SPEAKER_01 (04:32):
Welcome everybody to
another episode of the Ride Home
Rants podcast.
This is, as always, your host,Mike Bono.
I have a great episode for ustoday.
It is our annual Halloween showwith Halloween right around the
corner, a couple days away fromwhen we're recording this show.
I had to get my panel of gueststogether here to talk all things
(04:54):
Halloween and spooky topics.
I'm going to let them introducethemselves.
Uh guys, I need your and lady.
I need your name and the answerto these two questions.
And it's what's a worse highschool mascot and name, the
ponies or the quicksands?
And who is a better actor?
Mark Wahlberg or Dwayne the RockJohnson?
(05:18):
And Brandon Spicer, we're goingto start with you.
SPEAKER_04 (05:21):
All right.
Uh I'm I'm Brandon.
Um, I would have to say theponies has got to be uh the
worst mascot name.
Um just it it at leastquicksand's terrifying.
I mean, everybody was scared ofthat shit when they were kids,
right?
We all thought it was gonna be abig who the hell's scared of a
pony, yeah.
So I I gotta I gotta say pony'sworse.
Um man, Mark Wahlberg and DwayneJohnson.
(05:42):
I say maybe just barely, barelyMark Wahlberg.
I I think he's he's shown alittle bit more range because
he's he's been acting a littlebit longer.
Uh but and the rock's prettygood too, so it's close.
SPEAKER_01 (05:55):
I gotcha.
And next on the list, weactually have Brandon's wife
Lori with us too as well.
SPEAKER_05 (06:02):
Hello, I'm Lori
Spicer.
Uh I would say quick quicksand, because you know, that's not
something that you find veryoften, so it's not like it's
something that you wouldnecessarily be terrified of that
much.
And I would have to go withMark.
I'm a Mark fan.
SPEAKER_01 (06:22):
Yeah, who doesn't
love Marky Mark for sure?
And quicksand, I honestlythought the way they talked
about it when I was a kid, I wasgoing to be running into it more
than zero times than I have in36 years when it's early.
SPEAKER_05 (06:33):
You would have seen
it a lot more, and yeah, it's
kind of disappointing once yougot older to realize that yeah,
I've never seen it ever, ever.
And you don't hear about it,like it's not like you know,
it's just our area, it's notlike it's on the news.
So I think that's kind ofdisappointing.
SPEAKER_01 (06:50):
Absolutely.
Next on the list, we haveShannon.
SPEAKER_06 (06:55):
Hi, I'm Shannon.
And between the ponies or thequicksand, I'm gonna go with the
quicksand as well.
It's just kind of underwhelming, though it there is an element of
fear to it, but it's fake fearbecause as you said, it we never
really run into it.
So I'm gonna go with thequicksand, and then between the
rock and Mark Wahlberg, it isclose.
(07:18):
I am gonna lean toward the rock.
I think there's more movies thatI watch of his, so that's why
I'm gonna go that way.
But Mark Wahlberg is hilarious, especially in Ted.
That's one of my faves, so gottagive him some credit too.
SPEAKER_01 (07:31):
Gotcha.
Can't go wrong with Ted.
Two of my favorite movies sofar.
And last but not least, we havea staple on the ride home rants
podcast, and we have JJ.
Hey, um I'm JJ.
SPEAKER_02 (07:46):
James, JJ Phillips,
and um, between Pony and
Quicksand's a bad mascot, I'mgonna go with Pony because the
only thing I can think of when Ihear that is my little pony, the
little toys from back in theday.
That's the first thing thatcomes to mind when I hear pony.
And then uh between uh the rockand Mark Wahlberg, you already
know where I'm going with this.
I'm always gonna roll withDwayne, The Ross Johnson, the
(08:09):
people's champ, the one of one.
I mean, action movie superstarhas crossed over to a more he
did uh what's that word, thefighting machine, which I've
heard is getting ray reviews, bythe way.
So, yeah, someone with the rock.
SPEAKER_01 (08:29):
I knew your answer
before I even asked the
question.
Uh for me, everyone knows MikeBono.
Uh, the worst mascot.
I I gotta go ponies on this one.
I feel like that ponies, we'rewe're going, we're going baby
horse.
I'm not afraid of baby horses.
That's just where I'm at on thatone.
Um I'm a marky mark fan myself, just the range that he has is uh
(08:55):
phenomenal in the movies that heis in.
Um going back to the to themascots, growing up in West
Virginia, that there was onethat is worse than both of those
uh combined.
And it's a town called Polka,West Virginia, and their high
school mascot is the dots.
They are the polka dots.
SPEAKER_02 (09:17):
Wow.
SPEAKER_01 (09:22):
Oh, that's the
worst.
That's way worse than both ofthose combined, yeah.
It could be the quicksandponies, and I'm still going
polka dots for sure.
SPEAKER_02 (09:32):
Trump's the both of
those for sure.
SPEAKER_01 (09:34):
Absolutely, but
we're not here to talk about
mascots or quicksand or uhactors here.
We are going to be talking aboutall things Halloween.
Uh, got my spooky favorites herewith us, and um I can't say
spicer because there's twospicers on here.
So uh everybody knows mynickname for you.
(09:57):
B Spizzle for you here.
Uh here.
Uh last year uh was the mostmildest uh Halloween that we
had, uh, close to 80 degrees.
What's your ideal Halloweenweather?
SPEAKER_04 (10:14):
Oh man, it's gonna
be nice, cool.
Um kind of where you gotta havea thick hoodie on, you know.
Yeah, uh it's gotta be nice anddark too.
You know, when I was a kid, theywould they would start your
Halloween when uh you gottastart trigger-treating when it
was uh when it was dark and it'dbe hours long.
You know, nowadays, which youknow I get for safety reason.
A lot of times they start itwhere it's more light outside
(10:36):
and it lasts for an hour, hourand a half in some towns.
Yeah, we were just gettingstarted at an hour and a half
back in the day, you know.
SPEAKER_01 (10:43):
Oh, it was it was
brutal back in the day growing
up.
Uh yeah, it started at dark, itwould it went on all night, uh
getting all hopped up on candyand sugar, and then school the
next day.
That was always fun.
Um but Shannon, what about you?
Ideal weather for Halloween?
SPEAKER_06 (11:01):
Ideal weather, I'm
gonna have to go with like a
good 70 degrees.
I feel like that's not too forme, that's not too warm and it's
not too cold.
And then I always remembergrowing up, like I hated having
my costume on and having to weara hoodie and all that extra
stuff under my like dress orsomething, whatever it was, you
know.
Um so I always remember that.
(11:21):
So if it could be just a littlebit warmer, but last year it was
almost too hot, to be honest.
But yeah, I would say around 70would be perfect.
This year it's not looking good, but not at all.
SPEAKER_01 (11:32):
Not looking good at
all this year.
Uh, if you're if you like thewarm weather, right?
Um JJ, what about you?
SPEAKER_02 (11:39):
Yeah, I'll probably
say around 65 degrees, uh leaves
on the ground.
As the day goes on, it gets alittle bit cooler down to the
60s.
I mean, you just gotta, I mean,I just remember like like uh
Shannon was saying, I hatedhaving to bundle up over top of
my costume and that type ofstuff.
Always wanted to show thecostume off, so 65 degrees is
(12:01):
probably good for me.
SPEAKER_01 (12:02):
I gotcha.
And uh we'll go L spizzle foryou on this one.
Uh what about you?
SPEAKER_05 (12:08):
Uh I like it
probably in the 60s, same same
type of thing.
I vague I have remember at leastone year growing up that uh it
was snowing when I was triggertreating.
So yeah, that was awful.
Yeah, I like it to be a nicemild night, uh ideally, having
some nice moonlight, a littlebit of wind, so you hear the
(12:29):
reliefs rustling around, give itthat spooky noise.
Always want something like that.
SPEAKER_01 (12:35):
Yeah, see, I I'm
such 50 to 70 degrees, love it.
That that's my shit right there.
50 to 70 degrees.
That's that's where I'm at.
Uh year round.
I don't I don't care what it is,year round for me.
Um, but yeah, I I need it to becooler.
Uh I don't need to be too toocold.
Um but yeah, I'd say around thathigh 50s, low 60s, it it would
(13:01):
be good for me.
Um but yeah, I don't want to bewearing too many layers under
the costume.
Um so yeah, if we could findthat nice happy ground.
But yeah, moonlight, the the anice breeze where you hear the
wind get that spooky leaverolling in, that that just
really sets the tone for forHalloween for me.
Uh Lori, this day with you.
(13:23):
Um, I know you guys, but uh, doyou have children?
And if so, are they dressing upfor Halloween?
SPEAKER_05 (13:29):
So, yeah, we uh our
our boy's 22.
So typically the past multipleyears, he is not dressed up.
Uh, he will still help pass outcandy and stuff.
Uh this year he's actuallydressing up.
He uh got a Jurassic Parkcostume because apparently that
was a pretty big thing in thestore.
So he went online and orderedhimself a uh Jurassic Park, like
(13:53):
a worker at the park that he'sgoing to wear without candy.
He doesn't like he's theopposite of us, he doesn't like
anything too spooky.
SPEAKER_01 (14:02):
I was gonna say, did
y'all like disown him at this
point in time in my residentparanormal investigators on the
Halloween show?
And you your son's not dressingup for Halloween?
Like, what do we do?
SPEAKER_05 (14:13):
He will he does
paranormal investigate with us,
yeah.
So he'll do that, but the thereal spooky stuff, like he hates
our basement.
SPEAKER_04 (14:20):
So we're surprised
he hasn't disowned us yet.
SPEAKER_03 (14:23):
Yeah, I didn't like
it.
SPEAKER_01 (14:27):
All right, JJ, what
about you?
SPEAKER_02 (14:29):
Yeah, my uh youngest
son.
Uh he he picks out his owncostumes this year.
He wanted to be Jason Voorhees,so that's what he's rolling as
and uh hockey.
So I'm talking aboutpersonality.
That's it right there.
That's it right there.
I'm still waiting for him to dothe OG, though, the greatest
slasher of all time, MichaelMyers, but he hasn't got there
(14:52):
yet.
You got we got ghost face, wegot last year he was ghost face
this year, Jason Voorhees.
So I'm waiting for him to getthe goat, get to the goat
status.
SPEAKER_01 (15:01):
You gotta work your
way up to the goat status.
You're right.
You can't go goat right off therip.
Like you can't do that.
Yeah, and you just spoke rightright to Spicer's heart there.
That those are his favoriteslashers right there.
SPEAKER_04 (15:16):
He called me until
he called her Michael Myers the
goat.
Then then I tossed.
Jason has the higher body count.
Come on.
Oh no, oh no.
Did you watch Halloween Kills?
Unfortunately, yes, what was thebody count on that?
No, no, you we like that one.
So Halloween Kills, I lovedHalloween.
(15:37):
Yeah, we like that one.
Halloween Gen doesn't exist.
SPEAKER_01 (15:43):
All right, Shannon.
What about you?
SPEAKER_06 (15:45):
Yes, I have a
14-month-old, and she is going
to be a cowgirl, and so this isher real, you know, first
trigger.
She was here last year, but notreally here, you know what I
mean?
Right.
So uh this is her first realexperience, so we'll see how
this goes.
SPEAKER_01 (16:00):
I gotcha.
Um, my 16-year-old, I don'tthink he's dressing up this
year.
Um, put it this way.
We're three days away fromHalloween.
I haven't heard him talk aboutit once.
Uh, so um, not sure if he's theone you um he normally comes out
the the day of Halloween, like,oh hey, I need a costume.
Like, oh yeah, um I'm so gladyou gave me a heads up.
(16:22):
Uh like, but yeah, so henormally ends up making his own
costume, which is pretty cool.
Um but yeah, so I don't know ifhe's gonna be dressing up.
I do know uh the wife and I,this will be the first year
we're actually both going to bedressing up for Halloween.
Um of course we have to do uhthe couple's costume.
(16:44):
We're actually going as Howardand Bernadette from the Big Bang
Theory.
Um of our as people say uh weremind them of them just with
our mannerisms and how we act.
So we're we're going forwardinto it.
Um I'm actually allowed to dressup at work, so I might go as
Howard to work.
Uh, so that would be interestingto say the least, uh, because I
(17:08):
do deal with the public a lot.
So that might be just a fun wayto get the the little dicky
there to wear underneath yourshirt.
I do.
I do have the dicky.
I have the bowl cut wig andeverything.
Uh the only thing the only thingI'm thinking about doing because
(17:28):
uh I can't bring myself to shavemy beard, I just can't do it.
Um with uh Buddy's beard carebeing one of my uh sponsors show
good plug, good plug.
I am not going to be shaving thebeard.
So I was thinking about going asuh Howard when they got back
from the Arctic with the bigbeard and it being scraggly and
(17:50):
just all poofed out because theyhe hasn't shaved in three
months.
So um that is what I wasthinking about doing for ours.
Um, but we found out and um thatthe tight pants that he wears is
is the issue for me uh that I'mrunning into.
Um that they're they're they'resnug.
(18:13):
There's it's gonna be a long dayat work uh for for that.
Um it's gonna be a rough day.
SPEAKER_04 (18:21):
Uh better better for
that gold bond and a holster,
man.
SPEAKER_01 (18:24):
Oh, it's it's gonna
be on tap for sure.
Um uh Spicer Lori kind ofanswered the question for you on
that one.
So we'll go to you on this one.
Um, and it's are you dressing upfor Halloween as an adult?
SPEAKER_04 (18:40):
Uh I mean, I'm Jason
every year.
What's what's hilarious aboutthat is to go over to to her mom
and dad's some pants out ofcandy.
Uh, but it's the the older kidsthat are terrified of me.
Young kids come up and give mefizz bumps, they're happy as
hell to see Jason Voorhees, butthe you know teenagers
(19:00):
terrified.
SPEAKER_01 (19:01):
Well, he I mean that
kind of was his MO.
He went after teenagers, so youknow what I mean.
Like that's kind of like they'replaying into the part.
SPEAKER_04 (19:08):
Yeah, that's true.
That's true.
I guess part six, he did walkaway from the uh the cabin that
had the uh the smallest kids init.
SPEAKER_01 (19:15):
So see, yeah, right.
I I got you.
I keep you, I keep you on it.
I keep you honest.
Shannon, what about you?
You dressed it up this year.
SPEAKER_06 (19:26):
So I went to like a
Halloween um fundraiser over the
weekend, and I was a cat.
I in all my years I've neverbeen a cat, and that's the most
basic costume.
I've been so many things.
I was a care bearer last year,I've been a nut, like just so
many random costumes.
And this year I went kind ofplain.
I was a cat, and then on Friday,I might be a pumpkin, also
something random, just whateverI have laying around.
(19:48):
Honestly, I might actually dosomething quick and easy.
So that's what I think I'm beingthis year.
And my husband, he's reallygonna kind of match me, whatever
I am, he's gonna be.
So you might just be twopumpkins walking around.
SPEAKER_01 (20:01):
Two pumpkins walking
around.
JJ, what about you, my man?
SPEAKER_02 (20:05):
Um, no, I'm not
dressing up.
I'm waiting for the day where Ino longer have to take anybody
trick-or-treating, and I can sitat the house and pass out candy
and dress up as Michael Myersand scare the living crap out of
the neighborhood kids.
SPEAKER_03 (20:19):
Gotcha.
SPEAKER_01 (20:20):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_00 (20:20):
Um that'll be fun.
SPEAKER_01 (20:24):
I I that's my
favorite thing to do is to pass
out candy.
But the past couple years, uh,we have been able to do it at
this new house that we're at.
Uh, we don't really have the thefront porch era to do it, but I
would set up a chair, I woulddress in all black Grim Reaper,
black, nothing you can't see,and I'd look like an animatronic
(20:44):
or just a actual statue justholding the bowl.
And I'd wait for the kids toreach their hand in, and then
I'd reach out and grab theirhand.
And that's just I was I was thatguy that's that's that would
just I'd love I love I don'tknow this is gonna sound so bad.
I love scaring kids.
That's that's that's my favoritething to do on Halloween is
(21:05):
scaring the kids.
And uh my wife loves handing outcandy, so um past couple years I
haven't had to take the the sonout.
He's older, he can go by himselfand uh trick-or-treat when he
does go trick-or-treating.
So um getting to do that hasbeen has been fun for me.
But uh, Lori, are we matching uha Brandon on the on the costume
(21:27):
or are we going as our ownthing?
SPEAKER_05 (21:28):
Uh well typically uh
I have done a Jason before, but
usually I go as Freddie.
So we have uh that's how what weusually do when we go to
conventions.
And uh last year was uh twoyears ago was too cold.
So I think I went as Sam fromTrigger Treat just because it
was warm.
But yeah, this year I think I'mgonna do Freddie.
SPEAKER_01 (21:50):
Okay.
All right.
I'm not mad at it.
I'm not gonna lie here.
I'm not mad at either any ofthose, um, except for JJ not
dressing up.
Um, that's the only thing I'mmad at.
SPEAKER_02 (21:58):
Um I will get there
eventually.
Eventually.
I will have I will have my timeto shine.
SPEAKER_01 (22:05):
Dude, you know, you
know I gotta give you shit
anytime you're on the show.
So give it back to you.
Uh Lori, uh, best Halloweencandy to get.
SPEAKER_05 (22:16):
Ooh.
It's a tie between probab forme, probably Kit Kat's and
Reese's peanut butter cups.
Those are my favorite.
SPEAKER_01 (22:23):
Can't go wrong with
those.
Uh JJ, what about you?
SPEAKER_02 (22:26):
Oh, it's gotta be
Reese cups, especially like the
pumpkin-shaped ones.
Oh, those aren't great.
Yes, yes, fire.
Yes, the best.
Yes, Janin.
SPEAKER_06 (22:36):
For sure.
I was gonna say Reese cups aswell, specifically the pumpkin
one.
It's it's it's it's a good one.
SPEAKER_01 (22:44):
Yeah.
If anybody says anything otherthan Reese's, like I think
you're wrong.
Um, so uh Peace Beatle, don'tlet me down.
SPEAKER_04 (22:52):
Uh so when I was a
kid, it was uh the any of the
houses that were giving out thefull-sized candy bars of
whatever.
It didn't matter what it was.
You were getting full size, youthought you were a king.
SPEAKER_01 (23:05):
Yeah, full sizes,
those were the houses like,
yeah, you're my first target.
I'm hitting you first.
I'm gonna go change costumes andgo back.
I don't know.
I'm not a bad guy, I'm that guy.
I find full sizes, you're givingout full sizes, bet.
I'm changing costumes comingback for sure.
SPEAKER_04 (23:22):
The other thing in
that the town I grew up in,
there was a house that alwaysgave out apples too.
It was the uh the people thatowned the the local uh apple
house in town, and they gave outan apple.
Every kid always made sure to goget their apple every year, too.
So that was a big thing in mytown.
SPEAKER_01 (23:35):
Yeah, yeah, we had
that.
Uh we had when I was growing up,there was there was a couple
houses, there was a couple uhdentists that would always, you
know, they they had to be thefun suckers, give out dental
floss, toothbrushes, and anapple.
Um you still had to go to thembecause I mean I I lived in a
very small town.
So if you didn't go like, oh, wedidn't see you.
It's like, oh, really?
Missed you.
(23:55):
Sorry.
Um, yeah, I must have thought itcame.
I'm sorry.
Uh but yeah, so we always madesure, but they always had the
best decorations out, and theyalways had that the house that
was that's like, yeah, they gotthe spooky, they got the fog
machines rolling in, walking upto the house.
They're out for it.
So it's like, okay, you'regiving out dental floss and
(24:17):
toothbrushes, you better bringit with the decorations.
Like, I'm I'm not I'm not comingto your house if it's plain.
If it's not decorated, I'm notcoming.
Like that's that's where I was,but yeah.
Uh Reese's for me all day.
My son knows the rules.
If he comes home with Reese's,he better get to them first
because if not, old dad's goingafter him and they're not gonna
make it through the nightbecause you gotta pay that dad
(24:39):
tax.
Yeah, dad tax is a real thing, and it's uh paid in Reese's, uh,
for sure.
Yep.
All right.
Uh Brandon, what's the uh what'sthe best couple of Halloween
movies, in your opinion?
And I don't know how much timewe have for this question for
you and JJ, because I feel likethis is gonna be a long answer
(25:00):
for the for the two of you, butuh best couple of Halloween
movies.
I think Brandon's frozen.
We lost we lost Brandon, Lori.
SPEAKER_02 (25:14):
Uh uh he said he
said he said Halloween, that's
what he said.
The original 1970 Halloween, that was his answer.
SPEAKER_01 (25:23):
I think we got your
bag, you back, right?
Yeah, just got the little tryright now.
SPEAKER_03 (25:37):
I think we're good.
SPEAKER_01 (25:58):
Just Halloween
movies.
Yeah, we're we're not goingMichael Myers in general.
Um, just plain old uh Halloweenmovies.
Plain old Halloween, just anytype of like spooky.
SPEAKER_05 (26:09):
Any spooky anything
sleepy hollow.
SPEAKER_01 (26:14):
Sleepy hollow, okay.
SPEAKER_05 (26:17):
The original
Halloween.
SPEAKER_01 (26:18):
Well, yeah.
SPEAKER_05 (26:20):
And hocus pocus is
what he says.
SPEAKER_01 (26:22):
And hocus pocus.
That's not one I thought youwere gonna say.
I'm not gonna lie to you here,Spice.
Uh, that that really thought weweren't going hocus pocus on
that.
But Shannon, what about you?
SPEAKER_06 (26:33):
I love Halloween
movies.
Um, some that I usually have towatch around this time.
Definitely Hocus Pocus,Nightmare Before Christmas.
I like that it serves dualpurpose um for now and Christmas
season.
Um, I love the Scream series andthe Chucky series, especially
the first child's play.
My brothers and I used to watchthat all the time, and it was
(26:55):
just like scare each other allnight.
So that just like holds aspecial place in my heart.
SPEAKER_01 (26:59):
Okay.
All right, JJ.
Uh let's try to keep it under ahalf hour here.
SPEAKER_02 (27:08):
Well, we're gonna go
with the original Halloween
number one, 1978 classic.
Then we're gonna go withHalloween four in the original
timeline, Revenge of MichaelMyers.
That one's good.
That's one's another, that's aHalloween classic, because I
mean it's just the return afterseason three of season uh
Halloween three seasons, thewhich didn't work out.
(27:28):
They came back to originalslasher, and then for my last
one, I'm gonna go Halloween2018, the most recent uh remake,
the first one out of thetrilogy.
So, yeah, those are it.
Okay, Lori, what about you?
SPEAKER_05 (27:45):
Uh I I watch this
stuff all year round, but
usually I try to hit uh uh uh II'm probably not gonna get a lot
of love for it, but uh I'm a petcemetery girl.
So this time of year I hit mypet cemetery.
Uh usually Halloween kills isthe one that I go to.
(28:07):
That's one of my favorites.
And I am a big sucker forPennywise.
So okay.
SPEAKER_01 (28:15):
I'm not gonna lie to
you.
I'm not gonna lie to you here.
Pennywise and it, the new one, fucked my wife up for the
longest time.
Like she was like, she doesn'tshe doesn't do scary movies that
much as it is.
Um big into watching paranormalstuff, but scare something about
scary movies for her.
(28:36):
So like that's just not her herjam.
And we we watched uh the newremake of it, and for like a
week, I think she like wanted tolike live in my skin because she
was just like that.
It it messed her up for a while.
Um I love scary movies.
Um Halloween, I Halloween killsuh uh for sure the original.
(28:58):
I mean, you can't go wrong withthe original uh for me.
And um, I just had it and itjust left my head.
Um I mean, all of the screams goon classic for for those ones.
Uh can't go wrong with those.
Um just because it adds a littlebit of comedy to it, but the
(29:20):
actual scary movies uh watchingthose just because as a
comedian, I can't not watchanything that doesn't have humor
to it.
Uh so watching those for sure.
That those would be my go-tos.
Um coming up into to Halloween.
Always got to make sure we wehave Halloween on while we're
(29:41):
handing out candy to have thatkind of soundtrack in the
background to as well.
Um so yeah, that that's that'swhere we're at with that.
Uh Lori, um what's the besthaunted house you've ever been
to?
SPEAKER_05 (30:01):
Well, I've been to a
few.
Uh I'd say the best one and theone I enjoyed the most.
Uh, we about two weeks ago justwent up to Blood Prison up in
Mansfield.
SPEAKER_01 (30:11):
Okay.
SPEAKER_05 (30:12):
And it was, I'd been
years ago before it was the
Blood Prison.
And I really enjoyed it.
It was probably the most funthat I've had at one.
And surprisingly, I'm not Inever used to be a big haunted
house fan because I don't likeuh people getting in my face.
SPEAKER_01 (30:28):
Yeah, yeah, I'm with
you on that one.
Spicer, what about you?
We'll we'll get we'll keep it inthe in the spicer family for
this.
SPEAKER_04 (30:35):
Oh the best one I've
ever been to.
Yeah, best one I've ever been towas uh the not scary farm in
California.
SPEAKER_01 (30:44):
Okay.
All right, Shannon, what aboutyou?
Yeah, I actually got tointerrupt.
SPEAKER_06 (30:53):
Did he get cut off?
SPEAKER_03 (30:54):
I think he got cut
off.
SPEAKER_06 (30:57):
Welcome back.
Uh one of the scariest hauntedhouses I've ever been to is in
Canada.
It's um on in an area calledClifton Hill that just has a lot
of fun stuff going on there.
There's like a Ripley's BelieveIt Or Not, there's the haunted
house, a lot of differentattractions, but it was so scary
(31:18):
and so much fun.
And when you're going throughit, they take a picture of you
at different points in time, kind of like when you're going
on a roller coaster at a musicparty to take those pictures.
SPEAKER_03 (31:26):
That's awesome.
SPEAKER_06 (31:26):
And oh my gosh, the
terror on our faces is
priceless.
It was so scary.
SPEAKER_02 (31:32):
That was good.
SPEAKER_01 (31:33):
That's good.
I'm I'm a huge fan of that.
I'm for that.
And I think we got Spicer back.
I think you were sayingsomething there at the end
there, uh, Brandon that we gotcut off.
SPEAKER_04 (31:43):
Oh, no worries, man.
I was just saying the not scaryfarm California, best one I've
ever been.
It was actually the first one Igot to go to, and it was back
when uh Elvira is stillperforming there.
So get to see her, uh, that wasyou know, grew up with Elvira,
so it was awesome.
SPEAKER_01 (31:55):
Awesome, for sure.
Uh JJ, what about you?
SPEAKER_02 (31:58):
Um, I haven't been
to a haunted house in a while,
actually.
Uh, but um from my high schooldays down there and um there's a
haunted house down there inSharon, Pennsylvania, downtown,
where uh I I could clear veryremember a guy chasing us with a
chainsaw on the way out.
So that's kind of stuck in myhead.
So that kind of yeah, that's theone.
SPEAKER_01 (32:19):
Yeah, uh had that um
for me.
There's there's two for me.
One, it's just the the localnostalgia of it.
They did it all growing up,local um park in West Virginia,
Brook Hills Park.
Uh, they turned it into uh theirgolf course into a haunted house
that always ended up in theclubhouse that turned into the
(32:41):
haunted house for you.
So started out with like a hayride and everything like that.
Get get get nice and warmed up.
They had people jumping out ofuh each different hole, and it
was back in the woods too aswell, uh, this golf course,
which made it even better.
Um but a lot of my friendsworked there in um in high
(33:01):
school, so uh I made a big jokeout of the whole thing.
Um, just because uh like Lori, Idon't like people in my face uh
jumping out the the jump scaresfor me is is I'm not not a huge
fan of that.
Um but they always had this oneroom that that screwed me up uh
is because I don't like dolls, and they had a whole doll room.
(33:22):
Like dolls are my bugaboo.
I'm not gonna lie to you guyshere, but uh yeah, that they had
people that uh they looked likedolls, they were actually actors
that would would jump up behindyou, some would grab onto you uh
while you were in there.
So it was pretty cool, it was alot of fun um at the end, but
they did have a guy with achainsaw uh walking around too
(33:43):
as well, so he chased you a lot.
But one that I will never forgetis when they turned Moundsville
Penitentiary into a hauntedhouse, and they actually had a
haunted tour there um onHalloween, uh, which made it
even better.
Uh, did that one.
I've done the haunted tour atMoundsville Penitentiary, and I
(34:04):
did the overnight tour, didn'tmake it the whole night.
Um, because that place is nojoke.
When they say it is haunted, I'mhere to tell you like that place
actually is haunted and it willit'll it'll stick with you.
Um at one point in time theylock you in cells in there and
(34:25):
it's just it's crazy the stuffthat you see and hear in there
when you're in there overnight.
I didn't make it.
Long till I was knocking on thedoor for the security guy like
all right I'm I'm cool.
I take keep keep the money.
I'm cool.
I'm gone.
SPEAKER_05 (34:39):
I'm out.
I'll wrap it up.
SPEAKER_01 (34:43):
In the daytime when
you do the tour, it's like it's
cool, it's fun.
You still hear some things, butit's daylight, so it's not that
bad.
But yeah, at night it's a wholedifferent ballgame.
And yeah, it it doing the andthem turning it into a haunted
house uh was pretty cool becauseyou had the the stuff that they
put there, but then you hadstuff that just wasn't meant to
(35:03):
be part of the house that wasactually that actually came out.
So yeah, it was it's it's a lotof fun for an actual haunted
place to turn into a hauntedhouse.
That that one for me was that'sup there uh as the best one for
sure.
Uh JJ that's stay with you here.
Um what's the most overratedHalloween costume?
SPEAKER_02 (35:28):
Um let me think.
I'm going to go with um what'sthe girl's name from the suicide
squad?
Uh Harley Quinn.
Harley Quinn.
SPEAKER_01 (35:40):
Most overrated.
Yeah, it got well way too playedout uh during that whole Suicide
Squad uh race for sure.
So I definitely understand thatit was just too much too quick
of Harley Quinn.
SPEAKER_02 (35:54):
That's uh now I
remember for a couple years
there.
I mean, it was just everybodyevery girl was dressed up as
Harley Quinn.
SPEAKER_01 (36:00):
I gotcha.
SPEAKER_02 (36:01):
Uh Brandon, what
about you?
SPEAKER_04 (36:04):
I would have to
absolutely agree.
Um, and I'm I'm hoping that theyyou know uh art the clown, it
doesn't happen with uh that thisyear.
SPEAKER_01 (36:15):
Gotcha, Shannon.
What about you?
SPEAKER_06 (36:18):
That I thought the
same thing, so that's so crazy
you said that.
I'm trying to think of anotherone though that was uh
overplayed when Barbie was out.
I saw a lot of Barbie and Kencombos and these pink, all pink
outfits.
So I would also say that one gota little played out to me.
SPEAKER_00 (36:37):
Yeah, I'm with you
on that one.
SPEAKER_05 (36:38):
Uh Lori, you got
anything that I was gonna
probably say the Barbie becauseI think last year there was so
many of them, and then thepeople that had multiple
children or had a boy and girl, then you always had Barbie and
Ken, or if they're kids, thenyou would end up with Barbie and
two kins or two Barbies in akin.
(37:00):
It was all just the same.
SPEAKER_01 (37:03):
Yeah, my three
nieces on both sides of the
family, my wife and mine, uh,all went as Barbie.
Uh wow, yeah.
Yeah, it was just like, are wekidding me?
Can we can we mix it up?
I I love all y'all to death, butno, pick a different somebody
else picked it.
New one, you gotta be gotta besomething else.
We can't be the same thing.
SPEAKER_05 (37:23):
Yeah, blues clues.
That would probably be anotherone.
SPEAKER_01 (37:26):
Blues, yeah.
SPEAKER_05 (37:27):
There was so many
blues clues the past couple
years walking around and notjust kids, yeah.
Whole family.
SPEAKER_01 (37:38):
Yeah, mine is for
me.
I mean, it's not a specificoverrated costume, but it's it's
a pet peeve of mine.
And it's when families go as awhole, like I don't like they
it's just a whole theme, and thewhole family has to abide by the
theme, and then they gotogether, like you know, like I
(38:01):
uh like okay, like I don't Idon't want to be that.
Well, that's the theme for thisfamily, so you know what I mean.
Like it I don't I don't likethat um for me.
It's it's just a pet peep ofmine.
Like, let's let's be creative, let's mix it up a little bit.
It's Halloween, it you get to bewhatever you want.
Um around here, I I feel likeit's just cheap.
I'd see a lot of grip reapers, you know.
(38:22):
You you throw the black sheetover you and get a get a sickle
cell, and like you're it, that'sit.
You know what I mean?
Like, and you got your costume,so we see a lot of that around
here.
So that one for me, just becauseI see it so much here.
Um, but yeah, the Harley Quinnswas way too much for me and
Barbie for sure.
But just the to keep it uhdifferent, yeah.
(38:45):
The the Grim Reapers and thefamily costumes is just too much
for me.
All right, Lori.
Uh, what's the most overratedHalloween or scary movie, in
your opinion?
SPEAKER_05 (39:02):
I don't know.
There's some there's probablyseveral that would fall in
there.
I don't know.
Uh I mean, here lately, I guessuh Megan has been a big one.
Megan has been popping upeverywhere.
(39:22):
I forgot about that.
I didn't like it was decent, butI don't know that it was as
great as everybody made it outto be.
SPEAKER_01 (39:42):
I completely forgot
about Megan.
SPEAKER_05 (39:45):
They're trying to
like make they were they're
comparing it to like she's theshe is this generation's version
of Chucky.
And I'm like, no, no, no, no,no, no, not at all.
Nowhere close.
SPEAKER_01 (39:58):
We're we're not
gonna disrespect Chucky like
that.
Let's let's get that out theway.
SPEAKER_06 (40:02):
We're not gonna not
Charles Le Ray, we're not able
to do that to him, not at all.
SPEAKER_05 (40:10):
So for me, I think
it would probably be that one
because that's what everybodycompares it to, and I'm like,
no, that no, now we're close.
SPEAKER_01 (40:18):
I got you, Shannon.
SPEAKER_06 (40:19):
What about you?
Sure.
That would have been my top one.
That movie is triggering becauseI just I wasted my time on it.
It wasn't scary at all.
Um, I don't know any otheroverrated ones.
Um, what other one did I watchrecently?
I watched uh Smile.
It's on Amazon Prime, I believe.
Smile and Smile 2.
(40:39):
It didn't really do much for meon the scary side of things.
I thought I think I maybe I hadhigher expectations, you know,
especially when Rotten Tomatoesgives a good score and stuff.
You know, sometimes you didthat.
I know.
Um, so that one might have beenanother one, but truly mine
would be Megan in case you wantto be Chucky.
SPEAKER_04 (40:57):
Yeah, did you get
anything different from Laura?
Oh, yeah, definitely the uh theHalloween movies.
No, I'm I'm kidding.
Man, uh overrated Halloween.
That that one's tough.
(41:18):
I would say have to agree withuh the magazine.
I you know, let's throw out theuh the child's play remake that
had um Luke Skyward, you know.
It was okay, uh, but it it itjust you can't replace Bat
Braddorf.
SPEAKER_01 (41:32):
You just can't.
Yeah, that's that's that's atough one.
JJ, what about you?
SPEAKER_02 (41:37):
Um, I got two.
Uh one older one.
I'm gonna go with uhPoltergeist.
I think that one's overrated.
Yeah.
And then one movie I justrecently watched, everybody
hyped up and said it was likethe scariest movie ever.
This, that, and this.
It was weapons.
I watched that the other weekand I was just like, this is it?
(41:58):
Like, I was like, this is allit's been hyped up, and it'll
say it's great, this, that, andthat.
I just think it's overrated.
SPEAKER_01 (42:04):
I gotcha.
Mine is paranormal activity.
SPEAKER_02 (42:07):
Oh, yeah, it's a
good one.
SPEAKER_01 (42:09):
Like, yeah, the hype
behind that had me like, dude,
this is gonna be like nextlevel, yeah, like scary movie.
Like, I can't wait for it.
And like it was over, and I wasjust like, Oh, yeah.
I see better footage on actualparanormal shows that I watch.
(42:30):
Like, like this is and you madea movie, like, nah, man, come on
now.
You gotta you gotta bring thethunder if you're if you're
gonna make a whole movie out ofit.
So for me, it was paranormal, paranormal activity.
Uh, just not just didn't didn'tdo it, or is my wife's favorite
saying is didn't blow my skirtup, you know what I mean?
Didn't really didn't really getme didn't really get me going uh
(42:52):
like I thought it was going to.
SPEAKER_05 (42:54):
There's so many of
them now, right?
SPEAKER_01 (42:56):
Yeah, like and it's
just like oh, let's just keep
rolling with it.
Like, no, no, the first onesucked.
Let's stop.
Like, let's count our losses.
SPEAKER_02 (43:03):
The first every
movie, there's like a whole
bunch of them, and they're allthe same.
It's the same as that, they'reall the same, just it's
different people.
It's yeah, it's the same movie,yeah.
Every time, yeah, every one.
Now I'm gonna suck there.
I'll watch them still.
Every time my new one comes, Istill watch it.
SPEAKER_06 (43:20):
I know, right?
Hoping that it's gonna be betterthan any of the other ones.
SPEAKER_04 (43:23):
Yeah, I didn't see
that uh that long legs out
there.
I didn't care for that.
I just watched that, yeah.
SPEAKER_06 (43:29):
I agree, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01 (43:32):
Yeah, I mean,
there's a lot that are that are
underwhelming, but yeah, thatthat's my top one.
Uh unpopular opinion wasn't abig fan of Freddie versus Jason.
SPEAKER_02 (43:43):
Um was not a big
fan.
I can see it.
I can see that.
SPEAKER_01 (43:47):
Like I feel like
they I feel like they tried too
hard for that one.
Like they could, it could havebeen a lot better than what it
was.
Um, but yeah, that that one forme um takes the cake with that.
JJ, we're gonna round out theepisode here with this question
here, and you can only pick oneof these two, uh being in a real
(44:12):
opinion.
Do you believe that aliens orghosts are more real?
And you can only pick one.
Man.
Yeah, you know we asked thetough questions on that show,
and I'm saving it for the end.
SPEAKER_02 (44:27):
I'm gonna go with
aliens is more real because we
can't possibly be the only lifeform in this whole entire
universe.
Galaxy, there's gotta besomething else out there.
So I'm gonna go with aliens.
Aliens?
Alright.
Uh Brandon, what about you?
SPEAKER_04 (44:43):
I mean, I whole
hardly uh agree with uh with
what Jay just said there, but Ican tell you from from the the
shit that I've seen, uh, I'mdefinitely saying ghosts.
I haven't seen an alien inperson yet, but I've seen some
shit that definitely uh makesyou makes you question whether
or not ghosts are real and andmakes you a firm believer.
Absolutely, Shannon.
What about you?
SPEAKER_06 (45:04):
So I definitely
think aliens are out there, but
if I have to pick either or I'mgoing for the ghosts.
Just for similar reasons, justhaving my own experiences with
that, I definitely think theghosts are out there or spirits.
That doesn't mean they're bad,but I I think the ghosts are are
out here for sure.
SPEAKER_01 (45:23):
Okay.
Lori, are you kind of on thesame boat with uh Brandon as
being the paranormalinvestigators, or are we going
aliens?
SPEAKER_05 (45:30):
Oh yeah.
Oh no, yeah, absolutely.
I'm sure we are not the onlypeople out here, but yeah, I've
luckily never seen an alien asfar as I know, and hope I'm not,
because that's actually one ofthe things that creep me out.
Uh, but I've definitely we haveseen some stuff that I would
have to say that I woulddefinitely say ghost.
SPEAKER_01 (45:51):
I gotcha.
Yeah, for me it's ghost all day, every day doing the the being in
Moundsville, doing that.
Um, the house I'm currently inuh now, I am about 99.9% sure it
is haunted.
Um, a lot of things happen herethat I just can't explain.
Um seen some seen some stuffhere, heard some stuff here that
(46:14):
it's just it, yeah, it it hasthe the only thing I can go to
are ghosts.
And so yeah, I I I've seen somestuff and yeah, it it's ghost
for me all day.
Aliens, I just I want to believethat that uh they're out there
because there's that there'sbeen so much stuff about it.
(46:36):
Um but I d I have a hard timewith with aliens versus versus
ghosts for me.
Yeah, like I said, yeah, whenwhen I have doors slamming in my
house and I hear people walkingaround when I'm the only one
here, um kinda kinda puts theputs the chip on ghosts for
(46:59):
sure.
Yeah, I might need to get thespicers here for sure to see
what the hell is actually goingon here.
But but yeah, that you know, being in in this house and the
the fixer upper, the the more wewe do to the house, the the more
it it stirs up too.
So yeah, for me it's ghost.
(47:19):
And with that being said, thatis going to do it for this
year's episode of the Halloweenshow on the Ride Home Rants
podcast.
I want to thank all of myguests, Shannon, Lori, Brandon,
and JJ, for joining.
A lot of fun to get to talkabout all things Halloween and
everything that goes along withthe spooky season and everything
like that.
And as always, if you enjoyedthe show, be a friend, tell a
(47:43):
friend.
If you didn't, tell themanyways.
They might like it just becauseyou didn't.
That's gonna do it for me, and Iwill see y'all next week.
