Speaker 1 (00:00):
A lot of these blogs
have millions of niche followers
, which is great.
Thousands and millions of nichefollowers.
I teach you write the blog postfirst and then you pitch it to
them.
Hey, I wrote this for youroutlet.
Are you interested in it?
I don't like to waste time, soI don't like to send an email
first and saying, hey, would yoube interested in a blog post on
this topic.
I like to just send it to them.
They get to decide, get ananswer quicker that way.
(00:22):
If the answer is yes, great.
If the answer is no, you stillhave the blog post.
You really haven't lostanything.
You get to pitch it to anotheroutlet that focuses on the same
thing.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
I don't want my work
to be stuck behind an academic
paywall.

want to change lives.
This podcast, power yourResearch, is my attempt to help
the smartest people in the worlddo that very thing.
My hope is that you use thelessons I share to make more
money than what your higher edjob can ever pay you.
(01:06):
I've done it, my clients havedone it, and so can you.
My hope is that you'll applywhat you learn here and one day
join the Power your Researchprogram, where you can work with
me one on one.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
The topic of this is
how to get five media placements
in 30 days, and so I'm going toshare three things with you
that, if you do these over thenext 30 days, you can land five
media placements.
Now the first one is to createan account with Help A Reporter
Out.
That's H-A-R-O.
It's free for you because youare a source.
(01:51):
Journalists are actuallylooking for you.
It's just that all thejournalists are on Help A
Reporter Out, so you're going togo and create a Help A Reporter
Out profile, and then what'sgoing to happen is HARO is going
to send you emails like threetimes a day with all of the
journalists all across thecountry and world that are
looking for sources.
They are looking for you, andwhat you're going to do is just
(02:13):
spend two hours a weekresponding to these queries.
So it's going to be it's goingto be journalists asking for
sources for all types ofarticles.
Find the ones that are relevantto you or adjacent to something
that you are an expert in, andjust reply.
Do this for two hours once aweek for the next 30 days.
(02:33):
You'll get some mediaplacements there.
Honestly, you might get fivejust by doing that.
That's how good it is.
Second tip is to pitch yourselfto your local NPR station.
Now, npr is a high-level mediaoutlet, but NPR is national.
Every city has one, so whatevercity or place is closest to you
(02:54):
that has an NPR affiliate, youwant to find a reporter or a
segment or a show or a story?
Look on their online site, findsome topics that are relevant
to what you talk about and whatyou do, and pitch those
producers.
This is going to take a littlebit of research and effort on
your part to find out thejournalist or the producer who
(03:14):
produces the shows.
Once you get their emailaddress, pitch them a story.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Hey everyone real
quick.
I don't run any ads on thispodcast, so I have to rely on
word of mouth.
If this podcast has helped youin any way, please share it with
a friend and follow me, drSheena Howard, on LinkedIn,
where I give more free contenton building your brand as an
academic.
If you tell me you came to myLinkedIn from the podcast, I'll
(03:40):
make sure I accept your request.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Now there's a whole
technique and method that you
need to use to pitch properly.
But for right now, if you justdo that and let's say you just
spend 30 minutes a week on thisfinding the email addresses and
pitching them your story, makesure it's relevant to something
they've talked about in the pastor relevant to the show's topic
, you will get responses.
And please remember to followup.
(04:04):
Don't just send one email andthen be like oh, they didn't
respond.
You don't want to do that.
The third tip is for you to getfive media placements in the
next 30 days.
The third tip is to write in athousand word blog post about
whatever you care about, whatever your area of expertise
is in.
You're going to write that athousand word blog post, pitch
it to an outlet that cares aboutthat thing.
(04:25):
Okay, so you could pitchsomething to the Chronicle of
Higher Education.
You can pitch something.
If you're into climate change, pitch it to a blog that focuses
on climate change.
This could be smaller outlets, bigger outlets.
A lot of these blogs havemillions of niche followers,
which is great.
Thousands and millions of nichefollowers.
I teach you write the blog postfirst and then you pitch it to
them.
Hey, I wrote this for youroutlet.

(05:09):
You do those three things.
I know that you will havesuccess and please circle back
and let me know all of the mediacoverage you're getting after
you actually execute the thingsthat I just taught you.
