seven ninetytwenty six minutes from now, Matt Thomas
and Rossvillrie will bring you to MattThomas Show from New to three. New
to the station, New to theshow. This is next up. Chris
Gordon alongside Connordie McGovern sitting in theproduction and programming chair. We will get
back in the astros here in justa moment. I'm sorry I went on
(01:08:51):
a tangent. I just I geta little bit pissed off when I feel
like people don't provide the appropriate levelof respect to the players that make these
teams and leagues go. And whatDomiico and CJ and others. What they
(01:09:15):
did in year one and changing theculture in the Houston is absolutely remarkable based
on where the organization was when Domikosaid yes, he'll accept the job.
Now, let's fast forward. CJknows what to expect now. I gotta
believe arguably the most injured offensive linein the league last year, legitimately they're
(01:09:41):
going to be healthier this year.I don't think Stefan did is gonna fall
off a cliff. He's played withother quarterbacks, He's played innother NFL cities.
He's been a baller everywhere he's been. Joe Mix is gonna be fine.
He's better than Devin Motor Singletary, all right, that's just that's out
of the ball. I expect Demiko. Whatever the talent deficiencies are on defense,
(01:10:05):
Domiko should be able to make upfor that because I believe in him
and I'm looking at the odds.Gordon, I'll take the call on this
and then we can move in andget back to Stros. I know we
all like talking ab out Stros too. Do I think the Texans are as
good as Kansas City? No?I don't, because they have two dudes
that are just different the head coachand quarterback. Do I think the Texans
(01:10:28):
are as good as Baltimore is rightnow? On paper? Yes? I
think Baltimore is taking a step back. I think Buffalo has taken a step
back. Cincinnati, their roster looksdifferent, Gordon, And we don't know
what Borough is gonna be. AndI hope for the sake I know I
tease you about Borough, but Ido hope for the sake of the game,
because it's good for the game whenyou have quarterbacks operating at peak performance.
(01:10:49):
I hope he is able to returnand he's fine. But do I
think Cincinnati a team that the Texansbe a year ago? Do I think
they're better than the Texans are onpaper? Do not? So the question
is simple, Why aren't the Texans? Why aren't their odds, according to
who I'm looking at fand right now, one, two, three, four,
(01:11:10):
four AFC teams ahead of the Texans. Gordon, do you agree with
that order? Yeah? You do. You think Cincinnati is better than Houston
right now? Tell me why wentfully healthy? Yeah? Didn't tell me
why Tyler Board didn't play for themanymore? No, I know, But
they still got Burrow and Chase wasBurrow on the field when the Texans went
(01:11:32):
into Burrough's house and CJ turned theball over two three times and they still
got a dub. Granted, TylerBoyd didn't drop the ball in end zone,
but so tell me how I hadT. Higgins up there. I
believe T. Higgins was out thatday and R. Chase was playing through
injury. He was hurt, howmany or how many Texans were hurt?
No, it's great. I meanit's great they beat him in a one
(01:11:54):
off, but you know, canyou do it again? It's like it's
like the Texans or the Bengals andthe Chiefs. She's finally got through and
beat the Bengals last year, butpart of that Burrow had been so again
it's I get. I mean,it's to me, it's fifty to fifty.
We could argue left and right over. You know, if the Texans
played the Bengals again, who wins. I'm just saying, like they've at
(01:12:16):
least they got to the mountain, they got to the super Bowl, and
you know the big thing is keepingBurrow healthy. Now we haven't seen Burrow
come back from this, you know, was or whatever elbow someone's hand.
But anyway, we'll see what helooks like. But yeah, I mean
that their defense still has a bunchof dudes, Von Bell and uh Bj
Hill, Sam Hubbard, all thoseguys up front, Trey Hendrickson, So
(01:12:40):
you know, we'll see. Butagain, if you want to put the
the if you want to put theTexans right now, slought them ahead of
the Bengals in a pecking order, shirt go ahead. But I think it's
you could argue either way and somebody, some people are going to be like,
stand, why are you doing this? Why you give people expectations?
Why because the city deserves it.The players that worked their ass off last
year, and the guys like Daltonshows that I returned, they deserve it.
(01:13:01):
Are they hands down better than theDolphins? I think it was a
question. Yeah, because I gotquarterback. He wears number seven. He's
better than their guy. Okay, you went ten and seven last year with
CJ. They won eleven and six. I'm sorry, what playoff game did
they win last year? Well,of course I didn't see them win a
playoff game. I saw CJ putthe beat down on the damn Cleveland Browns
(01:13:24):
over there. Off Kirby, Iwas dead. So yeah, I think
they're better. I think the Texansare better than Miami. I don't know
what the coldest hell in Kansas Citytoo? For that game, it's always
calding against Miami's like we play inone hundred degree humidity. That's why I
said home field, home field isgonna matter this year. It does A
(01:13:45):
friend of the station, friend theshow been holding for a minute, and
then we'll get back. There's someAFC South news which could impact two games
for the Texans in the division.Obviously, Michael and the Heights. What
up done? What's up? Man? If you had a good weekend?
You know, I don't. Idon't think the Texans are getting any I
mean they're getting some love, Ithink because CJ. But I mean the
(01:14:08):
last ten seasons they've only averaged likesix wins the season here wins for the
season. Agree. I agree? And and you know what's gonna have to
happen, Stan is uh, They'regonna have to get when they get to
the super Bowl, then everyone's everyone'susually gonna start perking up, you know,
(01:14:28):
Like I know that. I knowthe like the national media, I
don't know, like Houston sports, like the national media is kind of you
know, dumps on them and theyjust don't even really pay attention because I
mean, dude, we haven't eventhe Jaguars have been to two AC title
games, you know, like weyou know, like we're if you could
argue in the AFC South, well, this is all going to change.
I have a feeling in the future. But the Texans are the worst.
(01:14:50):
They've never been to Super Bowl, never been a title games. So uh,
I think that's gonna change. ButI think that's most million of the
reason why everyone in Houston is kindof not I mean, dude, we're
still scarred as a fan base becauseof the Shawn and the Kansas City game.
And that's just my sauce, man. But I'm excited, and you
know, I don't want to winthe Super Bowl before the season starts.
(01:15:12):
So let's go my man Michael andHeights Gordon and you know what, and
Michael made me think about it justthen. You know what it feels like
to me locally, it feels likeand I've said this on a couple of
different occasions throughout the court. Isaid it all last year. I was
more optimistic than many of you listeningand those talking about the Texans. I
wasn't the most optimistic, but Iwas more than some other folks. It
(01:15:35):
feels like the Houston Texans sports fanis bracing themselves. What if we aren't
as good as we're supposed to be. I can't live like that. I
can't tell you how to fan,But like all this, we're just gonna
be so excited that CJ's here andwe had a good year last year and
nobody saw us coming. Take meback to the Astros Astros? What happened
(01:15:59):
to the Stros twenty sixteen? Gordon? How did the season end? Alcs?
Who do lose to wait a year? No, they didn't get the
they did sixteen sixteen they didn't makethem all right, So seventeen you win
the whole thing. So sixteen ain'don'ta make the playoffs. Seventeen they come
out of nowhere, they get busy, they win a World Series at seventeen,
scandal all the things. What happenedin eighteen Gordon? Uh lost to
(01:16:19):
the Red Sox and the LCS.Question for you, when it was all
the hubbub and coming off for everybody, Da da da da did the city
was the energy the same? Inother words, did we celebrate the astros
as like they can legitimately maybe repeat? We feel the same way about twenty
(01:16:41):
two. Coming into twenty three,we felt like, excuse me coming into
twenty four? Am I saying that? Right? No? Coming into twenty
three off winning get in twenty two, there was no secret, like everybody
knows your tons badass out two daysa badass. We have Kyle Tucker,
y'all, don't we've got from Buthere comes JV back like we dudes,
Jeremy Pinya all the thing? Whydoes it feel different? And I'm trying
(01:17:03):
to go back before the second titleis what I'm trying to get to.
Why does it feel different that theTexans who had success last year? It's
almost like people are still in waitand see mode? Why and I have
to talk about it? Is whatwe do for this cause. Again I'm
just speaking for myself. I thinkif you don't think that they can,
(01:17:23):
you know, if you think theytake a little bit of step back,
like I keep saying, they couldbe really good again. But you're playing
a tougher schedule and you lose acouple of more tough games this year and
you only get to eight wins doesn'tmean you're bad. It just means you
weren't as good as some of theteams you played. You lost in a
couple last second field goals. That'swhat's crazy about the NFL, is it
(01:17:43):
really is. It's so many gamesa week in and week out, or
decide about one or two points andit's like, you know, a last
second field goal, or you scored, but you score too quick. Oh
you gave them the bowl forty eightseconds and they went down and got the
game winning field goal. There's somany moments like that in the NFL.
It's great. It provides parody, but we just keep looking at it.
It's you know, the schedule getstougher this year. Just us all right,
(01:18:04):
I lie, we're out of timebefore I get to the AFC South.
Nugget, y'all hold tight. Onthe other side, I'll share you
with that. Somebody that can putsome points up on the board for an
opponent is in trouble. Could wesee a suspension in the AFC South as
what's what's happening this week? Goingto our mandatory mini camp is upon us.
(01:18:24):
We'll talk some more about that.On the other side, we'll also
get back to some astros. Nextup on Sports Talk seven seven nine.
Excuse me, the legendary KB andme. Next up continues on your computer.
Listen to Sports Talk seven ninety onany device with our free iHeartRadio apps.
(01:18:44):
All right, let's get ready toclose things here at least. Next
up on a Tuesday, Welcome backto work for all of you, thanks
to If everybody's been listening, beencalling in. We're gonna try and get
back in our rhythm as well. And y'all know I get excited and sometime
a conversation get away from it.I do need to clear five couple things.
Gordon, I was mistaken it wastied up. Steven sims Does scored
(01:19:05):
a touchdown on the return for theTexans versus Baltimore in the playoff game.
It was tied at the half tenten. The Texans did have the lead
in the game one at Baltimore tostart last year, Week one, they
were up. I had that schedule. They were up seven to six.
So same opponent, same stadium, different game. My bad. So I
(01:19:29):
want to make sure I get thatclarified. Somebody be all over me on
social My sentiment is still the sameeven at ten ten. The Texans.
To me, they should be loudedmore, and I think we should celebrate
them more. This cautiously optimistic crapI don't understand. I know what I'm
saying. We'll see, though, got to have something to talk about before
the season starts. Okay, Gordon, season, it has started, and
(01:19:50):
we are about to be at theend of this week. We're two months
into the six month baseball season.Astros currently find themselves four and a half
games of the Seattle Manners, andso we face Seattle again tonight. Haunter
Brown is on the maun Astros withthe return of jose Bray You. Let's
(01:20:13):
have that conversation again. Jose Brayyou last night I saw it happening you
and I learned about it when theysaid he was coming up he would meet
them on this West Coast trip.I do not understand other than the dollars
they are throwing at jose A.Bray you that nineteen and a half per
There's no reason of him to beat first base right now. Did he
have an RBI last night? Surehe did appreciate that, but why when
(01:20:36):
you had John Singleton in a groove? Doesn't make sense to me. Still,
feels Rush only kept Singleton in there. He I wonder though, you
know, they said platoons, soI would, you know, if that's
the point, then I would expecttonight we'll probably see Singleton back at first,
and a Braid not playing is whatI would assume, or they could
(01:20:58):
just go full back into you know, goes the platoon word and just a
braid's out there every day. Firstagain, will a braid you be at
first today? I'm saying he willbe, which means are you going d
H? Are you going to dH? John Singleton a game again?
So a Braid's going out there firsta night, we'll see. I think
(01:21:19):
it would be the other way.If they were gonna stand true to what
they said about platoon, I wouldexpect uh Luis Castillo, he's a righty,
so we'll see what they do.Also last night, the other storyline
from von Das Framer goes out forsix innings allow six hits, three earned
(01:21:43):
last two last couple of times we'veseen from but Gordon. He goes rogue
one day, then he comes outthere the next start and he's giving up
three earned runs over six with anawful it's a quality star was in awful.
It was a bad first inning fromthere to my point there Fromber was
good. He gave he kept youin the game, give give you every
chance to win the game. Youpoint out there and just put up a
(01:22:05):
bunch of dudded bats. I'm gettingtired of the And I understand he's trying
to do it and it works sometimes, but it's really frustrating. The first
pitch swinging from Josel Tuvey and it'sa pop pop out, like at least
at least put I understand you're tryingto jump on the first pitch and maybe
that's the mo and scouting report says, this guy's probably going to throw strike
(01:22:28):
first. But like when you popout, it just it makes that anything
so quick. It's the picture youknow. They end up Sometimes it's like
a seven or nine pitch inning andthe pitch your pitcher just got to the
bench and just had a simple water. It's like, oh, I go
back out there again. It's justmind blowing to me how many times this
season we've seen the Astros give upthree, four, seven runs in an
(01:22:51):
inning. And I understand your point, Gordy. The game shouldn't be over
at that point. But what we'veseen, the actual evidence that the players
have demonstrated the game is over. Now, Yes, I understand last night
the Astros put two runs up.What ending was that in the fifth?
Okay, games three to two, still a game, Astros, the Bass
(01:23:14):
don't wake up. Nothing else happensthe rest of the game. Final they
lose to the Mariners. Well, that's just crazy about that ending too?
Was you started paying your strikes outand it's Jake Meyer's single, Singleton's single,
A bray you single one, youknow, you score run, Carottini
crushes one the right the right fieldercatches it. It's a sackfly. Singleton
scores. Then a'l two Ve doubles. Jose Brey goes to third, and
(01:23:38):
you got Kyle Tucker up and Iget it's two outs, but like,
if anybody you want up in thatspot, it's Kyle Tucker in a three
to two game with a runner atthird, and Tucker grounds out the first
if he you know, let's justsay, if Tucker hits a three run
homer there we're talking about. Youtake a five to three lead going to
the bottom of the fifth, andyou probably win that game. Kyle Tucker
(01:23:59):
hit list. Did it walk? You're on hitless? Did walk Alex Bregman
in this four hoole? The numbersare there. Alex Bregman should not be
in the four hoole right now.It hasn't demonstrated that all season. A
spoder get Bregmant out of the four. I presume when we get to the
night and we get the lineup,Bregmant won't be at the four. Maybe
(01:24:19):
I'm wrong about that. Maybe that'swishful thinking. He was hitless in the
Angels series, he had three hitsin the Oakland Series, and no hits
last night. Sometimes we say, right, is just baseball. I don't
know that I can classify last nightas it's just one of one sixty two.
Now, you would think a qualitystart by from Berg and like that
(01:24:42):
would lead to a different result.I don't know. They got some good
pitching on us. I mean, sometimes you have Melowis you you gotta tip
your cap to the Mariners. Yougo, it's a damn good team.
They've been doing this everybody. It'snot like they're doing it to just you.
They've been pitching lights out against everybody. So gotta find a way,
Gotta find a way to split this. Astros Tonight again eight forty local time,
(01:25:03):
give or take first pitch. We'llhave a ton of Astros commentary throughout
the course of today, Astros ondeck, all the thing tenth in the
show we always listen and participate inthat Hunter Brown takes them ound. Tonight
you mentioned Luis Castillo to right handersrespectfully. That'll do it for us.
Connedy McGovern, Chris Gordy, standingNorthfleet in all of you, yes you
