Howdy!
It's the Southern Senpai Show, wheresmall town Southerners explore big
time Japanese entertainment, anime, manga, and everything in between.
Here's your hosts, Nicholas and DJ.

(00:25):
All Southern Senpais, two Southern guyswho explore Japanese culture together.
I'm Nicholas.
I'm DJ, and today we'renot just two Southern guys.
We also have two other women with us.
I said other women.
They're not Southern.
They're not Southern, exactly.
That's not true.
I'm from South Carolina.
South, I think she's fromthe Southern Carolina.

(00:45):
Not really South, but yeah.
You guys want to introduce yourselves?
Hi, I'm Allison Srebnick.
I'm a production manager overat Titmouse Animation Studios.
That's you.
Hi.
Hi.
I Did you know you had a mic in your hand?
Did you have a microphone?
Yeah, I just, whoa, okay.
Hi, I'm Arielle Freeman.
I'm a production coordinatorat DreamWorks Animation.

(01:07):
I am not from the South.
I'm actually from the Midwest.
Represent.
Hey, somebody asked me This wasthe special guest that we were
telling you guys about last episode.
Yes.
Yes.
They are, they work in animation.
They're probably morequalified to do Oh, okay.
Okay.
This job than us.
XD But today we're gonna bewatching Blue Eyes Samurai.

(01:28):
Nicholas, have you heardanything about this show?
Nope.
How about either of you two?
What have you heard about this show?
Positives?
Negatives?
Have you seen it before?
I have not seen it before, but Ihave heard very good things about it.
Especially considering peopleI'm working with right now did
actually work production on it.
And a lot of the artists that we justhired on the show that I'm on are from it.
Oh!

(01:49):
I'm excited to see ifthey can what they can do.
I hear a lot of weird thingsabout the art and stuff like that.
So let's check it out.
If you're watching along withus, we're going to start the
play in three Two, one and go.
Uhoh.
All right.
Hold on.
If you're watching, you're gonnahave to, you're gonna be mad.
Pause real fast.
We're gonna go back to zero.

(02:09):
I'm gonna go back to zero.
. They're gonna be mad if you don't go.
They're gonna be, they'regonna be mad if it's off.
All right.
I'm doing it.
I'm doing the thing.
I'm going with a thing.
I'm going back to 0, 0, 0, 0 0, 0.
Alright, we're at zero.
Zero.
Alright, you ready?
Alright, now.
1, 2, 3.
Play.
There it is, da dum!
The big N sound.

(02:39):
Do you know anything about this anime?
I know that there's a samurai in here, and apparently they have blue eyes.
I've heard this before.
Shh, no spoilers.
There's
some fire, there's some snow.
There's some gorgeous map paintings.

(03:00):
What is a map painting?
A painting of a map.
Yeah, I'm so foolish, you're right.
Allison can probably explainit better than I can.
Oh man, we're watching this thing.
Do I really have to go into thedetails of how we make animation?
No, we're supposed to talk about the show.
This looks like a very classic intro here.
Like a classic Lone Warrior intro.

(03:21):
Can you tell us anything aboutthe people that worked on this?
Do they prefer their coffeeblack or sugar in it?
Samurai Jack's inspiration?
Basically, from what I've heard fromthem, is the goal was to make an anime.
One of the things that you'llnotice throughout it, is
just perfectly still moments.

(03:42):
Where not a lot is happening, not a lot of animation, the
visuals speak for themselves.
Gotcha.
So it's like Demon Slayer a little bit.
It's like any anime.
Oh, the visuals are really niceand it tells the story as well.

(04:04):
There hasn't been any dialogue yet andyou already got an idea of just the main
character and like what they're like.
I need to have one of these in my room.
Just like a fish thing.
Like this fish entrance thing.
I like that.
You know what's interesting?
Don't they usually draw animecharacters with very round eyes?
Everyone here has moreauthentic eye shapes.

(04:25):
Go ahead and say it, DJ.
The round eyes from anime actuallyis due to the Disney influence
of Bambi and things like that.
And they wanted to actually look likethe Disney characters because that was
the only animation they really knew.
But this one is to focus moreon the actual culture of Japan.
Oh, I didn't know that.

(04:47):
Oh, he doesn't have any hands.
We're gonna know everything about thisanime before we're done, huh, Allison?
You call him Stumpy, bro?
I'll beat your ass with my stump, bro.
Allison!

(05:16):
So this is not registered to me assomething that was rated for children.
It's done by prostitutes.
I didn't know that.

(05:58):
Eat up, girls!
Eat it all!
Oh!
Yeah, I hate that.
I think that's really gross.
Like, when people eat noodleswith their hands, I just can't.
I don't know what it is about that.
Yeah.
Can't go a day without breaking dishes.
Ringo, clean him!
He has no hands!
What's wrong with you?

(06:19):
Oh?
He has the strap.
The strap.
Oh, and then you got thequiet stranger in the back.

(06:39):
Yeah.
How do you know someone'sa low tier villain?
They introduce themselves.
And how do you know that there's a hero?

(07:03):
They interrupt their introduction.
Thanks.
Already
the staging and the boarding is gorgeous.
Like

(07:29):
In this time period Japanesetraded with the Dutch.

(08:08):
Again, with the hands.
They give you utensils.
Man, cut this mothafucka's hand off.
Woohoo.

(08:40):
Damn, cut off Both fingers.
Yeah, our stranger's very skilled here.
Would you still eat here?
You just saw the manget his fingers cut off.
Would you still eat there?
No.
I don't know, it makesyou kinda hungry, oddly.

(09:14):
This art style remindsme of the Arcadia anime.
That should make sense.
Like the Arcane.
Yeah.
Oh, is it Arcane?
Yeah, Arcane.
Netflix during this time was in theprocess of creating shows like Arcane.
This is one of their Arcane was dope.

(09:36):
I really liked that one.
I would.
So you'll notice that On the same dish!
Interesting.
This is not 2D.
This is 3D.
Yeah.
So But the backgrounds are not.
Yeah, they're all They are Solike all of this texturing and
all of this kind of stuff, it'ssupposed to look like a painting.

(09:56):
That's the goal.
That's what a MAPE painting is.
Exactly.
So it's exactly, so all this CG ishappening in front of a painting.
Exactly.
That's a MAPE painting.
So they're taking, it's really highresolution, beautiful painting.
So they're taking CG elements, wrappingthem in a bit matte texture of a actual
Photoshop painting, placing it on there.

(10:19):
And this is what you end up with.
So see all those the curtainanimation of her cloak there?
That is, that's all 3D animation,so that's a simulation.
But the bamboo and stufflike that's the painting.
Exactly.
And see how it's like moving in the back?
That's a trick that 2Danimators actually use.
You'll never catch up on the path!

(10:40):
And Disney's the onewho actually created it.
Where he would have an actual planeof different glass slates of the
trees, the forests, all the stuff.
Foreground element, middle groundelement, background element.
The characters are in themiddle ground, you have the
foreground element blurred out.
This is Disney's making.

(11:01):
You can fake movement based off how youmove that background in those different
sections, those different layers.
For example, if you're in a car andyou're looking out the window, do
you see how the very as far as youcan see, it feels like it's moving
slower than the area closest to you?
We have perspective.
Exactly.
So it's, they're usingthose tricks for real life.

(11:22):
It's brilliant.
It's like Samurai Jackand Arcade together.
Okay, why is everyone so meanto this guy with no hand?
I feel like this is it alsocould be a time period thing.
This is very particularon this time period.
Oh, it is 1633.
I do this little woodenhat he has on here.
Oh, and of course the reluctant masterand the plucky He looks like the

(11:49):
same age as this person, but still.
I don't know why I can The voiceactor for the guy who doesn't
have any hands I recognize him.
What is he in?
Probably a bunch of stuff is in this one.
Probably.
Oh, look, he's tied up.
He's on a tree.
Really nice tree.
His purpose of being here is the comedictiming that we needed to break up

(12:10):
the horrific images that we just saw.
Yep, you need some kind of levityin a story to keep people engaged.
Although, Tackentine's able toget away with it and do okay,
I think it also depends on thetype of execution that you want.
If you want a more classicalstory, then yeah, you're gonna
have the goofy character.
This background here, that was CG.
Did you see how it moveddifferently than the other ones?
That was a comp This is a completelyformed CG background that this character

(12:34):
is probably gonna interact with.
You can see that, I cantell the leaves are some
incense.

(13:05):
Thank you, for I was lostwithout course so long.
Please, let December's lightbrighten a path from this age
as you know to the men I seek.
Please, guide my steps until I find them.
Please, give me the strength to move on.

(13:26):
Or let me die.
Or, her family could have beenkilled due to corruption, and
she's actually from a noble line.
Nah, like in the intro in the lines itsaid like being white was like illegal.
I don't think that she was probablynoble, because she has blue eyes.

(13:48):
Where did it say being white was illegal?
In the beginning, you weren't reading.
It's because you're from Louisiana, and you have 48th ranked education.
We all like no words, we like pictures.
Oh, here we go, we got backstory.
Hey watch, I bet you they're goingto be mad because she's white.
She's wearing goggles to hide her eyes.

(14:10):
Oh, I thought those werelike glasses or something,
wearing a mask to hide her eyes.

(14:40):
Go ahead.
Kids can be so cruel.
They can.
They have no chill.
Their parents teach them this way.
Yep.

(15:05):
Damn, bro.
Damn.
There we go.
We got our answer.
This is

(15:26):
Like a, she's like a girl.
Why are you beating up a girl?
I've never seen, Ihaven't seen that before.
Round eyes.
Like a doll.
Keep in mind also, Japan was cut off fromthe world at this time period, they barely

(15:49):
interacted with anyone from outside.
Yeah, I think, okay, this must bea time to, wasn't it I don't know
if they were, I guess they werebanned, but I forget the reason.
They only did trade with the Dutch, only in one specific part of Japan.
They did not do any other theyhad no other communication
with the outside world.
Completely cut off.

(16:09):
So when you're different,it's pretty noticeable.
Hence the Blue Eye Samurai.
. Wow.
It's pride rock.
It's great staging.
Notice how little dialoguehas already been done in this.
Most of the story isbeing told by the images.

(16:31):
See, it's a great technique.
. It's anime's technique.
Exactly.
Cannot waste anything with your visuals.
It's also good to havethe space to do this.
You know what I'm saying?
Is he blind?
Yeah.
How did you get to this meteorite so fast?

(16:51):
Yeah, but he must have been in the area.
This show's give me like, Dororo vibes.
Has anyone seen that one?
Yes.
So good.
If anyone's not seen it, I recommend.
Especially you both, Ifeel like you'd like it.
Is that the one wherethey got the masks on?
So it's the one about a kid whosefather basically sold him to a demon

(17:12):
when he was a child, and he lost Oh!
And he got all his skin was taken off.
Not just his skin, but hisorgans, his ability to feel, smell
Skin, eyes, bones, everything.
And as he got older, with every demonhe killed, the more senses and feat
and his own features that he got back.
Yeah, I heard about this.
So I haven't seen it, butI have heard about it.
It's phenomenal.
It was based off of the originalshow came out in the 60s.

(17:34):
And then they basically redid it in thisdarker retelling and it was brilliant.
But wasn't something about Astro, wasn't like the artist who made
that also the dude who did AstroBoy or something like that?
I think he was trippin I don't know.
It might have just beenthe style from the 60s.
You're probably justtrippin Yeah, probably.

(17:55):
Why is he caressing it like that?
I don't know.
To be fair, he can't see it.
Because he's probably goingto make it out, make like a
sword or something out of it.
That's why he's dinging on it.
Like Sokka's space sword.
You know what I'm noticing here?
Alright, so when she gets older,I assume this is the same person,
but it probably is, right?
She's dressed in blue, she's dressed in blue now.
The blue eyes, blue this, blue that.

(18:16):
So it's probably going to be hersword because it's a blue meteor.
I would assume so.
And this is probably her mentor.
Wow, you use your deductivereasoning that quick?
Yeah, man, I told you, bro.
I, man, yeah, wow.
You gotta give it to the storytellers.
They're doing a greatjob, keeping you engaged.
Gotta be all that safetyeducation you got up there.

(18:47):
He has these scars on his arm.
Probably cause he was a slave.
He also might be a blacksmith, andblacksmiths tend to work with their hands.
It makes sense.
I don't know any other way they wouldhave done it, to be fair, would you?
That is very CG.

(19:20):
They're terrible at hiding.
You can't just scream when you wake up.
I can't read kanji.
Was that something that wasthat a prayer or something?
I would assume that it wasprobably a prayer that he would
be able to make a good sword.

(19:47):
Actually, it would be reallynice if someone made tea.
I want tea now.
Go ahead, DJ.
Make some tea.
You know what?
I will, actually.
Alright.
I'll see you guys later.
Okay.
Wow, that's big hands.
Or that's a small cup.
It's probably both.

(20:14):
Aww.
There we go.
So you got this old man who's by himself.
And this little girl who's by herself.
And you make a little family.
Yeah.
Would be nice if someone kept proper time.

(20:37):
This is also the same
method in which Alison andAriel learned how to animate.
They were beat on the headif they messed up one time.
No, this is the Miyagi Method.

(20:57):
Here I'm going to haveyou wax on, wax off.
But I do like the way thatthey keep going back and forth
between the past and the present.
Yeah, it's an interesting choice.
Some people they do, some storiesthey just do only linearly, sometimes
you only have one flashback scene.

(21:19):
And so they're mirrored for mirrored forright now and I feel like it's gonna be
a good payoff of telling it that way.
I feel like this isvery Asian storytelling.
Like lots of Asian storytelling fromlike Chinese dramas to Korean dramas.
And all that kind of thing.
And especially if it's an anime, they'll do a back and forth
between the past and the present.
But it's fascinating becauseit's like almost impossible to

(21:41):
do this in like a novel form.
You drive your reader crazy.
Where are we?
What's going on?
Didn't Lord of the Rakes do that a lot?
Or I can't feed my children.
You know the rules.
I don't remember itthat much in the novel.
I read it too long ago.
My mother made me.
No, the movies.
The movies do it, but I don'tremember if the novel did it.
Travel pass.

(22:02):
Oh, I thought she was goingto cut off his fingers.
Man!
I want to see some morefingers get cut off.
Oh yeah.
Because they need a man to travel through.
But That's unfortunate.
They should have had somebribe money like she does.
She already had her save the cat moment.
Why don't you explain that?

(22:22):
Okay basically when a new hero isintroduced in order to, for the
audience to identify with them, yougotta have a moment where they show
that they are willing to root for.
They show that they're a niceguy by saving someone else, in
this case, a man with no hands.
With no hands, exactly.
Coined by the guy who wrote the book,Save the Cat, and he has, I kinda don't

(22:43):
like that book, but that's the story.
Do you know where I canfind the Shindo Dojo?
Shindo?
That's our dojo.
You're gonna blind?
You look like a blind beggar.
How would I be a blindbeggar if I'm looking at you?
If you would please show me how tofind your dojo, I'd be grateful.

(23:05):
Follow the road to the shrine.
Once you go around the gates, you'llsee a sign across the puppet show.
That's clearly a lie.
They obviously don't like you.
And they ran away laughing.

(23:36):
Is that a whorehouse?
Yeah.
It's what the red lights mean.
The real question is, bro, why areyou just out there just watching?
Either you're gonna buy oryou're gonna move on, okay?
This is not a, this isnot a magazine shop.
Back then it was.
Hey, you got me there.

(24:01):
Oh my god.
Man, they just said showa dog and everything.
What a dick.
So as animators, let me ask you a questiondoes that is that like a style choice?
Can't they just, they usually you cananimate in such a way where you don't
see it, welcome to Netflix, wherestandards and practices do not apply.

(24:24):
Ignore the dicks.
Did you walk out in thecold without any pants?

(24:45):
How did you hey, howdid you untie yourself?
I demand an answer to this.
You gotta respect that.
Somehow he got it.
How much for three nights?
I thought you weren't gonna stay.
Oh.
Titties.
They're gonna show dick, Ithink you have to show titties.

(25:06):
I think it's like a rule.
You have to do both.
Gender equality, right?
Exactly.
You can be a little rough.
These you have to

(25:27):
I'm so disturbed right now.
. Yeah.
This is why Americansshouldn't make anime.
Yeah.
This wasn't really in any of the reviews.
a hundred percent unnecessary.
It's it, like you said, it's Netflix.
They're gonna show Dick.
You gotta show, yougotta show the other one.
It's only fair is how canwe get actual viewers.

(25:50):
Let's put porn in it.
Titties!
They haven't lost sight ofwhat the audience truly wants.
We got royalty, guys.
Or, I don't know, someone important.
She has to be royalty or else theywouldn't be carrying her, right?
Or at least wealthy.
She also wouldn't bewearing all of the gold.
Maybe she's a concubine.
Probably.
Yeah, that's true.
The Empress would be in the castle.

(26:13):
Oh, I thought you wereabout to say something else.
What?
What?
What?
We just saw sex and titties?
Come on, that's a logical leap.
Oh, she's a princess.

(26:35):
Yep, she's a princess.
I practiced that speech myselfwhen I told my parents I was not
gonna do a doctoring anymore.
I don't think she's a princess.
The princess wouldalready be at the castle.
I don't know, I'm seeing the gold.
She's maybe she's the daughterof some lord or something.

(26:56):
Yeah, that's probably it.
The emperors had Whichis like a princess, then.
They had many concubines.
And usually they were fromtheir cabinet members.
What is the daughter of a lord called?
A concubine.
No, the daughter!
Not the one Lady.
Conquer the concubines.
She's a lady.
A lady.
He's a lord, she's a lady.
a lady, but what is a lady called?

(27:18):
I don't know what Japanese is.
I only watch Chinese and Korean dramas.
I can only give you the stuff in Korean.
Or Chinese.
We want the stuff in Japanese then.
I'm sorry, I can't help you.
Hime, maybe.
Let's go with that.
That's Princess.
Alright, cool.
We're gonna go with that.
She's a possi We don't know yet, though.

(27:39):
You think she's a dude?
No.
I have a feeling that this entireshow is really based around
the concepts of female power.
You gave him that haircut?
That should be fucking illegal.

(28:01):
That is the hairstyle though.
I refuse.
Doesn't matter.
I will go back in timeand beat this guy's ass.
What's the idea behind that hairstyle?
So she is a princess.
Yeah she's a princess.
I knew it.
It's 'cause she's practicingtalking to her father.
You get respect from someone.
Concubines.

(28:22):
They don't really do that.
Father, I know your wisdom is beyondyour reproach and I submit your
real holy, but I would be Remi.
You know what happens when you feed a pig?
Sweets damn bitch.
A pig.
Of course you don't.
Your life has been roped in silk.
You've never seen the mud of the sky.
Her father wasn't a pig farm.

(28:43):
When a farmer feeds his pig toomany sweets, its teeth rot, its gums
fester, the infection goes to itsbrain and it must be slaughtered
before it reaches full size.
The pig can't be blamed.
He's a pig and will eat all it can.
The fault is with the farmer.
Who knows better?
Am I a pig, father?

(29:05):
You want sugar whenthere are proper options.
More than a few lords have takennotice of you when inquired.
Ah!
News came just this morning.
Lord Saito's wife died inchildbirth and he needs a new bride.
Fuck.
He's an old man!
And a drunk and a whore mother!
Lord Saito earns ahundred thousand cuckoo.

(29:25):
Is that your price for me?
If I don't marry you off, you'll endup in a brothel line with him anyway.
So would you rather behis wife, or his whore?
Father, I know your wisdom isbeyond reproach, and I submit

(29:46):
to your will wholeheartedly.
I spoke from fear, as thesemen live so far away, and I

(30:08):
cannot imagine a lifewithout my father close.
Please.
Please.
Consider someone who lives near, someone you trust to protect me,
and the interests of our clan.
My dove, I forget you are a simple girl.
You know nothing of the world.
Perhaps I need a husband who knows thetoil of life in the battle as you have.

(30:33):
One who has seen the sky.
I do know of a fierce and Bestswordsman in the best school, he said.
Won 24 duels with every opponent dead.
I'm not a noble familyofficial, son of Kahama, but

(30:55):
his prize reminds me of my own.
What was his name again?
Taigen, I believe.
If his skills matter.
Oh yeah, she gets what she wants.
Somebody's already seen him.

(31:21):
Ooh, she knows what she's doing.
Ooh hoo!
So who's the simple girlnow, you dumb idiot?
That's what you wanted from the beginning.
That's the thing.
He thinks she's a simple girl soshe can take advantage of that.
I assume this is the Taigen.
Yeah,

(31:53):
he is Taigen.
Aw, this is so sweet.
This is going to end so badly.
I was just thinking that.
I was like, oh.

(32:13):
Ah, it's trouble true.
Let me just let me just do this goodcorrect me if I'm wrong, so we got
a blue eyed samurai, a princess whowants to marry an undefeated samurai.
With no high class.
Also, I don't think she's a princess.
I think her father is a warlord.
At the time, throughout Japan, there were multiple warlords.

(32:35):
I have a feeling we'reabout to have a war.
And she's looking for a dojo.
The same dojo with the samesymbol as that guy was wearing.
I feel like they're gonna fight.
Yes, I have a feeling that shelost somebody very important.
And that's why she was looking at the gun.
Oh yeah.
And she's now on a path of revenge.

(32:56):
Will Taigen be the one that she kills?
We'll see.
I have to say, if she does killhim, it's going to put a little
damper in that engagement.
It never goes well.
Everyone knows that.
Characters can't behappy in shows like this.
No.
And main characters can'thave both their parents.
It's not allowed.

(33:17):
Never.
It doesn't do well for the show.
I like this design here.
But I do think that this show isa concept of female empowerment.
She's pretending to be aguy to get what she wants.
That woman couldn't get into the areabecause she didn't have a husband.
The women's only way of makingmoney was going to a brothel.

(33:38):
Even the lord's daughter isthreatened to going into a brothel.
All of these people are men.
There is no woman around.
Period.
This is a picture all about Females.
You can't have a female, a badassfemale story and then not do that,
you know what this also reminds me of?

(33:59):
Kill Bill, for some reason.
Yeah, it's Kill Bill mixed with Mulan.
Yeah.
Mixed with Silver Eyed Jack at Arcade.
Style wise.
Together they form Voltron.

(34:24):
Ooh, history.

(34:45):
Tingus!
And Oni!
That has a looks likea bird and has wings!
Oni.
Demon.
How is she a she can see!
I don't understand this insult!
Cause of the glasses.
Ooh.

(35:08):
And obviously these peopleare not around women a lot.
She doesn't even sound like a dude.
Oh, suspicion of disbelief.
Please beat the fuck out of these guys.
They're so fucking annoying.

(35:53):
His secret, every secret is revealed here.
Yeah.
It makes sense.
Oh, if he's a world renownedswordsman, swords like, no, like a
blacksmith, he's gonna, this littlekid is gonna see every swordsman
that comes by looking for a sword.
And of course then she wouldbecome the best swordsman

(36:14):
because she knows all the styles.
. And even how to make the swords.
The sword is the soul of the Samurai.
The sword must match the man.
His blade should be rigid and thin.
Again, I feel like you're gettingmore out of this if I read it.
Have you guys ever seen Dr.
Stone?

(36:35):
Oh.
So in Dr No, Dr.
Stone, it's a basically Magic School Bus,but anime one of the things they go into
is how samurai swords are made they wouldbasically fold the metal and fold it like
eight times, so they can get a specifickind of density, they were, if you get a
actual, if you ever find a real authenticsamurai sword, they're like unbreakable.

(36:57):
They're incredibly dense.
So she's folding in the metal.
But also the concept of that theimpurities can make you stronger.

(37:18):
And she's mixed.
Exactly.
But it's also a concept of,we ourselves are like swords.
We work very hard, fightthrough all of adversity.
And through those adversities andthose impurities, we become steel.

(37:44):
peanut gallery.
A
sharp stick.
Oh, I was wrong.

(38:05):
Okay.
Thanos, he has before cuts the line.
Whoa hey, this skill.
So I bet you he, I bet you hewas a, probably a fighter before.
Before he was blind.
Good enough for cookies becauseI don't know any blacks that they
have scars like that far up is theirarm, they a thousand kitchen knives.
Yep.
There we go.

(38:25):
Miyagi style.
You got a, it's gotta be second nature.
Ooh, a smith signs his name.
I like how all their like, like signaturesand logos, they're all in a circle.
I don't know why.
That's cool.
Whoa.

(38:46):
Hey, we're all just out of kitchen knives.
Oh, it's the meteor.
Maybe a woman can in this case.
Yeah.
Yeah.
She'll probably find theweak spot in The super fire.

(39:10):
Now you need the weak spot in themetal itself, at least in this one.
Will she find it after hedies or before he dies?
Yeah, that is the question.
Oh, look, she's practicing.
Wait a minute, is he just getting asteady streak with these meteorites?
No, it's just the same one.

(39:33):
Then you suck, you can't even hold it.
Yeah you will.
And you're gonna kill everybody.
That's what I'm into.

(39:58):
Revenge.
Protection.
Damn, that's not what she said.

(40:38):
Nicholas Killian was one of them.
I was going around slangingit as much as I could.
And now she's gonna come and kill you.

(40:59):
She's been told this her entire life.
Wow.

(41:26):
Pure, and it may be something shameful.
It may also be strong.

(41:59):
Very rock lee of her right

(42:27):
Whoa.
Can I just cut a blade of grass?

(42:48):
Hey, come on.
Beg boy.
Move it.
It'll be much simpler if youwanted to speak with your master.
No one sees the master.
No one sees the master.
I cannot leave here until Ispeak to the master of this dojo.
Good.
We get to kill the others.

(43:09):
Aw, three on one, that's not fair.
That's also not very monk likeof you, I don't think you're
supposed to want to kill people.
They're not monks, they're samurai.
That's true.
Oof!
Are they?
Oh yes, humbling them.
There you go.
Keep it up.

(43:33):
Oh no.
Ooh!
So
I'm curious, they actually brought inKung Fu and like Taekwondo masters?

(43:56):
To actually have authentic moves anime.
But Kendo.
Yeah.
Oh!
It's a wooden sword, everybody.
It's a wooden sword.
No, it's a little much.
So you don't want herto take out the blade.
It's just a regular wooden sword.

(44:18):
They're not worth her blade.
Broke their ankles.
You know what Hawkeye says Youdon't hunt rabbits with a cannon.
That is true.
Hey, rip his tooth out.
Yeah!
Dude, I am really vibing with this show.

(44:39):
Tarantino would be proud.
The school of hard knocks, bitch.

(45:00):
Oh!
And that happened to me, Icould not show my face again.
They're like, oh, how did she defeat you?
She threw her at the ground?
Better yet, they don'teven know she's a woman.
Eh?
Oh!
Oh my gosh, damn!
They are not hiding anything.

(45:21):
Can you imagine being theboard artist for this?
Oh, goodness.
Oh, it's in his eye!
Oh, my god.
Didn't expect any of this.
It's a little much.
They are full grown menwho tried to kill me.

(45:42):
Put down that toy, and draw your sword.
Who?
That sleeping ass.
The lord's daughter, thisbeautiful daughter, not even ugly.
Oh no, he's an asshole.

(46:03):
Look
at this man's face, bro.
Is that a mole or a front tooth?
Who knows?
Does it matter?

(46:26):
Next time we'll have a dentistexpert on here, apparently.
Damn.
Ooh.
Yeah, I didn't see you wearingthat when you were hanging out
with those prostitutes, but okay.

(46:50):
Oooh.
Oh yeah, you do.
You've climbed some hides.
Tiken is won 24 dues.
How many of you?
All of them?
I've been counting . Oh, a bitch.

(47:14):
Tigan.
Teach him to respect.
I've come to speak with yourmaster and we'll go on my way.
Once I have no one sees themaster, you won't be accepted.
The funeral cart, this is this at Zu.
Who is this voice actor?
No, it's not Zuko.
No, that is definitely not Zuko.
Who is this person?

(47:35):
Oh, a challenge.
Finally.
Is it?
Or is she playing him?
It's possible.
She probably wants to Shehasn't taken out the sword yet.
She probably wants to savor this.

(47:56):
Usually you can tell if they'restruggling is if somebody starts sweating.
So far they look likethey're evenly matched.
Ooh.
Oh.
There we go.
Reveal.
Oh, it's Darren Barnett.
I don't know who that is.
I

(48:27):
can't look at this man's face, bro.
It's
about time.
This is also an emotional battle.
Darren Barnett was also in Samurai Rabbit.

(49:01):
Ooh.
It is also blue.
Hey, there we go.
Someone figured out how to break the rock.
Themselves, it looks like.
No.
Nah, that's Sage.
She did that.
Yeah.

(49:43):
Oh, they're reading eachother's moves before they do it.
That's cool.
Oh.
Yeah, so he changes what he's gonna do.
It's like chess.
Nope, they're seeing that theyboth die, no matter what they do.

(50:13):
This is very interesting.
Ayy.
He didn't fall for it.
Ooh.
Oh,

(51:18):
she gonna hit him with the rock lead.
Oh, wow.
Ooh.

(51:40):
Ooh.
Should've killed herwhen you had the chance.
That hilt is very nice too.
This blade is gorgeous.
Has little waves at the bottom of it.
I wonder how many iterationsthey went through to get it.

(52:02):
Oh boy.
You're the master.
You heard all this bullshit going onoutside and you didn't do anything?
Where may I find your brother, theblack market merchant, Heiji Shindo?

(52:27):
You did all this, to find my brother?
Why?
Heiji Shindo is in the fortress on TanabeIsland, protected by the Gengen Clan.
Whatever business you have withhim, you will never reach him.

(52:53):
See, wasn't that so hard?
I didn't have to beat upall these people for this.
Still.
Dog.
May I kill this son of a bitch?
Thank you.
Oh, wow.
Okay, so that's the limitation?
Beheading?

(53:14):
How many teeth did we see pulled out?
I don't think she beheaded him.
Or they also would have shownit if she did it, right?
Because they showed everything else?
She's probably going to cutoff his hands or something.
I think she blinded him.
I'm going to say she didsomething to dishonor him.
Like to show shame or something.
Or she cut his hair.
Oh yeah, she probably cut his top knot.
She probably did?
Oh no.
Almost.
No, they're like freezing to death.

(53:34):
Oh, the gold comb!
She cut his topknot!
Yep.
Super disrespect.
So that way they can pay their way in.
Yeah, if you cut someone's topknot,it's like you basically, they're,
it's complete defeat to you.
They are under complete defeat to you.
Even in modern times, mostbalding men feel shame.
You guys don't have anything toworry about for a number of years.
Yeah, I have pretty long dreads.

(53:56):
So this is gonna affect her.
She does feel pain.
Maybe she should have a companion.
Poe sounds like a pretty good companion.
She said Poe.
Is that the guy's name, Poe?
No, I just, he reminds me of Poe.
I'm sure he had a name.
Unfortunately, we talked and missed it.
Oh.

(54:16):
If people didn't want tohear people talking, they
wouldn't be listening to this.
True.
Ugh, the black teeth.
Oh, they used to do that back then.
Yeah, that was a sign of beauty.
Why?
I do not understand.
It's another culture.
It's just the way they do OHHH!
You're right!
Oh, bro!

(54:37):
You ball, bro!
Every man who reaches 40 hasgone through this transition.
Oh no.
Are they gonna turn their back onhim because it was a complete defeat?
Oh yeah, and he's full of shame.
Yep.

(55:04):
That's what she said.
Huh.
Sounds familiar.

(55:30):
That's a very villain looking position.
It's the white guy.
Done with it.
The white man!
Ah!
Ah!
Ah!
Number four!
Ah!
The white man!
Ah!
Ah!
I'm getting Lord of the Rings vibes.
That's some Mulan stuff right there.

(55:52):
Unfortunately, there's no Mushu.
That's the thing, she's by herself,so she needs some kind of companion.
She cannot do this alone.
It's true.
I wonder who!
Yes!
I wonder who's gonna show up!
I wonder who!
Facts.

(56:15):
Aww.
She got herself a great surrogate father.
He's so sad.
Aww.

(56:40):
I don't know, ways it'sa pretty it right now.
Yeah, but this is like in1633 and exclusively in Japan.
They, they're banned andevil and men beat her up.
Three fifths of a person.
Oh, jeez, oh god, I can't.
At least she learned how to sew.

(57:02):
It's just very useful to her.
Oh, come on.
Oh, it's a joke, Allthanks to white dudes.
Is there a scary villainin this or what, man?
That's funny.
Does he not know that she's he can't see,and it's not like he's been touching her.

(57:27):
Yes, but he can hear her.

(58:02):
Hit it on the ground.
Yep.
Make sure it works.
Oh, no, he knows exactlywhat it's made from.
Because the sound, yeah.
He's yeah, I even surpassyour blacksmithing skills.
The question is she gonna fight naked?

(58:24):
I, what I've seen so far,I wouldn't put it past him.
Oh.
Oh my.
Full frontal.
Full frontal.
Bush it all.
Peaches.
Oh, this guy.
Oh god.
Really?
Next episode of Blue Eyed Samurai.
Next time on Dragon Balls!

(58:44):
We're gonna see some heading!
Ah, there's a white guy!
Ah!
Ah!
Oh, the devil!
I do relate to this.
I relate to this concept a lot.
I do not!
I do not!
I'll never ever tellanyone that you're a girl!
If I see you again I'll kill you.

(59:07):
I'm so clean.
It's not so bad.
We'll be married.
Your father will never allow enough.
It wasn't even a dual.
Therefore, you never lost.
He must have left a trail.
Oh.
Oh, I love it.
It cost me my station.
And my honor,
I've been to a stranger.

(59:31):
I just have to find Tigan.
I have a feeling Ty's gonna fallin love with the Blue Eye Samurai.
Yeah, probably.
You can be great.
I've actually seen whatweakness looks like.
You don't want revenge?
Revenge does not hesitate.
There's something I need to tell you.

(59:52):
Oh, look at the sexual tension.
Two warriors.
Yeah!
Cause he's Scottish!
What?
Hey!

(01:00:14):
Oh shit!
Oh yeah!
Oh man!
Only satisfying.

(01:00:35):
How's that ghost inshell feel, doesn't it?
That was hardcore.
That was the first episode.
Well done.
Directed by Jane Wu.
Jane.
Excellent job.
Fantastic job.
Good job.
We got an excellent character to follow.
Man.
Brilliant.
Alright.
Here we go.
We're gonna go around.
Okay.
What is your first thoughts?

(01:00:56):
That's some dark shit.
Yeah.
I really liked a lot of the art.
Yay, go Nick!
And the Yay!
I appreciate that.
I appreciate that.
They're shouting out peoplethey know in the credits.
We don't know a number of them.
But yeah.
Yay, co production!
We love you!

(01:01:17):
Yeah, I don't know Wethought you wouldn't be made.
She knows you guys.
I don't know.
Yeah, she does.
She knows them.
I actually don't, but I thinkthey did an excellent job.
Quebec!
Looks great.
It's beautiful.
They take this 3D animation and they're,like, doing A great job with medium.
It's really come a long way.
Do you guys ever watchthe 3d berserk anime?
Not the 3d it's in the 2d one.

(01:01:38):
Yeah, don't watch the 3d one.
It's right It just looksso beautiful in this one.
They really took like the paintingthe artistry and Put it all together
and made something pretty fantasticand we got a great arc to look
forward to with our main character.
I think CG, 3D anime and CGI has comea long way in this form of media.

(01:02:01):
I remember seeing it when I was younger.
You could tell the difference.
You're like, Oh God, it's 3D.
Oh yeah.
It's blinding.
It's horrible.
It's bad to look at.
But nowadays I think people arestarting to get the hang of it.
It's either the tell of I don't thinkthat it was the technology's fault.
I think it's that people, theyjust don't know how to use it
yet at that point earlier on.
Because the technologyhas always been there.

(01:02:22):
It's just like, how you use it to expressyourself, I think has really changed.
Yeah, I don't know.
Nick, what do you think?
I thought the 3D waspretty cool in Spy Kids.
Oh my goodness.
One thing that's interestingI don't even know.
I have to say, I'm veryimpressed with Netflix.
Every single time I think that Oh,all this company is good for is buying

(01:02:45):
other people's properties, then theycome out with something like this.
And it shows that there is creativity.
There is something still therethat is thriving and is alive.
And I think other studiosneed to pay attention.
To the fact that we don't needto just do American storytelling.
There's a ton of differentstorytellings all around the world

(01:03:08):
from Indian to Japanese, to eventhe way that the Europeans do it.
Disney has invested a lotmore money into anime.
Not because they care, because it makes money.
Let's be honest.
And it makes money for a reason.
This is like a unique, fascinating story.
And you got this perspective, like a woman's perspective at this
particular time is not exactly as told.
It's so good.

(01:03:29):
Mulan was incredible growing up.
So you to be able to have a moreserious version of that is exciting.
Yes.
Guys, we hope you enjoyed this.
Watch along.
I'm dj.
I'm Nicholas.
I'm Ariel.
And I'm Allison.
And we'll see you next time.
See ya.

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Rewarded for bravery that goes above and beyond the call of duty, the Medal of Honor is the United States’ top military decoration. The stories we tell are about the heroes who have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism and courage that have saved lives. From Judith Resnik, the second woman in space, to Daniel Daly, one of only 19 people to have received the Medal of Honor twice, these are stories about those who have done the improbable and unexpected, who have sacrificed something in the name of something much bigger than themselves. Every Wednesday on Medal of Honor, uncover what their experiences tell us about the nature of sacrifice, why people put their lives in danger for others, and what happens after you’ve become a hero. Special thanks to series creator Dan McGinn, to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Adam Plumpton. Medal of Honor begins on May 28.
