Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. This is send seven World News in seven minutes.
I'm Juliet Martin and today is Thursday, the twenty third
of October twenty twenty five. Starting in Asia, today, China

(00:26):
will celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the so called Retro
Session of Taiwan, which is criticized by Taiwan. Retro session
is used to refer to the transfer of Taiwan from
Japanese to Chinese rule at the end of World War
II in nineteen forty five. Taiwan says that it was

(00:48):
transferred to the Republic of China, not the People's Republic
of China, which exists today. Taiwan's government has banned officials
from attending retros Session events in China. Thailand's deputy finance
minister has resigned after allegations that he was involved in

(01:11):
a scam operation. The opposition alleges that Vorapak Tanyawang was
involved in a criminal network accused of money laundering for
scam operations. Borapak has denied the allegations and resigned his post.
In the United Arab Emirates, Diplomatic advisor Anowar Gargash has

(01:36):
said that both a viable Palestinian state is needed as
well as security for Israel. He was speaking at the
Reuter's Next Golf Summit.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
We were veryant, adamant about any annexation, any threatened annexation.
I think the UE was mobilized immediately with the Mans
with Israelis that any annexation will actually be a redline
for the UE. I mean again, we will not discuss
what entails because I think we've averted that. But I

(02:10):
think at the same time it was also push in
order to reach that, you know, the Trump agreement or
the American agreements. Maximalist views on the Palestinian issue are
no longer valid. We have to address the issue that
we really have two contending nationalisms fighting for one piece

(02:31):
of land, and that land has to be divided.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Russia plans to use reservists to defend civilian infrastructure as
Ukrainian drone attacks increase. According to officials, Russian lawmakers say
there are around two million men in Russia's Preserve Forces.
Vice Admiral Vladimir Simlianski said drone attacks have increased the

(03:01):
threat to national infrastructure such as refineries. Ukraine's Air Force
says that Russia launched four hundred and five drones and
twenty eight missiles targeting energy infrastructure on Tuesday night. Ukrainian
President Vladimir Zelenski has said that United States President Donald

(03:25):
Trump's proposal to freeze the current front lines is a
good compromise, but that he doubts Russian President Vladimir Putin
will agree. In Czechia, electric scooter rentals will be banned
in the capitol Prague from January twenty twenty six. City

(03:48):
councilors agreed that the scooters are causing chaos due to
tourist numbers. Paris and Madrid have also banned e scooter rentals,
and Finland has banned their use by under fifteen year olds. Africa.

(04:09):
In Nigeria, at least thirty five people have been killed
when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded. According to the
Federal Road Safety Cores, dozens of people per year die
in accidents on Nigeria's roads. In Tunisia, tens of thousands

(04:32):
of protesters are demanding a state chemical plant is closed. Shops, supermarkets,
schools and cafes have been closed in a general strike.
In Gabez. The protesters are against the CGT phosphate plant,
which critics say has caused environmental pollution that threatens the

(04:54):
health of thousands of people the Americas. In Peru, President
Jose Heri has announced a thirty day state of emergency
in the capital Lima. The measure aims to tackle rising crime.

(05:15):
In protests last week, one person was killed and more
than one hundred were injured. The announcement allows armed forces
to be deployed with police to maintain public order. Heri said,
we are moving from defense to offense in the fight
against crime. A Cuban man who was deported from the

(05:40):
United States has started a hunger strike in detention in Eswatini.
Five Third country nationals were deported to Eswatini in July
and ten more in October, and they are being held
in a maximum security prison. And in Belgium, journalists Andre

(06:03):
Potchabut and Mjea Amma Globili have been awarded the European
Unions twenty twenty five Sakarov Prize for Freedom of Thought.
Potchabut was arrested in twenty twenty one and sentenced to
eight years in prison in Belarus in twenty twenty three

(06:24):
on charges of inciting ethnic hostility and undermining Belarusian security
Amma Globili was sentenced to two years in prison this
year for slapping a police chief during an anti government
protest in Georgia. European Union Parliament president Roberta Metzola said

(06:47):
both are journalists currently in prison on trumped up charges
simply for doing their work and for speaking out against injustice.
Their courage has made them symbols of the struggle for
freedom and democracy. That's your world news in seven minutes.
