Speaker 1 (00:00):
I want you to be in a
position where you understand
(00:03):
that your academic credentialshave value outside of higher ed
and, if you have the tools to beable to get consistent speaking
engagements, to get consultingwork and charge more to be out
here understanding how to coachpeople and leverage your
academic credentials so thatyour job is an option, because
that is true security.
I don't want my work to bestuck behind an academic paywall
(00:41):
.
I want to leave a legacy, Iwant to reach my potential and I
want to change lives.
This podcast, power yourResearch, is my attempt to help
the smartest people in the worlddo that very thing.
My hope is that you use thelessons I share to make more
money than what your higher edjob can ever pay you.
I've done it, my clients havedone it, and so can you.
(01:03):
You I've done it, my clientshave done it, and so can you.
My hope is that you'll applywhat you learn here and one day
join the Power your Researchprogram, where you can work with
me one-on-one.
I try not to pay too muchattention to all of the bad
things that are happening in theworld.
(01:25):
I happened to see this articlerecently about a number of
colleges and universitiesshutting down, and I
particularly think that small, private liberal arts
universities that are veryregional are at risk of
financial troubles.
And you know, this article, which I'm actually reading now,
(01:45):
says why did six colleges shutdown over the past 12 months and
this is a recent article, it's2022 in Benzinga Financial News
and Data, and, as I look at this, they go over why these
colleges have shut down.
Now, some of the colleges onthis list are Becker College,
concordia College in New York, judson College, lincoln College,
(02:09):
marymount California University, ohio Valley University, you
know, and the list goes on andon and on.
While I don't want to get intowhy these universities shut down
, the bottom line is you shutdown when you don't have enough
money right, when you don't haveenough butts in seats and you
can't pay your bills.
(02:30):
And so why I think this isimportant is because it's one of
the foundations of why Icreated the Power, your Research
program.
I see us going down a road inthe future where it's very, very
important for particularlytenured professors, but really
anyone with an advanced degreethat wants to kind of be in this
(02:52):
higher ed space.
It's really important for youto have entrepreneurship skills
to remind yourself that you needto be valuable in the
marketplace in case the highered job does not work out,
particularly for my tenuredprofessors.
And here's why because whenyou're tenured, that means that
you've been at your universityfor a period of time.
(03:14):
It means that you're not reallyout on the job market applying
for regular jobs.
You have a sense of security.
You've made tenure and you feelsecure in where you are and
you've probably decided to makeit work where you.
Why I bring this up?
It's because these are theconcerns I had when I decided to
(03:48):
take this brand building thingseriously.
Now I've been building my brandfor over a decade.
I've always wanted my work tobe accessible to everybody.
I've always wanted to use myresearch to help people outside
of academe.
Hey, everyone, real quick.
I don't run any ads on thispodcast, so I have to rely on
(04:09):
word of mouth.
If this podcast has helped youin any way, please share it with
a friend and follow me, drSheena Howard, on LinkedIn,
where I give more free contenton building your brand as an
academic.
If you tell me you came to myLinkedIn from the podcast, I'll
make sure I accept your request.
I really started taking thisseriously when I saw tenured
(04:32):
professors being laid off andwhen I keep reading news about
colleges and universitiesshutting down because your
tenure is not going to save you, your tenure is not going to
allow you to keep your job ifyour program or department shuts
down.
And so I I want you to be in aposition where you understand
that your academic credentialshave value outside of higher ed
(04:54):
and if you have the tools to beable to get consistent speaking
engagements, to get consultingwork and charge more to be out
here, understanding how to coachpeople and leverage your
academic credentials so thatyour job is an option, because
that is true security.
Tenure you do have a sense ofsecurity, but when your academic
(05:14):
job can be an option becauseyou have money coming in from
your brand, that is truesecurity.
So if something were to happento your university or your
department or program, you areokay, you still have money
coming in to your household.
So at the Power, your Researchprogram, I don't tell any of my
(05:35):
clients, hey, abandon yourhigher ed job.
I tell them to make sure thatyou have enough money triple
what your university is payingyou so that if you decide to
leave higher ed or you lose yourhigher ed job, you will be okay
because you already are makingmore money off of your brand
(05:55):
than what the university ispaying you anyway.
And I think this is reallyimportant because I do see a
scenario and I feel like thescenario is here already and you
can really capitalize on wherewe are in our society.
I see kind of a two-tieredsystem of people with PhDs who
have leveraged their brand andwho are living the life of their
(06:15):
dreams, using all of theirtalents and their passions to go
out here and change people'slives and make money.
And then I see people who havePhDs, who even have tenure, or
who don't have tenure but havePhDs and thought they would be
able to get a tenure track jobbut couldn't who are struggling.
I see these two types of peopleand the one person has
(06:37):
developed entrepreneurshipskills to build their brand and
be secure and the other personwas relying on this system to go
through the tenure process, torely on higher ed to make a life
for themselves, and that isbecoming increasingly more
difficult.
Getting a tenure track job isalmost like trying to go to the
(06:58):
NFL, you know.
I hope this helps to put thingsin perspective and let me know
in the comments what you feelabout colleges shutting down and
the stability of higher ed.
Again, my name is Dr SheenaHoward.
I'm the founder of Power, yourResearch, you.
