SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
You're listening to
Pow Box Weekly fully automated.
SPEAKER_01 (00:03):
And I'm Jen, your
resident cybersecurity
pessimist, though I preferrealist.
SPEAKER_00 (00:08):
I'm Alex, healthcare
IT guy who still believes we can
fix things.
It's August 7th, 2026, and we'vegot a full slate today.
SPEAKER_01 (00:18):
Let's start with
Aitken County Health.
83,000 people affected by afishing breach.
SPEAKER_00 (00:24):
83,000.
And here's the thing (00:25):
the breach
only lasted one day.
SPEAKER_01 (00:30):
One day.
That's all it takes.
An employee's email gotcompromised, started sending
phishing emails to others, andboom, nearly 100,000 individuals
exposed.
SPEAKER_00 (00:40):
It's a reminder that
speed matters on both sides.
Attackers move fast, detectionhas to move faster.
SPEAKER_01 (00:48):
And this wasn't some
sophisticated zero-day exploit.
It was phishing.
The thing we've been warningabout for how long now?
Decades?
Decades.
Yet here we are.
SPEAKER_00 (00:59):
Speaking of email
security, let's talk about
something more uplifting.
Powbox hosted an industry dinnerin San Francisco last week.
SPEAKER_01 (01:07):
I heard it was
actually fun, which for a
healthcare IT event is sayingsomething.
It was.
SPEAKER_00 (01:13):
We had healthcare IT
professionals, entrepreneurs,
C-suite folks, talked about thePowbox MCP server, AI
governance, GDPR, Powbox Forms, our API documentation, the CLI.
And fun facts about everyone inthe room, which I'm now curious
about.
I'm not revealing anything.
(01:33):
But the real value was gettingpeople in a room together,
learning from each other,building relationships.
SPEAKER_01 (01:40):
That's where the
good ideas happen, not in
another webinar.
SPEAKER_00 (01:44):
Alright, now for one
that honestly made me pause.
The Childcare Resource Centerbreach?
Nine years.
Files were being forwarded to anexternal email account for nine
years.
October 2016 to October 2025.
SPEAKER_01 (02:02):
Nine years.
That's not a breach.
That's a slow leak, no onenoticed.
SPEAKER_00 (02:07):
The filing doesn't
say how many people were
affected, and apparently nomedical information was
involved.
SPEAKER_01 (02:13):
Small comfort.
SPEAKER_00 (02:25):
You need to know
what's leaving your
organization.
SPEAKER_01 (02:28):
Especially when it's
leaving to external accounts.
That's that's day one stuff.
SPEAKER_00 (02:34):
Let's shift to the
regulatory side.
HHS released their 2026 unifiedagenda.
The fun reading I do everysummer.
Two final rules expected inAugust, three more proposals
coming.
But the big one, the securityrule overhaul, that's slipping
to 2027.
SPEAKER_01 (02:53):
Of course it is.
They're calling it the mostsweeping rewrite in 20 years,
and we're still waiting.
SPEAKER_00 (03:00):
To be fair, getting
it right matters more than
getting it fast.
SPEAKER_01 (03:04):
Sure.
But healthcare organizationsneed clarity.
You can't plan your securityposture around maybe next year.
SPEAKER_00 (03:11):
True.
For now, stay close to theproposed rules.
Don't wait for the final versionto start assessing gaps.
Assume the bar is going up,because it is.
Last story.
SPEAKER_01 (03:27):
These guys are
interesting, and by interesting,
I mean terrifying.
SPEAKER_00 (03:31):
They're not going
after software vulnerabilities
first.
They're targeting cloud identityinfrastructure.
SPEAKER_01 (03:38):
Data theft first,
not ransomware first.
They want access to youridentity systems, your SSO, your
cloud admin accounts.
And then they exfiltrate data.
SPEAKER_00 (03:48):
Which means
traditional perimeter defenses
don't help much.
SPEAKER_01 (03:52):
Right.
If they're logging in withlegitimate credentials, your
firewall doesn't care.
Your endpoint protection doesn'tcare.
SPEAKER_00 (03:59):
So what's the play?
SPEAKER_01 (04:01):
Identity monitoring.
Behavioral analytics.
If someone's accessing systemsat 3 a.m.
from a location they've neverbeen, flag it.
SPEAKER_00 (04:09):
MFA everywhere?
SPEAKER_01 (04:11):
MFA everywhere.
And not just SMS-based.
Phishing resistant MFA.
Because these groups are good atbypassing the weak stuff.
SPEAKER_00 (04:19):
Alright, let's bring
it home.
What's the thread connecting allof this?
SPEAKER_01 (04:24):
It's not bad luck.
It's not zero days nobody couldhave predicted.
SPEAKER_00 (04:28):
It's
misconfigurations, blind spots,
gaps that could have beencaught.
SPEAKER_01 (04:34):
Phishing emails that
shouldn't have worked.
Forwarding rules no onemonitored.
Identity systems without propercontrols.
And the good news?
Most of it is fixable.
It's not glamorous work, butit's the work that matters.
SPEAKER_00 (04:47):
Get the basics
right.
Monitor what needs monitoring.
And maybe join us at the nextindustry dinner.
We'll save you a seat.
Thanks for listening to PowboxWeekly.
Stay safe out there.
And check your email forwardingrules.
