SPEAKER_00 (00:16):
Grace and peace to
you and thank you again for
joining me for the mysteries ofGod's Word.
Today we are in John chapterfour and we begin at verse forty
six.
So he came again to Cana inGalilee, where he had made the
water wine, and at Capernaumthere was an official whose son
(00:42):
was ill.
When this man heard that Jesushad come from Judea to Galilee,
he went to him and asked him tocome down and heal his son, for
he was at the point of death.
Here in our first two verses, welearn that Jesus had now come
through Samaria, spent the timewith the Samaritans, and is now
(01:07):
in Cana of Galilee.
And we are reminded that this iswhere he did his first miracle,
making water into wine.
The word for official here is aroyal official.
This could very likely be acenturion or someone in the
service of King Herod.
(01:28):
And this official's son was verysick, and he didn't have any way
of helping his son.
And when this official heardthat Jesus had come, he walks
sixteen miles to see if thishealer Jesus could possibly save
him.
When the royal official gets toJesus he asks him to come down
(01:50):
and heal his son.
The language in the Greek hereindicates that this official
begged Jesus repeatedly to healhis son.
The royal official was desperateand looking for any possible way
that his son could be healed, but he yet didn't have an
appreciation for who Jesus was.
(02:13):
We see from this royal officialhis brokenness and his humility.
He's not demanding signs fromJesus, but he is begging Jesus
to help him.
Anyone who demands signs fromGod is obnoxious.
They're trying to turn God intoa Santa Claus rather than
(02:36):
acknowledge God as their Lord.
And Jesus says to the royalofficial, unless you see signs
and wonders, you will notbelieve.
When Jesus says unless you seesigns and wonders, he's using a
plural for the word you here.
Jesus is addressing all of theGalileans, not just the royal
(02:57):
official.
The Galileans were focused ontheir own wants and needs.
Many of them were demandingmiraculous signs rather than
acknowledging their need for theSavior Jesus Christ.
All they wanted were thebenefits of God without actually
wanting to know God.
(03:19):
And this kind of attituderepresents a deep state of
unbelief.
Picking up in verse forty nine, the official said to him, Sir,
come down before my child dies.
Jesus said to him, Go, your sonwill live.
Here in verses forty nine andfifty, in spite of Jesus' sharp
(03:42):
rebuke, this royal officialcontinued to plead for mercy and
for the life of his son.
And Jesus then responds to theofficial's plea for mercy in a
way that would demand faith.
As we have seen in the last twostories, both with Nicodemus and
(04:02):
the Samaritan woman, Jesus knowsthe hearts of men.
And Jesus knew the heart of thisroyal official and what was
about to happen next.
And we read that the manbelieved the word that Jesus
spoke to him.
The man took Jesus at his word.
(04:23):
It shows us that this man wasmore than just a sign seeker.
He trusts Jesus, and he believeswhat Jesus says is true about
the healing of his son.
However, he had not yet placedhis faith in Jesus as Messiah.
(04:44):
Picking up in verse fifty-one.
As he was going down, hisservants met him and told him
that his son was recovering.
So he asked them the hour whenhe began to get better.
And they said to him, Yesterdayat the seventh hour the fever
left him.
(05:06):
The father knew that that wasthe hour when Jesus said to him,
Your son will live.
And he himself believed, and hiswhole household.
This was now the second signthat Jesus did when he had come
(05:27):
from Judea to Galilee.
In these last four verses, itbegins with as he was going
down.
We get a picture that thisofficial had been pondering the
words of Jesus all the way home.
He was thinking about his son,and then a day later on his
(05:51):
journey, he's met by one of hisservants, who comes out to tell
him the good news that his sonwas recovering.
And the royal official, curiousas to how this all worked out,
asked what hour his son startedfeeling better.
And he found out that thishealing was no coincidence, for
(06:15):
it happened the very moment thatJesus told him his son would
live.
A little side note here, theseventh hour, according to the
Jewish clock, is one PM.
And then we are told that hehimself believed.
(06:42):
And what made this royalofficial recognize the truth of
Jesus as the Christ?
Because Jesus said his son wouldlive.
That phrase, his son would live, appears three times in this
narrative.
And this royal official knewbecause the Messiah, Jesus, is
(07:04):
the source of life.
And he trusted in the Creator, the Messiah, the Redeemer, Jesus
Christ.
And as a result of the Father'spersonal experience and belief
in Jesus Christ, his wholehousehold believed.
And this is the second sign thatJesus did when he had come from
(07:27):
Judea to Galilee.
What this is telling us is thisis the second sign now done in
Galilee.
This was not the second sign ofJesus.
Jesus had done many signs inJerusalem at the Passover.
But this was the second signthat Jesus did in Galilee.
(07:50):
The first, as we were remindedearlier in this narrative, was
turning water into wine, andhere the second is the healing
of this royal official's son.
Thank you for joining me todaywhere we are reminded that Jesus
is the source of life, as hehealed this royal official's son
(08:11):
from miles away.
God bless you this week.
