We came in planning to talk about ranch projects. We left knowing more about boa constrictor reproductive anatomy than we ever asked for. In between: a twenty-minute spiral about whether the air purifier should be on Auto or Pet mode (we never resolved it), a scorpion in the yard that sparked a heated debate about footwear policy, an ants-in-pants story from a vehicle recovery that cannot be unheard, and Mark — who claims to be terrified of snakes — turns out to know an alarming amount about how to keep one. This is a normal episode.

In this episode:
• The air purifier Auto vs. Pet mode debate: twenty minutes, zero resolution, still ongoing
• Building the raptor pen and completely melting down over gate placement
• Setting up a climate-controlled dog shed — and watching the dogs refuse to use it
• Spring frogs, nonstop ranch noise, and the sounds that now just live in the background of your life
• A scorpion in the yard and a very serious disagreement about closed-toe shoes vs. boots
• The ants-in-pants vehicle recovery story (you will think about this one later)
• Snake panic, unexpected expertise, and what it actually takes to keep an 8-foot boa named Rosie
• Hemipenes: what they are, why Mark had to explain them, and why we are not sorry

Speaker 1 (00:07):
Hey everybody, welcome back to Set and
Centered.
I'm RJ.
And I'm Mark.
I'm just cute.
Already fucked up.
I don't know.
It was being fun.
Like, hey, uh you know, we'retalking like one episode, like,
you know, they always try to getall these podcasts, the normal
ones, they try to get you out,you know, right out the gate.
Like, hey everybody, be inthere like having a party.

(00:28):
Yeah, so those are my airhorns.
Peep, beep, beep, beep.
No, we're not.
We're never doing that again.
How's it going?
It's going great.
How about you?
Uh good.
Good.
Yeah, it's still hot here.
Yes, it is.
It's it's definitely hot.
You think you guys are gonnasurvive the summer?
No.
We're leaving.
Yeah.

(00:48):
Oh god.
I tell you what, there are daysit can be brutal.
Um, it's you know, it's beenkind of like back and forth, uh
warm and warm and cool andstuff, which is it's been nice.
It's like uh I thought when itgot hot like a month ago, uh,
that was just gonna be it.
But um it whoa, yeah, I lost mytrain of thought.

(01:09):
Cool.
Um there's a picture of an A10on my computer, which you
pointed out earlier.
Yes.
And I'm like, I just wastalking and I'm looking at it,
I'm like, that's a cool plane.
It's a definitely a cool plane.
I know.
That was one of my favorites.
Uh second first favorite isP51D.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Hey the Mustang.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Yep, P51 Mustang.
Mm-hmm.
Yep.
Yeah, those are cool.
Um speaking of air, I guess.
Uh, can I tell you about a newpersonal hell uh uh in my life?
Sure.
What do you got?
This just came up today.
So I don't know if you noticed, but uh I got I got an air

(01:49):
purifier.
Uh, you know, one of those onesthey say it's a whole whole
whole home one.
Um because I'm like, you know,there's there's cats, there's
dogs, there's dirt, whatever.
Yep.
Like I probably my hair couldprobably be cleaner, right?
It probably could be.
I thought, yeah, that'sprobably a good idea.
So I got it, and yeah, it'sreasonably priced and whatever,

(02:09):
well reviewed.
And it came today, and uh, youknow, pulled out, looking at the
manual, like okay, and it's gotlike it's going through all the
different settings and fanspeeds and crap, and then it
gets to a thing, it's like auto.
I said this is an o the thingwill automatically adjust fan
speed and everything based onthe air quality and blah blah

(02:30):
blah.
And I'm like, perfect, great.
I don't have to worry aboutanything, right?
Okay, then I go to the nextpage pet mode, which is another
mode in addition to auto.
This is where my life fellapart because again, auto says

(02:51):
it'll just handle everythingbased on air quality.
And then for pet mode, it saysif you have pets, this is the
one for you.
And I'm like, wait a minute.
But if I do have pets, thatshould be covered under auto.
You would think so.
And so I've I've I've kind ofbeen waffle, I've been in my

(03:16):
head all afternoon.
I'm like, do I use auto?
Or do I use pet?
If I use pet, am I missing outon something on auto?
If I use auto, am I not?
This is this is my brain mark.
It's fucking torture.
I would I would use pet.
You'd use pet?
I would use pet, yes.

(03:36):
Then what's the point of auto?
God, see, I'm not gonna drag itinto my brain.
Okay, so you think I shouldjust use pet lost.
So I should just use pet.
I would use pet.
All right, I'll use pet.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
It is legitimately helpful tojust have somebody be like, bet.
Push this button.
Push pet.
Great.
And if it don't work, go toautumn.

(03:58):
How do I know if it's workingthough?
That's the other thing.
Because I've never had an airpurifier in this house.
I don't know.
Fuck.
Yeah.
We're screwed.
I know.
It's like a similar thing towhere you're just like, you use
pet.
So, you know, the raptor penhere.
Yes.
Um, and you uh yeah, you know, listeners may not, but raptor

(04:20):
pen is a what is it, 10,000square foot, yeah, 100 by 100 um
pen that we built uh here onthe ranch that's about a hundred
feet away from the main house.
Uh basically to uh have a placeto um corral the big dogs uh
when needed.
Uh you know, like if there'swork crews or deliveries coming

(04:44):
or whatever.
Um, because mostly they're justfree range.
They're free range dogs.
Uh so uh my parents and I builtthe whole thing in like three
days.
Um, and so it's like I said,100 foot by 100 foot.
It's 400 foot up fence.
We use five foot cattle paddle, cattle paddle, cattle panels,

(05:05):
horse panels.
I don't know.
Anyway, it's a it's a very nicepen.
Yes, it is.
Oh yeah, I remember I was goingwith that.
So uh of course, Mike, uh he'sconstruction genius and he laid
it all out, blah blah blah.
And I would have never thoughtthat you had to think that much
about how to lay out the postfor something like this.

(05:25):
And after I saw him go throughhis whole thing, I realized I
would have screwed it up so bad.
But anyway, um damn it, Mike.
Yeah, no, it was great though, because he's just like he's
like, do this, do that.
Uh but here's here's where wecome back to my my beautiful
mind.
Um so one of the things is uh agate, so he put a gate on it,

(05:46):
or we had gotten a gate to puton it, and that was kind of as
he was laying out the post, thatwas the last thing.
He's like, So where do you wantthe gate?
And I'm like, Oh god, I don'tknow.
And he's like, Well, he's like, you know, it can pretty much be
wherever you want.
I'm like, that makes it worse.
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Now I gotta think.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Well, not just think, but torture myself.
I'm like, well, if it's overhere, then when I walk this way
to go feed him, then but what ifbut then if I need it over
there?
And this is like the wholeafternoon.
Like and so at one point he'slike, Do you decide where you
want the gates on?
And I said, Oh he's like, Well,I don't know if this helps.

(06:27):
He said, but you can only putit on this corner or that
corner.
I'm like, Oh my god, really?
That helps a lot.
He's like, Okay, so where areyou going?
I'm like, Oh, I don't know.
Because if it put it on thiscorner and going through this
whole thing, um I at my mom, shewas out, she was she was part,
she was witness to my beautifulmind dilemma.
And but she would been insidethe house for a bit, probably

(06:49):
cooking like eight meals and ahundred dozen cookies or
something, yeah, taking a breakfrom lugging bags of quick creed
and eight foot posts.
And she comes out, she's like,So where are we?
Uh I said, Well, I'm trying tofigure out where to put the
gate.
And she's like, Still, like, yeah, because I've put it here.
She's like, put it there.
She points to one corner.
I'm like, Great.
And that was literally it,done.

(07:10):
She's like, What's what was sohard about that?
Oh no, she gets what was sohard about it because she
understands my brain.
Yeah.
But she also understands thatpart of my brain is uh spinning
around about something thatreally doesn't fucking matter
that much.
And she also understands, muchlike you did just now, by

(07:32):
saying, use pet.
Yeah.
Sometimes you just needsomebody to be like, you know
what?
Shh stop.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Use pet.
Well, and the cool thing aboutthe Raptor pen is the dogs look
at it from the outside.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Well, yeah, let's elaborate on that.
So we build this pen, andintentionally, um, it was 16,
yeah, 16-foot uh sections ofpanel that we were putting up.
And so we had posts every eightfoot.
And so we left um one on theside facing the house.

(08:10):
We skipped one post and leftjust a 16-foot run because I was
working on getting um what Icall the dog Hilton now, but
getting a shelter for them, basically, because it gets
really hot here, um, which ismore of the concern.
It can get really cold, hot isreally the concern, and it's

(08:30):
like, you know, it it would begood for them and it would take
a lot off of my anxiety if theyhad a climate control place
where they could be.
So I got this shed, found it,um, I don't know, Facebook
Marketplace, whatever.
Uh and I, you know, I waslooking for something kind of
specific, which was like a doghouse, because I have so many

(08:54):
big dogs, it's like uh doghousebut bigger.
So I figured get a shed and wecan finish it.
I ended up finding a shed.
This guy had insulated, finished the inside, and I don't
know what his plan was, but ithas some kind of weird sort of
maybe bunk bed situation on oneend.
I I don't know.
But anyway, it's was perfectfor the dog.

(09:15):
Perfect.
So bought it, you know, severalthousand dollars.
Uh paid not a small amount ofmoney to have it moved.
Well, you know how much itcosts to have a building moved.
Yeah.
So brought it over, installedit, set it right flush on the
outside of the pen.
And so on the pen side of theshed, then I installed a big dog

(09:39):
door.
Now, here's what we got.
Got this huge, beautiful, lovely, uh large pen.
And uh uh oh, let me let me addone more thing to the dog shed.
And it had uh an airconditioner in it, had
electricity, had lights,everything.
So they have this huge pen thatif they were in it, they could

(10:01):
go in this doghouse anytime.
Not only that, um I it has an Is I set an like a switch, like
a thermostat switch thing,because there's an air
conditioner and there's aheater.
And so if it's like abovewhatever, then it runs the AC.
If it's below whatever, it runsthe heat.
It's more comfortable in theremost of the fucking time than my

(10:22):
house.
Right, right.
They won't go in in.
Nope, they won't.
Because they they very quicklyfigured it, because you know,
dogs are they're deviously smartsometimes, but because we're
building this whole fucking penand they're all out there, I was
like, great, we're doing aproject, we're like now, we're

(10:42):
working, and it was like youcould see in their eyes.
As soon as we put that lastpanel up and it became a
full-fledged fence, they'relike, wait a minute.
So even though and you and I,then you and I, uh last year,

(11:04):
adding to the fun, we installedan automatic waterer in there
too.
Yep.
So there's always fresh water.
So uh this situation, let mejust say, is ten times better
than probably 80% of dogs havein their entire lives.
Huge open space with trees andeverything, very comfortable

(11:25):
house with climate control andblinkies and oh, fresh water all
the time, blah blah blah.
And they act like it's fuckingAuschwitz.
I'm like, come on.
Oh god.
So yeah.
Thanks for thanks for bringingthat up.
Well, I brought up the pen.
You didn't have to bring up thepart where they don't use it.

(11:46):
All I said is they look at itfrom the outside.
I think we all know what yousaid.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah, they're so stupid.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
We've even tried I've I've tried to bribe them.
Christina's tried to bribethem, your mom has.
Yes.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
And it doesn't work.
It it doesn't work.
Um last time she was here, shedidn't she made some headway on
it.
Um, she could actually get, Ithink, everybody to at least
follow her in there, exceptCallie.
Callie will not.
No.
Um, but then only when she hadtreats and uh whatever.

(12:21):
Just like, yeah, you're a bunchof ingredients.
Yeah.
The thing is, is did you followthrough?

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Me?
Yeah.
With uh keep on working on themwith it.
Oh, look at the time.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Uh you know, I I didn't and I've not and in all
this time.
Uh because, you know, I'mterrible at doing things.
That's why my family has tocome out here pretty regularly
and bail me out of all theprojects I haven't gotten done.

(12:55):
And uh well, you know, Ifinally I finally, I think when
you were gone this last time, Ifinally went into the pump house
and just like threw the breakerbecause I ran uh I ran power
from the pump house where I havemy well um out to the
stockhouse and I put a like acutoff switch in there.

(13:17):
I finally went out, I'm like, you know, I've been literally
it's been two and a half years,I think.
Air conditioning and heatingthis freaking thing, and I put
mood lighting in there for thembecause it needs a certain
ambiance.
Right.
24-7, two and a half years.
And I'm like, you know, what?
Who's who's the idiot here?
And I think the reason I left Ididn't ever turn off before is

(13:40):
I'm like, I you know, it's likeconceding or giving up.
But uh, you know what?
And then and then almost like Iwould say almost by magic, but
no, it's by uh duh.
Well, got my next electricbill.
I'm like, oh holy shit.
Yeah.
It was a lot less.

(14:01):
God.
Oh, but someday, Mark, somedaywe're gonna we're gonna make it
work.
Sure.
Yes.
Okay.
Where's the encouragement, bud?

Speaker 2 (14:12):
Uh I'm gonna have to find it.
Well, okay.
Yeah, I I we can we'll work onit, but there is no promises
with this pack of dogs.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
Uh no, but I mean, you were taking a dig at me, but
but what is that?
Do you hear that?
I hear that.
Okay.
Um now it's got like a beat toit.
You hear that?
Yeah, it does.

unknown (14:44):
That's so weird.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
That is weird.
Okay, it stopped.
Nobody moved.
Okay.
Even though you took a dig atme, like, oh, did you follow
through?
Um you make a good pointthough, which is there should be
some follow-through.
Um, and I think if I'm checkingmy notes here, yeah, when you

(15:07):
uh decide to move down here, that was one of the things.
Like, I'll help you out withstuff, but so I guess you put us
both on the hook.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Oh shit, it's back.
I think it's when you move.
Why is it it's Finley's fault?

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Why does it have a beat?

Speaker 2 (15:28):
That's so weird.
It reminds me of video gameswhen I was a kid.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
Yeah, a little bit.
Um that is honestly strange,right?
Because it sounds like it'spicking up some signal of
something playing music.
Do you hear what I'm saying?
Because it was like d- d-d-d-Okay.
I'm over it.
He says, as you realize, thiswill be my whole night.

(15:52):
What the hell's causing thelike with an EM meter or
whatever?
Like, where is it?
Uh beautiful mind, Mark.
Beautiful mind.
So uh yeah, well, what I wasgonna I don't know, what

(16:13):
something's oh, yeah.
Nope, it's gone.
Gone.
I gotta I gotta hold on.
I need to maximize this, I needto put something over this A10.
It's not conducive to doing thesh okay.
Oh, I can't see it.
It's gone.
I'm sad.
Um oh my god, on my otherscreen, I pulled a window over
to cover it.
Oh, it's a picture of an A10with an F22.

(16:36):
Couldn't see that till now.
Well, goddamn it.
Back back to the show, right?
Here we go.
Um Squirrel.

Speaker 4 (16:42):
Squirrel.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
Uh so we before we came in, um, you know, it's
springtime in Texas, and uh hereon the ranch, there's uh a lot
of there's a lot of wildlife anda lot of things.
And one thing that happens inthe spring is the the frogs get
really horny.
Yes.
And it is a cacophony, I thinkwould be the word 20th.

(17:05):
I don't even know what itmeans.
Well, it had cock in it.
Cacophony.
It's a cacophony.
I think that's the right word.
I don't know, but it's justlike I don't know, if you had to
estimate, I would say there'sprobably between two and three
hundred trillion frogs out thereat least.
Oh my god, because well, because there's three here on

(17:27):
the ranch, there's three properponds, and then there's uh a
creek bed that kind of runsthrough a big chunk of the
ranch, which because of recentrain, it's you know, marshy or
whatever.
Yep, and that's where the frogsare.
And oh my god, you're outthere, and it's not like
annoying because it's nature, but it's like it's just so loud,

(17:49):
and we're like talking likeshit, man.
If we did an in the wildepisode right now, oh there's no
way I don't even know if it'dwork between the frogs, the
lighters.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
Yeah, it would never work, right?
Yep, but it's cool though, itis very cool, it is so nice.
All the bugs, the frogs, theeverything.
Fireflies, fireflies,scorpions.
Oh, yeah, that was a fun onetoday when Christina found that
scorpion.
Oh elaborate.

(18:22):
Uh yeah, today I was out.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
Some people call them death spiders.
I don't know, you should tellher.
No.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
Uh no.
I was out there mowing today atat our place, and Christina was
doing some cleanup and stuff, and she just starts walking back
to the fifth wheel.
And next thing I know, shecomes out with overalls, her
boots on and stuff.
And she's I stopped thelawnmower and like, what are you
doing?
She says, I found I found ascorpion.
And I'm like, I don't thinkthere's scorpions out here.

(18:49):
So we looked it up, sure ashell there is, and she goes,
That's it, right there.
And I'm like, Oh shit.
She goes, That's it.
Boots and overalls and glovesand all this.
And she goes, That's that'slike I said, she says, That's
the one, that's the one.
So yeah.
So she found a scorpion todayand she wasn't too happy about
it.
Yeah, I and then you sit thereand talk about oh yeah, when

(19:12):
they get in the house, now shit.
Oh yeah, but she wasn't herewhen I said that.
Yeah, but she won't know that Isaid that.
She is now there's that fuckingnoise again.
Yeah, yeah.
But yeah, she's uh she wasn'ttoo thrilled with scorpions.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
Uh well, I just uh the way you explain like her
wardrobe change.
Yeah, I just like in my head,it's like if if there was a
hazmat suit available, yeah, that's what she would have put
on.
Yeah, she would have.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
I think we're gonna go boot shopping tomorrow or
something, so she gets sometaller boots.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Well, uh let me say this.
When you were telling me thestory earlier, you said
something that uh I'm gonna haveto call her out on.
You said that before she wentin and put on all this uh, you
know, asthmat gear, uh, she waswearing Crocs.
Yeah.
I specifically told her beforeshe came down and when she was

(20:10):
here the first time.
You don't do open toe whenyou're out there.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
These are the solid crocs.
What the hell is a solid It'sit doesn't have the holes
in 'em.
They're like a solid toe topcroc thing.
I don't know.
I I'll have to you'll have tosee them to yeah.
She's but the back's open,right?

Speaker 3 (20:33):
Uh yeah.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
Okay, that's still open.
Okay, I did say oh no, okay.
Yeah.
All right, get me on atechnicality.
So I said no open toe shoes.
Okay, you're right.
Yeah, how about no open footshoes?
Yeah.
I'm gonna I'm gonna amend therule.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
Yeah, well, I I I think she's uh she she will
listen now.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
Yeah, I um and I'm not I'm not scared of scorpions
or anything like that, but um Iand I you know I wear flip-flops
and sandals a lot around thehouse.
Um I won't I won't go anyfurther than basically the deck,
um, even you know, with even mewithout shoes.
Right.
And it's not that I'm worriedabout getting bit or whatever,

(21:15):
but you know, there's alwaysthat chance.
But then it's the we're in thewoods here, man.
So just you know, even walkingthrough and the grass and stuff,
rubbing on your feet and getyou itchies and crap and
whatever.
Yeah, and the ants and andeverything else.
Oh, dude, I got ants in mypants the other night.
Oh shit.
Which is not as bad as uncle's.

(21:38):
Yeah.
As we all know.
Yeah.
But uh, yeah, when I when Ipulled the exped out, I was
telling you that.
Yep.
I and in I this is the firsttime in probably three years
I've gotten hit by ants becauseI am very aware of it.
Um, but I think I was gettinglike frustrated.

(21:59):
And whatever that I get itdone.
And at one point, I got on myhands and knees to shove a big
piece of wood under the tire.
And I was digging, like I wasgetting some dirt out from under
the tire with my hand.
Um, and I saw a few ants, andin my head, I'm like, oh man, I

(22:19):
hope I didn't like kneel down inan ant pile.
And that thought immediatelyevaporated.
It was just a fleeting thought.
It should have been more thanthat.
So I kind of I took a break.
And it was really hot and humidlast time I was doing this.
So took a break and I got Iwent inside in the LR3 in the AC
to just chill for like fiveminutes.

(22:41):
And I started feeling a littleitchy.
And I turned on the dome light.
Oh my god.
Oh shit.
All up and down my my jeans.
And um uh because a lot of myjeans, I I I try to run it, I
run them into the ground.
Um a lot of them have likeholes in the knees and stuff
because I would wear the crapout of them out here.
These ones had big holes inboth knees, and so of course

(23:02):
they were inside.
Oh I'm like, oh god.
So I'm uh I jump out, and I'mlike patting, pouring water on
my legs, patting them down, brushing them off.
I'm like, oh god.
But yeah, so where'd where thehell did you get the water from?
I had a bottle of water in thetruck.
Whoa.
Was it whoa, I always do.

(23:24):
Uh okay.
Okay, what do you got?
What's your problem?

Speaker 2 (23:28):
Well, usually you have either uh sodas or
medellos.
I just figured you use the icefrom the the cooler.

Speaker 1 (23:36):
I am so mad at you right now because that is
actually what happened.
I swear to God.
Oh god.
Now let's back up.
Okay, I was snared in my owntrap of having a friend who
knows me.
All right, let's back up.
So I did have a water bottle, abottle of water in the truck.

(23:56):
Okay.
Just one.
Um, and I'd been, you know, sipping on it when I was taking
my breaks between Jack and thenext bed up and stuff.
And so by by the time I hadants in my pants, uh that water
bottle was mostly empty.
And so I did reach into my beercooler and grab ice cubes, and
I was rubbing them uh it throughthe knee holes on my legs to

(24:21):
try to get the ants off.
It was not glamorous, folks.
You don't even want a picture.
It was really not.
And the worst part is that yes,I had my beer cooler there, but
I don't I don't do stupidthings like drink and like do
vehicle recovery.
Or actually, let me back up, bedrunk and do vehicle recovery.

(24:44):
Maybe a beer or two.
But I do really try to beconscientious about like if I'm
gonna do something, you know, try to get the exped out of this
thing in the middle of thenight.
Uh point being, I I'm like,I'll drink when I'm done.
And I did I hadn't had anythingto drink.
Which of course made it worsebecause I'm brushing all these
ants on my god, if I was drunkright now, this would be no

(25:05):
problem at all.
Right, right.
Like, why am I so awake andaware?
Oh god.
Yeah, thanks for the call out.
Yeah, not a problem.
That's what I'm here for.
I look at my list and call youout on something.
What do we got?
What do we got?
Yeah.
I don't know.
There's a shitload.
Probably.
Can't think of anything though.

(25:25):
Uh yeah, so that that sucked.
But I did get the exbet out.
I'm not sure how we got.
Oh, Scorpion, back to Scorpion.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
So yeah, back to Scorpion.

Speaker 1 (25:34):
So yeah, uh, close foot shoes.
And didn't she get boots?
Because I remember, like, Ithink when you guys came out
here the first time to visit, Ithink we spent a whole afternoon
on whether she should orshouldn't get rubber boots.
She can't find the ones thatshe likes.
I mean what?

(25:56):
Yeah.
Like how specific do these haveto be?

Speaker 2 (25:58):
Oh, specific.

Speaker 1 (26:00):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (26:00):
We are talking female.
Is it like they don't exist oruh she can't find her size?

unknown (26:06):
Uh oh.

Speaker 1 (26:07):
Like Amazon?
They have everything.
Oh whatever.
Yeah.
So, but we did spend quite abit of time on the gives and
takes of rubber boots.
And at one point, which Ithought was funny, uh, I think
the first time you guys ran totown, she's like, oh, this will
be great because I can payattention to see if people wear
rubber boots around here.

(26:28):
Yeah.
And I'm like, this is yourplan.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
Yeah.
Like you live four and a halfmiles on a dirt road and you're
worried about what people aregonna have in town.
Right.

Speaker 1 (26:39):
Yep.
Yeah.
Uh I she doesn't even have likework boots.
No.
That's what I see.
I think the rubber boots andnot to rehash territory, because
we we had the whole fucking uhthink tank on this when you guys
are here before, as we justtalked about, but rubber boots
to me, sweaty, gross.
Yes.
Ugh.
Yep.
I wouldn't be able to handleit, but that's what she wants.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
So yeah, you gotta remember she was a pharmacy
tech, so it was tennis shoes.
So she hasn't had to have workboots or she has she had uh farm
boots or rubber boots, but Iguess it they're old, they were
old and wore out, or they didn'tmake the move or something.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
Um now she's looking for a specific boot, but they
don't have her size, so yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (27:24):
So just tennis shoes, yeah.
Yep.
You know what would have beenbetter than crocs what's that
tennis shoes.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I mean, like, again, closeclose foot.
Now, how big was this scorpion?

Speaker 2 (27:38):
I I don't know.
I'm male, so I lie about whatsize things are.
How big would she say it is?
Not you, the size.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
Probably about an inch, inch and a half, I guess.
Oh, okay.
That's small.
Yeah.
Did she kill it?
Did she run away?
Did you kill it?
What happened?
Uh I don't think she killed it.

Speaker 2 (27:56):
Okay.
I think she jumped away from itand headed up to the house.
Did you hear her scream at anypoint?
Uh I had the lawnmower going.
So probably she did.
Possibility.
We'll say she did it.
It sounds better for thepodcast.

unknown (28:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
Well, she probably did.
She probably did.
Yeah.
Which uh, you know, I I don'tfault her for.
I'm mad enough to tell youthis.
Uh, you know that I hatesnakes.
Right.
Like, I can't even tell you.
There's not, there aren'tenough words to describe how
much I hate snakes.
I just I hate them so much.
But you know, when I first cameout here, I'm like, well, it's

(28:33):
gonna be a thing, right?
You're gonna have to deal withit.
And I used to tell people, I'mlike, you'll know if I ever come
across a snake when I'm out onproperty, um, because you'll
hear 10 gunshots, the sound ofme screaming, the sound of me
throwing the gun at the snake, and the sound of me screaming

(28:56):
again and running away.
Jesus.
Because you know my panic, I'mnever, I'm not actually gonna
hit it.
Right.
Uh, but yeah, um, I think thefirst time my mom was out here
and she knows, and this wasdeliberate.
I want to be very clear aboutthis.
This was deliberate.
So she knows how much Ifreaking hate snakes.
We're walking around on theproperty, and she's like just

(29:16):
looking around, taking it allin.
She's like, Do you thinkthere's snakes that like are up
in the trees that could justfall on you?
And I stopped and looked ather.
I was like, Are you fuckingkidding me?
She's like, Well, don't youthink it's a thing that you need
to be aware of?
I'm like, No, that's a thingthat needs to not exist in my
head.
Yeah.
I'll never go outside again.

(29:36):
Yeah.
Oh man.
I used to own snakes, so Okay.
I was literally just gonna askyou if you if how you feel about
snakes.
I love them.
Well, this is the end of ourfriendship.
Uh write down the date andtime.
Yeah.
I camp.
Okay.
Well, you know what?
This is good.
This is a copacetic, as theysay, maybe.

(29:57):
I don't know.
Or like, so you can handlethem.
Yeah, you're here.
I had an eight-foot red tailboa.
No, I don't care about that.
Well, I would like to hearabout no, actually, I'm really
curious.
Wait a minute.
You had an eight-foot snake?
Yeah.
What did you do with the it wasjust there?

Speaker 2 (30:14):
Yeah, it was just there.

Speaker 1 (30:15):
Uh like in a tank.

Speaker 2 (30:17):
Yeah, yeah.
She was in her, she had a likea display case.
Like an aquarium time.
No, it was like a display case.
Oh, she was dead.
No, that the uh you know youhave it at a store that people
have stuff in?
Sure, like a cage.

Speaker 3 (30:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:32):
Okay.
It was glass and she was inthere.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
Wait, it was a glass enclosure, yeah.
Shaped like a cage.
Yeah.
So when I said aquarium, I wascorrect.
Well, close.
Yeah.
All right.
I'll give it to you.
What's the difference betweenuh the the It would be like a
No, go ahead.
I don't want to get into it.

Speaker 2 (30:50):
Yeah, but yeah, and she was cool.
She ate Mickey Pops, oractually guinea pigs, frozen
guinea pigs.
Uh two questions.

Speaker 1 (30:58):
What was her name?
Rosie.
What the fuck is a guinea pop?
Uh frozen guinea pigs.
God, I guess you did say that.
Yeah.
That's disgusting.
Yeah.
Wait.
I thought that snakes, like youneeded to feed them live things
because they needed to kill it.

Speaker 2 (31:15):
No, if you if they're raised at a young age.
If you raise them right.
Yeah, if you raise them right.
Oh my god.
You defrost them and get themup to room temperature, and then
they'll wait.

Speaker 1 (31:26):
Did you raise the guinea pigs too?
No, uh-uh.
Okay, that would be weird.
Well, you can buy them from petstores.
Yeah.
Uh okay.
So alright.
Uh how long did you have I hadher for about two years.
What was her name?
Rose Rosie.
Rosie.
Had her for two years.
Um, how how did you get her?

Speaker 2 (31:46):
Uh a guy had her advertised on uh Marketplace.
Or it was before Marketplace,so Craigslist.

Speaker 1 (31:55):
Yeah.
Uh I guess I wasn't reallycurious about the logistics of
it.
I guess my question was, whythe fuck did you get her?

Speaker 2 (32:02):
Uh because when I was in the military, I had uh ball
pythons and iguanas.
Oh my god.
And then later on I I hadanother uh I got a red tail boa.
Oh gosh.
Uh a smaller one.
See or Jones and I get anothersnake.
Yeah.
And then my son actually had afour-foot red tail boa.
Oh, of course.
Sure.

(32:22):
And then so since he had one, being the good dad I am, I had
to outdo him.
And this doubled it.
Eight-foot red tail boa cameup, so got her, and then we
moved to a place that I couldn'thave her, so I uh gave her to a
guy that was in a school orsome stuff, and something like
that.
And so he took her and she wasactually in a school.

Speaker 1 (32:43):
Gave her to a guy who's in a school or some shit.
Okay.
Yeah.
All right.
Uh I have so many questions.
Most of them are just diggingdown to the core of your
insanity.
I don't know if we're gonna getthere, but um all right.
Uh how much does an eight-footboa weigh?
I think she weighed like 30pounds, 25, 30 pounds.
That's less than I would think.

Speaker 3 (33:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (33:05):
Um, so she just hung out in her aquarium, her
enclosure.
Can we agree on the wordenclosure?
Yeah, well, enclosure's good.
Okay.
So she's just like hung outthere or did she come out?
Oh, yeah.
Did you walk her?
Like, how does this work?

Speaker 2 (33:18):
Yeah, you'd let her out and let her slither around
or put her around your neck andwalk around with her.

Speaker 1 (33:23):
Oh god.
Yeah.
This is horrifying.
Oh, God.
Okay.
How often would that happen?
Or was she just like out like Idon't know.
All the time.
I mean, whenever I was home.
Watching when you're watchingmovies.
Oh yeah, when you were watchingmovies, you'd oh, this is so
gross.
Yeah.
Um, okay.
And how old was she when yougot her?

(33:45):
I don't know.
How old well, second questiondoesn't really make sense if you
don't have the answer first.
Um how well she was full grown.
Yes.
Do they ever stop growing?
Uh no.
Did you ever watch the movieAnaconda?
Yeah, I watched it.
The original?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Did you watch the new one?
No, I haven't watched the newone yet.

(34:06):
It's not a remake of Anaconda.
You know that, right?
No, I did not know that.
What it is is a it's got uhJack Black and other people.
But um it's a movie about thesebuddies, this group of buddies
who decide to remake Anaconda.

(34:27):
So the premise is a littleAnaconda was a good movie.
Like people who did not like itjust don't know what they're
talking about.
Anyway, back to the point.
Um uh Anaconda.
Uh no, what was my questionbefore that?
I don't know.
That was your question.
Yeah.
Um, yeah, so do they ever stopgrowing?

Speaker 2 (34:51):
No.
That's horrifying.
They'll they'll just keep uhevery time they shed, though,
they grow a little bit more.
Oh god, it's so okay.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
Um I got rid of her because you had to move.
Uh those all my questions.
Uh I think so.
Um, how does Christina feelabout snakes?
Uh, she was fine with it.
God dang it.
All right.
If if you get another snake, yeah.
When you're here, um I I don'tthink I'll even be able to be on

(35:23):
your property.
I probably won't get anotherone.
I understand it's two acres, but if I just knew it was like
inside somewhere.
I'd I'd probably want to I'dprobably want to get another
one.

Speaker 2 (35:33):
Are you over it?

Speaker 1 (35:34):
I I think I am.
Yeah.
Do they do you have to givethem baths?

Speaker 2 (35:40):
Uh sometimes it'll help them shed if if they are
having an issue shedding.
Then you soak them in water.
And and also it'll help them goto the bathroom if if they're
having a problem going to thebathroom, you put them in a warm
bath.
They'll help them go to thebathroom.
Good segue.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
That was my one that was my next question.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
Uh do they have like a litter box?
No, uh-huh.
They'll just poop in thethey'll just poop in their their
enclosure.
Well, not if they were raisedright.
Yeah, not if raised right.

Speaker 1 (36:09):
Okay, so what's on the like what's what medium
would you say is like on thefloor of the enclosure?
Is it shavings?
Is it gravel?

Speaker 2 (36:21):
Yeah, it's it's uh shavings or or you could put uh
some people have sand, whichisn't good for them because then
when they eat it gets in theirtheir system and stuff.
Yeah, shavings get in theirsystem.
I mean sandy, yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (36:36):
I mean you wouldn't want to eat a a sandy guinea
pig.
No, feel horrible.
Um, okay, so wait, so you saidshavings are bad too?

Speaker 2 (36:48):
Yeah, it's shavings can be bad too because they
could you have in there?
I had well, I had shavings.
Okay, but it's like can be bad,but kind of yeah, I would I
would put her in in like a bigtote that had nothing in the
bottom of it and then didn't putthe guinea pig in there.
So that's Oh that yeah, okay.
That makes sense.
And that and that way you'renot feeding them in the

(37:09):
enclosure because when youreached in to get them,
sometimes they would, you know,if you're feeding them in the
same thing you're reaching in uhin to get them in, they would
think that you might be the foodand strike at you.
Just keeps getting better.

Speaker 1 (37:24):
Oh my fucking god.
All right.
Um, let's see.
So you gotta is it a I'm gonnaask a question here.
Is this a the the the feedingtote?
Yeah.
Is this a dedicated tote?
Yes, it's only for that.
Great, that's a good answer.

(37:45):
Oh my god.
So, okay.
One of my other questions wasum, how often do you have to
clean like change it out, theenclosure, like those shavings
or whatever?
Uh or do you just scoop thepoop?
How does that work?

Speaker 2 (38:00):
Yeah, I mean Do they pee?
Yeah, uh well it's it's it'skind of mixed in.
Okay.
Yeah, so it I mean, when theypoop, you just kind of scoop it
up like a a litter box, but I Ijust clean their enclosures like
once a month.

Speaker 1 (38:17):
Okay, that's not bad.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
No.

Speaker 1 (38:19):
Um I mean it let me be clear, it it this whole thing
is bad.
It's this is horrifying, but uhwell, how often did you feed
her?
Uh about once a month.
Okay.
And this is good.
I was this is synergy, becausehere's where I was going with
this.
When you got out the deathtote, the feeding tote, right,

(38:40):
and fetter, is that when youwould clean the thing?
No, I wouldn't because thatwould make sense.
Yeah, it I no.
I I'm gonna give you some tipson raising the snake here, Mark.
Uh okay, so uh geez.
Um do you have to did did doyou take them to the vet?

Speaker 2 (39:00):
No, I never took them to the vet.

Speaker 1 (39:02):
Are you supposed to?

Speaker 2 (39:03):
Uh some people do, yeah.
But as long as they werehealthy and and shed clean, you
you never had an issue with it.
They don't have to get shots oranything.
Uh some people do, I never did.
Okay.
Um they have to get rabiesthings?
No, uh-uh.
Can they get rabies?
I don't think so.
Not not if they're, you know, always in the house.
Was she fixed?

(39:24):
No.
Do you fix snakes?
No, you can't fix a snake asfar as I know.
Wait, you can't?
No.
Why would you fix a snake?

Speaker 1 (39:34):
Well, the same reason that you'd fix dogs and snake.
Oh just don't let them aroundanother snake.
Well, what if they are though?
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (39:44):
I never got that far.

Speaker 1 (39:46):
Do boy snakes have balls?

Speaker 2 (39:48):
No, they have not that I'm aware of.
They have I couldn't evenexplain it.
Hold on, Finley wants down.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
Because like, how is it a boy snake?

Speaker 2 (40:05):
It's not they might have up inside of them, but they
just have uh you have to probethem to see whether they're a
boy or a girl snake.
Did you do that yourself?
No, I never people's words forit.
I I never knew whether it wasuh I knew Rosie was a girl snake
because that's what I was toldwhen I got her.
Okay.
And then the other the ballpythons, I never knew whether

(40:27):
they were boys or girls.
But I was stationed in Florida, and back then in the late 80s,
early 90s, you could actuallybuy them from flea market.

Speaker 1 (40:39):
That's oof.
Uh okay, so is the thing thenthat you just don't keep more
than one snake in an enclosure?

Speaker 3 (40:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (40:48):
So they don't play.

Speaker 2 (40:50):
Right, so so that you don't have, yeah, you don't
have the possibility.
Well okay.
Right.

Speaker 1 (40:56):
But that's that's a different question.
So they don't play.
Uh uh.
No, they don't play.
Okay, they don't play.
Um are they playful?
Like if you got a laserpointer, would it be?
No.
Okay.
Um this is fascinating and sohorrifying at the same time.
Um okay.
I can just see your mind going, what the fuck?

(41:19):
It's spinning out of control,is what's happening.
Um I think I'm out for now.
Okay.
But um I I I asked my guy.
Um, I said, Do boy snakes haveballs?
Okay.
Uh he said, yeah, just not thekind you're picturing.
I don't know if that's a shotat me.

(41:42):
Because he knew it wouldwhatever.
Um he says, male snakes havetestes, but they're internal, so
you won't see eternal externalballs.
Yeah, sure.
It's uh instead of oh god, whydid I ask this question?
I feel like I've this hasturned into an even worse thing
because the answer is uh yes, they have balls, but they're

(42:02):
internal, basically, right?
And then it elaborates, and youknow what?
I didn't ask for thisinformation, but it elaborated
and said, instead of a penis, they have a pair of repro a pair
of reproductive organs called acalled hemipenase or hemipenis.
I'm uh he said, basically twoof them.
Like, yeah, that's uh that'sfucking clarification.

(42:23):
And so, and then he gives me alittle freaking bullet point
list.
He goes, so number one, yes, they have testicles.
Number two, no visible balls, and number three, he says, bonus
weirdness, they've got twopenises.
Oh, Jesus.

Speaker 3 (42:38):
Wow, yeah.

Speaker 1 (42:39):
So we got I got my answer and more.
Just what you wanted, just whatI wanted.
Um oh, water bowls.
Yeah, they have a water bowl, yeah.
They drink out of it, they'lldrink out of it and they'll also
soak in it.
So it's a water bowl it's likea pool.

Speaker 3 (42:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (42:59):
Do they drink like like cats?

Speaker 3 (43:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (43:03):
Okay, that's oh god, because they have the fork
tongue.
They have the fork tongue.
Yeah.
Um do they know their name?
No.
They don't have ears.
What?
No, they don't have ears.

Speaker 2 (43:16):
Snakes don't have none, none, no, no, no, no, no,
no, no.
No, they have sensory, theyhave uh sensory things on on by
their noses.

Speaker 1 (43:23):
They don't have ears.

Speaker 2 (43:25):
No.

unknown (43:25):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (43:26):
No, that's why the guy that I that I got her from
told me that uh she could hearshe heard him whenever he
talked.
She had come out, and it's likethey don't have fucking ears,
you dumbass.

Speaker 1 (43:40):
I uh okay.
I I don't I didn't know theydidn't have ears, but I'm gonna
say this.
Um I I would be I I would beinclined to maybe agree with
that because you know, soundwaves are vibrations in the air.

Speaker 3 (43:57):
Right.

Speaker 1 (43:59):
So I feel like you left that a lot of stuff, okay.

(44:32):
There's an enclosure, which isbasically an aquarium, there's a
shaving, there's a waterfootage, which is really a pool,
there's a heat lamp, um, andthen there's uh uh uh feeding
tote.
Um and then also they're justmaybe flippering around the
house all the time.
Yeah.
And they don't have ears.

Speaker 2 (44:52):
Okay.
And if you lose them, look inthe look behind the
refrigerator, because they'reusually wrapped around the
heater coils of a refrigerator.

Speaker 1 (45:04):
I've never I've never been happier to say the
following.
We're done with the show.

Speaker 2 (45:10):
Already?

Speaker 1 (45:11):
Yes.
I still had a lot more to talkabout.
God damn it.
Done.
Shit.
Okay.
Well, this was awful.
Thank you.
Yeah, not a problem.
Alright, catch y'all later.
Have a good one.

Speaker 2 (45:33):
Hey, it's Mark here at Set and Centered.
Uh, just want to let everybodyknow that if they want to catch
us on the socials, you can catchus at our webpage, setcenter.
Or on Facebook at Set CenterLive.
Uh, we'll maybe post somelittle stupid videos that we've
done, stuff like that as we keepon going.
And also we talk a lot aboutthe animals here on the ranch.

(45:55):
And you can we'll post picturesof them.
We'll see how it goes.
Let us know.
Have a going.

Speaker (46:01):
It always shows we're sitting there, kind of sorta.
Maybe holding it together withzip ties, baby.
Dogs in the dirt giving sideeye shade.
Laughing through the mess thatwe just made.
Yeah, we said it's centered, but the world's off track.

(46:22):
If it broke, it's up.
You can count on that socket'sgone, wind blows, gate won't
latch.
Toolbox open like a raccoon gotsnatched.

(46:43):
Coffee cold, temp, I sweat.
Still talking like we got it.
You bet we take a breath, thenwe jump back in.
Same two clowns, same old grim.
We said it's still a kind ofsort of baby.

(47:03):
Holding it together, we zipties, baby.
Dogs in the dirt, giving sideeyes jade, laughing through the
mess.
We just made Yeah, we're steadycentered, but the world's off
track.
If we broke it up, you can tellthat break time, yell it all

(47:26):
unwind.
Thousand dogs judging with thatthousand-yard mind.
Project list is long, but we'llget there soon.
That's a lie, but it's a goodtone.
We said it's in a kind ofsorta, maybe held together by
starting a little crazy.

(47:48):
You're still listening to oneof the pack.
Now back to the chaos.
Here we go.
