MuddyWater is blurring the line between ransomware and espionage... using Chaos ransomware as a decoy to distract defenders while quietly stealing data and maintaining persistence.

In this episode, we break down how this tactic works, what SOC teams should watch for, and how to detect the hidden activity beneath the noise.

SPEAKER_00 (00:02):
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening,
whenever you may be, and welcometo another episode of The Sock
Brief.
This is your go-to podcast forstaying ahead of the
ever-evolving world ofcybersecurity threats.
I'm your host, Andrew, and todaywe're going to discuss a clever
new tactic from theIranian-linked APT group, Muddy

(00:23):
Water.
They are deploying ChaosRansomware as a deliberate decoy
to match their real goal oflong-term espionage.
We'll discuss why this activityis picking up, how it works,
real-world examples, keyindicators to hunt for, and some
practical steps your SOC cantake to spot and stop these
attacks before your organizationbecomes the next victim.

(00:46):
So Muddy Water, also known asSeedworm or Temp Zagros, is an
Iranian state-sponsored groupactive since at least 2017.
In recent campaigns, they'vebeen deliberately deploying
chaos ransomware, not to startan extortion campaign for ransom
money, but as a distraction.
But ransomware creates immediatechaos and forces organizations

(01:11):
into incident mode, while thegroup quietly pursues espionage
objectives like credentialtheft, data exfiltration, and
persistent access.
So this approach starts withspearfishing, often through
Microsoft Teams or email, togain the initial access.
They'll then drop the ChaosRansomware to divert attention

(01:33):
while installing custombackdoors such as Dendor or Fake
Set for long-term persistence indata theft.
This tactic has been observedtargeting US organizations,
airports, nonprofits, andentities in the Middle East amid
heightened geopoliticaltensions.
For us socks, this creates adifficult situation because the

(01:55):
ransomware noise can easily maskthe quieter espionage activity
that's happening at the sametime.
So there's a blending offinancial crime tactics with
state intelligence gathering, which makes attribution and
response more complex.
And dual times here can stretchwhile our teams focus on visible
ransomware threats.

(02:16):
To defend against these attacks,SOCs are going to need
visibility into both the noisyransomware activity and the
quieter espionage behaviors thatare happening at the same time.
We're going to need solutionslike an EDR XDR to monitor for
anomalous Microsoft Teamsactivity, unusual ransomware
indicators such as Chaos RansomNotes, and any kind of

(02:38):
simultaneous backdoor behaviorslike DNS or HTTP command and
control traffic, credentialdumping, or any kind of unusual
cloud storage uploads.
And SIM platforms are especiallyhelpful here because they can
help correlate events acrossendpoints, network logs, and
email systems to spot patternsthat individual tools might

(03:00):
miss.
Look specifically for the knownIOCs published by Rapid7 and
Symantec.
That'll include things likehashes, domains, and certificate
reuse.
Feed those directly into yourdetection rules for faster
alerting.
On your gateways, make sure toblock or quarantine high-risk
attachments.
Disable external access forMicrosoft Teams, as we've seen

(03:24):
that social engineering attackseveral times this year already.
And that's where a threat actoron an external Teams account is
calling into a company with aspoofed name, such as company
IT, to try and gain remoteaccess into systems.
Enforce strict MFA andconditional access across all
accounts.
And use application allowlisting to limit what can run on

(03:48):
endpoints.
For proactive hunting, searchyour logs for recent Teams-based
phishing attempts, chaosransomware artifacts, or
suspicious backdoor activity.
Make sure you're integratingthreat intelligence feeds for
note IOCs, as severalorganizations already have
published detailed guidancethere.
In the bottom line, MuddyWater's use of Chaos Ransomware

(04:10):
as a decoy shows that attackersare getting smarter about hiding
their real intentions.
Socks that can think outside ofthe box and look beyond the
obvious ransomware noise have amuch better chance of uncovering
the real espionage motivationunderneath.
And here's a closing thought anda call to action.
These decoy tactics are areminder that not all ransomware

(04:32):
is just about money.
Sometimes it's just asmokescreen for something more
sinister.
So this week, review your teamsand email monitoring rules for
fishing red flags, and run onequick hunt for backdoor-like
behavior in your environment.
Make sure you're sharing thosefindings with your team.
The more we communicate andshare information openly, the

(04:52):
stronger we become together.
That collaboration is what turnsindividual efforts into a
unified defense and makes ourorganizations a much harder
target for attackers.
And that's a wrap for thisepisode of the SOC Brief.
