Have you ever experienced that magical moment when time seems to stop because you're completely immersed in something you love? That's exactly what I explore in this deeply personal reflection on passion.

There's something transcendent about loving not just the results, but the entire process of an activity. For me, it happens when I'm writing comedy late at night—from the initial spark of an idea to perfecting the delivery and timing, right through to that perfect moment when the audience erupts in laughter. It's one of the greatest feelings in the universe.

But what makes this exploration particularly interesting is the concept of "jumping railroad tracks" between different passions. When I rotate from comedy to martial arts like jiu-jitsu and judo, something fascinating happens. The physical demands of mastering an Uchimata throw or perfecting a takedown technique give my creative mind space to breathe while still engaging deeply with something meaningful. This mental toggle allows ideas to marinate subconsciously while I'm focused elsewhere—creating a powerful synergy between seemingly unrelated pursuits.

Whether it's the rush of landing a joke perfectly or the satisfaction of executing a martial arts technique that just clicked, these moments reveal what true passion feels like. It's comparable to how a bird might feel in flight or a dedicated runner lacing up their shoes—there's something almost spiritual in it. By documenting these reflections, I'm creating stronger mental imprints that will guide future creative pursuits while hopefully inspiring you to identify and pursue your own passions. What railroad tracks do you jump between? Whatever brings that feeling of complete immersion, get after it—it's one of life's greatest gifts.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
you know when you really love something, when
you're really passionate andthis is me just speaking, you
know for myself.
I guess it's when you love theprocess of something.
It's like after nine o'clock atnight and I'm writing jokes and
everything from being up onstage to thinking of an idea, to

(00:23):
expressing it and then workingon it and cultivating it and
just getting that perfectdelivery and the tempo and then
that small delay and then bam,the laugh right back.
It is one of the greatestfeelings in the entire universe
and I'm so passionate about itand I'm so thankful that I have
more than one passion, such assilverback wrestling, jujitsu,

(00:47):
judo right, it takes my mind offof the one and it puts it on
the other, right, and I'm sopassionate about putting on that
gi and putting that belt on andlearning how to do and take
downs and stuff.
It's a different kind ofpassion, right, but it's still
passion.
It's a different of passion,right, but it's still passion.
It's something different.
But the whole process of itlearning these moves about the

(01:10):
leverage, about the momentum, where to step, how to step, what
angle to turn, and when youexecute something, perfect, like
a sweet Uchimata it's like thegreatest feeling I have this
moment where there's this guy, eric, and uh, the coach, hugo,
one time, uh, I had just learnedhow to do uchimata and uh, it's

(01:33):
basically like that judo movewhere you see the leg going
between the guy like their legs, and then they, they flip over
and fall on the ground and hittheir back.
And and this guy, eric, showedme how to do it and I made one
small adjustment and I didn'thave it the day before and I
made one small mental adjustmentand the very next day I did it

(01:53):
in front of the coach and he wasimpressed.
He was like do that again.
And bam, I hit it a second time.
And then my buddy, eric, hetold me right after class.
He was like I was so impressedbecause the day was just like,
the last time that we did it youwere not doing it right.
And this time you did it righttwice in front of coach.
And when you, when you getsomething done in front of

(02:14):
somebody, it's almost likebragging rights.
You know, like if I say a jokeand it's a really good idea, and
I'm at Walmart or something, itjust sort of hits me, it's
awesome, right, but when I sayit in front of a crowd,
priceless.
Anyway, I'm just, I'm reallythankful that I have more than
one thing that I'm passionateabout, and I always call it
jumping railroad tracks, becauseI go from one railroad track to

(02:37):
the other and when I think toomuch about comedy and I rotate
to martial arts, right, if aguy's trying to attack me, I'm
not thinking about my jokes.
I mean I am subconsciouslyright, but it's just it kind of
it's like weightlifting, butlike it's different, right,
because you're focusing on aphysical task and letting like
the subconscious marinate, so tospeak.

(02:58):
That's how you know you lovesomething.
Yeah, you know it's more, justlike, it's more than just like.
You know.
I mean, imagine how like a birdfeels when, um, when it's
flying in the air, or someonewho loves to run, when they're
lacing up their shoes and, um,they're, they're stretching the

(03:20):
whole process, the whole processthat they go through.
It's just gotta be like, it'sgotta be like spiritual to them.
You know what I mean.
And I, I, I had to do tons andtons of running in the army and
stuff, but I haven't ever beenlike a runner.
It hasn't been like a callingfor me.
It's not something that Ireally enjoy, um, but, uh, I

(03:41):
mean, yeah, I can do it, butanyway, yeah, I was just sitting
here and I was like you knowwhat I feel, like I just need to
document this moment and thatthat's again really what this
podcast is all about.
It's just, you know, um eyeopening for myself, for you, the
listener, the viewer, andwhatnot, if you're watching this
on video and uh, just sort oftaking a step back and making

(04:03):
like these mental observationsand, yeah, over, you know,
achieving them and overcomingthem and stuff.
And I feel like the more thatyou say out loud, especially if
you take a mental note of it Ialmost should be like the name
of the podcast again, but mentalnote, but yeah, I just feel

(04:24):
like it's just captures thatmoment in time, it makes like an
imprint so that it's strongerfor the future.
So, anyway, I just had to getthis out because, again, I'm
writing jokes and I'm reallyenjoying it.
I'm having so much fun and Igot to get back to it.
So, anyway, y'all have abeautiful day, find something
you're passionate about.
Hopefully you could have morethan one and, if not, get back

(04:44):
to it.
So, anyway, y'all, have abeautiful day, find something
you're passionate about.
Hopefully you could have morethan one, and if not, get after
it.
I'm Ben Joel Dunn, check me out.
Peace.
