Something happens in John 4 that still feels disruptive today: Jesus crosses a hard social line, speaks openly with a Samaritan woman, and turns one private conversation into a public turning point. We pick up right after Jesus identifies himself as the Messiah, when the disciples return and can barely process what they’re seeing. Their silence says a lot, and it sets the stage for why this moment matters for anyone who’s wrestled with fear of people, reputation, or the feeling that they’re “not the right person” to speak about faith.

From there, the Samaritan woman does something both simple and brave. She leaves her water jar behind and goes back to town with a candid invitation: “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did.” We talk about why her question is so effective, how personal testimony can prepare others to hear the gospel, and what it looks like when curiosity becomes movement toward Jesus. This is practical Christian evangelism without hype, rooted in honesty and a real encounter.

Meanwhile, Jesus uses an everyday moment to train the disciples. When they urge him to eat, he answers with a deeper kind of hunger: “My food is to do the will of him who sent me.” We unpack what that means for Christian discipleship, spiritual growth, and mission, including Jesus’ harvest metaphor and his reminder that one person sows while another reaps. The story lands with a town confessing Jesus as “the Savior of the world,” then pivots toward Galilee where familiarity and miracle-seeking create a colder welcome. SPEAKER_00 (00:14):
Grace and peace to you from God our Father.
Thank you again for joining mefor the mysteries of God's Word.
Today we are in John chapterfour, and we are continuing with
how Jesus visited the Samaritanwoman.
Last week we ended with versetwenty six when Jesus declared

(00:35):
to the Samaritan woman that hewas the Messiah.
We pick up today in verse twentyseven.
Just then his disciples cameback.
They marveled to see that he wastalking with a woman.
But no one said, What do youseek?
Or why are you talking with her?

(00:56):
So the woman left her water jarand went away into a town and
said to the people, Come, see aman who told me all that I ever
did.
Can this be the Christ?
They went out of the town andwere coming to him.
In these three verses we seethat at the very moment Jesus

(01:18):
had finished declaring who hewas to the Samaritan woman, his
disciples show up from gettingfood from town.
And this shows God's divinetiming in all things.
We're told that the disciplesmarveled that he was talking
with a woman.
And the Greek word for marvelmeans to be amazed or to be

(01:42):
astonished.
Yet it also carries with it atone of admiration for what's
happening.
When the disciples came back, they were utterly speechless.
Jesus had broken major socialtaboos by speaking with her, and
it dumbfounded the disciples.

(02:03):
Jews didn't speak withSamaritans, and men typically
would never speak with a femalestranger, especially a rabbi
whose reputation is on the line.
However, despite these things, the disciples had some
admiration for what Jesus wasdoing by talking with her.

(02:26):
Perhaps the disciples hadalready come to realize that
everything Jesus did was good.
And perhaps, despite thestrangeness of this situation,
they knew that these socialcustoms were based in anger and
in fear.
And in the middle of this veryawkward situation, with the

(02:48):
disciples arriving and seeingJesus talking with the Samaritan
woman, the Samaritan woman getsup, leaves her jar, and heads to
town.
The Samaritan woman was soexcited to hear that Jesus was
the Messiah that she wanted toshare this with the townspeople.
And it was more important forher to share this message about

(03:10):
Christ with the townspeople thanit was to be concerned with her
reputation.
And when she comes to the town, she tells people, Come see a man
who told me everything that Iever did.
Can this be the Christ?
This could probably be bettertranslated, this can't be the

(03:31):
Messiah, can it?
The Samaritan woman knew thatthe people would not look
favorably upon her simply goinginto town and declaring the
Messiah, especially a woman ofher reputation.
So just as Jesus caught hercuriosity, she uses a question
to raise the people's curiosity.

(03:54):
And this woman's testimony andcandor so impressed the people
of the town that they began tohead out and find this Jesus.
Picking up in verse thirty one.
Meanwhile, the disciples wereurging him, saying, Rabbi, eat.
But he said to them, I have foodto eat that you do not know

(04:17):
about.
So the disciples said to oneanother, Has anyone brought him
something to eat?
Jesus said to them, My food isto do the will of him who sent
me, and to accomplish his work.
Do you not say there are yetfour months, then comes the

(04:37):
harvest?
Look, I tell you, lift up youreyes and see that the fields are
white for the harvest.
Already the one who reaps isreceiving wages, and gathering
fruit for eternal life, so thatthe sower and the reaper may
rejoice together.
For here the saying holds true.

(04:59):
One sows and another reaps.
I send you to reap for thatwhich you did not labor.
Others have labored, and youhave entered into their labor.
In verses thirty one throughthirty eight, we see the
discussion that happened betweenJesus and his disciples, as the

(05:19):
Samaritan woman was giving hertestimony and bringing people
from the town to see Jesus.
And it begins by telling us howthe disciples wanted Jesus to
eat.
They knew Jesus was weary andtired from his journey, and he
hadn't eaten in some time, sothey're urging him to eat the
food that they had brought fromtown.

(05:42):
But Jesus, just having spokenwith this Samaritan woman, knows
that there are more importantthings immediately ahead, and
physical food was not the firstthing on Jesus' mind.
Instead, Jesus uses this as anopportunity to instruct his
disciples on doing the will ofthe Father, and how doing the

(06:04):
will of the Father will satisfytheir soul in a way that
physical food cannot.
But of course, the disciples areconfused.
They're wondering, maybesomebody else brought Jesus
food.
In typical human fashion, theysee things through physical
eyes, and they don't understandthe spiritual message Jesus is

(06:26):
giving.
Then Jesus clarifies and beginsto teach a lesson.
Jesus says, My food is to do thewill of him who sent me.
This reminds us of how whenJesus was fasting out in the
desert, how he was tempted bySatan to turn rocks into bread,

(06:46):
and Jesus told Satan, Man shallnot live by bread alone, but by
every word that comes from themouth of God.
And here Jesus is teaching hisdisciples that obedience and
dependence upon the Father'swill is the mission and should
be the focus of his disciples'lives.

(07:09):
Then Jesus uses an analogy abouthow the harvest is to come.
The spring harvest in Israel wastypically mid-April, and crops
would have been planted inNovember.
Therefore, we can place thisevent probably mid to late
December, when the grain wouldhave just been shooting out of
the ground because Jesus says,You say there are four months

(07:32):
until the harvest, which wassomething the disciples were
currently saying.
But Jesus uses this to show hisdisciples that the spiritual
harvest is always ready.
And Jesus says, Lift up youreyes.
As Jesus is talking to them, theSamaritan woman and the people

(07:53):
from Shekem are coming to meetJesus.
He tells his disciples, look up,see that the field is already
white for harvest.
And then Jesus talks about thesower and the reaper gathering
fruit for eternal life together.
Jesus here is talking about thework of evangelism and leading

(08:16):
people to the Messiah.
Jesus is telling his disciplesthat even right now, ahead of
eternity, here on earth, thosewho lead others to Christ are
receiving wages.
They're receiving rewards orblessings.
And Jesus points out how thework of God can take time on a

(08:37):
person's heart.
One person may sow seeds ofGod's word into another person's
heart, while another person mayreap the harvest and lead them
to receive Jesus Christ as theirLord and Savior as they see
their salvation.
But all people who participatein the work of evangelism and

(08:59):
this ministry of the gospel ofJesus will rejoice together at
the salvation of lost souls.
And Jesus says, Others havelabored, and you have entered
into their labor.
For many have labored for thegospel, the prophets of the Old

(09:19):
Testament.
John the Baptist has preparedthe way for Jesus' ministry, and
Jesus himself has now preparedthe way for this Samaritan woman
and the town.
And now the disciples will beministering as the Samaritan
woman and these people from thetown come.

(09:39):
Picking up in verse thirty nine.
Many Samaritans from that townbelieved in him because of the
woman's testimony.
He told me all that I ever did.
So when the Samaritans came tohim, they asked him to stay with
them, and he stayed there fortwo days, and many more believed

(10:00):
because of his word.
They said to the woman, It's nolonger because of what you said
that we believe, for we haveheard ourselves and we know that
this is indeed the Savior of theworld.
In verses thirty-nine throughforty-two, we see how many of
the people of Shekem believed inJesus because of the Samaritan

(10:25):
woman's testimony.
The Samaritan woman told themhow Jesus supernaturally knew
everything about her.
And this shows us how ourpersonal testimony and how Jesus
has personally saved us andworked in our lives can prepare
others to hear the good news andbelieve.

(10:47):
And when the people of the townmet Jesus, they asked him, Can
you stay here?
And Jesus stayed for two moredays.
And while some of the town hadbelieved because of the
Samaritan woman's testimony, after they spent time with Jesus
and heard his message, they knewfor themselves that this was the

(11:08):
Messiah, and many more came tobelieve.
They said this is indeed theSavior of the world.
This statement is the climax andsummary of this chapter.
This ministry to the Samaritanwoman and the entire town of
Shekem is the first time Jesusdeparted from ministering to the

(11:33):
Jews.
The light of Jesus Christ is notlimited to the nation of Israel,
but it is for the whole world.
Jesus establishes here a missionpattern for the church, from
Judea to Samaria to the Gentilenations.

(11:55):
Picking up in verse forty three, after the two days he departed
for Galilee, for Jesus himselfhad testified that a prophet has
no honor in his own hometown.
So when he came to Galilee, theGalileans welcomed him, having
seen all that he had done inJerusalem at the feast, for they

(12:17):
too had gone to the feast.
In our last three verses, versesforty three through forty five
we see the transition fromSamaria to Galilee.
After Jesus had spent those twodays in Shekem, he leaves for
Galilee, and Galilee would havebeen about a three day walk from

(12:40):
Shekem.
And now we see that after theopenness of Jesus proclaiming
himself as Messiah, and theSamaritans receiving him as
Messiah, Jesus heads back to hisown people who have hardened
hearts, and in large part willreject him and be skeptical of

(13:01):
him.
Jesus said that a prophet has nohonor in his own hometown.
And why is that?
Because most of the time peopleare looking for something
miraculous, somethingsupernatural.
And if people have grown up withyou, people have seen you day to
day, they don't see you as aprophet.

(13:22):
They don't see you as doingmiraculous things.
They see you as ordinary.
But when Jesus did go toGalilee, there were people in
Galilee that were impressed, because they had seen the
miracles Jesus did in Jerusalemat the feast.
And they would welcome him inGalilee as a healer and a

(13:42):
miracle worker, but they wouldreject him as the Messiah.
We're going to pause here and wewill pick up next week when
Jesus heals a royal official'sson.
Thank you for joining me thisweek with the conclusion of
Jesus visiting the SamaritanWoman.
God bless you this week.
