Is your dog or cat tracking toxic chemicals into your home? Dr. Randy Aronson, VMD, CCRT, CVA, tackles a critical question from a pet parent about how to safely clean dog paws after walks. He and his co-host, Olivia Sacci, discuss the alarming truth about environmental toxins like glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) and the serious risks of exposure, including liver damage and kidney damage, when pets lick their feet. Learn why simply walking in the neighborhood can lead to your pet absorbing dangerous levels of these chemicals. Dr. Randy shares his recommended holistic pet care solution for effective paw cleaning that also removes irritating pet allergens and supports overall pet health.

This episode dives deeper into the world of integrative veterinary medicine, exploring how chemicals like glyphosate can sneak into your pet's system not just from the grass but potentially through contaminated pet food (kibble ingredients like corn, soy, and rice) and even CBD or hemp products. Dr. Randy also shares an added benefit of the ACV solution—it works as a cleansing agent for pet ears! Dr. Randy and Olivia touch on innovative testing methods, like VDI Lab's fur analysis, for detecting heavy metals and toxins. If you're a conscientious pet parent looking for practical, holistic advice to protect your dog or cat, this video is a must-watch.

SPEAKER_00 (00:07):
Dr.
Andy here with my co-host OliviaSaatchi from the University of
Arizona Veterinary School.

SPEAKER_01 (00:12):
It's nice to see you guys again.
Excited to be here.

SPEAKER_00 (00:15):
Nice to be here.

SPEAKER_01 (00:16):
So uh we have a question from It is going to be
from Alyssa in Nevada, and I'llread it off for you if you want
to.

SPEAKER_00 (00:22):
Please, please.

SPEAKER_01 (00:23):
Okay, so this one is for you, Dr.
Randy.
Wanted to know what yourecommend to clean off our dog's
paws after we walk.
We are in Florida.
I don't know why I said Nevada, and everyone uses toxic
chemicals on their grass.

SPEAKER_00 (00:34):
I think she lives in both places.

SPEAKER_01 (00:35):
Both places, she could be a student.
She could be.
She could be.
Yeah.
Our holistic vet recommended amix of ACV or white vinegar and
water.
So apple cider vinegar.
Is that enough to getglycophosphate and tower
chemicals off?
Or what would you recommend andhow would you apply it?

SPEAKER_00 (00:50):
Well, this is a really, really good question
because we talked about inanother video that we did about
glyphosphate or Roundup.
And we are seeing such higherlevels in our animals,
especially I think I mentionedthat some of the veterin schools
are doing biopsies on their dogsand cats that have passed away,
finding 30 times the amount ofglyphosate or roundup in their

(01:13):
liver.
How's it getting there?
Well, the easiest way is our dogor cat goes out, walks in the
grass or around theneighborhood, and then comes in
and licks its paws.
And it's right there.
It's not going to get absorbedthrough the paw, it's going to
get absorbed through thesaladary and the mucosa in the
mouth.

SPEAKER_01 (01:32):
Exactly.

SPEAKER_00 (01:32):
So that's a real concern.
So the question is like, what dowe do about that?
Well, I'm a huge proponent, likehere in Tucson, we worry a lot
about contact allergy with thedesert.
We have a lot of fungus thatlives here.
We have things that can bereally irritating.
So I'm a huge fan of keeping bythe front door for our dogs or
cats a mixture of Bragg's applecider vinegar, which is

(01:55):
cold-pressed apple cidervinegar, 50-50 and water.
Okay.
And I have it in a littlecontainer.
And I tell my clients, please, when they come in, take just uh
a white gauze pad or cotton andwipe off the bottom of their
feet.

SPEAKER_01 (02:08):
Right.

SPEAKER_00 (02:08):
Because now we will eliminate almost all of the
contact allergens, and I hope itwill get the glyphosphate.
I'm not sure I've not done theresearch on how much it
eliminates, but it's certainlybetter than nothing.

SPEAKER_01 (02:20):
And you said, maybe I'm reading too much into this,
but you said cold pressed.
Is that very specific to getthings off of the pots?

SPEAKER_00 (02:26):
Well, it's actually just a little bit better apple
cider vinegar.
So again, 50-50 apple cidervinegar and water mixed up in a
container.
It's also a really goodcleansing uh agent for the ears.
Okay.
Um I have people use that todrip it in the ears and clean
them as a maintenance kind ofproduct.

SPEAKER_01 (02:43):
Okay, so it's not you can use that for our
allergens, you said, also ourglycophosphates.
Um, and then can you touch onwhy is that so damaging to have
that in our pet systems?

SPEAKER_00 (02:53):
The glyphosphate.
Glyphosphate, well, well, no,because it's, you know, it's a
it's a pesticide and it cancause a lot of liver damage.
It can cause a lot of kidneydamage.
We're not even sure what all itwill do.
In fact, the research is stillout there looking at the city.

SPEAKER_01 (03:05):
Liver and kidney is enough to do that.
It's enough.
It's enough.

SPEAKER_00 (03:08):
So we just don't want it in our pets uh
environment or in their body ifwe can help it.

SPEAKER_01 (03:14):
Right.
And so that's why cleaning isvery important.
I think you're saying it's alsoin some foods, correct?

SPEAKER_00 (03:19):
Well, we're worried that uh some of this
glyphosphate is sneaking intosome of the kibbled pet foods.
Right.
Because they're all picked, youknow, whether they use corn or
wheat or soy, uh rice or whitepotato, all of which you know I
don't like using.
I do know that.
Um but it could be in there.
Uh we also talked earlier inanother video about CBD.
We're worried that some of thehemp products have glyphosphate

(03:41):
in them because hemp is a strongmagnet to draw things out of the
environment.

SPEAKER_01 (03:45):
Aaron Powell That's interesting.
So this is, you know, cominginto this, I didn't know that
glyphosphate was such an issueas someone in veterinary school.
Yep.
It's not really something thatwe've we've discussed yet, but
that's good to know that it'sout there in multiple forms.
And so where we can avoid it, weshould.
So if we can wipe the paws offand get us as much as possible
off, that's really helpful.

SPEAKER_00 (04:02):
Yeah, and I'm not totally sure on this, but I
think VDI Lab, which I use for alot of my allergy testing, also
they do a fur analysis for heavymetals.
I think they will test forglyphosphate in your pet.
So I'm not exactly sure aboutthat.
That if it isn't, it's coming.
So they do a great job, something to look at, VDI
Labs.com.

SPEAKER_01 (04:19):
Which would be a less invasive method than like a
biopsy or something.
Okay, perfect.
Well, we will keep our eyes outfor that and tell you guys if we
and when we find it.
