glad you've joined me for story time. Whether it's for
a nap, for bedtime, or just for fun, this is
my favorite part of the day and I hope you

(00:49):
love it too. I'm reading our story today and we
are returning to Animal Town for their seasonal harvest Festival.
Are there any traditions in your town that happen every year,
or perhaps just at home with your family, Well, the

(01:13):
annual Harvest Festival is one of those traditions in Animal Town,
and I know our animal friends are all very excited
about it. If you've heard our Animal Town's stories before,
you'll recognize many of the characters. But don't worry. If not,

(01:35):
you'll be able to enjoy this story just the same.
So relax your shoulders, your arms and legs, your jaw,
and every other part of your body. Take a few

(01:59):
sus deady breaths, feeling how relaxing it is as you
let go of the air with each check's haail. And
now it's time to join our little animal friends for
the Animal Town Harvest Festival. On a cozy autumn day,

(02:35):
autumn was coming to Animal Town. The leaves on the
trees were changing color, turning bright red, orange, and yellow.
The afternoon light was golden, and clouds floated cheerfully in
the sky. Meant one thing to the little animal children.

(03:05):
It was time for the Animal Town Harvest Festival. The
animals of the town held this wonderful outdoor celebration every year.
The time for the harvest festival came when the townsfolk

(03:25):
had picked all the vegetables and fruit that grew over
the summer. Picking all that food was called the harvest,
and when the harvest was done, the festival could begin.

(03:49):
All of Animal Town was ready to celebrate. Now, if
you haven't visited before, let me tell you a little
bit about Animal Town. It is a beautiful spot that
you can travel to in your imagination. Everything in Animal

(04:12):
Town is part of nature. The streets are dirt roads
with leafy trees growing along them. There's a river that
runs along one side of the little town, and there
is a big grassy meadow on the other side of town.

(04:38):
All the little animals in animal Town live in nature houses.
Some live in treehouses inside the leafy trees. Others live
in cozy dens dug into the ground below the trees.

(05:00):
To day, in one of those tall tree houses on
a quiet street near the edge of town, the squirrel
children were getting ready for the harvest festival. Baby sister
Squirrel was jumping up and down with excitement while big

(05:23):
sister Squirrel tried to tie baby sister's dress. Meanwhile, middle
brother Squirrel was following mister Squirrel around the tree house,
asking can we go yet? Is it time to go
to the harvest festival? Now? Is it? Mister Squirrel laughed

(05:48):
at his eager son. Almost, he replied, just a few
more minutes now. Next door, in a cozy den beneath
the big branching tree, the six bunny children were just

(06:09):
as eager. Not far away, in the raccoon home, the
baby raccoons were squealing with excitement. All the children in
an animal town could hardly wait for the festival. There

(06:30):
would be a corn maize hay rides, a pumpkin carving contest,
face painting, and bobbing for apples. There would also be
a chili cookoff, a pie contest, and a cake sale.

(06:51):
So many fun things to do and good things to eat.
Come to think of it, the children of Animal Town
weren't the only ones who were excited. The grown ups
were excited for the festival. Two Father Bunny was proudly

(07:15):
taking an apple pie out of the oven, all ready
to enter it into the pie contest. The crust of
the pie was baked to a lovely golden brown with
cute designs cut into the top. Steam was escaping through

(07:38):
the cuts, and it smelled deliciously of sweet apple. In
another den, not so far away, Missus Chipmunk was checking
on a sweet smelling pumpkin pie as she kept one
eye on a pot of chiliing away on the stove.

(08:04):
And in the Raccoon family's home, Grandmother Raccoon was tying
a sunbonnet under her chin, all ready to go out
to the festival. Yes, everyone in Animal Town was excited.

(08:26):
Soon the earthy streets began to fill with eager, chattering animals,
all headed towards the town square. In the center of town.
The town square was a big open field in the

(08:46):
middle of animal Town, covered with neatly trimmed grass. The
harvest festival happened in the town square, and so did
most of the other important events in town, like the
spring picnic. All the animals hurried along towards the big square.

(09:14):
The little bunny children's little bunny noses twitched and quivered
as they breathed in all the harvest smells coming from
the square. They smelled the grass turning yellow under the
autumn sun. They smelled the water of the river along

(09:37):
the side of town, running slowly now that summer was done.
They smelled piles of rye apples ready for bobbing, and
orange pumpkins ready for carving, and pies chilly and cake

(10:00):
as ready for tasting. Well, that made them hurry along
even faster, as you can probably imagine. The little bunnies
and the other animal children sped along just as fast

(10:21):
as their legs and paws could carry them, and so
did their grown ups. Soon the town square came into view.
It was set up with tables and tents all around.

(10:42):
Each one had a different activity for the townsfolk to enjoy.
The squirrel children and the bunny children saw the raccoon
babies and invited them to visit the apple bobbing table
with them. There were tall stools at the table, so

(11:07):
the bigger children helped the little ones up onto the stores.
The table held small wooden buckets filled with water. In
each bucket floated a red apple. The animals took turns

(11:29):
leaning over and trying to pick up a juicy apple
with just their teeth. The little animals thought it was
so funny as they tried to pick up the apples,
only to have them drop back down and splash water

(11:51):
into their faces. The spray of water felt good on
this warm day, and once they finally got their apples,
they were allowed to eat the crisp, juicy and sweet
red fruit. After the apple bobbing, the bunny and squirrel

(12:18):
children took the baby raccoons with them to the pie
tasting tent. Tea chorelle was working there. She served each
of them a plate with tiny pieces of every flavor
of pie, apple, pumpkin, blueberry, cherry, pecan, BlackBerry, and even

(12:47):
sweet potato yam. The animals tasted all the pies, and
then each of them voted for their favorite. After the
pie tasting, they went on to the pumpkin carving. Each

(13:10):
animal got their own pumpkin to calve. Older animals helped
them to scoop out the seeds from the middle of
the pumpkin and then carve a face or a design
into the outside. The sun was shining brightly with its

(13:33):
golden autumn light, and the town square was filled with
happy voices and laughter from the gathered animals. It was
a glorious day as the little animals ran from table
to table and tent to tent, playing all the games

(14:00):
and tasting all of the delicious food, until at last
they were all worn out. The afternoon was ending and
the sun was sinking down behind the trees. It was

(14:22):
time to make their way back to their cozy dens
and tree houses. Once they were in their own homes again,
all the little animals got into warm baths to wash
off the dirt and dust from their busy day at

(14:44):
the festival. They soaked and cleaned, covering themselves with sad
sea soap bubbles, and then washing them off in the
warm water. They watched the dirt swirl away until they

(15:05):
each climbed out of the bath fresh and clean and
oh so sleepy. In their cozy little den, the six
little bunny children climbed into their six little beds and

(15:25):
snuggled down under the covers. In their tall tree house,
the three little squirrel children snuggled into their three cozy
beds and curled up warm and comfy and in their

(15:48):
little home. The raccoon babies also cuddled in as snugly
as could be. With their heads full of all the
day's harvest fun, the animals drifted off to sleep. An

(16:10):
animal town slipped into quiet darkness beneath the sparkling stars

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Rewarded for bravery that goes above and beyond the call of duty, the Medal of Honor is the United States’ top military decoration. The stories we tell are about the heroes who have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism and courage that have saved lives. From Judith Resnik, the second woman in space, to Daniel Daly, one of only 19 people to have received the Medal of Honor twice, these are stories about those who have done the improbable and unexpected, who have sacrificed something in the name of something much bigger than themselves. Every Wednesday on Medal of Honor, uncover what their experiences tell us about the nature of sacrifice, why people put their lives in danger for others, and what happens after you’ve become a hero. Special thanks to series creator Dan McGinn, to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Adam Plumpton. Medal of Honor begins on May 28.
