1st Lt. Carol I. Cahoon grew up in a ranching family on the range land of Idaho. He was a member of the Idaho National Guard and later joined the US Army in California. 1st LT Cahoon was assigned to the 26th Cavalry Regiment, one of the Officers in charge of the Scout Car Platoon. The Scout Car Platoon was responsible for the transportation of men and supplies using light armored cars and trucks. Unfortunately 1st LT Cahoon was Killed in Action on 7 January 1942 near Layac Junction on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. Layac Junction was one of the first lines of defense against Japanese ground forces on Bataan and provided a delaying action for General Douglas MacArthur to reorganize a better defense.
Early on 7 January 1942, the remaining Scout Car Platoon departed from Layac Junction and was ambushed soon after at the nearby village of Culis. The unit returned fire, but the Japanese detonated a mortar shell against the convoy, 1LT Cahoon and one other American Officer were Killed in Action and later listed as Missing in Action. Their remains were not located following the incident and both are still currently unaccounted for. After the war American remains were recovered in this area but not identified and buried as Unknowns at the Manila American Cemetery.
Today, 1LT Cahoon’s name is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines with his case listed as Active Pursuit by the DPAA. Currently, his family and nephew, Cal Cahoon Boardman are working to get his remains disinterred and identified. Mr. Boardman has written a book about his "Quest" to find his uncle.
