Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good morning. This is send seven World News in seven minutes.
I'm Nile Moore. Today is Tuesday, the twenty second of
July twenty twenty five. Starting today in Asia, Israel has
(00:24):
launched a new ground offensive in Gaza, sending tanks into
the city of Dear Albalah. This is the first time
Israel has sent troops into Dear Albala since the war began.
Israel has not said why it is doing this now,
but according to the BBC, the Israeli military believes there
(00:46):
could be Israeli hostages in the area. The United Nations
and other humanitarian groups have criticized this latest military action
as Dear Albala is an important hub for distribute food, water,
and medicine around the Gaza strip. China has begun building
(01:08):
the world's biggest dam, known as the Maydog Hydropower Station.
The dam will generate three times more energy than the
next largest, the Three Gorges Dam, which is also in China. However,
both India and Bangladesh have said they are concerned as
(01:28):
the new dam would block a river that supplies both
countries with fresh water. In India, the men found guilty
of the two thousand six Mumbai train bombings have been
released from prison. On July eleventh, two thousand, six, seven
bombs detonated on commuter trains across the city of Mumbai.
(01:52):
One hundred and eighty seven people were killed and more
than eight hundred injured. In two thousand five, judges convicted
twelve men of the bombings, sentencing five to death and
the rest to life in prison, but on Monday, the
Bombay High Court overturned their sentences, saying that the prosecution
(02:14):
in the first case had utterly failed to prove that
the men were guilty. In Bangladesh, an Air Force training
aircraft crashed into a school in the capital city Dhaka yesterday.
The F seven BGI jet, which is made in China,
(02:35):
crashed into the Milestone School and College campus shortly after takeoff,
killing the pilot and seventeen others, mostly students. One hundred
and seventy one students were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals. Africa,
(02:56):
in Zimbabwe, the Health Ministry has reported a dramatic rise
in cases of malaria. There have been one hundred and
fifteen reported outbreaks of malaria so far in twenty twenty five,
compared with just one in twenty twenty four. One hundred
and forty five people have already died this year, an
(03:18):
increase of two hundred and eighteen percent. This huge rise
in cases comes six months after the United States shut
its development agency USAID, which left less funding for things
like mosquito NEETs and medicines. The Kenyan police will no
(03:39):
longer charge rights activist Boniface Mwangi with terrorism. Umwangi had
been arrested for being part of anti government protests on
the twenty fifth of June, when nineteen people died during
clashes with police. But when Umwangi was arrested and charged
with terrorism, thirty seven rights organizations condemned the government, calling
(04:04):
the charges unjustified and ridiculous. Yesterday, Umwangi's charges were changed
from facilitation of terrorist acts to illegal possession of ammunition.
He was released on bail the Americas. In Ecuador, the
(04:25):
powerful drug lord known as Fito has been extradited to
the United States. The gang leader, whose full name is
Adolfo Massias Villama, is expected to plead not guilty to
charges relating to drugs and weapons trafficking. His gang, Los Choneiros,
(04:46):
are blamed for leading a wave of drug violence in
Ecuador in recent years. The country was once known as
one of the safest in South America, but now has
one of the region's highest murder rates. In the United States,
a new report says imprisoned migrants are being made to
(05:08):
kneel to eat like dogs. The report was published by
Human Rights Watch, which monitors what happens to people arrested
and imprisoned by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, also
known as ICE. From interviews with inmates, Human Rights Watch
(05:28):
and other advocacy groups have recorded various examples of inmates
being abused at three ICE detention centres in Florida, Europe.
In Italy, Pope Leo the fourteenth has called for a
ceasefire in Gaza. During a public prayer on Sunday, the
(05:52):
Pope condemned what he called the barbarity of the war
in Gaza and Israel's indiscriminate use of force. His message
came after the Gaza Civil Defense Agency said at least
ninety three people had been killed whilst waiting for food.
As well as the Pope's message, this news prompted twenty
(06:15):
five countries, including the United Kingdom, France and Japan to
issue a joint statement condemning Israel. The UK Foreign Secretary
David Lammy followed the joint statement with a speech to
the British Parliament.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
The new Israeli aid system is inhumane, it's dangerous, and
it deprives gardens of human dignity. It contradicts long established
humanitarian principles. It forces desperate civilians, children among them, to
scramble unsafely for the essentials of life. It's a grotesque spectacle,
(06:54):
wrecking a terrible human cost.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
In the United Kingdom, scientists have begun testing a one
point five million year old sample of Antarctic ice. Scientists
believe that the Earth one point five million years ago
was very like how the Earth will be under climate change,
with smaller ice sheets, higher sea levels, and a high
(07:21):
concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. By studying the dust, ash,
and organic debris locked into the ice from that time,
scientists hope to find clues about what life on Earth
will be like as our climate changes. And In France,
(07:45):
Microsoft is working with the government to create a digital
version of Notre Dame Cathedral, the Gothic cathedral, which is
eight hundred and sixty two years old, was nearly destroyed
by a fire twenty nineteen, but after five years of
expert restoration, it was reopened to the public. Now it
(08:09):
will be digitally scanned and preserved online so that anyone
can experience this building in a virtual tour. That's your
world news in seven minutes. If you enjoy this podcast,

(08:33):
with Stephen Devinchenzi. Have a great day.
