Paramedic to RN

The Way I Perceived Things as a Paramedic Was Sooo Limited (Dec. '24)

This is a continuation of the previous episode focusing on my perceptions vs. reality.

Tune in to hear what I did to start thinking through and planning a career transition to RN that would work for me. I knew early on that I had to do things in a way that worked for me and my family.

Season 2 has wrapped! This bonus episode is a part of a six-part mini-series that will be shared throughout December 2024 as an intermission between seasons.

(00:00):
nursing is critical care, primary care, public health,

(00:04):
psychiatric, that's so much to nursing.
Look that nursing is what I saw.
Well, that wasn't the reality.
So I wanna kind of bring to you guys,
I think which is the hidden gem of nursing,
to if every paramedic that's looking to advance
saw what I saw, you would not hesitate to switch

(00:28):
and you would do it in a hurry.
So let me kind of do a little breakdown
to explain to you on the graduate side of nursing,
how things are broken down.
And I'm not gonna go into elaborate details
because I don't want to be one of these guys
to have a really super long podcast,
but I wanna give you enough information

(00:50):
to where you know how to do a lot of,
you can kind of focus your search.
So I wanna talk about on the grad side of the house,
I'm talking about your MSN,
which is your master's science in nursing,
and your DNP, which is your doctorate in nurse practice.

(01:10):
Now keep in mind, even on the doctorate side,
there's a practice doctorate
and there's an executive leadership doctorate.
And I kind of get into that a little bit later.
But on your MSN, but as far as your practice goes,
you have a title of nurses called advanced practice RNs.

(01:32):
These are your equivalent to your PAs.
We call them APRNs for short,
but the advanced practice RNs
because most states they have prescribing rights,
they have an advanced scope of practice,
they work off the medical model,
which means that they can diagnose and treat.
So the first advanced practice RN

(01:55):
I wanna talk about is nurse practitioners.
Obviously most people know,
but there are different types of nurse practitioners.
For example, you have acute care nurse practitioners,
you have family nurse practitioners,
you have psychiatric nurse practitioners,
neonatal nurse practitioners,
and you have emergency nurse practitioners.
The emergency nurse practitioners

(02:16):
are nothing more than a family nurse practitioner,
but they have a year of emergency medical fellowship.
On your nurse practitioner side,
your patients are usually broken down by population
and that kind of what's decides your expertise.
For example, if you're acute care,
you do pediatrics or you do adults.

(02:38):
Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed this episode.
Listen to the next clip to get the rest.
I wanted to take a moment
and let you really know how much I appreciate your support.
If you've been listening to me for a while,
I'd like to hear from you.
So just leave a comment from time to time,
hit the like button,
just let me know that you really enjoyed the episode.
Make sure you share my content with others
and of course, subscribe and follow me.

(03:01):
My goal is to help as many people as possible
to make the transition from paramedic to RN.
So thanks as always and happy nursing.
